Last Friday, November 11th, marked the 98th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914-18). Each year on this day, Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Gleeson College community came together to commemorate Remembrance Day on our Trinity Lawns, opposite our Memorial.

Once again, our students continued to impress with their reverent participation. This year, two members from each Care Group placed a candle along the memorial’s edge. Additionally, a new tradition was started with a “Plaque of Remembrance” laid at the Memorial. It is intended that each year, more names will be added to this plaque as we continue to pay our respects to those who have served in the armed forces during war, peace keeping or other support operations.

NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS TODAY, GOD IS WITH YOU!

Moderation DayLast Wednesday we held a very successful student free Moderation Day where College staff worked predominantly on planning for the transition of Year 7 students to Gleeson College in 2018. Perhaps in comparison to other schools, we do not have many student free professional development days at Gleeson College, as we view time in school and classes as very important. In saying this, these days are also necessary to allow the time and space to work on key initiatives to ensure that Gleeson is working toward continuous improvement.

Remembrance DayWe held a very special Remembrance Day service last Friday. One of the gifts of belonging to the Gleeson College community is the way that we celebrate significant events. Our students are always respectful and engaged. Thanks in particular to our Humanities & Social Sciences Coordinator, Mrs Kate Pill, for her amazing energy, passion and enthusiasm in preparing such a moving service to commemorate the end of hostilities on the Western Front 98 years ago.

College Board AGMNext Wednesday we are hosting the College Board AGM to be held in Thomas Library. Our guest speakers are the Senior School Student Leadership Team,

who will be outlining their vision for 2017, including initiatives that they are working toward. The AGM also features reports from members of the Board and Leadership Team regarding the activities of the Board over the past 12 months. It would be wonderful to see many of you at the AGM.

Year 7 Transition DaysThis week we held our annual transition days for Year 7 students that will be joining Gleeson College in Year 8 in 2017. These days are always very special and the school had a great buzz of anticipation and energy. This is just one part of our commitment to ensuring that new students to our school are supported in the transition from primary to secondary education. This time allows our new Year 8’s to ‘find their bearings’, become familiar with the geography of the College and begin to understand those things that are important to being a Gleeson College student. My thanks to the staff involved in the organisation and facilitation of these days, in particular to Mrs Amanda Price our Leader of Community Engagement and Innovation, who works tirelessly to ensure that the whole transition process is a success.

Prayer for ExaminationsYear 12 students are currently in the throes of their final assessments including examinations, and Year 11 students will also begin these soon. This can be a particularly difficult and stressful time for young people and families. Below is a prayer from the Salesians of Don Bosco

that I shared with my own son who is also completing Year 12 examinations. I offer it to all of our students who will be completing assessment tasks in the next few weeks.

Dear Lord, as I take this exam,I thank you that my value

Is not based on my performance, but on your great love for me.

Come into my heart so that we canwalk through this time together.Help me, not only with this test,

but the many tests of life that aresure to come my way.

As I take this exam, bring back tomy mind everything I studied and be

gracious with what I have overlooked.Help me to remain focused and calm, confident in the facts and in my ability,

and firm in the knowledge that nomatter what happens today, you are

there with me. Amen

‘WE WILL REMEMBER THEM’ > 2016 Remembrance Day Commemoration

REMEMBRANCE DAY FAST FACTS• The word ‘armistice’ means a truce or peace arrangement. It comes

from the Latin word ‘arma’, meaning arms and ‘stitium’, meaning ‘a stopping’, giving us the meaning: to put down your arms (weapons).

• The famous poem In Flanders Fields that made the red poppy such an iconic symbol, was written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McRae. It is said that it only took him 20 minutes to write and that afterwards he threw it in the trash (from which it was thankfully saved by a fellow soldier).

• It was not just men who went to war. In World War I, many Australian women volunteered as cooks, drivers, interpreters and other skilled positions. Female nurses served in countries such as Egypt, France and Greece, often in dangerous conditions, close to the frontline where they were exposed to shelling.

• World War I was the first armed conflict where aircraft were used. There were around 3000 Australian airmen who served with the Australian Flying Corps.

• The conditions in WWI trenches were so horrifying that they gave their name to numerous ailments that occurred there. These include: ‘Trench Foot’ (a fungal foot infection), ‘Trench Nephritis’ (an inflammation of the kidneys) and ‘Trench Fever’ (a painful infection caused by lice).

• It is estimated that the WWI trench system on the Western Front measured approximately 475 miles (764km) in length.

• Rosemary is often worn on Remembrance Day. An old tale describes the Virgin Mary spreading her blue cloak over a flowering rosemary bush. The story says that the white flowers turned blue and from that day on the bush was called the ‘Rose of Mary’.

• Many countries (such as Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Poland) also observe Remembrance Day.

YEAR 8 HOME EC > Students Design & Construct Their Own Pair of Boxers!

Home Economics is a choice subject at Gleeson College. Students who choose Home Ec in Year 8 have the opportunity

to complete a term of cooking and aterm of sewing.

In the sewing unit, students use a commercial pattern to construct a pair

of boxer shorts. It is great to see the students get imaginative with their

designs, some choosing to add creative hemming and others through their

vibrant fabric choice. Students also learn about care labels and the sustainability

of cotton in Australia. The student’s final boxer shorts will be submitted with

their care label attached. It is great to see some boys choose the subject, but it would be fantastic to see more! If you are a boy and considering studying Home Ec in Year 9 or 10, please feel free to come and have a chat to either Ms Mahony or

myself with any questions.

YEAR 11 CHILD STUDIES > Nature Play Excursion to Salisbury North PS

Recently our Year 11 Child Studies Class has been researching the importance of nature play on the health, wellbeing and development of children. Current

research highlights how incredibly important it is for young kids to get

outside and play in nature!

This week students had the opportunity to put their research into action when

they ran a 50-minute ‘Nature Play’ session with young Salisbury North

Primary School students. Their plans had to include three key components, a nature craft activity, an outdoor nature

play activity and a fruit and veggie picnic.

All our students did an amazing job planning and running their activities,

which were not only extremely creative, but perfectly embraced the nature play

concept. This meant the Salisbury North students were thoroughly engaged, gave all activities a go and were super keen to eat their fruit and veggies! Popular outdoor activities included using the sand pit area to create castles and

simple images, using the lawn for tag and team games, as well as shape-

spotting in the clouds.

The craft activities included leaf collages, rock painting and plant

stamping. The most exciting bit for many was the picnic at the end where the

young students were treated to delicious and healthy fruit bowls, fruit rainbow platters, fruit and veggie caterpillar

skewers, fruit swords and various other clever creations.

Congratulations to all Year 11 Child Studies students on an excellent activity session. A great reminder that we could probably all do with a little more time in

nature!

YEAR 11 VISUAL ARTS > National Summer Art Scholarship Up for Grabs!

Narelle Autio, photographer of Nippers 1 2014, is an Adelaide born photojournalist. Her awe-inspiring work uses ordinary individuals to look extraordinary through their surroundings. After travelling to

places like Europe and the United States, Autio returned to Australia

in 1998, saying that this was an “awakening for me.” My artwork was inspired through the context, colour

palette and inspiration of Autio’s photography. The theme of Australian

culture motivated me to create a 20.3cm by 25.4cm canvas sized acrylic

painting displaying two young boys, one of Caucasian decent and the other

of an Indigenous Australian decent.

Through research of Autio, I discovered that her photographs were centred around Australian Culture. She has previously been quoted saying “the only inspiration I needed was this

country.” Her return allowed her to view the normal aspects of life she took for granted as a child living in

Australia and see them through new lenses/views. I wanted to include this aspect of Australian culture in my own artwork. Australia has an extensive history and culture,

which incorporates all inhabitants of the land. I believed it to be crucial

to depict the two prominent types of culture and individuals in my

work, Caucasians and Indigenous Australians. My interpretation of

Australian Culture is a contribution of Indigenous and Caucasian traditions

and spirits together creating a wonderful, whole Australia. To me I felt this was important to represent

both individuals because both histories are the formation of our society,

particularly for me the art of both

cultures. In culture I see Caucasians and Indigenous Australians artwork

throughout common areas of civilisation.

The depiction of young boys was due to the fact that this same age range was seen in Nippers 1 2014. Young individuals were also used for their

innocence and future. These individuals are the future of Australia and our

Australian Culture. The decisions they make will become the decisions of the

future. Their eyes are also a main focus, as they look into a future together.

This shows that the direction of life is though the support and guidance of each

other. A quote from Autio also inspired me to create this focal point of eyes as she mentioned, “The only inspiration I needed was this country and the ability to see it with new eyes.” I interpreted

“New Eyes” as the eyes of the young and the new opinions/views they share.

Nippers 1 2014 relates to Australian Culture as this is depicting the young

training required for lifeguards in Australia. This is an important aspect

for Australia as we are a culture grow up swimming and enjoying natural waters.

Our persona of Australia is closely related to the Australian Spirit of beach days and the sun. This is then connected

to lifeguards, who so often relate to a perfect Australian beach day. Nippers

are the beginning of what our nation represents, as the new generation of beach and swimming lovers. I found

that this was very important to depict the boys in the water for this very

reason, because this is a large focus of who we are as Australians.

The colour of the boys’ faces is derived from the same brown shade, however

this has been altered to be lighter or darker through toning. I thought this was an important aspect of the

painting and what it represents. This is used to describe metaphorically

that we come from the same source. No matter the colour of our skin, we

all originate from the same roots. This was important to represent equality

of race and how we look towards a future without discrimination.

Another way I symbolised this idea of equality was through the space

given to the boys and how they almost mirror each other. Both boys are

given equal amount of space in this painting as a sign that these two races

work together equally to create the beautiful nation we live in. This was

a theme of my painting and message relating to how I view Australia.

Art gives us the ability to show our interpretations of important and often controversial attributes of life. We all see and interpret differently, which

is a beautiful quality we are all given. For me art allows me to represent my

Talented Year 11 Visual Arts student Lucy Keatch (11 FSMAR) was recently selected to submit an entry to participate in the National Summer Art

Scholarship to be held in Canberra in January 2017.

The scholarship offers the opportunity to engage with staff at the National Gallery of Australia, as well as other arts professionals and artists, through a one-week camp. Students will discover the National Art Collection and go

behind-the-scenes, participating in workshops and receiving expert tuition from Gallery staff and professional artists. Lucy’s application, which required her own

2016 SPORTS PRESENTATION NIGHT > Celebrating Our Pride in Success!

Our Gleeson Sports Presentation Night is held to recognise and celebrate all students and their coaches for their commitment to our College Sports Program, whether that be through Saturday Morning Sport or Knockout Sport. It was fitting this year’s event was held at the start of PE Week, as we all know the importance regular physical exercise plays in developing strong physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

The extra benefits associated with participation in team sports helps build characteristics of commitment, dedication, teamwork and perseverance - all traits that align us with the Gleeson 10 core values. It is about us acknowledging all students who have represented the College. Many students have shown continuation with their passion for the sport that they love, or for some a completely new game. Whatever the motivating factor is for you, I thank you on behalf of the College, for showing perseverance when the opposition is stronger on the day, humility and grace in winning, and above all good sportsmanship to all that we encounter on our journey. For we don’t ever know what reasons people have to participate, we can only be grateful that they do, as this continues to provide us with competition, growth and development.

The Saturday Morning Sports Program continues to grow here at Gleeson. More sports are being offered and the market is constantly changing, however the sports at Gleeson continue to provide good team cohesion and a welcoming

environment to new students. Saturday Morning Sport can be a daunting experience for some students who are passionate about representing the school but their experience is limited, however this environment is about developing and fostering all students to continue their development.

The sporting culture here at Gleeson is quite unique in the sense that past students continue to give of their time, to foster and develop the sports that they loved or have grown to enjoy through their time at Gleeson. We are fortunate to have very generous Old Scholars that have coached a majority of our teams this year. Along with our Old Scholars we have some very dedicated staff that continue to develop a relationship with

our students through sport and we thank all our coaches for their time and efforts in 2016.

Girls Saturday Morning Sport continues to reap success and this year was no exception. Our Open Girls Soccer Team again continued their streak as they made it to a 7th consecutive final in Knockout, as well as Indoor. This makes them the most successful team in Gleeson History! This year we also showed the depth of talent here at Gleeson as our Year 8 Girls Basketball, Year 8 Girls Netball, Middle Girls Soccer, Year 9 girls Soccer, Open Girls Soccer and Open Badminton Players all finished first in their respective divisions – an amazing achievement! Whilst the Boys Sport does not keep premiership tables, we have had some very significant wins amongst our Boy’s teams, including individual successes such as first singles game won in Tennis or Badminton, and team improvements and achievements in Basketball and Soccer.

A massive thank you to our special guest speaker Dylan McGowan (GC Old Scholar and Adelaide United FC defender) for his attendance with wife Rebecca on the night. It was truly wonderful to have you return to Gleeson and celebrate this event with us. I congratulate all our 2016 Sports Award Winners and wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavors.
