The Good Shepherd Gazette Good Shepherd Catholic Academy, Brooklyn NY + Thursday, May 26, 2016 + Volume I, Issue 3 __________________________________________________________________________________________ May Crowning By: Elizabeth Careaga As the month of May, a month dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is coming to a close, Good Shepherd Catholic Academy came together as a parish outside Good Shepherd Church to honor Mary with a traditional and lovely “May Crowning.” Prior to crowning the statue of Mary, vocal sang several harmonious songs and Mrs. DeNonno, whose name is Mary, read before Fr. Doyle said a prayer for the students and a blessing regarding the representation of Mary and the month of May. After that, 8th grader Julia Gnad, whose confirmation name is Mary, did the honors of crowning the statue of Mary. Although this ritual was quite unadorned, the serene atmosphere, not to mention the exquisite trees and tulips, made this May Crowning very delightful. This ceremony felt like a treasurable memory to me, as this was my last May Crowning with Good Shepherd.

May   Crowning  By:   Elizabeth   Careaga

As   the   month   of   May,   a   month dedicated   to   the   Virgin   Mary,   is coming   to   a   close,   Good Shepherd   Catholic   Academy came   together   as   a   parish   outside Good   Shepherd   Church   to   honor Mary   with   a   traditional   and   lovely “May   Crowning.”

Prior   to   crowning   the   statue   of Mary,   vocal   sang   several harmonious   songs   and   Mrs. DeNonno,   whose   name   is   Mary, read   before   Fr.   Doyle   said   a prayer   for   the   students   and   a blessing   regarding   the representation   of   Mary   and

the   month   of   May.

Memorial   Day    By   Ava   Pontone

Memorial   Day   is   called   the unofficial   start   of   Summer.   It   is   a three   day   weekend   that   is celebrated   on   the   last   Monday   of May.   People   usually   have   family get   togethers,   barbecues,   and   go down   to   the   beach.   But,   Memorial Day   is   really   supposed   to   be   for

the   men   and   women   who   have passed   away   in   all   of   the   wars.

The   holiday   began   on   May   30, 1868,   when   the   Union   General John   A.   Logan   created   a   day   to   let families   decorate   the   graves   of Civil   War   soldiers.   They   first named   the   day   Decoration   Day but   years   later   it   was   changed   to Memorial   Day.   President   Richard Nixon   made   Memorial   Day   a federal   holiday   in   1971.   On   Memorial   Day,   it   is   a   tradition to   visit   war   monuments.   The President   and   Vice   President   lay a   wreath   on   soldiers   graves   at Arlington   National   Cemetery.   Most towns   have   big   Memorial   Day celebration.While   every   ones having   barbecues   or   having   fun   at the   beach   I   think   that   we   should celebrate   Memorial   Day   in   a   way that   honors   our   nation’s   heroes.

Memorial   Day By   Brooke   Polito   and   Diana   Wilen  Memorial   Day   is   May   30th   and   is also   known   as   Decoration   Day. Memorial   Day   is   meant   to   honor the   soldiers   of   the   Union   and Confederate   armies   who   died during   the   American   Civil   War.

Our Upcoming Graduation By Julia Gnad

As June quickly approaches us, our 8th grade students are getting prepared to graduate. The Graduation Mass takes place on June 17th, as well as a brunch at Buckley’s, and finally the Graduation that takes place in the Church at 5:00. Although these events themselves are very exciting, the 8th grade is also looking forward for two other events that were planned for them.   First, on June 10th the students will enjoy a Graduation Dance in the academy's auditorium. They will first enjoy hors d’oeuvres with their parents. Then, they will eat dinner, and finally, be able to dance with their friends. The 8th grade recently took a vote to decide if the theme of the dance would be Candy Land , or A Night Under The Stars . I'm happy to conclude that A Night Under The Stars will be the theme of the dance. The 8th grade will also be going on a class trip as another way to celebrate their graduation. This class trip will be on June 15th to see the musical Wicked on Broadway. This musical is an alternative ending of the well-known movies The Wizard of Oz and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. After the musical, the 8th grade

will return to the academy, and eat dinner in the Good Shepherd Rectory.  As an 8th grader I am definitely looking forward to June, and all the comes with it. My friends and I are very excited to get to enjoy time together and dance and our Graduation Dance. We are also looking forward to see Wicked, which will be another great opportunity to spend time together before we go our separate ways to different high schools.

The NFL Draft  By Thomas O’Neill

The NFL Draft started on April 30,2016 and ended on May 2,2016. The first pick of the draft was Jared Goff (QB) from California. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams. The next pick was by the Philadelphia Eagles. They picked another QB Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State. For all you New York Giants fans the Giants selected cornerback Eli Apple in the first round out of Ohio State. In the first round the New York Jets selected linebacker Darron Lee out of Ohio State. Actually Ohio State had five players taken in the first round. I hoped you enjoyed this article.

A Concert to Remember By Alexandria Salvato

Last night on Monday April 25, 2016, my dad and I went to a Bruce Springsteen concert. We took the train to get there. I was so excited for tonight. Before the concert, we got a poster and popcorn with a bottle of water. It started at 8:00 and ended 12:00 at night. He sang about 45 songs. Bruce said this was the last concert that he would sing the whole album called “The River”. He took a girl in the crowd and she sang “Blinded by the light”. Before she got off stage, he signed her poster. Then a few songs later, he did a crowd surf. There is a very famous singer named Prince. He passed away last week. Bruce sang Prince’s most popular song, “Purple Rain”! His awesome guitarist Nils Lafgren, did an awesome job. He said that he will spend the summer performing in Europe. The next day, I actually went to school! It was a concert to remember.   Jokes   by   Alessandra   DePaulis

Our Very Own

Literary Legends  All   Alone  By:   Taylor   ColeHector   &   Elizabeth OliveriDisalvio  Chapter 6: Taken Away  “I got you now,” said Tyler. Taylor and Lizze screamed for help knowing nobody was coming. Tyler then brought us to his lair and tied us up in a chair.  Chapter 7: Kidnapped  Once Tyler tied us up he decided to lock us up in a cage with a tiger. A few hours later we woke up and heard growling. Then Lizzie screamed, thinking we were about to get eaten by a tiger! Lizzie took a bat and tried to hit the tiger with it. Tyler told us to find his key that he had lost in his garden. Taylor and Lizzie couldn‛t find his key.   Chapter 8: Lost  Tyler was very mad. He locked us up with two more tigers! Then the three tigers jumped on us. Lizzie and Taylor screamed, “Are we going to be eaten alive?!”  Could this be the end of us?  To be concluded…

I Saw Jesus Last Night By Reagan Murphy and Alessia Forte  Chapter 1: Bad News  One day I was praying in my bed. I woke up and I went outside. Outside were people who did not look so nice. They were holding a needle that looked like a doctor’s needle. I took a picture of it with my phone and I looked it up. That was not good news. I figured out it was a hypodermic needle. My mom wasn’t home so I called the cops. Right at that time I heard a knock on the door. I didn’t answer the door.  Chapter 2: The Coming  Boom! The door was knocked down. I was hiding in the corner. Then I took my phone off my bed. I called my mom but she didn’t answer. The guy said to me, “come here.” I screamed, “No!” I said to him, why would you risk your life, you are hurting yourself and others.   He shot me with the needle.   My mom came home twenty minutes later. “Mom,” I screamed. “I feel like nothing, my throat is clogged.” I can’t breathe.”

Chapter 3: The Hospital  My mom rushed me to the hospital. The doctors were worried I wasn’t going to make it. All of a sudden, in the middle of the night, I felt very different. I was a spirit!  Chapter 4: Heaven  Once I was in heaven, I felt great. I had never felt like this before. I told God, “I don’t want to leave unless I am better.” God didn’t answer but I knew what he was saying. I heard things I never heard before and I saw things but I did hear my family. I jumped out of bed and ran to my mom and hugged her so tight. I knew I was better.
