SAFEGUARDING - EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS – GS PARISH AUDIT Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - Fr Larkin uses the online Update Service. Subscribing to this service reduces the need to apply for multiple Certificates when you move from one sector to another in the same workforce or when a recheck is required. This is annually checked. Fr Larkin's DBS certificate is dated 21/09/2018 Enhanced and will be submitted again in September 2019. The diocese of Leeds recommends that DBS certificates are renewed every 3 years. I have been in contact with the safeguarding team based at Hinsley Hall, Headingley Lane Leeds. The Safeguarding Administrator – Joanne Mitchell has kindly emailed the DBS list for the parish. All the Eucharistic ministers listed will need to renew their certificates with the DBS. If you have used the online service which has been available since June 2012 or have renewed your certificate (through a school when working there) please email the following so I can record the details to: [email protected]

Application Number

Certificate Number

Certificate issue date and

Level of check. Good practice for parishes is that all DBS applications etc are conducted through the Diocesan office at Leeds. In the light of this and our commitment to safeguarding, Eucharistic Ministers agreed at their most recent meeting that Eucharistic ministers would stand down until the DBS was renewed. To facilitate the renewal process, I will contact the safeguarding team next week and see if they can help us achieve this important exercise and help our safeguarding representative. The next area to be examined will be the children's liturgy. This is a positive sign that we are committed to doing the right thing. There will be no Eucharistic ministers at Mass until the renewal of DBS certificates. Thank you for your support in this important matter. Fr Larkin

MARY’S MEALS - LUNCHEON CLUB DONATION – RESPONSE FROM JOHN GIBSON (GS PARISHIONER)

A huge thank you to the Luncheon Club for the donation to Mary’s Meals!

Having recently taken up a role as a Community Ambassador for Mary’s Meals I was

both surprised and delighted by the donation of £500. Also so pleased that it was

doubled up under the UK Government scheme so that Mary’s Meals will receive £1000!

Mary’s Meals is currently active in something like 18 countries in places including

Malawi, Haiti, and Liberia.

Mary’s Meals exists to provide at least one meal every day for children in the poorest of

situations in their place of education and guarantees that at least 93% or more of

donations will go directly to feed and educate those children.

By my calculations based on current information a donation of £1000 will feed and

give access to education for around 70 children for one year!

Happy to help provide further information on the work of Mary’s Meals.

Thanks to everyone at The Good Shepherd. Well done! John Gibson

CAR PARK Another vehicle has been broken into in the church car park. Several vehicles have been targeted by thieves. This time the theft happened between Sunday afternoon and Monday. Please be aware thieves are continuing to target our car park, especially if the vehicle is left over night.

LENTEN CONFESSIONS (SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION) Saturdays, 10.30 – 11.00am They say the biggest mistakes we make in life are the ones we make with our eyes wide open—the ones where we know what we are doing, and decide to do it anyway. I would like to invite you to the sacrament of reconciliation - an opportunity for individual confession on Saturdays during Lent at 10.30 - 11.00am except Saturday of Holy Week. But don’t let nerves hold you back. However long it has been, however bad the sin, however embarrassed you feel – don’t let anything stop you from going to confession. Remember that it is the Lord we meet in confession. Christ touches our life through each sacrament. Every priest will keep your confession absolutely secret for the rest of his life.

SAFEGUARDING IN THE GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH Posters with details of contacts regarding Safeguarding issues are now in the following places: church entrance, toilets, upstairs classrooms. If you feel that there are any other place that we need to cover please let Gez Hodgson know – further copies are available. Gez Hodgson

At this stage I would particularly like to draw your attention to a dedicated website recently launched by the European Commission: www.eurights.uk
