AUSA Podcasts

AUSA is releasing five new podcast episodes in September. The first podcast in the “Army Matters” series features a discussion with retired Sgt. Maj. of the Army Kenneth Preston and retired Command Sgt. Maj. Troy Welch about standards and discipline and how they keep soldiers alive and focused on the mission. The podcast will be available Sept. 2.

The Sept. 9 podcast will feature soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team. The Fort Hood, Texas-based soldiers will discuss their upcoming deployment to Poland in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve and AUSA’s partnership with the brigade with the goal of providing a supporting relationship before, during and after the deployment.

In the next episode, a retired Army officer shares his personal story of dealing with alcohol while in the military, including how to help a loved one dealing with addiction and how soldiers can find help through Alcoholics Anonymous. The episode will be available Sept. 16.

Next up is an episode, available Sept. 23, featuring MG J.P. McGee, director of the Army Talent Management Task Force. The discussion will focus on the changes the Army is making to its industrial-age personnel system to best leverage the knowledge, skills, behaviors and preferences of its officers and noncommissioned officers.

September also will include a special edition episode featuring LTG. Eric Wesley, director of the Futures and Concepts Center and deputy commanding general of U.S. Army Futures Command. During the episode, Wesley describes how the Army is undergoing its most fundamental change in 40 years in response to the re-emergence of long-term strategic competition with Russia and China, and how the U.S. military and its allies will overcome the problem of layered standoff and anti-access area denial capabilities. The episode will be available Sept. 30.

Army ROTC Cadet Sets Guinness World Record

An Army cadet from Michigan State University recently set a Guinness World Record for the most chest-to-ground burpees completed in 12 hours, an effort that helped him raise more than $7,800 for his nonprofit group for wounded veterans.

4,689. That's the number of burpees Bryan Abell, a 23-year-old ROTC cadet, accomplished July 7 in his hometown of Milford, Michigan. His original goal was 4,500, the minimum number required by Guinness to set the record, but Abell kept going when there was time to spare.

The exercise was named in the 1930s for American physiologist Royal H. Burpee, who developed the burpee test. He earned a Ph.D. in applied physiology from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1940 and created the "burpee" exercise as part of his Ph.D. thesis as a quick and simple way to assess fitness.[2] The exercise was popularized when the United States Armed Services adopted it as a way to assess the fitness level of recruits when the US entered World War II. Consisting of a series of the exercises performed in rapid succession, the test was meant to be a quick measure of agility, coordination, and strength.[3]

The burpee, or squat thrust, is a full body exercise used in strength training and as an aerobic exercise. The basic movement is performed in four steps and known as a "four-count burpee":1. Begin in a standing position.2. Move into a squat position with your hands on the ground. (count 1)3. Kick your feet back into a plank position, while keeping your arms extended. (count 2)4. Immediately return your feet into squat position. (count 3)5. Stand up from the squat position (count 4)
