the good shepherd’s voice - clover...
TRANSCRIPT
Dear People of Good Shepherd,
Change is in the air, and red Georgia
clay is everywhere! We are finally
seeing major changes to our property in
preparation for our new facilities.
Please continue to be patient with the
inconveniences of construction. It has
amazed me that in the midst of our
enormous mess, attendance on Sunday
morning and attendance in Sunday
School and youth have both been up.
Crammed into small spaces and often
feeling like a one-room school house,
you are not only still active in your faith
life here at Good Shepherd, but you are
also inviting your friends! We have new
member classes coming up again in
October because of all the new visitors
we've had over the last several weeks.
So, job well done!!!
As we get into October, we will continue
our sermon series called "LifeDates".
The whole idea of this sermon series
came to me on a day that I was feeling
overwhelmingly scattered, pulled in a
million different directions, and
uncertain of my place and purpose in
this world. Writing down the dates of
the most important events in my life
helped me to see again who I am and
who God has made, redeemed, and
sanctified me to be. As you think about
the dates for your birth, your baptism,
when you started your job or volunteer
position, important family milestones,
when you joined a local congregation,
and the most important day of your life,
it's my prayer that those dates will
speak meaning, clarity, and purpose into
your life. The most important thing I
want every hearer to understand is
specifically what God was doing on
those days. God has been and will
continue to be intimately involved in
the everyday details of your life!
Starting October 28th and taking us
through much of November, I'll be
preaching a series called "Let's Talk."
One of the questions which I am
regularly asked is how to talk to
someone else about the Lutheran
church or the Christian faith in general.
This series will present some of the
distinctives of the Christian faith and
the Lutheran church in a way that will
help you talk about your faith with
other people at work. As your pastor, I
am called by Christ to equip you for
every good work which the Holy Spirit
calls you to, and one of those main
things is speaking about your faith with
someone else. That is plain and simple
what witnessing is all about. So, in the
weeks leading up to October 28th, let
me know if there is something specific
you want to learn how to talk about.
Blessings on our life together as a
congregation as we continue to join
together around Christ's life-giving
Word!

Jesus Christ invited
children to come to him,
and at Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church so do
we. Our Sunday school
program is a great way to
help our children and
youth grow in their faith
through scripture, hands-
on act iv it ies, and
discussions. We meet
Sunday mornings from
9:45-10:30 am. Our
program is divided into three age groups:
3 years-3rd grade Family Sunday School
Kids ages 3 to 3rd grade meet in our
sanctuary with their parents. Yes, that is
right- parents are joining in the fun. We
begin our time together with live music. Next
we have a creative presentation of the Bible
event using puppets, visitors from the Bible,
and games. Finally, students break up into
their families for discussions. Parents talk
with their children about the lesson learned
and how it applies to their daily lives. Then
parents even get a discussion sheet to take
Sunday School Celina Haupt
home so they can continue
these faith conversations all
week long. It is a great
opportunity for parents and
children to grow in their
faith.
4th-5th grade with 8th
grade role models This
class uses the same Bible
story as the younger
children, but they get a
chance to dig a little
deeper. They get an
opportunity to discuss how the Bible lesson
applies to specific situations in their own
lives. Our 8th graders share their own faith
stories with the students.
6th-7th grade confirmation with high school
role models This class learns more about
growing in their faith by discovering the
Lutheran catechism.
If you haven't joined us on Sunday morning,
it is not too late! We'd love to see you
there.
Eleven small groups have now begun
meeting for the fall semester, comprised of
96 members of the congregation. The
website has been updated with information
about these new groups, so be sure to check
it out at www.goodshepherd.info.
Many Bible verses provide guidance to small
groups and are helpful to consider as we
continue to meet and strive to make our
time together as beneficial as possible.
Take some time to contemplate how these
verses may apply to your group:
Hebrews 10:24-25
And let us consider how to stir up one
another to love and good works, not
neglecting to meet together, as is the habit
of some, but encouraging one another, and
all the more as you see the Day drawing
near.
Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered in my
name, there am I among them.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build
one another up, just as you are doing.
Acts 2:42
And they devoted themselves to the
apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and the prayers.
Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens
another.
Acts 5:42
And every day, in the temple and from house
to house, they did not cease teaching and
preaching Jesus as the Christ.
May God continue to bless our time spent
together at Good Shepherd and in our small
groups!
"Faith, like light,
should always be
simple and unbending;
while love, like
warmth, should beam
forth on every side
and bend to every
necessity of our
brethren."
- Martin Luther

FELLOWSHIP
Starting in
October, we
will be looking
for volunteers
to host the
Sunday morning
fellowship hours again. Hosts will provide
cookies (home made or "store bought) or
other treats and a gallon of cold drinks
(juice, Kool-Aid, milk, etc.) for the fellowship
time between services. Please be set up
before 9:30. We ask that any treats you
bring can be served on a napkin - no
plates or utensils required. We also ask
that leftovers be taken home because
there is no place to store them. You do
not need to make the coffee. There are
limited serving plates (2), so you may wish
to bring your own. Just set out your
goodies and pour small cups of cold
drinks. That's all there is to it. Cups an
napkins are provided. Sign-up sheets are
on the bulletin board in the narthex. If you
have any questions, please contact Judy
Brookshire. Thank you for your help.

LIBRARY/ARCHIVES
When the renovations
are completed, the
library will be set up
again for checking out
books. I will hopefully
have some of our church
history archived also.
Please note that both of
these can use extra
funding! If you would
like to make a gift of
money for either of
these, make checks out
to Good Shepherd and
earmark library or
church archiving. Thank
you and hope to see you
when we resume!
Reformation
We recall the Reformation on October 31.
On that day in 1517, Martin Luther posted
his 95 Theses on a church door in
Wittenberg, Germany.
Ultimately, the following five statements
of belief became central to Protestant
Christians.
1. Scripture alone is the final authority of
Christian doctrine.
2. Christ alone is Lord and Savior.
3. God’s freely given grace is central to
salvation.
4. Sinners are justified by faith in Christ
alone.
5. God alone is worthy of all the glory.

Trinity in Athens for our
zone rally. The theme
is “Women Like Us, ” a
study of women in the
Old Testament. It will include the apron
fashion show that we used at our last
LWML Tea, so if you missed it then, you
will want to be sure to attend this rally!
The next day, Sunday, October 14, we will
celebrate the work of the LWML at both
services. Look for women in purple and
gold serving in various capacities during
the service. There will also be information
in the form of bulletin
inserts and a display.

Mark your calendars and grab some popcorn! On Sunday, September 30, the Fox Business Channel will air The Intersection of Church & State as paid programming. Viewing time will be 5 p.m. Eastern.
The Intersection of Church & State, a production of Lutheran Hour Ministries, spends a profitable hour exploring the give-and-take relationship shared by church and state in this country. Expert commentary from clergy and government officials, lawyers, educators and social service providers offer insights and depth to the historical background and ongoing fruition of this vital liaison. Viewers are reminded that though the church-state connection can be contentious at times, enormous good is accomplished when the two work together, addressing human concerns in a collaborative manner.
Program host for this election year program is the Rev. Gregory Seltz, the Speaker of The Lutheran Hour.
For more information and to find the Fox Business Channel in your area, go to www.intersectionofchurchandstate.com.

E-Team Jim Wetherton
Men’s Fraternity will be meeting
Wednesdays at 6:30 am for one hour. We
have had an excellent start on this study
with great leadership by Scott Pitsch. There
is room for more men if YOU want to
participate in study and discussion about
Christian manhood in today’s world. We’re
discussing the challenge of living in today’s
world with the foundation
we were given by our
families when growing up.
We are considering a time
change that might make it
easier for YOU to come.
Talk to Scott or to Jim
Wetherton about the
program.
Third service plans: Just a
reminder that we will
introduce a third service at
GSLC starting March 3, 2012. Much
planning is taking place. Specific times for
services and Sunday School are being
discussed. If you have input, ideas or
questions please see Jim Wetherton or
Suzy Eberle. Think and pray about the
unique blessings we can bring to the
unchurched of our community.
Greeters! Many thanks to
Joe and Nancy Ponder for
coordinating our greeter
program. This is our only
chance to make a FIRST
IMPRESSION and folks
are doing a great job.
Thanks to the many who
are in this ministry. Get in

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS! This
is the building that will include
the new youth suite! Things
are looking super different
around here and for those who
have been here longer than I
have, this must be an
awkward but exciting time. It
is never easy seeing
something so beloved being
changed to this extent. The
future is so bright though, and
all the hard work that people
have been putting in for years
and years is wonderful to see.
The youth will be doing some fun activities
in the coming months which will include
trips to the Corn maze, the Jr High Youth
Gathering, lock-ins, fundraisers and so on.
We are working on a calendar for the
parents and youth!
With this construction I
have been very pleased
with the patience,

the students. I am so

completion of the old fellowship hall will
offer new opportunities for the youth. Its
completion is set for later this year. God is
doing so many miraculous things here. And

October is Clergy Appreciation Month!
Music to a Pastor’s Ears: 1. We were just getting ready to leave for church when company came — so we brought them with us. 2. I know it looks impossible, but with God’s help we can do it. 3. Of course I’ll accept that responsibility. It will be a privilege. 4. I’m willing to help in any way I can. 5. God was really speaking to me through you during today’s service. 6. I’ll be glad to help you with visitations.

When Jesus wanted to feed the crowds of 5,000 and then
4,000 people, his disciples instantly offered excuses. It would
be too expensive. We won’t be able to get enough food. This is a
remote place. Plus, it’s too late.
But Jesus didn’t address any
of those excuses. All he
asked, in both instances, was
“How many loaves do you
have?” Then he miraculously
satisfied everyone’s hunger,
with leftovers to boot.
Jesus doesn’t want our
excuses, either. All he wants
is us — and what we already have. Watch in amazement as God
blesses that and uses it mightily.

News from the Flock
It was good to see Josh Weisensel in
church recently while he was home on
leave. Now he is back in Afghanistan
serving our country. Let's continue to
keep him in our thoughts and
prayers. How about sending him a
card or note so he will be assured we
at Good Shepherd are holding him
close in our hearts and are grateful for
his service. (Postage is the regular US
domestic rate). His address:
Nancy Thiessen was honored with a surprise retirement tea at the home of Mary Lou Berghel. Fellow nurses, Lili Smith and Luanne Haupt hosted the tea.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU – JIM AND LISA WETHERTON
Although having grown-up on other versions of the Holy Bible, Jim and
Lisa today “like the everyday language” of The Message (1993-2002)
by Eugene H. Peterson.
James Drane Wetherton, the third child of Bill Wetherton and his wife,
Itsy nee Eisenbeis, was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 29,
1949. His father was the owner of Wetherton Tile and Mantel, and his
mother was the office manager. Jim was baptized on September 11,
1949, by The Rev. Shepphard Mussen at St. Thomas Episcopal Church
in Louisville. His baptismal sponsors were Capt. Sam Jordan, Mrs. Vaughn Anderson, and Mr. and Mrs.
William Wetherton. On January 29, 1961, Jim was presented by The Rev. Shepphard Mussen and
confirmed by Bishop Gresham Marmion. His confirmation sponsors were Sandy and Virginia Wood. His
older sister, Lynne Schulz, a retired teacher, still attends this church. His older brother, Bill Wetherton, Jr., a
Presbyterian, is a mechanical engineer in Louisville. Although his parents are deceased, the family
remains very close, and he has “bunches of nieces and nephews.”
Jim attended Louisville’s Lyndon Elementary School and (Grades 7-12) Westport Middle and High School
(Class of 1967). Sociology was his favorite subject. He was a member of National Honor Society and
president of the Student Council. He played clarinet in the band and earned the Boy Scout God and
Country Award. Although there were only two in his church youth group, he was President of Youth for the
Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky.
He worked full-time while a sociology major at the University of Louisville. Among his employments were
Junior Achievement, University of Louisville Night School, and the YMCA. From 1971–1976 he was
Executive Director of the Kentucky Youth Conference, an organization to encourage young people to be
involved in their communities. Jim declared, “Much was accomplished. The 70’s was a challenging time.
The kids did it. We provided the direction and guidance.” Specializing in sales, he joined Nationwide Fund
Raisers in Louisville in 1976 and was transferred to Atlanta to be its corporate trainer in 1980.
On July 2, 1981, at Apostles Lutheran Church (LCA) in Atlanta, he married Carole Anne Brooks (b. July 14 –
“southern women don’t give the year they were born”). The Rev. Vernon Luckey performed the ceremony.
Together Jim and Carole raised their four children from previous marriages: Keith Beverly, now 45; James
Wetherton, Jr. (Jamie), now 39; Bryan Wetherton, now 35; and Kim Beverly.
In 1983, while still corporate trainer, he moved to Gainesville and lived on Lake Lanier. Carole was
baptized and Jim and Carole were confirmed by The Rev. Rodney Pasch at Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church on June 24, 1984. Carole’s son, Keith Beverly, was also baptized that day. Jim taught the High
School Sunday School class, was Sunday School Superintendent, and, along with his wife, led the youth
group. Pastor Pasch confirmed Jim’s step-son, Keith Beverly, on December 1, 1985, and his son, Jamie
Wetherton, on May 18, 1986.
In 1986 Jim sold advertising and was a manufacturer’s representative for a number of different
companies. He retired in 2000.
Jim served on the 1991 call committee which brought The Rev. William Womer to Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church and served as Pastor Womer’s head elder. Jim and Carole moved to Sautee in 1998. In
2003, Carole and her daughter, Kim, were called to their Heavenly Father while on a hiking trip in Utah.
Their Memorial Service was held at Faith Lutheran Church (ELCA).
On October 21, 2005, Jim and Lisa were married at the church where they met, Faith Lutheran Church on
Highway 115 near Cleveland.

Mary Elisa Gruber, the daughter of Martin Gruber and his wife, Dorrie Gruber, nee Dechman, was born on
September 14, 1952, in Augusta. Her family is described as “very German and very Lutheran.” Her father,
the recipient of two Purple Hearts, one Bronze Star, and one Silver Star, was an Army medic who served in
Korea and was Director of Weights for Associated Railroad Bureau. Her mother later worked for the
Internal Revenue Service. Lisa is the oldest of five children - four girls and one boy.
On November 9, 1952, Lisa was baptized by Dr. John Brokhoff at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (LCA)
in Atlanta. Her baptismal sponsors were Doris Averitt, Henry Taylor, and her parents. She was confirmed
on May 14, 1967, by The Rev. Karl Suhr at Saint Matthew Lutheran Church (LCA) in Atlanta. (Saint
Matthew Lutheran Church and Saint Michael Lutheran Church merged in 2004 to form Living Grace
Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Tucker.)
Lisa attended Skyland Elementary School (K-7) and Cross Keys High School (8-12) and graduated in the
Class of 1970. Her favorite subjects were English and History. She was an alto in the Honor Chorale and
participated in the Drama Club and Jr. Civitan. Following graduation, she attended Georgia State
University while working full-time at the National Bank of Georgia. Her work in banks led her to the
insurance industry, where she has been a professional for over thirty years. Lisa joined Thrivent Financial
as a Financial Representative six months ago and says that she LOVES THRIVENT and calls her
employment “one of my gifts from God.” Lisa has two sons: Alan Wilkins, age 29, and Matthew Hellman,
age 21.
Jim, Lisa, and her son, Matthew, became members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on December 15,
2010. Lisa is chairman of the Public Relations Committee for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and is its
web site manager. She sings soprano in the choir. Jim sings bass in the choir, is the Evangelism
Chairman, and is responsible for the third service. Jim and Lisa have four “rescue dogs”: “Shadow,”
“Zippy,” “Chessie,” and “Goldie.” They will be moving back to Sautee this month.
Jim’s favorite Bible verse is Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man shall boast.” (KJV) Jim proudly says, “I grew up
with the King James Version, but today I like the ‘every day language’ of The Message by Eugene
Peterson.” Jim says, “My favorite hymn varies according to the season of my life.” His favorite hymn today
is “Ode to Joy,” (“Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” - 1907). The text was written by Henry van Dyke (1852 –
1933), American author, Presbyterian clergyman, and professor of English Literature at Princeton
University. The hymn is based on Psalms 71:23 – “My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto
Thee….” (KJV) The author said, “The Berkshires were my inspiration.” The musical setting is the final
movement of the Ninth Symphony (1824) by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
Lisa’s favorite Bible passage is Galatians 6:10 - “Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us
work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.” (The Message).
Her favorite hymn is “Beautiful Savior,” based on Psalm 45:2 - “Thou art fairer than the children of men:
grace is poured into Thy lips: therefore God hath blessed Thee forever.” (KJV) The hymn was published in
the “Munsterisch Gesangbuch” Munster, 1677. The author is unknown. The musical setting is
“Schlesische Volkslieder,” Leipzig, 1842.
Jim and Lisa, may the Lord bless your ministry at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and may God’s love
and joy continue to abound in your hearts forever.

Sermons Around Us William Shakespeare wrote of times when "our
life … finds tongues in trees, books in the running
brooks, sermons in stones and good in
everything."
The month of October can preach breathtaking
sermons. It speaks in the glorious colors of
leaves, the splendor of the abundant harvest, the
grass whitened by the first frost, the honking
birds flying to their winter haven and busy
squirrels gathering
nuts before snow
c o v e r s t he i r
feeding ground.
How wonderful
O c t o b e r ' s
sermons are, and
how they bless us.
Thank you, Lord! 2012
