I was so very relieved when the results came back “negative” for the virus. My symptoms have disappeared and so it appears that it was a bug of another sort, thankfully. I am slowly regaining my energy and I am feeling better every day. You will agree this Christmas has been the most different one we have ever celebrated in our lives. This pandemic continues to dictate how we live our lives and cause us to celebrate in different ways. I trust that you and your families were able to celebrate in a safe but happy way. With the rollout of the vaccine underway our prayers go out to all those who are charged with its efficient and speedy delivery. It is hoped that the lockdown that we are all living under will be lifted at the end of the month. This will only be possible if the numbers of cases go down and the hospitals are not overtaxed. It is important that we all follow the Public Health Guidelines so that we remain ready to receive the vaccine when it applies to us. Until the lockdown is lifted, our church remains closed to regular Masses and all parish activities. I want to thank all those who continue to make our online Mass possible. This is our one important gathering a week and I encourage and invite you all to please join your parish family online every Sunday at 10am. Thank you all for your kind wishes at Christmas and also for the many prayers and well wishes for my health. It is sincerely appreciated. Please pray for one another as we know the well-being of our parishioners is so very important during these days of lockdown. I hold you and your families in my prayers, and I ask you to continue to pray for me. As we enter 2021, let us ask our Lord to light the days of this new year with faith, hope and love. Together, in faith, we will get through these difficult and challenging days. God bless you. Yours in Christ, Fr. Virgil

Dear friends and parishioners of The Good Shepherd Parish –

Recently, as many of you are aware, I became ill and decided the symptoms meant that I should have a COVID test.

    Yours in Christ,

    Fr. Virgil

News from the Knights of Columbus Council 9005 Good Shepherd Parish

    Christmas Hampers

The Book of Sirach (7:3) says "Stretch forth your hands to the poor". On Friday Dec 18th this is what the Knights (Council 9005) literally did. We did this under the leadership of Br. Shane Silva and aided by Br. Ian Willey who did an excellent organizational job. Councillor Laura Dudas gave a helping hand. She has always participated in the Christmas Hamper Programme and well before she ever thought of entering politics. The Knights welcome her presence. This year we distributed around 35 food hampers. We gave vouchers instead of the usual physical food parcels. This was because of the COVID pandemic. Br. Shane Silva hopped up on the tailgate of his truck and gave instructions just as Jesus gave instructions before He sent the disciples out. Also, we went in two's just as Jesus sent them out in two's.

Christmas is a time of self-giving. We all suffer from the effects of original sin and sin is selfishness and thus we become self-centred. Therefore St. Paul recommends that we empty ourselves of selfishness. We do this through self-giving. We are made for others and we are "our brothers’ keeper". There is a koinonia (sharing) in all things. And so we feed the less fortunate and thus experience the joy and peace of Christ which is unsurpassed.

Finally, we welcome Patrick MacCarthy to our Council. He is a university student at the University of Guelph. He is 21 years old and a longtime parishioner of GSP. In ministry, age does not count. The prophet Jeremiah was a young man (under 20). God spoke through Jeremiah. The prophet Isaiah was an old man, yet God spoke through him. We look forward to meeting Patrick and oh by the way, his father John MacCarthy, is also a Knight.

"The Lord hears the cry of the poor.” We hope that these words of the Psalmist ring through this Christmas.
