RECENT FLOODS On Sunday morning (9 February) after a long night of torrential rainfall which caused the Calder to swell to 16ft – higher than the previous record, the valley suffered flooding similar to 2015. Thankfully, we were spared this time. Please keep in your prayers all those who have been flooded; 500 homes and 400 businesses in the valley. My sincere thanks to all those who helped on Sunday morning and turned up on Monday to help clear the mud & silt left behind. It was hearting to see helpers arrive again Saturday 14 Feb - ready to fill sandbags and prepare for the next storm. The parish will be making a significant donation of £1000 to the appropriate flood relief fund in due course.

CAFOD FAST DAY FRIDAY 6 MARCH

On Friday 6 March , will you eat a simple meal in solidarity and give what you save to help people in the developing world. More details later. Bernadette Gibson

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER SERVICE

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide, ecumenical, women-led movement. This year’s annual service will be held on Friday 6 March at St Michael’s Church, Mytholmroyd. It has been written by women of Zimbabwe and gives insights into their lives. At a time of fragmentation and social unrest in the world, we have this opportunity to join with others from our neighbouring churches and Christians across the world, in prayer, music and reflection on the theme of justice and reconciliation. The service is open to all, so we do hope you can join us at 1pm on March 6th when refreshments will be served before the service, which begins at 1.30pm. Cathy Duffy and Anne Plunkett

MARY’S MEALS UPDATE Some exciting and some not so exciting (but still amazing) news.

We are now feeding every school day 1,667,067 children! This rise of 160,000 more children is only possible because of your support, thank you very much on behalf of all these children!! Unfortunately, the rising cost of food means that the average amount it costs to feed a child for a whole school year has now risen to £15.90 per child (or roughly 8p per meal).

We will try to encourage some fund raising activities again this year. New ideas are always welcome so don’t hesitate with any suggestions.

DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING.

(A little late but valuable nonetheless - this was on 8 February)

"The Lord has loved me so much: we must love everyone ... we must be compassionate!"

[St Josephine Bakhita]

Human trafficking and modern slavery are happening in every corner of the globe. Given its hidden nature, it's nearly impossible to understand its full scope and scale. The ILO (International Labour Organisation) in 2016 estimated that at any given time:

40.3 million people worldwide were in modern slavery, including 24.9 million in forced labour and 15.4 million people in forced marriage. 70% of these were women and girls.

This equated to 5.4 victims of modern slavery for every 1,000 people in the world.

1 in 4 victims are children.

Of the 24.9 million victims of forced labour, 16 million were exploited in the private sector including domestic work, construction or agriculture. 4.8 million people were victims of forced sexual exploitation, and 4 million people were in forced labour imposed by the state.

Women and children account for 99% of victims in the commercial sex industry, and 58% in other sectors of forced labour.

In 2018 in the UK, 6,993 potential victims were submitted to the National Referral Mechanism - a 36% increase on 2017. If you suspect human trafficking, call the police on 999 (if an emergency), or 101 (if not urgent). If you'd prefer to stay anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. if you don't want to call the police, you can talk to a charity anonymously, eg: Modern Slavery Helpline 08000 121 700; Medaille Trust, Tel: 0800 06 999 16.

FEASTS OF THE WEEK

Saint Peter Damian

He was born at Ravenna, Italy, in 1007. Peter became a

hermit before taking part in a great reform of the

Church. In 1057 he was made bishop of Ostia, and on his

death in 1072 was immediately venerated as a saint.

The Chair of Saint Peter, the Apostle,

This day recalls the ministry conferred by Christ on

the Prince of the Apostles and continued in an

unbroken line down to the present Pope.

It is an opportunity for the People of God to renew

their communion with the Pope.
