The era of the Gupta dynasty came to be known as the 'Golden age of Indian culture' because this period produced some brilliant works in the �eld of architecture, sculpture, and painting.

The famous Ajanta caves are a cluster of 48 caves �lled with Buddhist sculptures and wall paintings that depict the various stages of the Buddha's life, which were pro-duced during the rule of this dynasty.

The Golden Age also saw the creation of multiple gor-geous Hindu temples all over the subcontinent. Poetry also �ourished during this time and produced one of India's greatest poets, Kalidasa.

Another area which has left historians amazed is the detailed metal-work of the period. Copper statues of the Buddha are a common motif. Further proof of the exquisite craftsman-ship of the time is the iron pillar in Delhi.

Buddhism had opened up links between India and the rest of the world and many Chinese missionaries came to India to pay their respect at sacred places.

Signi�cant achievements were made in the �eld of music, education, mathematics, Sanskrit literature and drama. Some of the literature written in Sanskrit spread all the way to Persia, Egypt and Greece and became the basis for many Islamic literary works such as 'Ali Baba and The Forty Thieves'.

There were great advancements in science and mathematics. Aryabhatta introduced the nu-meral system which is used world over even today. The deci-mal system too, was an inven-tion of this period.

There were major discoveries and advancements in the �eld of medicine in this period. Several herbal remedies were discov-ered to treat a variety of illnesses. Even a primitive form of plastic surgery was developed for the treatment of injuries to the face.

After approximately 330 years, the Gupta dynasty was brought down with the Han invasions in the northwest. Although the Guptas resisted invaders, it was only a matter of time before the kingdom fell. The last of the Guptas perished but their achievements were well docu-mented and passed on to other cultures and live on even today.
