    The revered lateBr. SriGhandikota Subrahmanya Sstrywas a

    greatdoyenofVediclearningandculture.Hewasagreatdevotee

    of Bhagavn Sr Sathya Sai Baba.During his last days spent in

    close proximity to Baba in Prashnti Nilayam, he was a daily

    recipientofBabasDivineGrace.Hepassedaway inpeacewith

    Babas name on his lips and in the arms of his eldest son, Sri

    GhandikotaV.SubbaRao,inPrashntiNilayam,onthefirstday

    ofDasara,1986.

    years

    as

    the

    standing

    Court Scholar of the kingdom of Vizianagaram, in northern

    ndhra Pradesh.Hewas honouredwithmany titles, including

    SahithyaRathna,AbhinavaVidhyranya,etc.HewasaversatileVedic

    scholar,agoodspeaker,writer,authorandpoet inSanskrith;he

    wasanauthorityonVedicinterpretation,onDharmaShsthra,and

    onsacredrituallore.HewasafoundingmemberofthePrashnti

    Vidhvan Mah Sabha Academy of Scholars, founded by

    Bhagavn. Sri Sstry was invited by Baba to supervise the

    performance of many Dhashara Yagnyas held in Prashnti

    Nilayam. The revered Sastry was the revealer of the holy Sr

    Sathya Sai Gyathr Mantra; he was called a Rishi or Sage by

    BhagavnBaba.

    He received thegraceof inspirationofBhagavnBaba to reveal

    the Sai Gyathr Mantra in His Divine presence inWhitefield,Bangalore, onDecember 24th 1977, at the holy evening time of

    ChristmasEve.

    The Sai shvara Gyathr, now chantedbymillions all over the

    world,readsasfollows:

    TheoutstandingfeaturesofthelifeofthisgreatVedicscholarand

    savantareasfollows:

    He loved, cared for and served his father, a great VedicPandit,andmotherallthroughtheiroldage;heconsidered

    themonparwiththeDivine. HewasagreatvotaryofVedaMtha, theMotherVeda,dedicating a good part of his life to imbibing and

    imparting the knowledge, culture and practice of

    SnathanaDharma,theuniversalandeternalreligion.

    True to the Vedic way of living, as Baba remarked, hededicatedthefirstthirdofhislifetoVedicKarmaKnda,the

    the

    was spent in Vedic meditations, Upsana; and the

    A great traditional Vedic Scholar and poet, Sr Sstrywas open

    hearted anddevelopeddeep faith and conviction thatBaba is a

    DivineAdventofgreatpower,andanepitomyofDivineLove.He

    came to this conclusion through various criteria for an avathr,

    laid down in the scriptures, that Baba, as Shiva Shakthi, is the

    embodimentofalldivinities,SarvaDevat Svarupa.

    In the age of Kali, unrighteousness (Adharma) rules over

    righteousness (Dharma), untruth (Asatya) over truth (Sathyam),

    thugsoverkings (rulers),andwomenovermen. TheParashara

    scripture declares that in the Kali Yuga sacrificial actions and

    worshipof

    the

    teacher

    will

    become

    extia:

    Wheneverthereisafallinthenumberofsaintlypersonsadhering

    totheVedicpath,wheneverpeopleloseinterestintheVedicpath,

    and there are fewer followers of the Vedic path, whenever

    compassion rises in agnostics, thenwe have tounderstand that

    Kaliisintheascendancy.

    In the days of yore, maharshis (sages) could see through their

    divinevisionhowpeoplewouldconductthemselvesintheageofKali, and elaborated the same in the scriptures. In the light of

    great calamity caused by the decline of good traditions and

    actionsandrighteousbehaviour,there isaneedfortheSupreme

    Lord, Parameshvara,who is full of compassion, to incarnate in

    this world in order to uplift the people from the sorrows of

    samsara(transmigratory life). Infact,Hevowedtoappearfrom

    timetotimewheneverthereisdeclineinthepracticeofDharma.In the past too, whenever serious calamities in the form of

    deteriorationofhumanvaluesandrighteousbehaviouroccurred

    in thisworld,He appeared in the forms ofRaama andKrishna

    andreestablishedrighteousnessinthisworld.

    Parameshvara, in the beginning, incarnated as Brahma and

    created thisworld. Later,whenever righteousness suffered,He

    descendedto

    Rama

    Krishna,

    energyintothisworld,declaretheVedas.

    It is well known that Swami materializes golden armlets and

    severalotherdecorativeobjectsofvalueforlearnedscholars;and

    also createsnine typesofgems (navarathnas)on the finaldayof

    offeringpuurnaahuthiduringtheweeklongVedaPurushaYagna

    everyyear.

    Baba

    produces

    tons

    of

    fragrant

    sacred

    ash

    mixed

    with

    severaldivine ingredients forperforming abhisheka (sacredbath)

    to the idol of Shirdi Baba,who is no other than Parama Shiva

    Himself. Divine and resplendent ovalshaped objects, called

    Jyothirmaya Linga, emanate fromHismouth onMahashivarathri

    everyyear. Similarly,unlimitedquantitiesofnectar inagolden

    vesselwithasuitablegoldenspoonwerematerializedmanytimes

    from the sandsof theriverChitravati for innumerabledevotees.

    An interestingaspectoftheuniqueandrareobjectsmaterialized

    bySwamiisthattheseareforthebenefitofotherpeopleonlyand

    notforHimself. Cantherebeamoredivinequalitythanthis? Is

    therethenanydoubtinsayingthatSwamiisanAvathar?

    AbundantKnowledgeandNaturalScholarship

    In severaldiscussionsand forumsof learned scholarsorganizedby Swami on Vedic scriptures, epics or Puranas, whenever he

    explains the most intricate and subtle aspects, even learned

    scholars feelsurprisedandhappy. Everyaspect thathe touches

    we find concrete evidence in the Vedas, other scriptures and

    Puranas.

    In Prashanthi Nilayam, on a Shankara Jayanthi Day, in thepresenceofSwami,Ihappenedtogiveadiscourseonthedivine

    name Sathya Sai. I explained the significanceof thename in

    terms ofBrahma,Vishnu andGayathri, supportedby scriptural

    quotations.

    Nextday,when Iwent toSwami to take leave fromHimbefore

    mydeparture,

    He

    materialized

    with

    His

    hands

    the

    picture

    of

    SathyaSaiwiththebackgroundofShivaLinga. Whileshowingit

    to me He said: Sa means Shiva, and Ayee means mother

    Goddes (Amba). Sai, therefore, means Samba Shiva, Shiva

    Shakthi. Thus,HedefinedthenameofSathyaSaiandgavethat

    picture to me. The previous day I explained the meaning of

    SathyaSai

    only

    in

    terms

    of

    Brahma,

    Vishnu

    and

    Gayathri,

    and

    not

    Shiva. SoIthought,Henotonlyfilledthegapinmyexplanation

    but also explained tome thatHis true form is none other than

    Parama Shiva, the ever auspicious and blissful entity. I felt

    extremelyhappyandblessed.

    Nilayam all the time. We are indeedblessed tobe able to see,

    speaktoandservetheallpowerfulSwami.

    How is it possible for human beings to describe fully the

    superhumanpower of Swami? However, I tried to describe in

    detailjustoneofHismiraculouspowerswhichIhadthefortune

    towitnessdirectly. Iwillrefertooneverse(Shloka)inSriSathya

    Sai Suvarnamalawrittenbyme, and then conclude this chapter

    withPranaamstoSwami.

    ignorance

    in

    my

    mind

    and

    make

    the

    jewel

    of

    Atma Jnana (Knowledge of the Self) shine with resplendent

    samsarotherthanthecontemplationofthenameofShiva.

    ContemplatingonthesacredfeetofSriChandrasekhara,another

    the sonborn to Athri and Anasuya is knownby the name of

    Dattatreya,meaningthatIhaveallowedMyselftobeadopted

    9 SonsofImmortality(AmrutasyaPutrah)

    From time immemorial, due to the accumulated results of ouractions,aftertakingseveralbirthsasbirdsandanimalsandother

    lowerbeings,at last,wearebornashumanbeingswithamind

    and intellect of our own to lead an independent life. To that

    extent,wemustconsiderourselvestobefortunate. Furthermore,

    we are indeedvery fortunate tobeborn in this land ofBharat,

    wheregreatrishis,sagesandsaints,andworthymenandwomen

    ofsupremeknowledgeflourishedovertheages.

    Whenwearefortunatetohavethisuniqueopportunity,wemust

    makeeveryefforttoascendtoahigherlevel,i.e.toachieveeternal

    blissandhappiness; todescend to lower levelsdoesnotbefitan

    intellectualbeing. Ifwethinkcarefully,reachinghigherlevelsor

    goingdowntolowerlevelsisinourownhands. Toachieveself

    satisfaction and the happiness of the celestial beings,ParameshvaraHimself and through theMaharishis has handed

    overandtaughtusthewaysandmeans,whichconstitutedharma

    (righteousness), artha (wealth), kama (aspiration), and moksha

    (salvation). ThoseteachingsformthecontentofVedas,andother

    spiritualscriptures. Dependingononesdispositionandability,

    and the extent to which one deserves, the rituals and other

    activitiessuch

    of

    Vedas

    and

    scriptureshavebeenprescribedwithaview to relieveone from

    suffering the sorrows and pains of this world, and to confer

    supremeblissandhappiness,ultimatelyleadingtotheattainment

    expenses;ifonehasdevotion,Shivaworshipispossiblebyusing

    clay tomake Parthiva Linga,water for purifying the Linga, the

    maaredu (bilva) leaves forworship, and the face (mouth) as theinstrument. These are enough for Shiva worship. The fruit

    yielded for such simpleworship isSalvationor theKingdomof

    Heaven. Neglecting to perform such simple and easy Shiva

    Now, Parameshvara, on every Shivaratri, appears first as Sri
