• Josephus’ Antiquities of the Jews 18.5– Herod was married to the daughter of Aretas (king of Arabia).

– While visiting Philip in Rome, he fell in love with Herodias. She agreed to put away Philip & he agreed to put away his wife. – This led to war with Arabia.

• “It is not lawful for you to have her”– Philip was still alive (cf. Dt. 25:5-10).– Herodias “put away” Philip. Under Mosaic Law only the man could “put away” his wife (Deut 24:1-4). – Josephus says this “confounded” the laws of their country (Antiquities of the Jews, 18.5).
