Central Baptist has been working with Operation Christian Child for two years. Brian Gerbutavich introduced CBC to this mission outreach and has supervised it’s operation from the start.

Items are collected for the shoe boxes starting in May and running through mid November. Each month we are directed toward a certain theme for donations. We are notified by way of the monthly newsletter and the weekly church bulletin which items are to be collected for the current month. Categories for donations include School supplies, Per-sonnel Hygiene, Toys, Hard Candy and Miscellaneous items.

Last year we shipped 55 boxes. Our goal this year is to ship 100 boxes. Please note that this year we will be using plastic containers in lieu of shoe boxes. If shop-ping is not your thing, you can still support this ministry by donating towards the cost of shipping the shoe-boxes. A donation of $7.00 per box is requested by Samaritan’s Purse to cover project expenses such as shipment of the boxes. Please see Brian Gerbutavich if you have any questions .

Pastor Cal’s Corner

Dear friends,

I always tell everyone that the busiest time of the year for me is between Labor Day and

Columbus Day. It is also one of the happiest times. Everything is exciting and new. Sunday

School opens. New Bible studies begin. People return from vacation. Our worship services

get an infusion of energy with folks who are ready to recommit themselves to worship,

prayer and service.

We’ve seen that this Fall and it has inspired my preaching. On Sunday mornings we have been exploring the para-

bles of Jesus. I have been having fun with this sermon series. One week I walked around with a shepherd’s crook

to make my point. Last week I pulled out a bottle of wine and threatened to open it. I love Sunday mornings at

church. It is a time to come together to thank God. It is a time to be with others who love the Lord. It is a time to

see friends. It is a time to learn, explore, grow and strengthen our faith. As we worship together, we also give wit-

ness to the presence of God in our community. I can’t think of a better way to spend a morning. If you have been

away, I hope you will come back and join us.

We’ve taken the message of one of those parables and made it our theme at Central Baptist for the coming year.

In Luke 10 Jesus tells us about the Good Samaritan, a man who reached out to help his neighbor. We’ve decided

that in the coming months we want to make an effort to live out that parable as a congregation. So we are asking

every group, every Board, every member of the congregation to look for ways to reach out and help the neighbor

that God has put in life’s path. I hope you will share those stories with me as they happen. I think we will all be

blessed by them and God will be glorified.

On another note, I am excited about all that is happening here. The choir is back to lead worship. We have a few

new members but there is always room for more. In October we start preparing music for the Christmas Cantata. I

can’t wait. We’ve reorganized our youth groups (middle school and high school) and they are meeting regularly

and planning future get-togethers, service projects and exciting outings. They will join Truth Trackers (which will

meet on October 25th for the first time) as we provide a group for every age for the first time in a few years.

We have some great Bible study and Fellowship groups up and running. The men are studying Romans on Tues-

day mornings. Ephesians is being studied at Avondale on Thursday mornings. The new Alpha Course, a conver-

sation about Christian basics, kicks off on October 1st. You should check them out. Our monthly book club is

back and check out our reading list on page 10 of the newsletter. Finally, Janet’s photography class is back again

by popular demand. It is not too late to sign up for any of them.

I hope you will also check out these interesting events planned for the near future. On October 5th the American

Baptist Women will be here to hear missionary Katherine Niles speak. Brandon Donahue will be here in concert

on October 26th. He’s bringing a few friends and it is going to be great night of inspired music. We are planning

another mission trip to Mexico for 2014. Some of you got to meet Mercy Barnes at our Strawberry Shortcake

event the end of September. We are putting together a team to work with her now. You can be a part of that. Are

you up for scary fun? I am looking for a chaperone or two to go to the Lake Compounce’s Haunted Graveyard

with our teens. We go October 19th. In December we are planning a trip to the Brooklyn Tabernacle to see their

Christmas Show. It is supposed to be great! Look for details for all these events and more in our newsletters, web

site and Sunday bulletins.

The Trustees are now in the process of formulating our stewardship campaign for 2014. This process

involves assembling a line item preliminary spending plan to be presented at our fall business meeting

on Sunday, October 27, 2013. An integral part of this year’s considerations will be a focus on long

term planning and stewardship, and looking for congregational input as to ideas of what our goals and

ministries should be.

We are currently looking at temporary roof repair options and bids to accomplish them. We anticipate

that we may have to replace the sanctuary roof in another two to five years. Our other two goals this

fall are to postpone the parking lot upgrades until next year; but, still stripe the front entry driveway

and to fence the Nursery School playground to bring it up to code.

Please continue to keep our church and community in prayer as we go forward to maintain our minis-

try here at CBC. Please remember that you can serve with your time, talents, and financial gifts to

help support the ministry as the Lord has prospered and moves you.

The August financial results show that, although income was 3.4% lower than planned, we kept spending below our Plan amount. With the start of new programs in September, we hope to see increased giving to put us on track to hit the annual target by December. Also, the Trustees have deferred some non-critical repairs until next year, and that will help keep the expenses with-in our annual plan.

September is always a busy, yet exciting and rewarding month for your Board of Christian Education. Our focus is

of course, the resumption of Sunday School and Bible studies for our youth and adults. Programs offered are many

and extremely varied, both in content and day of the week, in order to reach out to every member of our congre-

gation, who, in turn, will hopefully, invite friends, neighbors and especially recent acquaintances to join them at a

Sunday Service or a study of their interest.

In addition to Sunday School classes for grades K thru senior high, our middle school youth meet on the first and

third Friday of the month starting September 20 at 6:00pm under the direction of Agnes Trebisacci and Marty

Champlin. Truth Trackers for grades K thru 5 will resume in late October with Cheryl Murray. Adult opportuni-

ties offered are intentionally varied, ranging from Baptist Identity and Beliefs to Tennis Lessons with Todd and a four

week photography course for beginners with Janet Gerbutavich. The 10th year of Bible Study at the historic Avon-

dale Chapel commenced Thursday, September 19 with the study of The Book of Ephesians. Join us for coffee and

fellowship at 8:00 am with study from 8:30 to 9:30. No previous Bible study is required, as this writer will readily

attest. Gary Engler, Norm Steadman, and Frank Perrin will make you feel right at home!

Your Board of Christian Education encourages your participation in our myriad of ac-

After not meeting in August, the Mission Board eagerly looks forward to the upcoming Fall Mission events discussed

at our September meeting. Some of those events are as follows:

Saturday, October 5, the ABCORI Women's Mission Caravan will meet at Central Baptist Church at 9AM. ABCUSA Mis-sionary Katherine Niles from the Congo will be the guest speaker. A light lunch will be served.

In October the World Mission Offering will be collected. Marcia Erskine will be providing information on this special

American Baptist Church offering.

The Mission Board heartily supports these events.

A BIG thank you to the Mission Board members for preparing and providing the August WARM Center meal. Everyone worked together to provide a well-received meal to 52 WARM Center guests. A BIG thank you goes to Richard DeBer-

nado and Tony Perrone who helped us cook and serve the meal. Church Council is scheduled to make the September

meal and the Trustee Board is scheduled to make the October meal. If you would like to help in any way, we are al-ways looking for volunteers. There is money available to help with the food ex-

penses for the meal. This is a wonderful local mission. We are grateful for your support.

PSALMS

“Blessed is the person who does not walk with the wicked, but delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. They will be like trees planted by streams of water yielding their fruit in season. Their leaves will not wither and they will prosper in whatever they do.” (Paraphrased from NIV– Psalm 1)

During the 2013 Lenten Season, I thought, rather than giving up something for lent, it might be more meaningful if I were to add to my spiritual life. Among the items I contemplated adding was to read through the book of Psalms. It

seemed doable and I liked the idea. So, I added readings from Psalms to my daily evening devotions. I planned to read a chapter each evening, but divided the more lengthy chapters into shorter segments. I started with Psalm 1 on

February 21, 2013 and finished with Psalm 150 on September 4, 2013. Immersing myself in Psalms for 28 weeks left me wanting more. So on September 5, 2013 I started reading the book following Psalms, Proverbs. You may ask,

why did I do this? I did it because of a commentary I read concerning Psalms that led me to want to know more.

What better way could there be than to read it myself. I will close with excerpts from the commentary that I found so interesting and compelling. I hope it will do for you, what it did for me.

“Praise God in His sanctuary, in His mighty heavens, for His acts of power and greatness. Let everything that has

breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.” (Paraphrased from NIV—Psalm 150)

PSALMS—Author: Multiple writers including David, Solomon, and Moses

When written: 1450 BC to 430 BC

“A positive relationship with God is built upon praise and worship. The book of Psalms, a

collection of the earliest recorded praise and worship of God, provides a place to turn

when times are tough, teaching us to praise God — no matter what!

This book is unique in that it encompasses such a wide range of human experience and

emotions: pain, joy, doubt, confidence, defeat, victory, hatred, and love. Whatever you

are feeling, you will find a psalm reflecting where you are spiritually. How comforting to

know you are not alone, that others have also walked in similar shoes.

The psalms of King David dominate this book, and for good reason. Perhaps more than

any other Bible character, David models the most essential elements of worship: humility,

repentance, and a longing for intimacy with God.

As you read the book of Psalms, make each song and Scripture your own. In fact, you’ll

find no greater source of joy and power in your daily life that to read — or sing! —aloud

the Psalms. As you do, you will find yourself embracing and claiming individual psalms for

your particular circumstances or in specific situations. You will find the great power and

comfort in words such as, “The Lord is my shepherd: (23:1) or “Your word is a lamp to

my feet and a light for my path” (19:105.”

Marie Bertsch will be working with our Nursery and Pre-

school class again this year. She teaches them about the love

of Jesus by her example

Erica Ballesteros will be team teaching the 3rd- 5th grade

negative influences. We are offering Gary

Smalley’s group study for parents titled,

Becoming a Good Samaritan...

This is a six-week session which began

on Sunday, September 22 at 9:00 am.

This DVD curriculum explores the

critical needs facing our world and will

help us, as Christians, understand how

we can live as Good Samaritans in the

world around us. (In the parlor at

church)

Nursery Care & Junior Church

offered during the worship hour We offer a childcare during the worship hour for those with

pre-school age children. The kids can enjoy supervised

play time in the nursery area at church while parents wor-

ship upstairs. Sign the children in prior to the start of wor-

ship. (The nursery is on the ground level of the church.)

Junior Church is a time of Bible story and activity time for

elementary age children that begins after the children are

dismissed from worship.

Opportunities For Fellowship and Study This Fall

We will meet each week at 9:00 a.m. for a

short devotion and time of prayer before

taking the courts for some tips and fun on

the court with Todd Higgins.

Capturing God’s Beauty.... A 4 week course in photography for beginners. What are all those dials on your camera? What do they do?

When do you use them?

Janet Gerbutavich will help you understand them. Bring your camera and the manual and begin to change

the way you take photographs. When you understand your camera you will see God’s creation in a whole new light.

Class size is limited to 5. Join a class (choose Tuesday or Thursday) for the first 4 weeks in October. Time: 6:30 -8:00pm

Mission speaker: Katherine Niles

Katherine and her husband, Wayne, work in the Congo with a

group of Christian professionals to train community leaders,

rural and urban, to be promoters of health practices in their

communities.

Katherine grew up in the Congo. Her dad (Dr. Dan Fountain) and

mom were ABC Missionaries as well. The Niles have two grown children.

The Avondale Bible Fellowship

A new class began its fall Bible Study on Thursday, September 19

at Avondale Chapel,11 Avondale Road. A study of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is the initial

offering of the fall series.

Fellowship “Hour” starts at 8:00 AM with Bible Study from 8:30 — 9:30 AM. No previous Bible study expertise is necessary to participate

in this timely study of God’s Word. All are welcome!

votions, fellowship & more

Circle 2- Women’s Fellowship Group Meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 9:00 am

The Needleworkers – Meets First and Third

Monday at 9:30 am The group meets at Nancy Balentine’s home - 35 Spruce

St., Westerly. Great fellowship and conversation follows.

There is also instruction available for most Needlework.

Senior Choir – Meets Thursday The Senior Choir meets each week from 7:00 – 8:30 pm

to prepare a weekly anthem for worship. If you like to

sing and want to be part of a fun group, then this is for

you. We also participate in special events like cantatas

and concerts during the year.

Youth Fellowship Groups

Truth Trackers – Meets the second and fourth Friday of the month begin-

ning the end of October. This group is for kids in grades

k – 5. Contact Cheryl Murray for information.

Middle School Youth – Brand New! Agnes Trebisacci and Marty Champlin

will be leading a Middle School Youth

Group this fall. They will be meeting

the first and third Friday’s of the month.

It promises to be lots of fun.

Invite your friends. Open to all kids in Middle School.

Senior High Gathering –New! Calling all senior high students! Meet at the church and

we will head down together. We will make plans for

future meetings for the coming year and talk about a

mission trip next summer. Your friends are welcome!

Pat and Jim Collins

In 1952 a young man from Dallas who had never seen an ocean enlisted in the Navy. While serving on a destroyer he participated

in an exchange with a submarine crew. His experience on the USS Corporal sold him on the submarine service. In the course of

tours on the USS Torsk and the USS Conger, he attended a Navy school in Newport. Needing a ride back to the New London Sub

Base, he found one with a sailor going to Westerly. Jim accepted the sailor's offer to spend the weekend and ended up going on a

blind date with Pat Swan. At first unimpressed, Pat was won over by Jim's persistence. On the way back from his sub's voyage to

the Caribbean, Jim bought rings in Bermuda and proposed to her at her sickbed with family in the doorway. Jim soon left his sub-

marine life, began a six year job with his father-in-law (who had misgivings about sailors) in the masonry business. And that was

how it all started for Pat and Jim Collins. Jim says they are now "velcroed" after years of work and travel interruptions.

Pat pointed to a house across Laurel Avenue when I asked where she had been born and reared. Her parents were Marylouise and

Clarence Swan. (The Collins' house has many swan figurines throughout.) She graduated from Westerly High with excellent skills

in accounting and with inspiration from her godmother, Mildred Bray, in the Trust Department of Washington Trust. She made

use of these skills in positions at Dower's department store, Richmond Furniture, Industrial Trust, and after 28 years with the

Coastal Savings Bank in New London, she retired from the position of assistant vice-president.

Meanwhile, Jim took courses that led him to obtain a job in design at Electric Boat and from that into engineering. He enjoyed

special projects that EB was engaged in, particularly one which sent the whole family to Grange-over-Sands, England, for a year.

Jim's role was to interpret designs used in the Polaris missile systems to the British firm that had obtained the designs for their

own work. This job resulted in many subsequent trips to England for business and several retirement trips, sometimes camping,

sometimes in B &B's, even one canal trip.

Pat and Jim have two daughters. Debra works for the Connecticut Dept. of Children and Families, particularly with children in

prison. Wendy lives in Mississippi and is assistant manager of a grocery store. Their granddaughter Leila also lives in Mississippi.

Retirement allows the Collins's to make much use of a huge, bus-like motor home with trips of several months in winter. While in

Westerly, Pat attends to the needs of relatives, does glorious needleworks (beautifully framed and displayed through their home),

reads novels, and provides direction and assistance to activities involving food. She has skills in cooking and catering that could

have been a career. Their home is used for family gatherings, sometimes as many as fifty people. She recalls being in charge of

food for a Baptist state convention being held at Central Baptist when she and Elsie Collings used both the kitchen at the Masonic

Hall and our own to handle the large meal production. She keeps records and has the menu she used. She has chaired the finance

committee for the Eastern Star assisted living home in Warwick and has been involved with the Deborah Chapter of Eastern Star

for 59 years. She and Jim enjoy geneology searches by computer, travel, and visits to cemeteries. The handsome Bengal cat, Gab-

by, is an important family member.

Jim is an avid reader, particularly of mysteries, does a little facebooking, and is the driver of the magnificent motor home...and its

mechanic. With a friend, Jim is the caretaker of a "working boat" at Mystic Seaport. Soon he will sail this eastern rigged dragger

named the RoAnn to New Bedford to participate in a festival. Pat says he is invaluable to neighbors as he is one of those men who

really can fix whatever isn't working.

Aunt Harriet Schilke lives down the street; sister Florence Young lives next door; cousin Sandy Christina lives around the corner;

and friend Winnie Hamilton lives across the street. What a rare comfort in these times of scattered families. And Central Baptist is

lucky to have all of them with us in regular attendance.

My brother is a mild-mannered young man who has a habit of making “loans” to people who, for one heart-tugging reason or another, need

money.

My husband and I often wonder if he isn’t too soft-hearted for his own

good. When we notice he needs a new coat or some repairs on his car, which he never seems able to afford, we sometimes urge him to go de-

mand his money back from those people he lent it to. He needs to be

tougher in dealing with them, we tell him; he should insist they repay him.

But he shrugs off our advice. “I’m not as bad a businessman as you
