The Church of Our HeartsOn Sunday, May 19, ten of our young people “confirmed” their Christian faith and made a commitment to become members of the church. It was a beautiful and meaningful day for so many of us as we heard their statements of faith which expressed their individual beliefs in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. They also shared their understanding of the church and a sense of their calling in this life. I was exceptionally moved, however, by what they wrote about the church, our church, Coral Gables UCC.

Each one in their own way expressed such deep appreciation and affection for this church, the church of their hearts:

“I have been coming to this church for my entire life. My mom went to Sunday school classes while I was still in her womb. I was baptized and took my first steps in

the Sanctuary, and I’ve spent a lot of my childhood running around the courtyard with friends.”

“I don’t know exactly what my calling in life is, but one thing I can say is that the church will be a part of it. I want to join the church because it is here where I feel my

budding faith can really evolve…”

“Writing this statement of faith made me realize how wonderful this church community is and how lucky I am to have all of you in my life.”

“One day I want to get married and have my children baptized here. I want to carry on the traditions of this church past the 90 years we’ve been here.”

I must say that I am always touched by people’s reasons for why they love this church. As one of the pastors, I am privileged to hear such stories, and not just on special occasions such as Confirmation, but in the day-to-day conversations in my office as new members make a commitment to join the church, or in those times when we share our grief and loss as a church family, or when folks gather together in fellowship, the topic of Gables UCC arises, and stories are shared about what a special place this is. I have the privilege of hearing from people who have found their way to this church after being away from church for decades, people who received strength in their struggles with the break-up of a relationship or a death in the family, parents seeking support in the challenges of raising children, and individuals who have been told they are no longer welcome in the churches they grew up in simply because they are gay. This is indeed the church of our hearts. I hope that you will always feel that your heart is safe with us and that it is made full by the love, compassion, energy, vitality, and hope we

Blessings,

Pastor Laurie

share as a church family.

Sunday, June 9 - Music Sunday

Be with us on this special Sunday as our Chancel Choir, Vocal Ensemble, and Bell Choir sing and ring their way into summer with a variety of inspiring music that will move and inspire us as they do each Sunday throughout the year.

While we will give the choir a little vacation during the summer months, we invite you to be part of our special summer choirs. See page 6 for more information.

Each Sunday morning, two worship experiences are offered:

9:00 a.m. An intimate and meditative worship experience in

Moye Chapel.

Holy Communion is celebrated weekly. A Coffee Bar is available before and following worship.

Special SundaysWorship with us throughout the summer.

Sunday, June 2 - A Celebration of Barbara Watson and of the Gables UCC Early Childhood Center

It is with deep gratitude for thirty-nine years of outstanding and dedicated leadership that we celebrate the well-deserved and well-earned retirement of Barbara Watson as the director of the Gables UCC Early Childhood Center. Words cannot adequately express our respect and appreciation for the work, devotion, and loyalty of Barbara over these many years. Please join us at this special 11:00 a.m. service as we welcome our pre-school families into our midst and commemorate Barbara’s many years of service. Following the service, there will be a reception in Barbara’s honor.

11:00 a.m. We gather in the beauty of our historic sanctuary to be engaged in meaningful worship which feeds our

spiritual hungers.

Join us after worship for coffee hour hosted by the women’s fellowship.

While each Sunday is special, here is a list of some very extra-special Sundays:

Sunday, June 16 - Father’s Day

In honor of Father’s Day, we will feature the return appearance of the Gables UCC Father’s Day Singers. All of our great-grandfathers, grandfathers, fathers, sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, uncles, and nephews are invited to meet Ron Morgan in the sanctuary at 10:15 a.m. to put together a sure-to-be-applauded men’s choral anthem.

As a special treat for all those who sang in, heard, and cheered on the Father’s Day Singers, we will have an ice-cream social following 11:00 a.m. worship sponsored by the Board for Congregational Life. Ice cream and your favorite toppings will be provided. How about

some hot fudge or marshmallow sauce, or maybe some sprinkles or M&M’s and, of course, some whipped cream? A morning not to be missed!

Sunday, June 16, 23, 30, and July 7 - The Elephant in the Pew Sermon Series Returns

If we are supposed to trust and follow God or the Universe’s plan for us, where do individual choice and accountability enter the equation? What is our purpose on this Earth? Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? Do you believe in reincarnation? Does the religious faith of a President matter? These are some of the questions that have been submitted for Pastor Laurie’s annual summer series called The Elephant in the Pew – sermons where she offers an honest and personal answer on an issue, topic, or question that we tend to sweep under the rug or ignore in order to keep the

peace … kind of like that proverbial elephant in the room, or in this case, in the pew. E-mail, write, or call Pastor Laurie, or go to the Gables UCC Facebook page (facebook.com/gablesucc) to leave your question. She just might preach on it! Then join us after worship for the Sermon Feedback Café. Have a little lunch and a conversation with Pastor Laurie about her sermon for the day. We will meet in Havighorst Lounge at 12:15 p.m.

Sunday, August 18 - Back to School Sunday. Welcome Home Everyone!

We will have a special service this Sunday followed by a mandatory meeting of all parents of children and youth who will participate in Sunday school or youth group. Childcare will be provided. Following the meeting, a pizza lunch, and SPLASH DAY. We will be swimming and eating lunch at three locations.*

*Middle and High School Youth will walk to the Venetian Pool.

*4th & 5th Graders will gather at Pastor Laurie’s pool with their parents.

*Infants-3rd Graders –pools and a slip-n-slide will be set up on the church lawn for our young members (parents must be present). Please be sure to bring your swim suit, sunscreen, and towel to church.

Your chance to rise, shine and give God the glory has arrived. ALL of God’s critters are invited to join us for one of the Gables UCC Summer Choirs. There is no pressure, no audition, and no such thing as mistakes. Meet Ron Morgan in the Sanctuary at 10:15 a.m. for a fun and relaxing singing experience. If you need assurance that this invitation includes YOU, contact Ron at [email protected]. “No matter who you are, or where you are on your musical journey, you are welcome in the Gables UCC Summer Choirs.”

June 16: The Gables UCC Father’s Day Choir. Boys and men of all ages are invited to sing.

Sunday, June 23: The Gables UCC Inter-Generational Family Choir. Here’s your chance to prove that singing is a life-long source of pleasure and that people of all ages can make beautiful music together.

Sunday, July 14: The Gables UCC Women’s Choir. Girls and women of all ages are invited to sing.

Sundays, July 28, August 11, and August 25: Chancel Choir

Editor’s Note: Many Thanks to our Fabulous Choirs! Throughout the year, our choirs brought us such beautiful and meaningful music. From our children’s choirs proclaiming the wonderful diversity of families on Mother’s Day, to our Men’s Chorus presenting the haunting “Were You There” on Maundy Thursday, to our Bell Choir ringing in the joy of Easter morning, to our Chancel Choir, who week after week provides spiritual nourishment through a diversity of music, to our Youth Choir who share the gospel message through puppets to our Youth Bell Choir who plays with such exuberance, to our soloists who move and touch us each Sunday, a BIG THANK YOU.

A very special thank you to Dr. Ronald Morgan, our Director of Music Ministry for his passion and commitment to high quality church music, to Dr. Greg Taylor, our parish musician for his enthralling instrumental music, and directors Anthony Cabrera, Alex Levin, and Melissa Hernandez for sharing their talent with us.

Going Green at Gables UCC We are continuing our goal to be green this summer. Over the past couple of years, we have sought to save not only the earth’s resources but also the church’s own financial resources by going to an almost-quarterly newsletter rather than a monthly one to reduce costs and use of energy, paper, and ink.

For up-to-the-moment news and information:

• visit www.gablesucc.org,

• read Laurie’s Lines,*

• check the bulletin boards around the church, or go to our Facebook page (http://facebook.com/gablesucc).

There will also be Sundays when we will not use printed worship bulletins.

The church will be closed every Monday. Except for extreme emergencies, no meetings, no custodians, no staff, no gatherings will be available on Mondays in our main building. It is our hope that with the reduction of lights, air conditioning, electricity, and custodial help, we will save resources of money and of the earth. *To receive Laurie’s Lines, contact Ron Morgan at [email protected] or at 305.448.7421 x 121.

Paperless Bulletins Have you ever walked into church on Sunday Morning and wished you could view the bulletin on your smartphone, iPad, or other tablet device? Well, now you can!

This summer, as part of our Going Green initiative, we will be implementing digital bulletins. Simply scan the QR (Quick Response) code available as you come in the sanctuary, or enter the link provided into your device’s browser. You will then instantly download the week’s bulletin to your device, while simultaneously saving the earth’s resources.

There will also be opportunities for congregational participation using your smartphone or tablet device, so don’t forget your technology this summer.

A strong theme in these stories is helping others. During July and August, children will have a chance to explore some familiar stories from the Gospel of Luke such as the compassionate Samaritan, the story of Jesus’ visit to the home of Mary and Martha, and a story of healing. Two sessions will focus on the letter to the Hebrews, introducing the children to the concept of the family of faith. They will also learn about the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.

Adult Spiritual ExplorationBible Explorations: A Tale of Twin PassagesSundays, June 2, 9, 16, 23 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. in Havighorst Lounge Taught by Rick Walters

This series focuses on the basic narratives of the whole Bible, its forms of literature and content along with contemporary interpretation based on emerging historical discovery and contemporary themes. The approach will connect closely with themes related to justice, poverty, race, LGBT rights, diversity, and progressive Christianity, not to mention a thinking faith. The method is to use twin passages, where the Biblical authors/editors consciously placed two stories together in order to shed meaning on each one.

Theologian in Residence 2013 RevisitedWednesdays, June 5, 12, and 19 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge

Join us as we watch Dr. Amy Jill Levine’s February 2013 presentation on DVD. Amy-Jill Levine is the professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and was our visiting Theologian in Residence in February of 2013.

Embracing Interfaith Cooperation DVD SeriesSundays, July 7, 14, 21, 28, and August 4 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. in Havighorst LoungeFacilitated by Pastor Megan

Speaker, author and founder of the Interfaith Youth Core, Eboo Patel, invites us to join him on a journey toward interfaith cooperation, where religion is no longer a barrier to cooperation, but a bridge. Eboo is inspired to build this bridge by his faith as a Muslim, his Indian heritage, and his American citizenship. In this engaging five session DVD resource, Eboo leads a small group of adults from diverse religious backgrounds (including Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Hindu) in a fascinating exploration of both the challenge and necessity of interfaith cooperation. Eboo has spoken at the TED Conference, The Clinton Global Initiative, and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. He writes regularly for The Washington Post, USA Today and the Huffington Post.

They attended ten classes which covered such topics as Church History, Discipleship, the Sacraments, the Bible, Theology, and the United Church of Christ. At the end of the series, each member of the class wrote an individual statement of faith, many of which will be shared as a testimony of faith during worship this fall.

Author Series: Eve EnslerSaturday June, 1 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary Playwright, author, activist, and one of Newsweek’s 150 Women Who Changed the World, Eve Ensler will be in our sanctuary on. to discuss her new book, “In the Body of the World.” An internationally bestselling author and an award-winning playwright. Ensler is the founder of V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls.

Her new book, In the Body of the World, comes out of her experience of working in the Congo, where she is shattered to encounter the horrific rape and violence inflicted on the women there. Soon after, she is diagnosed with uterine cancer, and through months of harrowing treatment, she is forced to become first and foremost a body—pricked, punctured, cut, scanned. It is then that all distance is erased. As she connects her own illness to the devastation of the earth, her life force to the resilience of humanity, she is finally, fully—and gratefully—joined to the body of the world. Free tickets are available at any Books and Books Bookstore or by calling/e-mailing Pastor Laurie at 305.448.7421 x 116 or [email protected].

Thinking About Becoming a Member of the Church?Inquirers’ Gathering Sunday June 912:15 p.m. in the Library

If you don’t want to check your mind at the church door…..

If you know that God’s love embraces all people, no matter who they are…

If you want religion with relevancy…

If you believe that faith requires tenderness and courage, a kind of big love that is committed to changing people’s lives…ours and others…

If you’ve wished for an open and embracing community of faith to nurture your spirit, grow your faith, and raise your children…

Then we warmly invite you to help us build the family of Gables UCC.

Come if you would like to inquire about becoming a member. Come if you just want to inquire more about who we are, what we stand for, and what we believe. This gathering will also give you a chance to meet some of our members and staff and give us an opportunity to meet you. Childcare and dinner will be provided. Contact Pastor Laurie at [email protected] to RSVP or for more information.

Gables UCC Recognized and Honored At the Annual Meeting of the Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ, our congregation was given two awards for support to the Florida Conference. We were recognized as the largest contributor in the Florida Conference to Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM) and for our “per member” OCWM giving.

Each year, UCC congregations designate a portion of their budgets to support OCWM to further the broader work and message of the UCC in their region, across the country, and throughout the world. OCWM helps to fund important work throughout the world including its disaster ministry. This ministry works with partners throughout the world (and throughout the U.S.) to respond to disasters, including hurricanes, tsunamis, wildfires, and tornadoes. Wider Church Ministries also partners with the Disciples of Christ denomination to share in global resources to further realize the prophetic vision of a just and peaceful world order with missionaries, volunteers, and educational programs.

Our Church’s Wider Mission also supports the local conference setting—a setting that provides direct support to the local congregation in a variety of ways. Conferences work with local congregations to provide training opportunities, manage outdoor ministries and camps, assist those in ministerial transition, and support new and renewing church development, among other programs and activities.

Congratulations and thank you to the members of Gables UCC for your generosity and willingness to be a leader in the Florida Conference and in the UCC.

YouthNews April and May of 2013The Senior High Youth Group has been preparing for its mission trip by overcoming the challenges presented to them at the Ropes Course, at FIU North Campus. The challenges consist of them getting from point A to point B as a group, or overcoming their fears by climbing to heights that take your breath away. The Ropes Course experience develops character, leadership skill and group cohesion.

This summer, members of the Senior High Youth Group will travel to Virginia to witness the effects of Mountain Top Removal (MTR), a coal mining process that presents a traumatic environmental crisis to the Appalachian Mountains. They will end their trip in Washington D.C. by advocating the end of MTR to the offices of our elected leaders. If you would like to help the youth reach Virginia on this mission trip, please contact Pastor Guillermo at [email protected].

The Confirmation Class of 2013 jumps at the opportunity to become active members of the church.

EarlyChildhoodCenterIt has been said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. There are some big changes happening at the Gables UCC Early Childhood Center as Barbara Watson, the director of the pre-school retires after thrity-nine years of service. Her legacy is one of the finest, most caring, and respected pre-schools in our community. We are so very grateful for her tireless devotion, energy, and vision over these many years.

We are pleased to announce that Janet Hiles has agreed to become the new director of ECC. She brings 17 years of experience with ECC as well as her own unique and special gifts and skills for leadership. Janet, our outstanding teachers, and our amazing staff will continue to provide the same high standards, integrity and values that we have come to expect and to cherish from the pre-school.

Be sure to join us on Sunday, June 2, which we are declaring Barbara Watson Day! We are encouraging all ECC families, past and present, and all teachers and staff, past and present, to join us during the 11:00 a.m. worship service for a celebration of Barbara. Following the service, there will be a reception in her honor.

Summer Fun at ECC runs from June 12 through July 19. For more information, please contact the ECC office at 305-444-9792.

The school year pre-school program begins on August 27. An Open House for all registered families is Monday morning, August 26. Justice&Witness Gay Pride 2013Once again, Gables UCC shared the good news of an inclusive and welcoming church as over 75 members and friends of the church marched in the Gay PRIDE parade on South Beach in May. We also held worship that morning before the parade and over 100 people caught a glimpse of our open-hearted and open-minded church community. Many thanks to Javier Castillo for leading us to another glorious showing, and Frank Carrasco for helping design another award-winning (at least in our minds) float. Gratitude to all who made signs, marched, worshipped, staffed the booth, and supported our efforts.

Special thanks as well to our Legacy Couple, Aileen Bartholomew and Ingrid Hunter, who share 37 years together.

Food for the SoulEmployee Ownership – the Inside StorySunday, June 23In the Chapel Following the 11:00 a.m. Worship ServiceA light lunch will be provided. $5 Donation Suggested

The Board of Justice and Witness invites you to Food for the Soul, an educational program about social justice issues. In the aftermath of the economic downturn, many people are examining which corporations are treating their employees fairly and providing opportunities for the employees to share in the profits of the corporation. Employee-owned companies are becoming more popular as people seek a new way of doing business. Our guest speakers, Steve and Lisa Becker, are local experts on the subject of employee-owned businesses.

Join us at 12:15 p.m., after the 11:00 a.m. worship service, in Moye Chapel where a light lunch will be served and an interesting and inspiring presentation will be given. For more information, please contact Santiago Leon at [email protected].

Economic Justice Book StudyThe Price of Inequality by Joseph StiglitzSix Tuesdays during SummerJune 11 & 25, July 9 & 23, August 13 & 277:00 - 8:30 p.m. in Room 6A In The Price of Inequality, Joseph Stiglitz passionately describes how unrestrained power and rampant greed are writing an epitaph for the American dream. The promise of the U.S. as the land of opportunity has been shattered by the modern corporate tyrants, who make up the 1%, while sections of the 99% across the globe vent their rage. That anger, seen in Occupy Wall Street and Spain’s Los indignados, is given shape, fluency, substance and authority by Stiglitz.

In 2001, Stiglitz, a former chief economist at the World Bank and arch critic of the IMF, won the Nobel Prize for economics for his theory of “asymmetric information.” When some individuals have access to privileged knowledge that others don’t, free markets yield bad outcomes for wider society.

Join us on the second and fourth Tuesday of June, July and August, starting on June 11. We will meet in room 6A, next to the Early Childhood Center, for a refreshing and progressive discussion about our economy.

The New Americans Campaign (NAC) is an unprecedented, nonpartisan national network of legal service providers who have come together to encourage and assist eligible legal permanent residents (LPRs) to become U.S. citizens. A consortium of national funders, including Miami’s Knight Foundation, has made an unprecedented commitment to this venture. This campaign is also active in the cities of Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York.

On June 22, 2013, the campaign is holding a one-day Citizenship Mega Workshop to process up to one thousand naturalization applications free of charge (excluding federal fees) at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus. If you want to participate as an applicant or as a volunteer, please go to their website: citizenshipflorida.org.

The NAC is supported in this effort by Ya es Hora… Cuidadania Univision 23 Campaign, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC, www.cliniclegal.org), as well as by the Miami NAC partners, including Catholic Legal Services, Hispanic Unity, Read2Succeed, Florida International University-School of Law Clinic, International Rescue Committee (IRC), Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), Center for Immigrant Advancement (CIMA), the Bethlehem Project, and the Miami-Dade Public Schools (MDCPS) ESOL Program.

City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado has issued a proclamation declaring June 22, 2013, as City of Miami Citizenship Day. Major civic and religious leaders will be joining this effort to stress the importance of “living the dream” and helping others attain U.S. citizenship as part of the journey towards freedom and becoming part of our democratic nation. Please, join us in this worthy cause!

Yoga July 1 - August 29 - All Classes in the ChapelYoga poses help develop a strong, healthy body by enhancing flexibility and improving circulation. Be good to yourself , choose a class; make it a precious part of your weekly schedule, and reap yoga’s rich benefits!

Free Yogic Breathing Class No Cost Monday Mornings, 8:30 - 9:00 a.m.Are you stressed? Yogic breathing is the answer. In yoga, we breathe deeply and slowly - in a more relaxed manner. Because you get more air into your lung with each breath, you don’t have to breathe as quickly. Your breathing slows down. The relaxation response kicks in. It’s almost magical: a simple thing like breathing correctly alters your consciousness and transforms stress into peace and quiet. Deep, conscious breathing reduces stress and many diseases.

With a little practice, you can take the breathing from the classroom to your world and feel its powerful effects.

Hatha Yoga Class$12.00 per Session Monday Mornings, 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.Thursday Evenings (New Time), 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. These 90 minute classes (both Monday and Thursday) are suited for most people and are open to all. Both our Monday and Thursday Classes encourage proper breathing, flexibility, strength and vitality in the body while calming the mind. All classes are $12.00 per person. ABOVE: The CAP ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble took the Jazz at Lincoln Center Stage on Sunday, May 12! (And, don’t they look sharp in the black attire with white silk ties and suspenders

made possible through Gables UCC member donations!)

The Community Arts Program ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble was one of 15 finalist bands chosen—from nearly 100 applicants from across the country and Canada—to take part in the prestigious 18th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. The three-day festival began on Friday, May 10, with the finalist bands’ arrival at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home, Frederick P. Rose Hall. The students made their way to Rose Theater through a congratulatory “cheer tunnel” of staff members, musicians and press. A One on One with Wynton Marsalis was followed by section workshops, rehearsals, a banquet dinner, and jam sessions with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JALCO).

Saturday, May 11, began with a JALCO open rehearsal, followed by Competition Part I. Competition Part II included the CAP ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble performance on Sunday morning, Competition Part III followed on Sunday afternoon. On Sunday evening in Rose Theater, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performed music of Duke Ellington and Gerald Wilson. The night culminated with a grand awards ceremony honoring outstanding soloists, sections and performances.

The Gables UCC Community Arts Program ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble returned home on Monday, May 13 with four awards presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic and Managing Director (and awesome trumpeter!), Wynton Marsalis. The four awards included Outstanding Sax Section (CAP members Brian Bibb, Felipe Lamar, Diego Aldarondo, Dexter Callender III and Danny Sagastume), Outstanding Trumpet Soloist (CAP member Fernando Ferrarone), Outstanding Clarinet Soloist (CAP member Dexter Callender III) and Trombone Solo Honorable Mention (CAP member John Colan Bukowski).

What a wonderful time! The CAP ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble extends its sincerest thanks to all who supported their incredible travel to New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. The experience is one that will only appreciate for each of our students. It is incredible opportunities like this that continue to create a most stunning aspect within the outreach provided by our Community Arts Program.
