John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1This is the beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah the Sonof God 2 Long ago Isaiah the prophet wrote

ldquoI will send my messenger ahead of you He will prepare your wayrdquo (Malachi 31)

3 ldquoA messenger is calling out in the desert lsquoPrepare the way for the Lord Make straight paths for himrsquo rdquo (Isaiah 403)

4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the desert He preached that people

should be baptized and turn away from their sins Then God would forgivethem 5 All the people from the countryside of Judea went out to him Allthe people from Jerusalem went too When they admitted they had sinnedJohn baptized them in the Jordan River 6 John wore clothes made out ofcamelrsquos hair He had a leather belt around his waist And he ate locusts and wild honey 7 Here is what John was preaching ldquoAfter me there is some-one coming who is more powerful than I am Irsquom not good enough to benddown and untie his sandals 8 I baptize you with water But he will baptize you with the Holy Spiritrdquo

Jesus Is Baptized and Tempted 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee John baptized Jesus in

the Jordan River 10 Jesus was coming up out of the water Just then he sawheaven being torn open Jesus saw the Holy Spirit coming down on him likea dove 11 A voice spoke to him from heaven It said ldquoYou are my Son and Ilove you I am very pleased with yourdquo

12 At once the Holy Spirit sent Jesus out into the desert 13 He was in the

desert 40 days There Satan tempted him The wild animals didnrsquot harmJesus Angels took care of him

Jesus Preaches the Good News14 After John was put in prison Jesus went into Galilee He preached the

good news of God 15 ldquoThe time has comerdquo he said ldquoThe kingdom of Godhas come near Turn away from your sins and believe the good newsrdquo

Jesus Chooses His First Disciples16

One day Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee There he saw Si-mon and his brother Andrew They were throwing a net into the lake They were fishermen 17 ldquoCome and follow merdquo Jesus said ldquoI will send you out tofish for peoplerdquo 18 At once they left their nets and followed him

19 Then Jesus walked a little farther As he did he saw James the son ofZebedee and his brother John They were in a boat preparing their nets

20 Right away he called out to them They left their father Zebedee in theboat with the hired men Then they followed Jesus

Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit

21 Jesus and those with him went to Capernaum When the Sabbath daycame he went into the synagogue There he began to teach 22 The people were amazed at his teaching Thatrsquos because he taught them like one whohad authority He did not talk like the teachers of the law 23 Just then a manin their synagogue cried out He was controlled by an evil spirit He said24 ldquoWhat do you want with us Jesus of Nazareth Have you come to destroyus I know who you are You are the Holy One of Godrdquo

25 ldquoBe quietrdquo said Jesus firmly ldquoCome out of himrdquo 26 The evil spirit shook

the man wildly Then it came out of him with a scream27 All the people were amazed So they asked each other ldquoWhat is this A new teaching And with so much authority He even gives orders to evilspirits and they obey himrdquo 28 News about Jesus spread quickly all over Gal-ilee

Jesus Heals Many People 29 Jesus and those with him left the synagogue Right away they went with

James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew 30 Simonrsquos mother-in-

law was lying in bed with a fever They told Jesus about her right away 31 Sohe went to her He took her hand and helped her up The fever left her Thenshe began to serve them

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all who weresick They also brought all who were controlled by demons 33 All the peoplein town gathered at the door 34 Jesus healed many of them They had allkinds of sicknesses He also drove out many demons But he would not letthe demons speak because they knew who he was

Jesus Prays in a Quiet Place 35 It was very early in the morning and still dark Jesus got up and left the

house He went to a place where he could be alone There he prayed 36 Si-mon and his friends went to look for Jesus 37 When they found him theycalled out ldquoEveryone is looking for yourdquo

38 Jesus replied ldquoLetrsquos go somewhere else I want to go to the nearbytowns I must preach there also That is why I have comerdquo 39 So he traveledall around Galilee He preached in their synagogues He also drove out de-

mons

Jesus Heals a Man Who Had a Skin Disease 40 A man who had a skin disease came to Jesus On his knees he begged

Jesus He said ldquoIf you are willing to make me lsquocleanrsquo you can do itrdquo41 Jesus became angry He reached out his hand and touched the man ldquoI

am willing to do itrdquo Jesus said ldquoBe lsquocleanrsquordquo 42 Right away the disease left theman and he was ldquocleanrdquo

43 Jesus sent him away at once He gave the man a strong warning 44 ldquoDonrsquottell this to anyonerdquo he said ldquoGo and show yourself to the priest Offer thesacrifices that Moses commanded It will be a witness to the priest and thepeople that you are lsquocleanrsquo rdquo 45 But the man went out and started talkingright away He spread the news to everyone So Jesus could no longer entera town openly He stayed outside in lonely places But people still came tohim from everywhere

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Man Who Could Not Walk

2 A few days later Jesus entered Capernaum again The people heard that

he had come home2

So many people gathered that there was no roomleft There was not even room outside the door And Jesus preached the word to them 3 Four of those who came were carrying a man who could not walk 4 But they could not get him close to Jesus because of the crowd Sothey made a hole by digging through the roof above Jesus Then they low-ered the man through it on a mat 5 Jesus saw their faith So he said to theman ldquoSon your sins are forgivenrdquo

6 Some teachers of the law were sitting there They were thinking 7 ldquoWhyis this fellow talking like that Hersquos saying a very evil thing Only God can

forgive sinsrdquo8 Right away Jesus knew what they were thinking So he said to them

ldquoWhy are you thinking these things 9 Is it easier to say to this man lsquoYoursins are forgivenrsquo Or to say lsquoGet up take your mat and walkrsquo 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sinsrdquo SoJesus spoke to the man who could not walk 11 ldquoI tell yourdquo he said ldquoget upTake your mat and go homerdquo 12 The man got up and took his mat Then he walked away while everyone watched All the people were amazed They

praised God and said ldquoWe have never seen anything like thisrdquo Jesus Chooses Levi and Eats With Sinners

13 Once again Jesus went out beside the Sea of Galilee A large crowd cameto him He began to teach them 14 As he walked along he saw Levi the sonof Alphaeus Levi was sitting at the tax collectorrsquos booth ldquoFollow merdquo Jesustold him Levi got up and followed him

15 Later Jesus was having dinner at Levirsquos house Many tax collectors andsinners were eating with him and his disciples They were part of the large

crowd following Jesus16

Some teachers of the law who were Pharisees werethere They saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors So they askedhis disciples ldquoWhy does he eat with tax collectors and sinnersrdquo

17 Jesus heard that So he said to them ldquoThose who are healthy donrsquot needa doctor Sick people do I have not come to get those who think they areright with God to follow me I have come to get sinners to follow merdquo

Jesus Is Asked About Fasting 18 Johnrsquos disciples and the Pharisees were going without eating Some

people came to Jesus They said to him ldquoJohnrsquos disciples are fasting Thedisciples of the Pharisees are also fasting But your disciples are not Whyarenrsquot theyrdquo

19 Jesus answered ldquoHow can the guests of the groom go without eating while he is with them They will not fast as long as he is with them 20 But thetime will come when the groom will be taken away from them On that daythey will go without eating

21 ldquoNo one sews a patch of new cloth on old clothes Otherwise the newpiece will pull away from the old That will make the tear worse 22 No onepours new wine into old wineskins Otherwise the wine will burst the skins

Then the wine and the wineskins will both be destroyed No people pournew wine into new wineskinsrdquo

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath Day 23 One Sabbath day Jesus was walking with his disciples through the grain-

fields The disciples began to break off some heads of grain 24 The Phariseessaid to Jesus ldquoLook It is against the Law to do this on the Sabbath day Whyare your disciples doing itrdquo

25 He answered ldquoHavenrsquot you ever read about what David did He and

his men were hungry They needed food26

It was when Abiathar was highpriest David entered the house of God and ate the holy bread Only priests were allowed to eat it David also gave some to his menrdquo

27 Then Jesus said to them ldquoThe Sabbath day was made for man Man was not made for the Sabbath day 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of theSabbath dayrdquo

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath Day

3 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue A man with a weak and

twisted hand was there 2 Some Pharisees were trying to find fault withJesus They watched him closely They wanted to see if he would heal theman on the Sabbath day 3 Jesus spoke to the man with the weak and twistedhand ldquoStand up in front of everyonerdquo he said

4 Then Jesus asked them ldquoWhat does the Law say we should do on theSabbath day Should we do good Or should we do evil Should we savelife Or should we killrdquo But no one answered

5 Jesus looked around at them in anger He was very upset because theirhearts were stubborn Then he said to the man ldquoStretch out your handrdquo He

stretched it out and his hand had become as good as new 6 Then the Phar-isees went out and began to make plans with the Herodians They wantedto kill Jesus

Crowds Follow Jesus7 Jesus went off to the Sea of Galilee with his disciples A large crowd from

Galilee followed 8 People heard about all that Jesus was doing And manycame to him They came from Judea Jerusalem and Idumea They camefrom the lands east of the Jordan River And they came from the area aroundTyre and Sidon 9 Because of the crowd Jesus told his disciples to get a small

boat ready for him This would keep the people from crowding him 10 Jesushad healed many people So those who were sick were pushing forward totouch him 11 When people controlled by evil spirits saw him they fell downin front of him The spirits shouted ldquoYou are the Son of Godrdquo 12 But Jesusordered them not to tell people about him

Jesus Appoints the Twelve Disciples13 Jesus went up on a mountainside He called for certain people to come

to him and they came 14 He appointed 12 of them so that they would be with him He would also send them out to preach 15 And he gave them au-thority to drive out demons 16 So Jesus appointed the 12 disciples Simon was one of them Jesus gave him the name Peter 17 There were James sonof Zebedee and his brother John Jesus gave them the name BoanergesBoanerges means Sons of Thunder 18 There were also Andrew Philip Bar-tholomew Matthew Thomas and James son of Alphaeus And there wereThaddaeus and Simon the Zealot 19 Judas Iscariot was one of them too He was the one who was later going to hand Jesus over to his enemies

Jesus Is Accused by Teachers of the Law 20 Jesus entered a house Again a crowd gathered It was so large that Jesus

and his disciples were not even able to eat 21 His family heard about this Sothey went to take charge of him They said ldquoHe is out of his mindrdquo

22 Some teachers of the law were there They had come down from Jeru-salem They said ldquoHe is controlled by Beelzebul He is driving out demonsby the power of the prince of demonsrdquo

23 So Jesus called them over to him He began to speak to them using sto-

ries He said ldquoHow can Satan drive out Satan24

If a kingdom fights againstitself it canrsquot stand 25 If a family is divided it canrsquot stand 26 And if Satanfights against himself and his helpers are divided he canrsquot stand That isthe end of him 27 In fact none of you can enter a strong manrsquos house unless you tie him up first Then you can steal things from his house 28 What Irsquomabout to tell you is true Everyonersquos sins and evil words against God will beforgiven 29 But whoever speaks evil things against the Holy Spirit will neverbe forgiven Their guilt will last foreverrdquo

30 Jesus said this because the teachers of the law were saying ldquoHe has an

evil spiritrdquo

Jesusrsquo Mother and Brothers31 Jesusrsquo mother and brothers came and stood outside They sent some-

one in to get him 32 A crowd was sitting around Jesus They told him ldquoYourmother and your brothers are outside They are looking for yourdquo

33 ldquoWho is my mother Who are my brothersrdquo he asked34 Then Jesus looked at the people sitting in a circle around him He said

ldquoHere is my mother Here are my brothers 35 Anyone who does what God wants is my brother or sister or motherrdquo

The Story of the Farmer

4 Again Jesus began to teach by the Sea of Galilee The crowd that gatheredaround him was very large So he got into a boat He sat down in it out on

the lake All the people were along the shore at the waterrsquos edge 2 He taughtthem many things using stories In his teaching he said 3 ldquoListen A farmer went out to plant his seed 4 He scattered the seed on the ground Some fellon a path Birds came and ate it up 5 Some seed fell on rocky places wherethere wasnrsquot much soil The plants came up quickly because the soil wasnrsquotdeep 6 When the sun came up it burned the plants They dried up becausethey had no roots 7 Other seed fell among thorns The thorns grew up andcrowded out the plants So the plants did not bear grain 8 Still other seedfell on good soil It grew up and produced a crop 30 60 or even 100 timesmore than the farmer plantedrdquo

9 Then Jesus said ldquoWhoever has ears should listenrdquo10 Later Jesus was alone The 12 disciples asked him about the stories So

did the others around him 11 He told them ldquoThe secret of Godrsquos kingdom

has been given to you But to outsiders everything is told using stories12

Inthat way

ldquo lsquoThey will see but never know what they are seeing They will hear but never understand Otherwise they might turn and be forgivenrsquo rdquo (Isaiah 6910)

13 Then Jesus said to them ldquoDonrsquot you understand this story Then how will you understand any stories of this kind 14 The seed the farmer plantsis Godrsquos message 15 What is seed scattered on a path like The message is

planted The people hear the message Then Satan comes He takes awaythe message that was planted in them 16 And what is seed scattered onrocky places like The people hear the message At once they receive it with joy 17 But they have no roots So they last only a short time They quickly fallaway from the faith when trouble or suffering comes because of the mes-sage 18 And what is seed scattered among thorns like The people hear themessage 19 But then the worries of this life come to them Wealth comes with its false promises The people also long for other things All of these arethe kinds of things that crowd out the message They keep it from produc-

ing fruit 20 And what is seed scattered on good soil like The people hear themessage They accept it They produce a good crop 30 60 or even 100 timesmore than the farmer plantedrdquo

A Lamp on a Stand 21 Jesus said to them ldquoDo you bring in a lamp to put it under a large bowl

or a bed Donrsquot you put it on its stand 22 What is hidden is meant to beseen And what is put out of sight is meant to be brought out into the open23 Whoever has ears should listenrdquo

24 ldquoThink carefully about what you hearrdquo he said ldquoAs you give so you will

receive In fact you will receive even more 25 Whoever has something willbe given more Whoever has nothing even what they have will be takenaway from themrdquo

The Story of the Growing Seed 26 Jesus also said ldquoHere is what Godrsquos kingdom is like A farmer scatters

seed on the ground 27 Night and day the seed comes up and grows It hap-pens whether the farmer sleeps or gets up He doesnrsquot know how it hap-pens 28 All by itself the soil produces grain First the stalk comes up Thenthe head appears Finally the full grain appears in the head 29 Before longthe grain ripens So the farmer cuts it down because the harvest is readyrdquo

The Story of the Mustard Seed 30 Again Jesus said ldquoWhat can we say Godrsquos kingdom is like What story

can we use to explain it 31 It is like a mustard seed which is the smallest ofall seeds on earth 32 But when you plant the seed it grows It becomes thelargest of all garden plants Its branches are so big that birds can rest in its

shaderdquo33 Using many stories like these Jesus spoke the word to them He toldthem as much as they could understand 34 He did not say anything to them without using a story But when he was alone with his disciples he ex-plained everything

Jesus Calms the Storm35 When evening came Jesus said to his disciples ldquoLetrsquos go over to the

other side of the lakerdquo 36 They left the crowd behind And they took him

along in a boat just as he was There were also other boats with him37

A wild storm came up Waves crashed over the boat It was about to sink38 Jesus was in the back sleeping on a cushion The disciples woke him upThey said ldquoTeacher Donrsquot you care if we drownrdquo

39 He got up and ordered the wind to stop He said to the waves ldquoQuiet Bestillrdquo Then the wind died down And it was completely calm

40 He said to his disciples ldquoWhy are you so afraid Donrsquot you have anyfaith at all yetrdquo

41 They were terrified They asked each other ldquoWho is this Even the wind

and the waves obey himrdquo

Jesus Heals a Man Controlled by Demons

5They went across the Sea of Galilee to the area of the Gerasenes 2 Jesusgot out of the boat A man controlled by an evil spirit came from the

tombs to meet him 3 The man lived in the tombs No one could keep him

tied up anymore Not even a chain could hold him 4 His hands and feet hadoften been chained But he tore the chains apart And he broke the ironcuffs on his ankles No one was strong enough to control him 5 Night andday he screamed among the tombs and in the hills He cut himself withstones

6 When he saw Jesus a long way off he ran to him He fell on his kneesin front of him 7 He shouted at the top of his voice ldquoJesus Son of the MostHigh God what do you want with me Swear to God that you wonrsquot hurtmerdquo 8 This was because Jesus had said to him ldquoCome out of this man youevil spiritrdquo

9 Then Jesus asked the demon ldquoWhat is your namerdquoldquoMy name is Legionrdquo he replied ldquoThere are many of usrdquo 10 And he begged

Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside 12 The demonsbegged Jesus ldquoSend us among the pigs Let us go into themrdquo 13 Jesus al-lowed it The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs There were about 2000 pigs in the herd The whole herd rushed down the steepbank They ran into the lake and drowned

14 Those who were tending the pigs ran off They told the people in thetown and countryside what had happened The people went out to see forthemselves 15 Then they came to Jesus They saw the man who had been

controlled by many demons He was sitting there He was now dressed andthinking clearly All this made the people afraid 16 Those who had seen ittold them what had happened to the man They told about the pigs as well17 Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area

18 Jesus was getting into the boat The man who had been controlled bydemons begged to go with him 19 Jesus did not let him He said ldquoGo hometo your own people Tell them how much the Lord has done for you Tellthem how kind he has been to yourdquo 20 So the man went away In the area

known as the Ten Cities he began to tell how much Jesus had done for him And all the people were amazed

Jesus Heals a Dead Girl and a Suffering Woman21 Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee in a boat It landed at the other

side There a large crowd gathered around him 22 Then a man named Jairuscame He was a synagogue leader When he saw Jesus he fell at his feet23 He begged Jesus ldquoPlease come My little daughter is dying Place yourhands on her to heal her Then she will liverdquo 24 So Jesus went with him

A large group of people followed They crowded around him 25 A woman was there who had a sickness that made her bleed It had lasted for 12 years26 She had suffered a great deal even though she had gone to many doctorsShe had spent all the money she had But she was getting worse not better27 Then she heard about Jesus She came up behind him in the crowd andtouched his clothes 28 She thought ldquoI just need to touch his clothes Then I

will be healedrdquo 29 Right away her bleeding stopped She felt in her body thather suffering was over

30 At once Jesus knew that power had gone out from him He turnedaround in the crowd He asked ldquoWho touched my clothesrdquo

31 ldquoYou see the peoplerdquo his disciples answered ldquoThey are crowdingagainst you And you still ask lsquoWho touched mersquo rdquo

32 But Jesus kept looking around He wanted to see who had touched him33 Then the woman came and fell at his feet She knew what had happenedto her She was shaking with fear But she told him the whole truth 34 Hesaid to her ldquoDear woman your faith has healed you Go in peace You arefree from your sufferingrdquo

35 While Jesus was still speaking some people came from the house of Jai-

rus He was the synagogue leader ldquoYour daughter is deadrdquo they said ldquoWhybother the teacher anymorerdquo

36 Jesus heard what they were saying He told the synagogue leader ldquoDonrsquotbe afraid Just believerdquo

37 He let only Peter James and John the brother of James follow him38 They came to the home of the synagogue leader There Jesus saw a lot ofconfusion People were crying and sobbing loudly 39 He went inside Thenhe said to them ldquoWhy all this confusion and sobbing The child is not dead

She is only sleepingrdquo40

But they laughed at himHe made them all go outside He took only the childrsquos father and motherand the disciples who were with him And he went in where the child was41 He took her by the hand Then he said to her ldquoTalitha koumrdquo This meansldquoLittle girl I say to you get uprdquo 42 The girl was 12 years old Right away shestood up and began to walk around They were totally amazed at this 43 Jesusgave strict orders not to let anyone know what had happened And he toldthem to give her something to eat

A Prophet Without Honor

6Jesus left there and went to his hometown of Nazareth His disciples went with him 2 When the Sabbath day came he began to teach in the

synagogue Many who heard him were amazedldquoWhere did this man get these thingsrdquo they asked ldquoWhatrsquos this wisdom

that has been given to him What are these remarkable miracles he is do-ing 3 Isnrsquot this the carpenter Isnrsquot this Maryrsquos son Isnrsquot this the brother ofJames Joseph Judas and Simon Arenrsquot his sisters here with usrdquo They were

not pleased with him at all4 Jesus said to them ldquoA prophet is honored everywhere except in hisown town He doesnrsquot receive any honor among his relatives or in his ownhomerdquo 5 Jesus placed his hands on a few sick people and healed them Buthe could not do any other miracles there 6 He was amazed because theyhad no faith

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples

Jesus went around teaching from village to village 7 He called the 12 dis-ciples to him Then he began to send them out two by two He gave themauthority to drive out evil spirits

8 Here is what he told them to do ldquoTake only a walking stick for your tripDo not take bread or a bag Take no money in your belts 9 Wear sandals Butdo not take extra clothes 10 When you are invited into a house stay thereuntil you leave town 11 Some places may not welcome you or listen to youIf they donrsquot leave that place and shake the dust off your feet That will be a witness against the people living thererdquo

12 They went out And they preached that people should turn away fromtheir sins 13 They drove out many demons They poured olive oil on many

sick people and healed them

John the Baptistrsquos Head Is Cut Off 14 King Herod heard about this Jesusrsquo name had become well known

Some were saying ldquoJohn the Baptist has been raised from the dead That is why he has the power to do miraclesrdquo

15 Others said ldquoHe is ElijahrdquoStill others claimed ldquoHe is a prophet He is like one of the prophets of

long agordquo16 But when Herod heard this he said ldquoI had Johnrsquos head cut off And now

he has been raised from the deadrdquo17 In fact it was Herod himself who had given orders to arrest John He

had him tied up and put in prison He did this because of Herodias She was the wife of Herodrsquos brother Philip But now Herod was married to her18 John had been saying to Herod ldquoIt is against the Law for you to be marriedto your brotherrsquos wiferdquo 19 Herodias couldnrsquot forgive John for saying that She wanted to kill him But she could not 20 because Herod was afraid of John

So he kept John safe Herod knew John was a holy man who did what wasright When Herod heard him he was very puzzled But he liked to listen toJohn

21 Finally the right time came Herod gave a banquet on his birthdayHe invited his high officials and military leaders He also invited the mostimportant men in Galilee 22 Then the daughter of Herodias came in anddanced She pleased Herod and his dinner guests

The king said to the girl ldquoAsk me for anything you want Irsquoll give it to yourdquo23 And he gave her his promise He said to her ldquoAnything you ask for I will

give you Irsquoll give you up to half my kingdomrdquo24 She went out and said to her mother ldquoWhat should I ask forrdquoldquoThe head of John the Baptistrdquo she answered25 At once the girl hurried to ask the king She said ldquoI want you to give me

the head of John the Baptist on a big plate right nowrdquo26 The king was very upset But he thought about his promise and his

dinner guests So he did not want to say no to the girl 27 He sent a man rightaway to bring Johnrsquos head The man went to the prison and cut off Johnrsquoshead 28 He brought it back on a big plate He gave it to the girl and she gaveit to her mother 29 Johnrsquos disciples heard about this So they came and took

his body Then they placed it in a tomb

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus They told him all they had done

and taught 31 But many people were coming and going So they did noteven have a chance to eat Then Jesus said to his apostles ldquoCome with meby yourselves to a quiet place You need to get some restrdquo

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a quiet place 33 But manypeople who saw them leaving recognized them They ran from all the townsand got there ahead of them 34 When Jesus came ashore he saw a largecrowd He felt deep concern for them They were like sheep without a shep-herd So he began teaching them many things

35 By that time it was late in the day His disciples came to him ldquoThereis nothing hererdquo they said ldquoItrsquos already very late 36 Send the people awayThen they can go to the nearby countryside and villages to buy somethingto eatrdquo

37 But Jesus answered ldquoYou give them something to eatrdquo

They said to him ldquoThat would take more than half a yearrsquos pay Should we go and spend that much on bread Are we supposed to feed themrdquo38 ldquoHow many loaves do you haverdquo Jesus asked ldquoGo and seerdquo When they found out they said ldquoFive loaves and two fishrdquo39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on

the green grass 40 So they sat down in groups of 100s and 50s 41 Jesus tookthe five loaves and the two fish He looked up to heaven and gave thanksHe broke the loaves into pieces Then he gave them to his disciples to passaround to the people He also divided the two fish among them all 42 All of

them ate and were satisfied 43 The disciples picked up 12 baskets of brokenpieces of bread and fish 44 The number of men who had eaten was 5000

Jesus Walks on the Water 45 Right away Jesus made his disciples get into the boat He had them go

on ahead of him to Bethsaida Then he sent the crowd away 46 After leavingthem he went up on a mountainside to pray

47 Later that night the boat was in the middle of the Sea of Galilee Jesus was alone on land 48 He saw the disciples pulling hard on the oars The

wind was blowing against them Shortly before dawn he went out to themHe walked on the lake When he was about to pass by them 49 they saw him walking on the lake They thought he was a ghost so they cried out 50 Theyall saw him and were terrified

Right away Jesus said to them ldquoBe brave It is I Donrsquot be afraidrdquo 51 Thenhe climbed into the boat with them The wind died down And they were

completely amazed 52 They had not understood about the loaves They were stubborn

53 They went across the lake and landed at Gennesaret There they tiedup the boat 54 As soon as Jesus and his disciples got out people recognized

him 55 They ran through that whole area to bring to him those who weresick They carried them on mats to where they heard he was 56 He wentinto the villages the towns and the countryside Everywhere he went thepeople brought the sick to the market areas Those who were sick beggedhim to let them touch just the edge of his clothes And all who touched hisclothes were healed

What Makes People ldquoUncleanrdquo

The Pharisees gathered around Jesus So did some of the teachers of thelaw All of them had come from Jerusalem 2 They saw some of his disci-

ples eating food with ldquouncleanrdquo hands That means they were not washed3 The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands tomake them ldquocleanrdquo Thatrsquos what the elders teach 4 When they come fromthe market they do not eat unless they wash And they follow many otherteachings For example they wash cups pitchers and kettles in a special way

5 So the Pharisees and the teachers of the law questioned Jesus ldquoWhy

donrsquot your disciples live by what the elders teachrdquo they asked ldquoWhy dothey eat their food with lsquouncleanrsquo handsrdquo6 He replied ldquoIsaiah was right He prophesied about you people who pre-

tend to be good He said

ldquo lsquoThese people honor me by what they say But their hearts are far away from me 7 Their worship doesnrsquot mean anything to me They teach nothing but human rulesrsquo (Isaiah 2913)

You have let go of Godrsquos commands And you are holding on to teachingsthat people have made uprdquo9 Jesus continued speaking ldquoYou have a fine way of setting aside Godrsquos

commands You do this so you can follow your own teachings 10 Mosessaid lsquoHonor your father and motherrsquo (Exodus 2012 Deuteronomy 516) He alsosaid lsquoAnyone who asks for bad things to happen to their father or mothermust be put to deathrsquo (Exodus 2117 Leviticus 209) 11 But you allow people to saythat what might have been used to help their parents is Corban Corbanmeans A Gift Set Apart for God 12 So you no longer let them do anything

for their parents 13 You make the word of God useless by putting your ownteachings in its place And you do many things like thisrdquo

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him He said ldquoListen to me everyoneUnderstand this 15-16 Nothing outside of a person can make them lsquouncleanrsquoby going into them It is what comes out of them that makes them lsquoun-cleanrsquo rdquo

17 Then he left the crowd and entered the house His disciples asked himabout this teaching 18 ldquoDonrsquot you understandrdquo Jesus asked ldquoDonrsquot yousee Nothing that enters a person from the outside can make them lsquoun-cleanrsquo 19 It doesnrsquot go into their heart It goes into their stomach Then itgoes out of the bodyrdquo In saying this Jesus was calling all foods ldquocleanrdquo

20 He went on to say ldquoWhat comes out of a person is what makes themlsquouncleanrsquo 21 Evil thoughts come from the inside from a personrsquos heart Sodo sexual sins stealing and murder 22 Adultery greed hate and cheatingcome from a personrsquos heart too So do desires that are not pure and want-ing what belongs to others And so do telling lies about others and beingproud and being foolish 23 All these evil things come from inside a personand make them lsquouncleanrsquo rdquo

Jesus Honors a Greek Womanrsquos Faith24 Jesus went from there to a place near Tyre He entered a house He did

not want anyone to know where he was But he could not keep it a secret25 Soon a woman heard about him An evil spirit controlled her little daugh-ter The woman came to Jesus and fell at his feet 26 She was a Greek born inSyrian Phoenicia She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter

27 ldquoFirst let the children eat all they wantrdquo he told her ldquoIt is not right to

take the childrenrsquos bread and throw it to the dogsrdquo28 ldquoLordrdquo she replied ldquoeven the dogs under the table eat the childrenrsquos

crumbsrdquo29 Then he told her ldquoThat was a good reply You may go The demon has

left your daughterrdquo30 So she went home and found her child lying on the bed And the de-

mon was gone

Jesus Heals a Man Who Could Not Hear or Speak 31 Then Jesus left the area of Tyre and went through Sidon He went downto the Sea of Galilee and into the area known as the Ten Cities 32 There somepeople brought a man to Jesus The man was deaf and could hardly speakThey begged Jesus to place his hand on the man

33 Jesus took the man to one side away from the crowd He put his fingersinto the manrsquos ears Then he spit and touched the manrsquos tongue 34 Jesuslooked up to heaven With a deep sigh he said to the man ldquoEphphathardquo

That means ldquoBe openedrdquo35

The manrsquos ears were opened His tongue wasfreed up and he began to speak clearly36 Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone But the more he did so the

more they kept talking about it 37 People were really amazed ldquoHe has doneeverything wellrdquo they said ldquoHe even makes deaf people able to hear Andhe makes those who canrsquot speak able to talkrdquo

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

8During those days another large crowd gathered They had nothing toeat So Jesus called for his disciples to come to him He said 2 ldquoI feel deep

concern for these people They have already been with me three days Theydonrsquot have anything to eat 3 If I send them away hungry they will becometoo weak on their way home Some of them have come from far awayrdquo

4 His disciples answered him ldquoThere is nothing hererdquo they said ldquoWherecan anyone get enough bread to feed themrdquo

5 ldquoHow many loaves do you haverdquo Jesus askedldquoSevenrdquo they replied6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground He took the seven loaves

and gave thanks to God Then he broke them and gave them to his disciples

They passed the pieces of bread around to the people7

The disciples alsohad a few small fish Jesus gave thanks for them too He told the disciples topass them around 8 The people ate and were satisfied After that the disci-ples picked up seven baskets of leftover pieces 9 About 4000 people werethere After Jesus sent them away 10 he got into a boat with his disciples He went to the area of Dalmanutha

11 The Pharisees came and began to ask Jesus questions They wanted totest him So they asked him for a sign from heaven 12 He sighed deeply Hesaid ldquoWhy do you people ask for a sign What Irsquom about to tell you is trueNo sign will be given to yourdquo 13 Then he left them He got back into the boatand crossed to the other side of the lake

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod 14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread They had only one loaf with

them in the boat 15 ldquoBe carefulrdquo Jesus warned them ldquoWatch out for the yeast of the Pharisees And watch out for the yeast of Herodrdquo

16 They talked about this with each other They said ldquoHe must be saying

this because we donrsquot have any breadrdquo17 Jesus knew what they were saying So he asked them ldquoWhy are youtalking about having no bread Why canrsquot you see or understand Are youstubborn 18 Do you have eyes and still donrsquot see Do you have ears and stilldonrsquot hear And donrsquot you remember 19 Earlier I broke five loaves for the5000 How many baskets of pieces did you pick uprdquo

ldquoTwelverdquo they replied20 ldquoLater I broke seven loaves for the 4000 How many baskets of pieces

did you pick uprdquo

ldquoSevenrdquo they answered21 He said to them ldquoCanrsquot you understand yetrdquo

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida22 Jesus and his disciples came to Bethsaida Some people brought a blind

man to him They begged Jesus to touch him 23 He took the blind man by

24 The man looked up He said ldquoI see people They look like trees walkingaroundrdquo

25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the manrsquos eyes Then his eyes wereopened so that he could see again He saw everything clearly 26 Jesus senthim home He told him ldquoDonrsquot even go into the villagerdquo

Peter Says That Jesus Is the Messiah27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi

On the way he asked them ldquoWho do people say I amrdquo28 They replied ldquoSome say John the Baptist Others say Elijah Still others

say one of the prophetsrdquo29 ldquoBut what about yourdquo he asked ldquoWho do you say I amrdquoPeter answered ldquoYou are the Messiahrdquo30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him

Jesus Tells About His Coming Death31 Jesus then began to teach his disciples He taught them that the Son

of Man must suffer many things He taught them that the elders would notaccept him The chief priests and the teachers of the law would not accept

him either He must be killed and after three days rise again32

He spokeclearly about this Peter took Jesus to one side and began to scold him33 Jesus turned and looked at his disciples He scolded Peter ldquoGet behind

me Satanrdquo he said ldquoYou are not thinking about the things God cares aboutInstead you are thinking only about the things humans care aboutrdquo

You Must Pick Up Your Cross34 Jesus called the crowd to him along with his disciples He said ldquoWho-

ever wants to be my disciple must say no to themselves They must pick up

their cross and follow me35

Whoever wants to save their life will lose it But whoever loses their life for me and for the good news will save it 36 Whatgood is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their soul 37 Or whatcan anyone trade for their soul 38 Suppose anyone is ashamed of me andmy words among these adulterous and sinful people Then the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Fatherrsquos glory with the holyangelsrdquo

9Jesus said to them ldquoWhat Irsquom about to tell you is true Some who arestanding here will not die before they see that Godrsquos kingdom has come

with powerrdquo

Jesusrsquo Appearance Is Changed 2 After six days Jesus took Peter James and John with him He led them up

a high mountain They were all alone There in front of them his appearance was changed 3 His clothes became so white they shone They were whiter

than anyone in the world could bleach them 4 Elijah and Moses appearedin front of Jesus and his disciples The two of them were talking with Jesus

didnrsquot really know what to say because they were so afraid7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them A voice came from the cloud

It said ldquoThis is my Son and I love him Listen to himrdquo8 They looked around Suddenly they no longer saw anyone with them

except Jesus9 They came down the mountain On the way down Jesus ordered them

not to tell anyone what they had seen He told them to wait until the Son ofMan had risen from the dead 10 So they kept the matter to themselves Butthey asked each other what ldquorising from the deadrdquo meant

11 Then they asked Jesus ldquoWhy do the teachers of the law say that Elijahhas to come firstrdquo

12 Jesus replied ldquoThatrsquos right Elijah does come first He makes all thingsnew again So why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much andnot be accepted 13 I tell you Elijah has come They have done to him every-thing they wanted to do They did it just as it is written about himrdquo

Jesus Heals a Boy Who Is Controlled by an Evil Spirit 14

When Jesus and those who were with him came to the other disciplesthey saw a large crowd around them The teachers of the law were arguing with them 15 When all the people saw Jesus they were filled with wonder And they ran to greet him

16 ldquoWhat are you arguing with them aboutrdquo Jesus asked17 A man in the crowd answered ldquoTeacherrdquo he said ldquoI brought you my

son He is controlled by an evil spirit Because of this my son canrsquot speakanymore 18 When the spirit takes hold of him it throws him to the groundHe foams at the mouth He grinds his teeth And his body becomes stiff I

asked your disciples to drive out the spirit But they couldnrsquot do itrdquo19 ldquoYou unbelieving peoplerdquo Jesus replied ldquoHow long do I have to stay with you How long do I have to put up with you Bring the boy to merdquo

20 So they brought him As soon as the spirit saw Jesus it threw the boyinto a fit He fell to the ground He rolled around and foamed at the mouth

21 Jesus asked the boyrsquos father ldquoHow long has he been like thisrdquoldquoSince he was a childrdquo he answered 22 ldquoThe spirit has often thrown him

into fire or water to kill him But if you can do anything take pity on usPlease help usrdquo

23 ldquo lsquoIf you canrsquordquo said Jesus ldquoEverything is possible for the one who be-lievesrdquo

24 Right away the boyrsquos father cried out ldquoI do believe Help me overcomemy unbeliefrdquo

25 Jesus saw that a crowd was running over to see what was happeningThen he ordered the evil spirit to leave the boy ldquoYou spirit that makes him

took him by the hand He lifted the boy to his feet and the boy stood up28 Jesus went indoors Then his disciples asked him in private ldquoWhy

couldnrsquot we drive out the evil spiritrdquo29 He replied ldquoThis kind can come out only by prayerrdquo

Jesus Speaks a Second Time About His Coming Death30 They left that place and passed through Galilee Jesus did not want any-

one to know where they were 31 That was because he was teaching his dis-ciples He said to them ldquoThe Son of Man is going to be handed over to menThey will kill him After three days he will rise from the deadrdquo 32 But theydidnrsquot understand what he meant And they were afraid to ask him about it

Who Is the Most Important Person 33 Jesus and his disciples came to a house in Capernaum There he asked

them ldquoWhat were you arguing about on the roadrdquo 34 But they kept quietOn the way they had argued about which one of them was the most im-portant person

Jesus sat down and called for the 12 disciples to come to him Then hesaid ldquoAnyone who wants to be first must be the very last They must be theservant of everyonerdquo

36 Jesus took a little child and had the child stand among them Then hetook the child in his arms He said to them 37 ldquoAnyone who welcomes one ofthese little children in my name welcomes me And anyone who welcomesme also welcomes the one who sent merdquo

Anyone Who Is Not Against Us Is for Us38

ldquoTeacherrdquo said John ldquowe saw someone driving out demons in yourname We told him to stop because he was not one of usrdquo39 ldquoDo not stop himrdquo Jesus said ldquoFor no one who does a miracle in my

name can in the next moment say anything bad about me 40 Anyone who isnot against us is for us 41 What Irsquom about to tell you is true Suppose some-one gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Mes-siah That person will certainly not go without a reward

Leading People to Sin

42 ldquoWhat if someone leads one of these little ones who believe in me tosin If they do it would be better if a large millstone were hung around theirneck and they were thrown into the sea 43-44 If your hand causes you to sincut it off It would be better for you to enter Godrsquos kingdom with only onehand than to go into hell with two hands In hell the fire never goes out45-46 ldquoIf your foot causes you to sin cut it off It would be better to enter Godrsquos

49 Everyone will be salted with fire50 ldquoSalt is good But suppose it loses its saltiness How can you make it

Jesus Teaches About Divorce

Jesus left that place and went into the area of Judea and across theJordan River Again crowds of people came to him As usual he taught

them2 Some Pharisees came to test Jesus They asked ldquoDoes the Law allow a

man to divorce his wiferdquo3 ldquoWhat did Moses command yourdquo he replied4 They said ldquoMoses allowed a man to write a letter of divorce and send

her awayrdquo5 ldquoYou were stubborn Thatrsquos why Moses wrote you this lawrdquo Jesus re-

ldquoBut at the beginning of creation God lsquomade them male and femalersquo(Genesis 127) 7 lsquoThatrsquos why a man will leave his father and mother and be joinedto his wife 8 The two of them will become onersquo (Genesis 224) They are no lon-ger two but one 9 So no one should separate what God has joined togetherrdquo

10 When they were in the house again the disciples asked Jesus about this11 He answered ldquoWhat if a man divorces his wife and gets married to an-other woman He commits adultery against her 12 And what if she divorcesher husband and gets married to another man She commits adulteryrdquo

Little Children Are Brought to Jesus13 People were bringing little children to Jesus They wanted him toplace his hands on them to bless them But the disciples told them to stop14 When Jesus saw this he was angry He said to his disciples ldquoLet the littlechildren come to me Donrsquot keep them away Godrsquos kingdom belongs topeople like them 15 What Irsquom about to tell you is true Anyone who will notreceive Godrsquos kingdom like a little child will never enter itrdquo 16 Then he tookthe children in his arms He placed his hands on them to bless them

Rich People and the Kingdom of God 17 As Jesus started on his way a man ran up to him He fell on his knees

before Jesus ldquoGood teacherrdquo he said ldquowhat must I do to receive eternalliferdquo

18 ldquoWhy do you call me goodrdquo Jesus answered ldquoNo one is good exceptGod 19 You know what the commandments say lsquoDo not murder Do not

22 The manrsquos face fell He went away sad because he was very rich23 Jesus looked around He said to his disciples ldquoHow hard it is for rich

people to enter Godrsquos kingdomrdquo24 The disciples were amazed at his words But Jesus said again ldquoChil-

dren how hard it is to enter Godrsquos kingdom 25 Is it hard for a camel to gothrough the eye of a needle It is even harder for someone who is rich toenter Godrsquos kingdomrdquo

26 The disciples were even more amazed They said to each other ldquoThen who can be savedrdquo

27 Jesus looked at them and said ldquoWith people this is impossible But not with God All things are possible with Godrdquo

28 Then Peter spoke up ldquoWe have left everything to follow yourdquo29 ldquoWhat Irsquom about to tell you is truerdquo Jesus replied ldquoHas anyone left

home or family or fields for me and the good news 30 They will receive

100 times as much in this world They will have homes and families andfields But they will also be treated badly by others In the world to comethey will live forever 31 But many who are first will be last And the last willbe firstrdquo

Jesus Speaks a Third Time About His Coming Death32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem Jesus was leading the way The

disciples were amazed Those who followed were afraid Again Jesus tookthe 12 disciples to one side He told them what was going to happen to him

33 ldquoWe are going up to Jerusalemrdquo he said ldquoThe Son of Man will be handedover to the chief priests and the teachers of the law They will sentence himto death Then they will hand him over to the Gentiles 34 They will make funof him and spit on him They will whip him and kill him Three days later he will rise from the deadrdquo

James and John Ask Jesus for a Favor 35 James and John came to Jesus They were the sons of Zebedee ldquoTeacherrdquo

they said ldquowe would like to ask you for a favorrdquo36 ldquoWhat do you want me to do for yourdquo he asked37 They replied ldquoLet one of us sit at your right hand in your glorious king-

dom Let the other one sit at your left handrdquo38 ldquoYou donrsquot know what yoursquore asking forrdquo Jesus said ldquoCan you drink the

cup of suffering I drink Or can you go through the baptism of suffering Imust go throughrdquo

39 ldquoWe canrdquo they answeredJesus said to them ldquoYou will drink the cup I drink And you will go through

the baptism I go through 40 But it is not for me to say who will sit at my rightor left hand These places belong to those they are prepared forrdquo

41 The other ten disciples heard about it They became angry at James andJohn 42 Jesus called them together He said ldquoYou know about those who arerulers of the Gentiles They hold power over their people Their high offi-cials order them around 43 Donrsquot be like that Instead anyone who wants tobe important among you must be your servant 44 And anyone who wants tobe first must be the slave of everyone 45 Even the Son of Man did not cometo be served Instead he came to serve others He came to give his life as theprice for setting many people freerdquo

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight 46 Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho They were leaving the city A

large crowd was with them A blind man was sitting by the side of the roadbegging His name was Bartimaeus Bartimaeus means Son of Timaeus47 He heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by So he began to shoutldquoJesus Son of David Have mercy on merdquo

48 Many people commanded him to stop They told him to be quiet Buthe shouted even louder ldquoSon of David Have mercy on merdquo

49 Jesus stopped and said ldquoCall for himrdquoSo they called out to the blind man ldquoCheer up Get up on your feet Jesus

is calling for yourdquo 50 He threw his coat to one side Then he jumped to hisfeet and came to Jesus

51 ldquoWhat do you want me to do for yourdquo Jesus asked himThe blind man said ldquoRabbi I want to be able to seerdquo52 ldquoGordquo said Jesus ldquoYour faith has healed yourdquo Right away he could see

And he followed Jesus along the road

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

11 As they all approached Jerusalem they came to Bethphage and Beth-any at the Mount of Olives Jesus sent out two of his disciples 2 He said

4 So they left They found a colt out in the street It was tied at a doorway

Some people standing there asked ldquoWhat are you doing Why are you untying that coltrdquo 6 They answered as Jesus had told them toSo the people let them go 7 They brought the colt to Jesus They threw theircoats over it Then he sat on it 8 Many people spread their coats on the roadOthers spread branches they had cut in the fields 9 Those in front and thosein back shouted

11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courtyard He lookedaround at everything But it was already late So he went out to Bethany with the 12 disciples

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears Out the Temple Courtyard 12 The next day as Jesus and his disciples were leaving Bethany they were

hungry 13 Not too far away he saw a fig tree It was covered with leaves He went to find out if it had any fruit When he reached it he found nothing butleaves It was not the season for figs 14 Then Jesus said to the tree ldquoMay noone ever eat fruit from you againrdquo And his disciples heard him say it

15 When Jesus reached Jerusalem he entered the temple courtyard Hebegan to drive out those who were buying and selling there He turned overthe tables of the people who were exchanging money He also turned overthe benches of those who were selling doves 16 He would not allow any-

one to carry items for sale through the temple courtyard17

Then he taughtthem He told them ldquoIt is written that the Lord said lsquoMy house will be calleda house where people from all nations can prayrsquo (Isaiah 567) But you havemade it a lsquoden for robbersrsquo rdquo (Jeremiah 711)

18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard about this They be-gan looking for a way to kill Jesus They were afraid of him because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching

19 When evening came Jesus and his disciples left the city

The Dried-Up Fig Tree 20 In the morning as Jesus and his disciples walked along they saw thefig tree It was dried up all the way down to the roots 21 Peter rememberedHe said to Jesus ldquoRabbi look The fig tree you put a curse on has dried uprdquo

22 ldquoHave faith in Godrdquo Jesus said 23 What Irsquom about to tell you is true Sup-pose someone says to this mountain lsquoGo and throw yourself into the searsquoThey must not doubt in their heart They must believe that what they say will happen Then it will be done for them 24 So I tell you when you pray forsomething believe that you have already received it Then it will be yours25-26 And when you stand praying forgive anyone you have anything againstThen your Father in heaven will forgive your sinsrdquo

The Authority of Jesus Is Questioned 27 Jesus and his disciples arrived again in Jerusalem He was walking in

the temple courtyard Then the chief priests came to him The teachers of

29 Jesus replied ldquoI will ask you one question Answer me and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things 30 Was Johnrsquos baptism from

heaven Or did it come from human authority Tell merdquo31 They talked to each other about it They said ldquoIf we say lsquoFrom heavenrsquo

he will ask lsquoThen why didnrsquot you believe himrsquo 32 But what if we say lsquoFromhuman authorityrsquordquo They were afraid of the people Everyone believed thatJohn really was a prophet

33 So they answered Jesus ldquoWe donrsquot knowrdquoJesus said ldquoThen I wonrsquot tell you by what authority I am doing these

things eitherrdquo

The Story of the Renters

12Jesus began to speak to the people using stories He said ldquoA manplanted a vineyard He put a wall around it He dug a pit for a wine-

press He also built a lookout tower He rented the vineyard out to somefarmers Then he went to another place 2 At harvest time he sent a servantto the renters He told the servant to collect from them some of the fruit ofthe vineyard 3 But they grabbed the servant and beat him up Then theysent him away with nothing 4 So the man sent another servant to the rent-

ers They hit this one on the head and treated him badly5

The man sent stillanother servant The renters killed him The man sent many others Therenters beat up some of them They killed the others

6 ldquoThe man had one person left to send It was his son and he loved himHe sent him last of all He said lsquoThey will respect my sonrsquo

7 ldquoBut the renters said to each other lsquoThis is the one who will receive allthe ownerrsquos property someday Come letrsquos kill him Then everything will beoursrsquo 8 So they took him and killed him They threw him out of the vineyard

9 ldquoWhat will the owner of the vineyard do then He will come and kill

those renters He will give the vineyard to others 10 Havenrsquot you read whatthis part of Scripture says

ldquo lsquoThe stone the builders didnrsquot accept has become the most important stone of all 11 The Lord has done it It is wonderful in our eyesrsquordquo (Psalm 1182223)

12 Then the chief priests the teachers of the law and the elders lookedfor a way to arrest Jesus They knew he had told the story against them But

they were afraid of the crowd So they left him and went away

Is It Right to Pay the Royal Tax to Caesar 13 Later the religious leaders sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to

Jesus They wanted to trap him with his own words 14 They came to him andsaid ldquoTeacher we know that you are a man of honor You donrsquot let other

people tell you what to do or say You donrsquot care how important they areBut you teach the way of God truthfully Is it right to pay the royal tax toCaesar or not 15 Should we pay or shouldnrsquot werdquo

But Jesus knew what they were trying to do So he asked ldquoWhy are youtrying to trap me Bring me a silver coin Let me look at itrdquo 16 They broughtthe coin He asked them ldquoWhose picture is this And whose wordsrdquo

ldquoCaesarrsquosrdquo they replied17 Then Jesus said to them ldquoGive back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar

And give back to God what belongs to GodrdquoThey were amazed at him

Marriage When the Dead Rise 18

The Sadducees came to Jesus with a question They do not believe thatpeople rise from the dead 19 ldquoTeacherrdquo they said ldquoMoses wrote for us abouta man who died and didnrsquot have any children But he did leave a wife be-hind That manrsquos brother must get married to the widow He must providechildren to carry on his dead brotherrsquos name 20 There were seven brothersThe first one got married He died without leaving any children 21 The sec-ond one got married to the widow He also died and left no child It was thesame with the third one 22 In fact none of the seven left any children Lastof all the woman died too 23 When the dead rise whose wife will she be All

seven of them were married to herrdquo24 Jesus replied ldquoYou are mistaken because you do not know the Scrip-

tures And you do not know the power of God 25 When the dead rise they wonrsquot get married And their parents wonrsquot give them to be married They will be like the angels in heaven 26 What about the dead rising Havenrsquot youread in the Book of Moses the story of the burning bush God said to Mo-ses lsquoI am the God of Abraham I am the God of Isaac And I am the God ofJacobrsquo (Exodus 36) 27 He is not the God of the dead He is the God of the living

You have made a big mistakerdquoThe Most Important Commandment

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard the Sadducees arguingHe noticed that Jesus had given the Sadducees a good answer So he askedhim ldquoWhich is the most important of all the commandmentsrdquo

29 Jesus answered ldquoHere is the most important one Moses said lsquoIsraellisten to me The Lord is our God The Lord is one 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul Love him with all your mind and

with all your strengthrsquo (Deuteronomy 645) 31 And here is the second one lsquoLove your neighbor as you love yourselfrsquo (Leviticus 1918) There is no command-ment more important than theserdquo

32 ldquoYou have spoken well teacherrdquo the man replied ldquoYou are right insaying that God is one There is no other God but him 33 To love God withall your heart and mind and strength is very important So is loving your

34 Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely He said to him ldquoYou arenot far from Godrsquos kingdomrdquo From then on no one dared to ask Jesus any

Whose Son Is the Messiah 35 Jesus was teaching in the temple courtyard He asked ldquoWhy do the

teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David 36 The HolySpirit spoke through David himself David said

ldquo lsquoThe Lord said to my Lord ldquoSit at my right hand

until I put your enemies under your controlrdquo rsquo (Psalm 1101)

37 David himself calls him lsquoLordrsquo So how can he be Davidrsquos sonrdquoThe large crowd listened to Jesus with delight

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law 38 As he taught he said ldquoWatch out for the teachers of the law They like

to walk around in long robes They like to be greeted with respect in the

market39

They love to have the most important seats in the synagoguesThey also love to have the places of honor at dinners 40 They take over thehouses of widows They say long prayers to show off God will punish thesemen very muchrdquo

The Widowrsquos Offering 41 Jesus sat down across from the place where people put their temple of-

ferings He watched the crowd putting their money into the offering boxesMany rich people threw large amounts into them 42 But a poor widow came

and put in two very small copper coins They were worth only a few pen-nies43 Jesus asked his disciples to come to him He said ldquoWhat Irsquom about to

tell you is true That poor widow has put more into the offering box thanall the others 44 They all gave a lot because they are rich But she gave eventhough she is poor She put in everything she had That was all she had tolive onrdquo

When the Temple Will Be Destroyed and the Signs of the End

13 Jesus was leaving the temple One of his disciples said to him ldquoLookTeacher What huge stones What wonderful buildingsrdquo

2 ldquoDo you see these huge buildingsrdquo Jesus asked ldquoNot one stone here will be left on top of another Every stone will be thrown downrdquo

3 Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple PeterJames John and Andrew asked him a question in private 4 ldquoTell usrdquo they

5 Jesus said to them ldquoKeep watch Be careful that no one fools you 6 Many will come in my name They will claim lsquoI am hersquo They will fool many peo-ple 7 You will hear about wars You will also hear people talking about fu-ture wars Donrsquot be alarmed These things must happen But the end stillisnrsquot here 8 Nation will fight against nation Kingdom will fight against king-dom There will be earthquakes in many places People will go hungry Allthese things are the beginning of birth pains

9 ldquoWatch out You will be handed over to the local courts You will be whipped in the synagogues You will stand in front of governors and kingsbecause of me In that way you will be witnesses to them 10 The good news

has to be preached to all nations before the end comes11

You will be ar-rested and brought to trial But donrsquot worry ahead of time about what you will say Just say what God brings to your mind at the time It is not youspeaking but the Holy Spirit

12 ldquoBrothers will hand over brothers to be killed Fathers will hand overtheir children Children will rise up against their parents and have them putto death 13 Everyone will hate you because of me But the one who remainsstrong in the faith will be saved

14 ldquoYou will see lsquothe hated thing that destroysrsquo (Daniel 927 1131 1211) It will

stand where it does not belong The reader should understand this Thenthose who are in Judea should escape to the mountains 15 No one on theroof should go down into the house to take anything out 16 No one in thefield should go back to get their coat 17 How awful it will be in those daysfor pregnant women How awful for nursing mothers 18 Pray that this willnot happen in winter 19 Those days will be worse than any others from thetime God created the world until now And there will never be any like themagain

The Day and Hour Are Not Known32 ldquoBut no one knows about that day or hour Not even the angels in heaven

know The Son does not know Only the Father knows 33 Keep watch Stay

awake You do not know when that time will come34

Itrsquos like a man goingaway He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge Each one is givena task to do He tells the one at the door to keep watch

35 ldquoSo keep watch You do not know when the owner of the house willcome back It may be in the evening or at midnight It may be when therooster crows or at dawn 36 He may come suddenly So do not let him find you sleeping 37 What I say to you I say to everyone lsquoWatchrsquo rdquo

A Woman Pours Perfume on Jesus at Bethany

14 The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two daysaway The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to ar-

rest Jesus secretly They wanted to kill him 2 ldquoBut not during the feastrdquo theysaid ldquoThe people may stir up troublerdquo

3 Jesus was in Bethany He was at the table in the home of Simon whohad a skin disease A woman came with a special sealed jar It contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard She broke the jar open andpoured the perfume on Jesusrsquo head

4 Some of the people there became angry They said to one another ldquoWhy waste this perfume 5 It could have been sold for more than a yearrsquos payThe money could have been given to poor peoplerdquo So they found fault withthe woman

6 ldquoLeave her alonerdquo Jesus said ldquoWhy are you bothering her She has donea beautiful thing to me 7 You will always have poor people with you Youcan help them any time you want to But you will not always have me 8 Shedid what she could She poured perfume on my body to prepare me to beburied 9 What Irsquom about to tell you is true What she has done will be told

anywhere the good news is preached all over the world It will be told inmemory of herrdquo

10 Judas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples He went to the chief prieststo hand Jesus over to them 11 They were delighted to hear that he would dothis They promised to give Judas money So he watched for the right timeto hand Jesus over to them

The Last Supper 12 It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread That was the time

to sacrifice the Passover lamb Jesusrsquo disciples asked him ldquoWhere do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover mealrdquo

13 So he sent out two of his disciples He told them ldquoGo into the city A man carrying a jar of water will meet you Follow him 14 He will entera house Say to its owner lsquoThe Teacher asks ldquoWhere is my guest room Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciplesrdquo rsquo 15 He will show youa large upstairs room It will have furniture and will be ready Prepare for usto eat thererdquo

16 The disciples left and went into the city They found things just as Jesushad told them So they prepared the Passover meal

When evening came Jesus arrived with the 12 disciples18

While they were at the table eating Jesus said ldquoWhat Irsquom about to tell you is true Oneof you who is eating with me will hand me over to my enemiesrdquo

19 The disciples became sad One by one they said to him ldquoSurely youdonrsquot mean merdquo

20 ldquoIt is one of yourdquo Jesus replied ldquoIt is the one who dips bread into thebowl with me 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him Buthow terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man It wouldbe better for him if he had not been bornrdquo

While they were eating Jesus took bread He gave thanks and broke itHe handed it to his disciples and said ldquoTake it This is my bodyrdquo

23 Then he took a cup He gave thanks and handed it to them All of themdrank from it

24 ldquoThis is my blood of the covenantrdquo he said to them ldquoIt is poured out formany 25 What Irsquom about to tell you is true I wonrsquot drink wine with you againuntil the day I drink it in Godrsquos kingdomrdquo

26 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives

Jesus Says That the Disciples Will Turn Away 27 ldquoYou will all turn awayrdquo Jesus told the disciples ldquoIt is written

ldquo lsquoI will strike the shepherd down Then the sheep will be scatteredrsquo (Zechariah 137)

28 But after I rise from the dead I will go ahead of you into Galileerdquo29 Peter said ldquoAll the others may turn away But I will notrdquo30 ldquoWhat Irsquom about to tell you is truerdquo Jesus answered ldquoIt will happen

today in fact tonight Before the rooster crows twice you yourself will say

three times that you donrsquot know merdquo31 But Peter would not give in He said ldquoI may have to die with you But I

will never say I donrsquot know yourdquo And all the others said the same thing

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane 32 Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane Jesus said

possible the hour might pass by him 36 ldquo Abba Fatherrdquo he said ldquoeverythingis possible for you Take this cup of suffering away from me But let what you want be done not what I wantrdquo

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping ldquoSimonrdquohe said to Peter ldquoare you asleep Couldnrsquot you keep watch for one hour38 Watch and pray Then you wonrsquot fall into sin when you are tempted Thespirit is willing but the body is weakrdquo

39 Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing 40 Then hecame back Again he found them sleeping They couldnrsquot keep their eyesopen They did not know what to say to him

41 Jesus returned the third time He said to them ldquoAre you still sleepingand resting Enough The hour has come Look The Son of Man is about tobe handed over to sinners 42 Get up Let us go Here comes the one who ishanding me over to themrdquo

Jesus Is Arrested 43 Just as Jesus was speaking Judas appeared He was one of the 12 disci-

ples A crowd was with him They were carrying swords and clubs The chiefpriests the teachers of the law and the elders had sent them44 Judas who was going to hand Jesus over had arranged a signal with

them ldquoThe one I kiss is the manrdquo he said ldquoArrest him and have the guardslead him awayrdquo 45 So Judas went to Jesus at once Judas said ldquoRabbirdquo Andhe kissed Jesus 46 The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him 47 Then one ofthose standing nearby pulled his sword out He struck the servant of thehigh priest and cut off his ear

48 ldquoAm I leading a band of armed men against yourdquo asked Jesus ldquoDo you

have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me 49 Every day I was with you I taught in the temple courtyard and you didnrsquot arrest me But theScriptures must come truerdquo 50 Then everyone left him and ran away

51 A young man was following Jesus The man was wearing nothing but apiece of linen cloth When the crowd grabbed him 52 he ran away naked Heleft his clothing behind

Jesus Is Taken to the Sanhedrin53 The crowd took Jesus to the high priest All the chief priests the elders

and the teachers of the law came together 54 Not too far away Peter fol-lowed Jesus He went right into the courtyard of the high priest There he sat with the guards He warmed himself at the fire

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for somethingto use against Jesus They wanted to put him to death But they did not findany proof 56 Many witnesses lied about him But their stories did not agree

60 Then the high priest stood up in front of them He asked Jesus ldquo Arenrsquot you going to answer What are these charges these men are bringing against yourdquo 61 But Jesus remained silent He gave no answer

Again the high priest asked him ldquoAre you the Messiah Are you the Sonof the Blessed Onerdquo

62 ldquoI amrdquo said Jesus ldquoAnd you will see the Son of Man sitting at the righthand of the Mighty One You will see the Son of Man coming on the cloudsof heavenrdquo

63 The high priest tore his clothes ldquoWhy do we need any more witnessesrdquohe asked 64 ldquoYou have heard him say a very evil thing against God What do you thinkrdquo

They all found him guilty and said he must die 65 Then some began tospit at him They blindfolded him They hit him with their fists They saidldquoProphesyrdquo And the guards took him and beat him

Peter Says He Does Not Know Jesus66 Peter was below in the courtyard One of the high priestrsquos female ser-

vants came by67

When she saw Peter warming himself she looked closelyat himldquoYou also were with Jesus that Nazarenerdquo she said68 But Peter said he had not been with him ldquoI donrsquot know or understand

what yoursquore talking aboutrdquo he said He went out to the entrance to thecourtyard

69 The servant saw him there She said again to those standing aroundldquoThis fellow is one of themrdquo 70 Again he said he was not

After a little while those standing nearby said to Peter ldquoYou must be one

of them You are from Galileerdquo71 Then Peter began to curse He said to them ldquoI donrsquot know this man yoursquore talking aboutrdquo

72 Right away the rooster crowed the second time Then Peter remem-bered what Jesus had spoken to him ldquoThe rooster will crow twicerdquo he hadsaid ldquoBefore it does you will say three times that you donrsquot know merdquo Peterbroke down and cried

Jesus Is Brought to Pilate

15 It was very early in the morning The chief priests with the elders theteachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin made their plans So

they tied Jesus up and led him away Then they handed him over to Pilate2 ldquoAre you the king of the Jewsrdquo asked PilateldquoYou have said sordquo Jesus replied3 The chief priests brought many charges against him 4 So Pilate asked

The people could choose the one they wanted 7 A man named Barabbas was in prison He was there with some other people who had fought againstthe countryrsquos rulers They had committed murder while they were fight-ing against the rulers 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did

9 ldquoDo you want me to let the king of the Jews go freerdquo asked Pilate 10 Heknew that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him because they wanted to get their own way 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd Sothe crowd asked Pilate to let Barabbas go free instead

12 ldquoThen what should I do with the one you call the king of the JewsrdquoPilate asked them

The Soldiers Make Fun of Jesus16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace It was called the Praeto-

rium They called together the whole company of soldiers 17 The soldiersput a purple robe on Jesus Then they twisted thorns together to make acrown They placed it on his head 18 They began to call out to him ldquoWehonor you king of the Jewsrdquo 19 Again and again they hit him on the head with a stick They spit on him They fell on their knees and pretended tohonor him 20 After they had made fun of him they took off the purple robe

They put his own clothes back on him Then they led him out to nail himto a cross

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross21 A man named Simon was passing by He was from Cyrene He was the

father of Alexander and Rufus Simon was on his way in from the countryThe soldiers forced him to carry the cross 22 They brought Jesus to the placecalled Golgotha The word Golgotha means the Place of the Skull 23 Thenthey gave him wine mixed with spices But he did not take it 24 They nailed

him to the cross Then they divided up his clothes They cast lots to see whateach of them would get

Jesus Dies33 At noon darkness covered the whole land It lasted three hours 34 At

three orsquoclock in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice ldquoEloi Eloilema sabachthanirdquo This means ldquoMy God my God why have you desertedmerdquo (Psalm 221)

35 Some of those standing nearby heard Jesus cry out They said ldquoListenHersquos calling for Elijahrdquo

36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with wine vinegar He put it on a stickHe offered it to Jesus to drink ldquoLeave him alonerdquo he said ldquoLetrsquos see if Elijahcomes to take him downrdquo

37 With a loud cry Jesus took his last breath38 The temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom 39 A Roman

commander was standing there in front of Jesus He saw how Jesus died

Then he said ldquoThis man was surely the Son of Godrdquo40 Not very far away some women were watching Mary Magdalene wasamong them Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joseph wasalso there So was Salome 41 In Galilee these women had followed JesusThey had taken care of his needs Many other women were also there Theyhad come up with him to Jerusalem

Jesus Is Buried 42 It was the day before the Sabbath That day was called Preparation Day

As evening approached43

Joseph went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesusrsquobody Joseph was from the town of Arimathea He was a leading memberof the Jewish Council He was waiting for Godrsquos kingdom 44 Pilate was sur-prised to hear that Jesus was already dead So he called for the Roman com-mander He asked him if Jesus had already died 45 The commander said it was true So Pilate gave the body to Joseph 46 Then Joseph bought somelinen cloth He took down the body and wrapped it in the linen He put itin a tomb cut out of rock Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to thetomb 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where Jesusrsquo

body had been placed

Jesus Rises From the Dead

16The Sabbath day ended Mary Magdalene Mary the mother of Jamesand Salome bought spices They were going to use them for Jesusrsquo

body 2 Very early on the first day of the week they were on their way to the

tomb It was just after sunrise 3 They asked each other ldquoWho will roll thestone away from the entrance to the tombrdquo

4 Then they looked up and saw that the stone had been rolled away Thestone was very large 5 They entered the tomb As they did they saw a young

man dressed in a white robe He was sitting on the right side They werealarmed

6 ldquoDonrsquot be alarmedrdquo he said ldquoYou are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified But he has risen He is not here See the place where theyhad put him 7 Go Tell his disciples and Peter lsquoHe is going ahead of you intoGalilee There you will see him It will be just as he told yoursquo rdquo

8 The women were shaking and confused They went out and ran awayfrom the tomb They said nothing to anyone because they were afraid

9 Jesus rose from the dead early on the first day of the week He appearedfirst to Mary Magdalene He had driven seven demons out of her 10 She went and told those who had been with him She found them crying They were very sad 11 They heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen himBut they did not believe it

12 After that Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them This hap-pened while they were walking out in the country 13 The two returned andtold the others about it But the others did not believe them either

Later Jesus appeared to the 11 disciples as they were eating He spokefirmly to them because they had no faith They would not believe those whohad seen him after he rose from the dead

15 He said to them ldquoGo into all the world Preach the good news to ev-eryone 16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved But anyone who does not believe will be punished 17 Here are the miraculous signs thatthose who believe will do In my name they will drive out demons They willspeak in languages they had not known before 18 They will pick up snakes with their hands And when they drink deadly poison it will not hurt them

at all They will place their hands on sick people And the people will get wellrdquo

19 When the Lord Jesus finished speaking to them he was taken up intoheaven He sat down at the right hand of God 20 Then the disciples went outand preached everywhere The Lord worked with them And he backed uphis word by the signs that went with it
