About Penetration• Much of the world is catching up now with
US in access to and experience with eBooks
• ‘Free’ in emerging markets still major source of access to eBooks
• High-tech countries do not always equate to high eBook penetration – e.g. France and Japan
• While only ~2% of Indian population has purchased an eBook – that number is > UK with 17% penetration
• It is always tricky to take this kind of stats to be completely true but they can help us to forecast trends

Second trend• Amazon plays a central role in US
and UK eBook distribution, but other world regions tend to be more fractured…for now (remember when Amazon entered in each market)
• Devices are becoming more affordable and content more pervasive to emerging economies…so growth will continue to happen, if infrastructures hold.
Nicola Cavalli
Third trend – Academic content• will evolve into providing different
services, such as data-mining, data presentation, content aggregation, metrics…..
• PDA, DDA, rental models will become more popular
Nicola Cavalli
Fourth trend – Trade content• As the academic will evolve into
providing services (conversations, platforms) but product will remain central
• New products will emerge and become more popular (apps), more entertainment products than traditional books
Nicola Cavalli
Fifth trend 1/2– Learning content
E-textbook market is at least as large as consumer market
Higher EducationIn US, most e-books are sold as part of online courses, or integrated with formative assessment systemsDigital sales in US Higher Ed topped $750m in 2010, according to AAPK-12Governments around the world are pushing the transition from print to digital textbooks
E-textbooks are the tip of this iceberg Truly transformative digital learning requires more than simply ‘e’ing text books The focus of the digital transition in education isn’t about ebooks, it’s about accelerating the transformation of teaching and learning
Nicola Cavalli
Fifth trend 2/2– Learning content• As the previous will evolve into
providing services (complete online course solutions, learning communities, note sharing, personalization) but (e)-textbook will remain central
• Rental and chapter sales will grow (CourseSmart, Amazon, AcademicPub)
