Worldwide spring show Bullish on Business

“Traffic was brisk in the aisles of the Worldwide show with more stores staying through the last day of the show than i can remember in quite some time”, stated Worldwide Vp sales, deb hammond. The show had 215 Members and prospective Members attending for the 2½ day spring show held at the reno-sparks Convention Center.

if you were in attendance at the Worldwide show you have to ask the question, “What recession?”

russ pitman, Terramar Vp sales & Marketing commented “The recent reno Worldwide show was very successful for us and we thank the staff for all the hard work and effort they put into a great show.”

The Worldwide Members were found to be very optimistic and have weathered the recession exceptionally well. it is times like these that our Members, typically located in smaller communities, find the strength in being an independent retailer. They have

The annual awards to honor stores, vendors and representatives were given out at the General Membership Meeting held prior to 565 booths opening on Tuesday, February 24th (see article on page 3).

The product categories represented at the show were hunting & shooting sports, Camping, Fishing, Footwear, Apparel and homeWorld.

if you were one of the fortunate members in attendance at the ATF seminar during the show, you left the seminar feeling like it was 90 minutes very well spent. We heard many comments from members like: it was very worthwhile, repeat it every February, best seminar i’ve attended in quite some time, and many more. There were over 120 people in attendance.

The topics covered included 1) The ten most frequently cited violations and how to avoid them; 2) Computerized A & d records; 3) electronic version of the 4473 form, requirements of how to use them, and how to fill them out, among other important topics. The nearly one hour presentation was followed by what many members thought was the best part of the seminar....a

30 minute question and answer period. The ATF representatives fielded many more questions than they expected and actually thanked us for allowing them to be a part of the show. They stayed for several minutes after the meeting to answer individual questions.

We would like to thank natalie Weitzman, Cathy lisek, Amy Johnson and Joel Thorpe of the ATF for making such a great presentation.

They were impressed with our group and were appreciative of what they learned as well as what they were able to teach. in the end, a good and prosperous time was had by all and due to popular demand, we look forward to having them back again soon.

We had our own fashion event at the Worldwide reno show. As buyer’s arrived they were given s.w.a.g bags. What are s.w.a.g bags? Bags filled with goodies from various vendors for everyone to enjoy. All welcomed the delicious food and drink provided in a relaxing setting.

the twenty outfits that were modeled down the runway. Buyers ordered items/outfits in a no pressure format, using pre-printed order forms. The setting, outfits and ordering logistics were apparently right on, as orders totaled close to $20,000.

Buyer’s comments were completely positive, so much so that in september expect to see more outfits in women’s, as well as some in kids and men’s on the runway.

The award for softlines Vendor of the Year for 2008 was given to Golden Touch sportswear at the recent reno show. stephen Jackson accepted the award on behalf of the new York-based company. stephen works out of his home state of Utah, covering much of the western United states, as well as attending meetings and shows on either coast. he is a strong proponent for the Worldwide group, securing advantageous pricing and deliveries for the members.

Worldwide goes back a long way with Golden Touch. Judy Cyphers remembers days long past of the womens committee taking over the entire new York showroom.

Teresa Ross, and her husband, John, were cited at the Reno show as the Representative(s) of the year in the Softlines category, representing Woolrich.

Teresa has a long affiliation with Worldwide, going back to her days working for GI Joes. As our reps for Woolrich, Teresa and John call on the Worldwide members, considering them to be the backbone of the independent retail community. At the shows

Hardlines rep of the YearTim Bailey & Associates - Jason reddon

When a young Jason reddon graduated from high school and began his career as a carpenter, he had no idea he would end up here in an article of the Globe for Worldwide members. he states that even though he was building homes, his passion was fishing and his dream was to open his own sporting goods store someday. he quit his job and went to work for Fred Meyer to gain some valuable retail experience, he was hired away from them by Maurice sporting Goods, and spent 8 years as a route sales person before joining Tim Bailey and Associates in 2000. he took over the Worldwide account for Tim about six years ago and the pace of his life has never been the same.

Jason has one of the most pressure-packed jobs in our industry,

they willingly work with many members well outside their territory to make sure members get the service they need. They work specials and closeouts for the shows and generally make sure we are availed of all the deals that the company has. Teresa and John also take steps to ensure Woolrich's continued participation in the show ; at one point having to foot the bill on their own for the booths. We value the close association we have and thank them for the service they so enthusiastically provide. They are both genuine people and we are happy to announce them as our Softlines Reps of 2008.

one of our longest, strongest, and nearest vendor relationships was chosen as hardlines Vendor of the Year for 2008 - Wilmar performance Tool. located just a few miles from the Worldwide offices over in renton WA, Wilmar is continually one of our most organized and efficient vendors when it comes to show preparation and participation. The company was founded in 1971 and was originally located in Tukwila WA (again just a few miles from our offices) until moving to a larger location in 2007.

The relationship between Wilmar and Worldwide goes back further than anyone can remember and

Hardlines Vendor of the Yearwilmar Performance tool

seems to grow stronger everyday.

in 2006, when Worldwide instituted our Vendor Member program, one of the first to sign on was Wilmar and they remain a consistent top performing member of that group today. sales have increased steadily over the last 4 years, driven in part by promotional led flashlights that every one of our members seems to be selling at fantastic margins, driving a sales increase of nearly 350% over that time. When it comes to preparation, participation, shipping, profit margin, quality and partnership....no one stands up to the test like Wilmar.

Thanks to John Cantalini, Mike Cantalini, Tanya sukert, and their entire staff for their continued support of Worldwide and its member stores.

Softlines Vendor of the Yeargolden touch

"There were so many lines, with the juniors, girls, missy and so on, we divided up at various stations and worked the entire line - it would take 2-3 hours. The Golden Touch staff would help us and keep us in sandwiches and coffee. they were great to work with".

For the year 2008 Worldwide's business with Golden Touch and its label divisions, (Golden Touch, Golden Too, planet Gold and Tiara) totaled over $570,000. in the women's apparel category this is a significant volume performance.

Congratulations to Golden Touch as our softlines Vendor of the Year for 2008.

coordinating the Worldwide shows for the TBA group, with anywhere from 16 to 18 booths, putting together programs and specials for up to 32 factories, working with 5 different buyers at our offices, informing 22 other TBA sales people and personnel on what is happening, placating factory sales managers, getting phone calls and problem solving for a diverse group of independent retailers from all over the country(our members), and not least of all, keeping his boss happy. Jason not only gets it done, he does it better than anyone else, which earns him the well-deserved moniker of “king Worldwide” from his fellow sales associates. Jason lives about 20 minutes from our offices in Auburn WA with his wife karen, son kyle (age 17) and daughter Jessica, who is currently attending college at Washington state University. his proximity to our offices helps explain why he seems to be here nearly everyday at show time, which is what it takes to do a complete job of not only show preparation, but keeping year-around programs updated, introducing new lines, and taking care of any problems that might arise. We thank Jason for a job well done and appreciate his attention to detail.

Congratulations on being selected as our hardlines representative of the Year for 2008.

kristie Timss presented the first ever Women’s Big Bird ad at the show. The women’s assortment is set as an option for stores to consider. The items that were included in the ad were…Gold Medal magic gloves, Gold Medal butter socks, driz Connection fleece disney print pJ bottoms, White Mountain dry Goods organic tees and a skechers wool clog. The response from the members about the ad created so much excitement members gave kristie lots of ideas about what kind of additional items they would want for their ad. look for the next 5 items at the september show.

not many businesses, particularly family-owned retail businesses, are able to stand the test of time. however, one strong and steady locally- and family-owned business has proven itself for 50 years by sticking to its core values of offering legendary customer service and convenience, at competitive pricing: nyberg’s Ace.

The beginnings of nyberg’s Ace initiated with an ambitious youngster, roy nyberg, at a young age. his strong work ethic began early, as he began peddling newspapers at age 5. he continued this business venture till he was seventeen. roy nyberg started part-time work at Ace hardware in international Falls, Mn at age sixteen. After World War ii and completing college, roy went to work at Ace hardware in hibbing, Mn in 1950 where he took a strong interest as an employee, learned well, and eventually became an assistant manager of the store. in January 1958, roy purchased the 3500 sq. ft. Ace hardware in sioux Falls, sd.

less than ten years later, in 1969, nyberg’s Ace hardware saw a need to expand and relocated to a 15,000 square foot store was built—four times larger than the original store.

since 1969, the store has undergone expansions and major remodelings. First, the east wing was built to provide a lumber and building center. The west wing was added when a car wash was removed and a free-standing building was constructed to serve as the lawn and Garden department throughout most of the year, then remerchandised into what became known as “Toyland” during the fourth quarter. The third expansion was joining the lawn and Garden building to the original store. in 1983, under the supervision of General Manager kevin nyberg, roy nyberg’s son, the entire store was remodeled to represent 30,000 square feet. in 1989, roy nyberg retired and kevin nyberg stepped in as president of nyberg’s Ace.

in 1990, another remodel was implemented at the 41st & Minnesota location, using Ace hardware’s store of the Future concept. later that year, in september, a second nyberg’s Ace location was added to the sioux Falls area. nyberg’s Ace third location in eastern sioux Falls opened in the fall of 2000. To complete the coverage of sioux Falls’ four corners, nyberg’s Ace recognized a need to locate a fourth location on sioux Falls’ west-side in 2004.

The root of nyberg’s Ace’s longevity is offering conveniences such as neighborhood locations, close parking, a helpful and trained staff, and a number of services that are hard to find. services like window and screen repair, knife sharpening, hunting & fishing licenses, key cutting…in fact, the folks at nyberg’s Ace have cut more than 15,000 keys a year! All four locations offer a full-line paint department, a paint store within a store. nyberg’s Ace sells the most propane in the sioux Falls area. nyberg’s Ace was the first to offer, and continues to offer, a variety of seminars to further educate shoppers and offer value to their purchasing decisions, such as Wilton cake decorating seminars, hunting and fishing seminars, weather-preparedness seminars, and more. nyberg’s Ace was also the first to offer the Baby Boomers discount day—a special day where Baby Boomers received a 20% off discount storewide.

nyberg’s Ace strives to offer a wide-array of products to sioux Falls, and was the first to bring several products and well-known brands to the sioux Falls area. For instance, nyberg’s Ace was the first to offer Weber grills and replacement parts to sioux Falls 50 years ago with the original nyberg’s Ace hardware store. Throughout the years, nyberg’s Ace has frontiered the selling of popular brands such as scotts lawn care products; Wilton baking products; palisade, Colorado peaches; and has taken the lead on offering special weather-preparedness products such as digital rain gauges & thermometers, winter survival kits and weather radios. nyberg’s Ace also brought the sporting Goods category as a specialty retailing unit to the sioux Falls market. When nyberg’s Ace originated, there were no specialty sporting Goods stores in sioux Falls, so nyberg’s Ace offered a large sporting Goods department offering a wide array of hunting and fishing supplies, including guns, ammunition, outerwear, licenses and more. nyberg’s Ace is also the exclusive Certified Chipkey Center in the sioux Falls area—computerized Chipkeys are an anti-theft device located in many vehicles with specialized keys for entry and starting your vehicle. nyberg’s Ace is proud to be celebrating 50 years of service in the sioux empire!

With blisters on their feet and pens running out of ink, forty members persevered and stayed in reno for a couple more days to attend the Toy show, which started on Friday morning. The Worldwide Toy import program once again proved to be a hi-light for those that sell toys. The toys bought through the domestic programs continue to be very competitive so the members use the import program to add value and margin to this still great category for many of our members.

The numbers are still being tallied but it looks like the import Toy program will be very successful again this year.

Mystery Breakfast Dances for DollarsThe Mystery Breakfast picked up the tempo the last day of the Worldwide spring 2009 show with “dancing with the Vendors.” Two professional dancers put the vendors and reps through their paces (literally) by having them out on the dance floor. From the waltz to the salsa, the reps did their best to keep from stepping on the toes of their professional partners.

steve “Bergeron” Quarders along with kristy “samantha” longfellow-hodik were the hosts. The Judges, Jon “Bruno” Wright, kristie “inaba” Timss and Mark “len” Williams were tough on the performances. But the reps were good natured about the ribbing. And they responded with some great deals for members.

“As always, i enjoyed the camaraderie between the vendors and the members,” says Ted szewczyk of Fox outdoor products, inc. “i had a great time at the Breakfast Meeting! My dancing was off a little since i was wearing a pair of hiking boots. i scored a 27 and was hoping for a 30. The

Many members ask at various times of the year what is selling in stores; wondering if maybe they are missing the boat not having a particular item that might be a top seller somewhere else.

Worldwide has asked a select group of Members to help share information about their stores. This monthly list will consist of the top ten selling items in their store. Worldwide has started the campaign on the Worldwide Weekly web. We have asked ten stores with pos systems to send Worldwide a list of their top 10 best sellers for each month by vendor, retail price and quantity sold.

Worldwide has arranged the data in a uniform format to share with member stores on the weekly web update. Worldwide is always looking for ways to share information and network with members.

2009 marks the end of an era with the announced retirement of dan Burch. dan has represented the shakespeare Company for more than 45 years. during his time with the company, he had continued his tireless pursuit of supporting his sole employer and you, the independent retailer. dan Burch is largely responsible for the growth experienced by Worldwide members with the shakespeare brand. he alone took this vendor from nothing to a supplier exceeding the one million dollar mark every year for the last decade. his passion for the business will be missed by all who know him. While no words can describe our gratitude to dan, Worldwide acknowledged this milestone by presenting him with our first ever lifetime achievement award. dan graciously accepted this award in the same manner in which he has approached his career giving thanks and credit to you, the dealer. his journey has left a memorable mark on all of us in the sporting goods industry.

Worldwide staff always come up with great antics to keep the members alert and interested in the meeting. i actually look forward to the Breakfast Meeting. it is definitely one of the highlights of the show. it is a pleasure being a vendor in the Worldwide group!”

Ted sold 27 swiss style Multi - Function knife pre-packs at the breakfast meeting.

The highest volume item was an assortment of plastic bowls sold by Jerry Fricke. highest dollar volume was from Bob schalkle with a Fox river boot sock.

Andrew peterson of ledge sports won the Judges’ spirit Award for his dance. rusty Brannan won best dance for his interpretation of an AC/dC song. Vinny Chiarenza won, not for worst item but for worst dance; a clog stomp to a Viennese waltz.

overall, the members found nearly $150,000 in high margin deals at the breakfast.

The nielson Company recently released data showing the eight fastest growing food value categories.

number one was bulk rice, growing 38% in 2008. next was ramen noodles at 30% followed by dry pasta at 25% growth.

Margarine and spam were next with canned vegetables, frozen vegetables running close behind.

The last was everyone’s favorite: macaroni & cheese; growing 7% in the past year. not surprisingly, caviar did not make the list.

Jerry Gibbs retires

from Boardinsightful and focused, Jerry Gibbs of Big r Watseka (#311) recently completed serving three years on the Worldwide Board of directors. however after much thoughtful consideration Jerry announced he was retiring from the board without serving a second term. he felt he needed to devote more time to his business.

Jerry attended his last Board meeting Wednesday evening, just prior to the shareholder Meeting. he was honored at both the General Member & Vendor Meeting and the shareholder Meeting. he was given a desk globe to commemorate his service to Worldwide and its members.

Jerry noted that “Worldwide members are a very diverse group, but we all have two things in common: one, we like to purchase merchandise and sell it for a profit; and two, we are proud owners of businesses that treat their customers and employees fairly and equitably. Good business principles apply to all businesses regardless of their size or sales volume.”

Jerry was also featured on the Worldwide promotion video that is still provided to prospects to help initiate them to Worldwide buying. in the video, Jerry reflects on the importance of sharing between members and the mutual benefit that belonging to a cooperative has for the independent retailer.

“Jerry was a great addition to our Board,” says Mark Williams, Worldwide’s president. “during Board discussion he was always prepared to add great suggestions and thoughts. he will be missed.”

“My term on the board was time well spent. i was happy to contribute to Wdi to make it a better and stronger organization,” says Jerry. “our perspective as multi-store Midwest retailers was important for Wdi management to hear. My tenure on the board also helped me better understand how Wdi operates. A key benefit of serving was the ability to communicate and share with the other board members. These board members are some of the finest retailers in the United states. i learned much from them and, hopefully, they were able to profit from my input. “

Wyoming Work Warehouse became a member in 1989. Their three Wyoming locations are in Casper, Gillette and rock springs. some of you will remember the original owners Mark and sherrie Burton. They sold the business a few years ago to: Tony klamm, david rawson and sol noltensmeyer, three of their longtime managers. This was a succession plan that was

orchestrated by the Burtons that resulted in a successful transition to new owners that were active and interested in the continued success of the business.

A MoVe To porTlAnd in The FUTUrefacility that will more than handle our trade show needs. Many of the hotels in the area have also undergone extensive renovations within the last year.

We will still be in Reno for the next two shows, September 2009 and February 2010.

As we get closer to the Portland dates we will be giving you more information about the exact dates for the shows and a guide to the city.

Worldwide shareholders overwhelmingly approved second terms for current board members rob Cassidy of parker Cassidy (#594) in Clinton, iowa and for ed pennington of ohio Valley Trading (#315) in nelsonville, ohio.

“i’m really looking forward to serving a second term on the board,” said rob Cassidy. “i see Worldwide as a co-op that is made up of outstanding independent retailers from around the country, an excellent staff that works hard to respond to members’ needs and progressive leadership at the top. i have learned as much from my involvement on the board as i have given back to the organization. i, along with my fellow board members will continue to work diligently to represent our shareholders best interests”.

The third nominee elected to the board was kevin nyberg of nybergs (#167) in sioux Falls, south dakota. kevin has served on the Worldwide board previously and has also served as its chairman.

elected Worldwide board members serve for a three year term. They can be re-elected for one additional consecutive term.

The Board also recognized the service dave Vanderbilt of Vanderbilts (#803) based in Wamego, kansas provided as Chairman of the Board for the last two years. he is being succeeded as Chairman by loren Arfmann of Arfmann’s Four seasons (#237) of salmon, idaho.

The Board also elected Brent dennis of dennis Company (#024) in raymond, Washington to serve as Vice-Chairman and Michelle slack of Country Fair (#113) in st. Maries, idaho to serve as Board secretary. Brent will serve a two year term as Vice Chairman and Michelle will serve a one year term as Board secretary.

The Worldwide Trade Show will move to the Oregon Convention Center in September 2010 and September 2011.

The Oregon Convention Center is the largest convention center in the Pacific Northwest. It is located in beautiful and lively downtown Portland and situated on the banks of the Willamette River. With an easy-to-use transit system you can explore even the farthest reaches of the Portland metropolitan area in your free time.

This is not the first time we have held our show in Portland. The last time dates back to 1993. The convention center has undergone an expansion and renovation since then so you will see an up-to-date

value for their dollar.

34% cited wanting products that simplified their life. 33% wanted a healthier option. 33% wanted products that saved them time.

only 22% were interested in products that were made from all natural ingredients. And only 17% were seeking products that were innovative.

Although this study focused mostly on consumable, non-durable products, the lesson can still be applied to all products sold. With each dollar being spent as being increasingly more precious to most consumers in difficult economic times, the need for value, quality and durability becomes important.

We strongly believe that Worldwide stores can improve sell through by emphasizing these key points in their merchandise presentations at the store and in their ad copy.

Through February, Worldwide’s stores, excluding Joes sports, outdoor & More were up 2.3% in purchases through the cooperative. Worldwide’s 50 Top Volume stores were up nearly 10% through February.

not surprisingly, Worldwide’s member stores have held up well during the financial storm that has swept the nation. some stores have seen their numbers rise in the double digits from 2007.

stores that offer firearms and firearms related merchandise have done particularly well. But that is not the whole story.

Worldwide stores traditionally offer strong value for each consumer dollar spent. They also reside in communities where they have a great reputation by local consumers as a place that they can shop in confidence.

in a recent study conducted by Brand spark international/Better homes and Gardens, consumers shared the factors they consider extremely important when considering purchasing food, beverage, personal or household care products.

The study allowed multiple answers to the questions. 57% of consumers wanted products that provide better value for the money. 42% said better quality. And 40% mentioned the product should be longer lasting, more durable.

68% believed that private label products offered extremely good

Everyone’s a winner at the social

remington Arms Company enjoys

successful First showAccording to Myron Merkel, Worldwide hunting sports buyer, “Judging from the stack of sales order confirmations i just received in the mail from them and by my conversations with the remington representatives at the show, they had a very successful show!” While exact numbers are not available, indications are that remington wrote several million dollars of business and the results more than showed that timing was right to have remington back at the Worldwide show for the first time in over 10 years. They were quite pleased with the interest level from the membership and wrote more orders than planned.

Myron will continue to work closely with them to secure deliveries, put together additional specials, and generally keep their name in front of our members and our name in front of them. keep watching the weekly web and your mail box for further updates.

Always looking at ways to improve the Worldwide social, Worldwide management came up with a new idea. The idea? Move the social to the show floor and give exhibitors an opportunity to bring new Members to their booth by offering scratch Tickets. exhibitors could choose the prize(s) they wanted to give away, order the amount of tickets and decide how many “winners” and “losers” they wanted. Members were then encouraged to sample an appetizer and beverage from several locations around the show floor and wander up and down aisles and take in exhibitors and lines they hadn’t visited before, all the while collecting scratch tickets from participating exhibitors.

even “losers” had a chance to

become winners by dropping off their losing tickets. once deposited, Members were eligible to win the Grand prize. What was the Grand prize you ask? The Grand prize included 2 round-trip tickets to reno, 4 night lodging at the peppermill or Atlantis hotel, 2 nights lodging in Tahoe and 1 rental car for six days! The winner was drawn at the Mystery Breakfast on Friday morning. Congratulations go to Member #789 ll Cote located in errol, nh.

The scratch Ticket social was considered a success by Members and exhibitors alike. And judging by how quickly the food and beverages were consumed, well attended. overheard at the airport, a new exhibitor exclaimed, “The scratch ticket promotion was a great thing, i wish i had participated. i hope Worldwide decides to do it again.”

steve evertson, hardlines buyer for dennis Company (store #24) has been involved in the sporting goods business and with Worldwide for over 30 years.

Born during WWii, steve moved to olympia as a young boy. his retail career started when he was still in high school in olympia and recruited to work at Yard Birds located in Chehalis. Yard Birds was one of the original members of Worldwide and was instrumental in the organization of the group. steve’s career at Yard Birds lasted over 12 years where he learned merchandising and buying skills in men’s clothing and hardware.

during those years at Yard Birds his skills were used by the Worldwide

staff and traveled overseas with the hardlines buying staff. if you catch him on the right day he might tell you about a few of his exploits in the orient during those younger and carefree days.

After a brief business venture of starting his own retail garden store in longview Washington, dennis Company pursued him because of his experience. Gary dennis had to do a lot of talking and arm-twisting but convinced steve to come to work for the dennis Company in raymond Washington as their store manager. steve settled into old Willapa with his three young daughters. After a few years as store manager he was ready for a change and was moved into the position of hardlines buyer.

When the computer age hit, steve embraced a new computer system when it was implemented years ago knowing that it would make his job easier and allow him to buy more efficiently for multiple store locations. “he has been instrumental in our circular ad campaign, sW sale and Aberdeen demo days”, commented Brent dennis. “steve loves to merchandise and will work along with everyone to get the needed

project done”, added Brent. steve enjoyed the travels that went along with the buying position and has made many lifetime friendships with the salesmen he worked with along the way. salesmen saw steve as a man of his word and always stood by his promises. They respected him for his straight forwardness and extensive product knowledge. steve has always believed in the traditional and time proven items yet considered the merits of new items as they applied to the market. “steve has always been a quiet but loyal supporter of Worldwide vendors and has been instrumental in putting together programs that benefited the entire membership through his committee work”, commented steve Quarders, hardlines Merchandise Manager at Worldwide.

now 30 years later steve will retire from the dennis Company. retirement for him won’t mean lying on the beach, he’ll be out promoting and developing product for Willapa Marine, his own business that he started years ago which his daughter, lora olson, manages.
