According to ancient legend, the beginning of Lunar New Year started with a fight between villagers and a mythical sea beast called the ‘Nian’ (Chinese word for ‘Year’). Now, this might not be fact, but as the ‘Year’ inhabited the sea, we’re pretty certain one of his favourite dishes was lobster – need we say more? Introducing Lobster in Black Bean Sauce.

Enjoy this Lunar New Year.

Introducing the new Chair of the Veterans Centre, Brigadier Michael Griffin, AM

In October 2017, Mr John McInerney, OAM, Chair of the Veterans Centre handed over leadership of the Centre to Brig. Michael Griffin, AM. “I am extremely grateful to John for his vision and hard work.”

As a founding member of the Centre and then also serving a tenure as Chair, John led his team to answer a need of current Defence Force members, ex-service members and their families. John will continue assisting ex-service families through his work with Legacy.

The Centre has been operating from Level 4 of Dee Why RSL for the past three years and provides a holistic model of care to current and ex-service men, women and their families. This means providing one service, compensation and welfare support, and referring all other means of assistance to partner organisations.

This approach has led to an increasing demand for services and unfortunately, the demand is too great, with calls for assistance being triaged onto a wait list. To improve this situation, the Centre relies on donations from the public to provide these needed services by a paid and volunteer workforce. Ben Webb, Centre Manager states that the Centre is “unfortunately seeing an increase of clients in crisis, at risk, or who have attempted suicide.”

The Centre has not been idle in the face of this growing demand and severity of clients needs. Ben continues to describe that, “the Centre has a number of major projects finishing in the first half of 2018 which will greatly add to the capabilities and capacity of the Centre, ultimately providing a better service to clients.” Michael will bring a wealth of experience to the Centre. Serving as a soldier for 42 years, Michael is currently serving as a Brigadier in the Army Reserve and has been awarded the Member of the Order of Australia “for services to the law.” In addition to this, Michael is also the Agency Head of the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity. “My key objective for my tenure is to continue to build and maintain the reputation of the Centre as a trusted source of advice and support to the veteran community,”

COMMUNITY

Fighting Chance Builds a New Future for Disability

Dee Why RSL is very proud to assist local community group Fighting Chance, who are based in Frenchs Forest. Fighting Chance design, build and scale social enterprises - creating increased work opportunities for Australians with disability and their families, and are now supporting 180 people in our local area.

Dee Why RSL has specifically helped one of Fighting Chance’s expanding social enterprises: Avenue within the Northern Beaches. Avenue was established under the firm belief that all people can meaningfully contribute their skills and talents to society, and that people with profound and severe disability are no exception.

Club President Graeme Liddell and Executive Manager, Community Sheila Malone recently visited Fighting Chance to appreciate first-hand all that they do.

Avenue imports a range of giftware products, handmade by artisans from around the world, and sells them to the Australian consumer through local markets, an e-commerce website and local wholesale. This commercial activity creates economic participation opportunities for a team of people with significant disabilities, who manage the importing, sales and distribution, marketing and promotion of the ethically sourced products. Avenue offers each person their first, and potentially only, opportunity to utilise their skills within a work setting.

Fighting Chance was set up by siblings Laura and Jordan O’Reilly, who grew up at the side of a younger brother, Shane, who had profound cerebral palsy. As Shane entered his late teens and began to look for meaningful post-school options, it became increasingly clear that his opportunities were extremely limited. Shane would never enter employment, despite being highly intelligent. Instead, he was likely to find himself in a day program which, while offering amusement and the occupation of his time, offered nothing in the way of personal development, growth, utility of his skills, or the provision of a sense of purpose in society.

Partnerships Executive Alex Carpenter stated; “Our mission is to ask ‘What if?’ - to see the world as it isn’t yet, to imagine a future quite different to the present; and then to make it happen. Through the creation of innovative social businesses, Fighting Chance provides opportunities for meaningful social participation, employment, work experience and skill development to young people with the most significant disability in our community.”

When you think of Thailand, one of the first things you probably think of is the food… and maybe the amazing beaches, rich culture, and incredible shopping, but the food is almost certainly up there. Easy enough to understand given that Thai food is one of the most popular and tastiest of worldly cuisines, appearing in 2017’s ‘Worlds 50 Most Delicious Foods List’ seven times! Lucky for you, we’re offering arguably the best kings of curries.
