Why a Roadmap
Complex information needs for agricultural development through research and innovation cannot be met by simply making information available.

Need for cooperation and orientation The gigantic task of providing agricultural information
globally cannot be done by a few actors and cannot be done without being aware of what others have done and do
The Web RING wants to provide an orientating service for the existing initiatives in order to facilitate and speed up the process towards advanced integrated value-added services for the users
Project PresentationThe Global ARD Web R.I.N.G.

The Web RING service The Web RING will monitor existing services and initiatives
through a registry of: participating organizations adhering initiatives and projects compliant information services value-added services implemented within the framework
The Web RING will categorize and interlink the featured services according to criteria based on: standards used, vocabulary used, technology used, protocols used, level of interoperability etc. and will feature detailed instructions on how to interoperate the featured services

The Web R.I.N.G. target user
The end-users of the this Roadmap are not the users looking for ARD information, but the users looking for existing services which they can leverage for building more advanced and value-added information services

Examples of featured services The global Directories (organizations, projects etc.) now under
development in the context of the Content Management Taskforce (CMTF) of CIARD
Services that provide RSS feeds or even more specialized XML or RDF exports of information based on agreed metadata sets
Services that provide advanced web services to dynamically generate RSS feeds or XML or RDF exports of information
Services that share their documents participating in the new AGRIS or in the Open Archive Initiative, possibly using common or mapped vocabularies

Examples of featured services (2) Services that offer a common browsing or searching interface
to different sources.
Services that interface the different knowledge organization systems (KOS) used by the various sources
Integrated services linking entities (organizations, projects, experts, documents) through hyperlinks and relations
Services providing advanced services like digests, bibliographies, best practices, surveys etc.

Next steps A logo will be designed that can be used by all featured
services to label and indicate their inclusion in the Global ARD Web Ring.
The CIARD Content Management Task Force and the related communities working on standards and protocols will provide the guidelines and technical specifications for making services interoperable
The GFAR Secretariat will initially maintain the registry of services that are participating in the Global ARD Web Ring.
GFAR will organize workshops for advocacy and capacity building on how to effectively participate in the Web RING

The goal of the Web RINGThe goal the Web RING expects to serve is
a network of high quality, integrated information services that meet the needs of the agricultural research and development community and which enables this community to share information, knowledge, skills and technology for agricultural development
The information services will be free and publicly available, thus constituting Global Public Goods that can be leveraged by any organization, person or information service.
