The Golden Cipher
August 12, 2019
Greetings fellow members of the Piedmont NC Chapter of the AGO. I am
delighted to serve as your dean for another term. I’m excited about our team
of officers this year. Thank you to those of you who supported the slate and
entrusted us with this responsibility on your behalf.
I am looking forward to a fine year ahead and hope many of you can come to
the first luncheon and meeting on September 14, 11:30-2pm, at St. Paul’s in
Winston-Salem. Our North Carolina District Convener, Justin Smith, will be with
us to install our officers and we look forward to our own Dan Locklair’s
presentation on the 30th anniversary of his Rubrics and a newly commissioned
work as well. Wayne Leupold will have an excellent display from his archives of
the manuscripts of Rubics at Dan’s request.
The fellowship and professional support we receive from each other is very
important to me and I want to help encourage it among all of us. Our chapter
is large, now stretching from Burlington on the east side to Clemmons on the
west. We also have members as far north as Danville, VA and Southern Pines to the south. Our love and support of the
organ and music for religious institutions is a great contribution to our communities that we together can sustain and
increase year to year. Please mark your calendars and come to our meetings so we may have the fellowship and
inspiration which enables us to continue this important contribution.
See you soon!

The Piedmont NC Chapter of the AGO is sponsoring a workshop for piano students, elementary through high school. Participants will learn about the organ, its history, repertoire, and mechanical aspects. Students will have opportunity to explore the inner-workings of the organ and to sit at the console and try out piano pieces they already play. Some students may choose to participate in an informal recital at the end of the day. Leading the class are Dr. André Lash, Lecturer of Organ at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and Dr. Timothy Olsen, Kenan Professor of Organ at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Associate Professor of Organ at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Students will work with these teachers in small groups and individually during the course of the event. All levels of experience are welcome, beginning through advanced students. The event is free and lunch is provided. Prospective students may register online.

The Diapason has called Dan Locklair’s Rubrics “one of the most frequently played organ works by an American composer.” Commissioned by the Organ Artists Series of Pittsburgh and premiered in 1989, Rubrics celebrates its 30th anniversary this season. The roots of the piece are at St. Paul’s! Come hear why and how tiny words in The Book of Common Prayer helped create a composition performed the world over!
