From the Editor As you may know I have recently moved out of the village due to a c h a n g e i n p e r s o n a l circumstances. I am hoping this will be a temporary move away from Greatworth and I still continue to be about in the village whilst working at Playgroup. Nick Peart has kindly agreed to take over editing The Glimpse for the foreseeable future so all correspondence needs sending to him, preferably by email at [email protected] Or delivered to Stonelea, next to the pub. I would like to take this chance to thank the team who have helped with producing The Glimpse during the time I have edited it, including all those who make regular contributions. It has been a pleasure. On a personal note I would also like to thank my many friends in the village for all their help during a difficult time. I am missing living in Greatworth and hope to be back with you all soon. Liz Wolstenholme

The 1911 Census

It is now possible to look up details of this census on the village website www.greatworthparishcouncil.co.uk. The details are those of Great-worth, Halse and Stuchbury. The names of those in these places, and their details, are included as are the details of those with a connection to this parish but who were elsewhere (e.g. those who were born here but had gone to live somewhere else, or ministers or schoolteachers who had moved on - or hadn't got here yet). In order to see these details go to 'Greatworth Parish Council Forum' and then to 'General Discussion'.

Dolly Mixtures A warm evening saw us at ‘Culkein’ for our annual garden party, by kind invitation of Joyce & Mick Scott. Shelia Lee had devised a devilish quiz, the winners were, Greta & Annie. All members brought along a plate of appetising delicacies, so many that the sweets had to be transferred to the kitchen. Joyce & Mick also provided us with wine. Very many thanks to both of you for your hospitality. Business items and the raffle were then concluded. Our next meeting takes us to Tooley's Boat Yard, Banbury for a presentation and a boat ride priced at £7.50 per person. Meet at Marston Village Hall at 7.00pm prompt unless you are travelling direct to Banbury. Parking at Chamberlain Court is advised as it is free. Our meeting at Tooley’s Boat Yard is at 7.30 prompt. Marston St Lawrence Village Hall - Coffee Morning

Thank you to Rebecca and Stephen Goodwin for hosting the May coffee morning which made £90. It was lovely to be able to sit out in the garden and see one or two faces that we have not seen for a while.

The next coffee morning is on Saturday 26th July and will be hosted in the Village Hall by Carol and Brenda Gibbons. There will be another opportunity to see some of the village archive material which was displayed last year so please come along and have another peek in to the past of Marston St Lawrence.

Users of the village hall will notice some improvements with new floors having been laid in the toilets and door closers on the main doors. Other repair works are also being carried out.

GREATWORTH & HALSE PARISH COUNCIL

Hello – I am Simon Loake, and I am delighted to have been appointed as Clerk to Greatworth Parish Council – although it will be particularly hard to follow the long service of Walter Stageman, and I confess to not (yet) having his experience or wealth of local knowledge. I am very grateful to him for the smooth handover and the assistance that he has given me. I am a native of Northamptonshire, and, apart from an exciting couple of years in London and Amsterdam during my youth, I have lived in the county all my life. I trained as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand at their office in Northampton, later becoming Office Manager at a smaller firm of accountants who were opening an office in the then new city of Milton Keynes. I then left the profession to follow my dream, and became heavily involved in the music business, as a professional musician, a sound engineer, and also as a freelance presenter/producer with the BBC. However, when a growing family demanded more stability in my life, I again picked up pen and calculator, and in 1993 I returned to accountancy, undertaking contracts in the sport, charity and education sectors. \

As well as being Clerk to Greatworth Parish Council, I am also Clerk to my home village of Tiffield, near Towcester. When not doing this or playing music, I lead a quiet and gentle life with my partner Paula, a large black dog called Albert and a couple of hens.

I shall be visiting the village at least once a week, usually on Wednesdays. You are sure to spot me, as there aren’t usually many long-haired men of 6’9” walking round the village! Residents are welcome to contact me by telephone on 01327 352002 or by email at [email protected].

There have been several meetings in quick succession since I took over from Walter Stageman as Clerk to the Parish Council. One on 7 April, one directly before the Annual Village Meeting on 28 April, and on 15th May the Annual Meeting of the Council (at which Nick Peart was re-elected as Chairman and Peter Masser as Vice Chairman) was directly followed by an ordinary meeting. The main business of these meetings has, of course, been the Parish Council’s petition against HS2.The specific format of the petition, the advertising and notice of the petition, the content of the petition, the huge amount of research to substantiate our case, and taking expert advice where necessary, has been a huge task, largely undertaken by Nick Peart, Victoria Ward, Eileen Edwards and Richard Hooper. In the course of recent meetings, the Council has discussed the impact to the village of noise, dust, traffic congestion, environmental issues, footpaths and bridleways, springs and the water table, compensation for reduction in property values, the effect of vibration on the integrity of older

buildings, and many related issues. The Council has considered the impact in two stages – the construction stage, which is likely to cause disruption for at least six years, with a large compound of itinerant workers living in the vicinity of the village, and the receipt and distribution of a huge amount of building materials and equipment, and the completion and operational stage, when trains are disturbing the rural quietness and beauty of our village on a regular basis. The principal recommendations of the petition are the extension of the “green tunnel” and relocating the planned construction compound to the far end of the tunnel, so that it is much further away from the village. By the time you read this article, the finished petition will have been delivered to Parliament by Nick Peart, who will be making our presentation to the Parliamentary Select Committee in due course.

The Parish Council was also notified of a Planning Application to build a large solar energy farm in the vicinity of Farthinghoe, and this would have had considerable visual impact on Greatworth, and particularly on Halse. However, following considerable local opposition, and no doubt influenced by Government’s decision to reduce subsidies for solar power, the application has been withdrawn.

A litter-picking session round the roads of the village at the beginning of May was completed successfully, although the turnout was not as large as anticipated. Next year this will be done earlier in the year before the roadside grass and hedgerows have developed.

The Parish Council has recently decided to move its banking to an online banking account – this will make the administration much simpler, and payments to suppliers will happen faster. The draft accounts, which I extracted from Walter’s immaculate records, have been approved by the Council, and will now be submitted for audit. In addition, a budget for the forthcoming year has been approved. The finances of the Parish Council are in a very healthy state, and it is likely that, when the new banking arrangements are in place, consideration will be given to the completion of the upgrade to the street lights in the village. The agenda for each meeting of the Parish Council is displayed on the notice-board on The Square, and on the notice-board at Halse, and all residents are welcome to attend PC meetings. The full minutes of meetings are posted on the Parish Council website.

Bookmarks Literary Festival warmly invites you to…

An evening Of World War I poetry with poet Peter Wyton

Friday 15th August 2014 at 8pmSt Mary’s Church, Helmdon, Northamptonshire

To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War,

Bookmarks Festival is hosting a special evening of war poetry with renowned

poet Peter Wyton.

From the trench poetry of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, to contemporary poems that explore the horrors and sacrifices of the Great War, Peter Wyton will be dramatically bringing the voices of the past back to life for what promise to be a very

special and moving evening of war literature.

Peter Wyton is the author of six poetry collections, has been twice nominated for the prestigious Forward Prize as well as the Pushcast Prize and is a previous Poet Laureate for Gloucestershire. His poetry has featured on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Poetry Please’ and he was a finalist in the inaugural BBC Poetry Slam Competition. His work has been selected for inclusion in the new Oxford University Press’ ‘The Oxford Book Of War Poetry’, from which he will be reading at the event.

Tickets are £5 if booked in advance or £6 on the door.

Email [email protected]

The performance will be followed by a wine reception (included in the price of a ticket).

All profit made from the event will go to the British Red Cross

We welcomed Reverend Eddie to the school this term. He has kindly taken over Wednesday assemblies from Reverend David since he has retired. KS2 Residential – WhitbyOn Monday 2nd June the children in Year 4, 5 & 6 went to Whitby for our Seaside Residential. This is the 3rd time we have visited Whitby and it is our firm favourite Seaside destination. We spent four days on this residential. The Youth Hostel has spectacular views over Whitby. We returned from the residential exhausted but happy! The weather was not the best we have had, but we all enjoyed the seaside in the rain and it didn’t stop us building sandcastles, paddling and eating fish and chips!

Swimming GalaOur first cluster swimming gala was held in Daventry on Monday 9th June 2014. Leila came first overall in the front crawl, Isabella came 2nd in breast stroke and Jordan came third in the backstroke. Congratulations to the three of them! Well done to the whole team who represented the school for this event: Peter, Jordan, Luke, Noah and Caspar for the boys; Isabella, Leila, Isabel R, Jasmin, Jessica and Emma for the girls. The team finished 5th overall.

Track and Field Events/Quad KidsWhat a fabulous joint team effort between Farthinghoe and Greatworth year 3 and 4 athletics team on Thursday 12th June. They won in the cluster schools athletics in 1st Place Overall, definitely worthy of the nickname the ‘Far Greater’ team! Please see the attached list of individual results in both Track and Field. Girls Team: Katya, Lucy, Emma, Maicie, Paige, Francesca and Ellisa. Boys Team: Alex.S, Alex.M, Thomas, Jude, Ben and Zack

Rounders FestivalOn Thursday 19th June some of the children in Year 5 & 6 took part in the Chenderit Rounders Festival. This was the very last sporting event that our Year 6 children will take part in for Greatworth (Mrs Hart is feeling a bit sad about that). Congratulations once again to our fantastic athletes in Year 5 & 6 who finished in 2nd Place, having won 3 matches and only loosing 1 to the eventual winners St.Loys. The team were: Jordan, Luke, William, Peter, Rhys, Charlie, Noah and Caspar.

Transfer WeekThe year six children who will be attending Chenderit in September have carried out their transfer week. They all seem happy and excited about the prospect. We hope they enjoy their last few weeks at Primary School and build further memories to take with them in July.

School Transfer MorningWe welcomed our new Reception children into school on Thursday 19th June for the morning. They all settled in very quickly and had a lovely morning. The rest of the school also moved up a year group. The new Year 3 children were particularly excited about being able to play on the KS2 play equipment.

Hotshots Basketball All Star TournamentCongratulations to Jordan Dewhurst, Luke Simpson and William Trower for being selected to take part in the Hotshots All Star Tournament. This will take place at Danescamp, Northampton, 2 – 4pm, Saturday 28th June. Good luck.

Hotshots Basketball Summer CampOnce again this summer Mrs Hart will be offering transportation to one of the Hotshots Basketball Summer Camps, Week 3: Monday 11th – Friday 15th August 2014. Depart from Greatworth Primary School at 8.15 every morning and return at 1.00pm. The cost of this week long camp is £50.00. The children will need to bring drinks/snacks and a packed lunch. On Wednesday 13th August we might go to Cineworld after the camp if there is a suitable film. I will contact you with details of this nearer the time. If your son/daughter would like to sign up for this camp please contact Mrs Hart in the school office. Open to children aged 6 – 13years.

School GroundsWhilst I appreciate that we have a lovely school field and grounds, the school is private property. It should not be used outside school hours, unless hired for community use. Many thanks.

WHAT IS PILATES? Pilates is a body conditioning technique developed in the early 20th century by German born Joseph Pilates. It is different to other methods of exercise and focuses on strengthening weak muscles whilst stretching stronger ones, to create a balanced integrated body. Pilates works both the body and mind.

WHO IS PILATES SUITABLE FOR? Pilates is suitable for men and women of all ages and abilities. Participants can be first time exercisers, those looking to enhance general fitness or enhance your current fitness plan. It is of great benefit for those wanting to help prevent injury, especially for those who suffer with lower back pain, neck problems and recurrent injuries.

BENEFITS OF PILATES Pilates improves ‘core stability’ by concentrating on strengthening the muscles of the trunk. This increases the support of the spine, which in turn improves posture, co-ordination and balance. The body becomes strong and flexible without overdeveloping major muscle groups. Stomach muscles are flattened and arms and legs are streamlined. If any of the exercises are too difficult due to a previous injury, exercises can be adapted to suit your specific needs.

Everybody welcome. If you require any further details, please contact Julie Russell on 07778 673677

The magnificent sum of £682.55 was raised which will go a good way to funding the score box improvements. Thank you to everybody who supported the evening in any way.By the time you receive this we will be half way through the season. The high-light of the 1st XI season so far was bowling Evenley out for thirty to record a convincing victory. The team is bowling and fielding really well this year and if the batting was to follow suit we would be threatening the top of the table. The 2nd XI have had mixed results and are mid table at the time of writing. It is good to see the juniors coming through the ranks with Scott Upstone scoring 68 against Braunston Paddox and brother Liam taking 5 wickets in the same match. Home fixtures in July are as follows: Saturday 5th July 1st XI v Afro CaribbeanSaturday 12th July 1st XI v Syresham Saturday 19th July 2nd XI v Hinton in the HedgesSaturday 26th July 1st XI v Warwick University Staff

Garden Party Success

St Peter’s Garden Party was a huge success on Sunday 8 June owing to the kind weather, a fantastic venue (courtesy of Thelma and Stephen Hazelton) and Diane Garett’s organisational leadership. We also have to thank profusely those who helped on the day, all those who contributed so generously to the various stalls and competitions and, not least, all who came to support us. As a result we raised over £850 towards church funds.

Tickets for the raffle of Mary Browning’s wonderful landscape of Greatworth will continue to be on sale until the December R&I coffee morning where the first number drawn will be the lucky winner. Tickets are priced at £2 each and are available from Greatworth shop or from Dave and Kay Scott.

A&C Executive - Based in Greatworth!

Marston St Lawrence Parish CouncilJob Vacancy

The Parish Council has a vacancy for a parish clerk as Rebecca Goodwin is standing down after doing the job for a number of years. The duties are not too onerous. There are generally 5 meetings a year plus an occasional additional meeting for planning purposes. The duties involve correspondence, book keep-ing (very limited), minutes, agendas and circulation of relevant information to the parish councillors. The rate of pay is £75 per full meeting or £375 per annum.

If you would be interested in supporting the community by carrying out this role or would like to know more about the work involved please contact Rebecca on [email protected] . The deadline for applications is 31st July. The Parish Council would like to make an appointment prior to our September meeting. At the June meeting the council thanked Rebecca for her work as parish clerk in recent years. The Marston Inn Planning Application

The meeting received notice that the appeal by Hook Norton Brewery against the refusal for planning permission for two houses at the back of the pub had been rejected on the grounds that it was ‘not sustainable development’.

On virtually every other matter the Inspector had supported the Brewery’s appeal but this factor of being an ‘unsustainable village’ was over riding. It does appear that under current planning legislation permission would not be given for any new houses in the village.

GREATWORTH PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

At last month's meeting the councillors heard that the District Council is supportive of changes being made to the route of the proposed high-speed railway. Work is continuing on the Windrush site on Chapel Road: the pond has been dredged and the fisheries people have taken away a number of sticklebacks and crucian carp - they will be returned in due course. The grasscutter has mentioned tha t some b ranches a re overhanging the play-area and impeding his work: the vice-chairman offered to speak to the householders. The council has been represented at recent SNAG meetings and also at a seminar at which property owners who feel they would be adversely affected by, for example, noise from the proposed railway should get a pre-announcement 'red book valuation' of their property. Our new M.P. has been spoken to about concerns and it is possible that the new Secretary of State for Transport will visit the area. It was agreed that Halse's notice-board be refurbished and re-sited - cost £250.

It was also agreed to enter the Village of the Year Competition next year. Volunteers will be needed to take this idea forward, so this is something to be thinking about. The councillors accepted and adopted the SNC's Housing Needs Survey for Greatworth. The next step will be for Mr. Brunige, the Strategic Housing Officer, to visit Greatworth and see things for himself. The councillors seemed to think that about six more affordable houses would be about right although the report actually recommended more than this. The chairman sent his apologies because he was unable to attend the meeting, but he sent along a note to say that, with regards to the proposed wind-farm, the council's position should be balanced and neutral. The councillors' job is to talk to people and tell them what they know - which, until an actual proposition is made, is not much. We will make sure that developments (if there are any) are properly publicised. Next month's meeting is at Halse on Monday 5th July at 8 p.m. and the free bus is on Thursday 1st July. Greatworth Golf Society

The Darby Challenge was held on 12th June at one of the society’s favourite courses, the Three Locks. The clear winner was Hyw Phillips with 37 Stableford points on another day blessed by fine weather. Runner up was Andy Darby himself, a determined effort to win his own trophy but not enough to beat a golfer in fine form. Longest drive was taken by John Crowe and nearest (least furthest really) the pin was Bill Brown. We look forward to the Midweek Challenge on July 8th at Kenilworth and tickets are now on sale for the evening of Captain’s Day 24th July. New members of all standards always welcome. Bill Brown

Greatworth Playgroup

As you maybe aware Greatworth Playgroup is going through a very exciting time at the moment with plans for our new building within the school grounds. In February this year I announced that we had been successful with planning permission and a grant application for the majority of the funding. I know it may appear that things have gone a little quiet since but believe me, we’re like swans at the moment, calm and serene on the surface, paddling like crazy underneath!

We do have a lot of red tape to cut through before work can commence, without going into too much detail this involves leasing the land from School/Northamptonshire County Council, documentation to comply with the funding and VAT dispensation. However, we are making real progress. We’ve appointed Nick Low of ND&C Consulting in Brackley to help manage the project and between us, Nick and Rob Brown we’re close to appointing a builder now and the real work can commence!

At this stage we’re planning to start the building work during the school summer holidays, ensuring that any work involving heavy machinery etc, is completed without disruption to school. This will mean that we are now unable to run playgroup from the new building as hoped in September. However, playgroup will continue to run within the school hall with the same hours as we do at present, apologies to anyone hoping to increase their child’s hours from then or to use wrap around care as planned. Subject to builders etc, we are aiming now at being in the new building from the beginning of Term 2, Nov 1st. At this stage we envisage some extended hours from this point, though full day care will probably not be available until 2011. Liz Wolstenholme, Playgroup Supervisor will be in touch with playgroup parents to discuss required hours for terms 1 and 2 and if anyone else has any queries regarding this please feel free to get in touch with Liz or myself.

We are extremely grateful to Mrs Toman and the Governors of Greatworth School for all their support with the ongoing planning and apologise in advance for any disruption during the build!

These are exciting times for Playgroup and there’s never been a better time to be involved, particularly if you have children about to join. Our AGM is scheduled for the 15th September, so please do come along, we always need new committee members with fresh input. Myself (Chair) and Nicky Trower (Secretary) will both be standing down this year so do come along and encourage the new Officers in their roles!

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support.

Cathi Simpson Chair of the management committee

Greatwortth Garden Group

“Hanging” Baskets and “Babylonian-type Gardens”!!

A double-whammy this month for GGG members, as we started off in a creative mode and went on to admire others creativity. . .

Firstly we were welcomed once again to Barn Farm Plants by Deborah and Mark Page to create our own summer hanging baskets and tubs, at a workshop demonstration - after a welcome freshly brewed flat white, we were keen to get our hands dirty (some brought their own gloves though!) to assemble our works of art. Deborah ably demon-strated the different types of baskets, liners and containers which could be filled in our own colours and to our own artistic design - she swiftly lined the wire basket with moss and filled with the appropriate compost, water retaining granules and fertiliser and within minutes, plants were swept through the wires, compost eased apart to allow the delicate root systems to be carefully firmed into their new home and their foliage to spill over the sides of the basket, all to applause of the happy onlookers. . . Easier said than done, but we were keen to have a go, even if it was by Generation Game standards! We scat-tered into the garden centre to begin choosing our plants and colour schemes, giving each other advice on what would look good with the relevant masonry our homes and returned to find that balancing a basket on a plant pot to line, fill and plant up was made to look an awful lot easier by the expert! Several minutes elapsed and no one had got anywhere near completing their baskets and the room was looking more like a tornado in a greenhouse!! However, Deborah systematically went around and coaxed plants into their positions, filled in gaps and rectified any small errors, so by the end of the evening we had all achieved wonders of natural beauty! Have a walk around the village and see if you can spot the works of floral art?!

The following week, our group were invited by Tadmarton Garden Group, to their open gardens - an earlier start this time, led us to meet at six o’clock and be welcomed by Malcolm Moodie, their chairman, who was giving us a tour of three gardens in the vil-lage: one large garden, one not so big and one very large garden. . . We were all as keen as mustard on this beautiful June evening to stroll round this very pretty village! Our first stop was at the garden of Ricky and Wendy Pearson, friends of Greta and Bob, (whose idea to visit another village’s open gardens was ‘sown’ during a conversation over the fence one autumn day!) Ricky and Wendy’s garden had started as little more than an area of land on a steep slope, that went with their house when they bought it. Gradually over the years they have planted trees from seed, terraced the slopes and built garden ‘rooms’ each with their own theme, producing an oasis of mature trees and plants. Intriguing steps and paths led into another area which was carefully given a colour scheme or a secluded seat or summerhouse, to enjoy the flora and wildlife therein - culminating at the top of the plot with a full Japanese garden, Bonsai area and a Japanese peace gong (bearing a striking resemblance to a recycled boiler?!) Ripe strawberries and an asparagus patch graced the vegetable area and how the hostas had not been eaten by a single slug, was a feat of dedication!

We walked on through the village to the next garden of Lyndsey Smith, which by con-trast, was a smaller more modern garden. It was by no means any less a wonderful sight, as again, the amount of landscaping and planting in a smaller space was spec-tacular, as we were met with a babbling waterfall, weaving its way through rocks and plants, dropping into a large feature pond. Various herbaceous borders were filled with a mix of colours and small raised beds in a vegetable patch held herbs and salad crops. Lyndsey explained how she and her husband built the water feature into what was just a grassy bank leading up from the patio area, and sculpted the flower borders around it all. By this time, having seen two wonderful weed-free works of art as gardens, GGG members were in awe of the work and dedication put in by these people, who obviously loved their gardens and we were beginning to feel concerned about our own efforts of being ‘green fingered’!!

Our next garden meant a car drive to get to it, which coincided very well with a big black cloud that had just come over and was dumping its downpour just as we got back to our vehicles! In convoy, we set off over the horizon and if it wasn’t for the fact that Malcolm was in the leading car, I’m sure most of us would have turned around after the second barn down the nearly mile long single track road! It eventually opened into the front of a converted barn belonging to Mike and Louise who gave us a very warm welcome - Lou-ise animatedly gave us a history of the property, from derelict barn with 5 acres including a quarry, which she and Mike had converted into their home and Mike’s enthusiasm with his digger had transformed the mainly wooded area into an oasis of formal gardens with a stream leading into a lake with a fountain, on to a woodland with paths, bridges, bulbs, shrubs and a magical ‘gnome land’ area! The grassed areas took up to 8 hours to cut and there were still plans afoot to build more rustic bridges and clear new areas to plant up. After an hour of getting lost in this magic garden, we found our way back to their house where the members of their garden group had laid on a table groaning with cakes and sandwiches and a much welcome hot drink! By this time, both groups were chatting enthusiastically with each other, talking plants and trees and swapping ideas. . . A warm vote of thanks was given to Malcolm, the gardeners and the rest of the group at Tadmar-ton for making us feel very welcome and allowing us to share their private creations. We will reciprocate the visit when we welcome Tadmarton to Greatworth next year, for our open gardens. . .time to getting creative folks?!

July GGG will meet as usual back at the school on Tuesday 8th July, where we welcome a speaker giving us a talk on “Buzzing along with Bees” - all are welcome along with visitors to the group. And don’t forget, Wednesday 23rd July is the Ball Colegrave open evening, 4-6pm - this worth a visit at Adderbury as they allow the public to see the trial beds for next year’s seeds, which is usually a riot of colour - not to be missed!August visit will be to Canons Ashby where for £8 we have a dedicated tour of the gar-dens, their history by the head gardener, followed by refreshments of tea and cake - all members, friends, villagers are welcome, so please contact Jen on 712546, with num-bers, if you’d like to go.

Enjoy these long summer days in your plots, gardens, sheds and greenhouses and reap your hard earned benefits of flowers and crops! :)

GREATWORTH - ANNUAL VILLAGE MEETING

This was held in Greatworth Primary School on Monday 28 April, and was at-tended by 63 people, together with members of the Parish Council, and our rep-resentative on Northamptonshire County Council and South Northants District Council. Nick Peart, the Chairman of the Parish Council opened his statement by thanking Walter Stageman, who has served as Clerk to the Parish Council for 23 years. A presentation was made to Walter, and the Chairman then introduced the new Clerk, Simon Loake. Inevitably, the majority of the Chairman’s state-ment concerned the impact of HS2 on the village, and the petition to Parliament by the Parish Council. He encouraged individuals to submit petitions to Parlia-ment, and he has agreed to act as the necessary agent for this. Julian Foot then addressed the meeting concerning the potential impact of a large solar farm to be built between Farthinghoe and Halse. (Since the meeting, the Parish Council has been notified that the planning application for this has been withdrawn.)

There were varied and interesting presentations from the various groups within the village – the Bellringers, the Dolly Mixtures, the Pre-School, the Golf Society, the Gardening Club, Greatworth Charity, and the Methodist Church. These were followed by a presentation by Cllr Rebecca Breeze, who represents Greatworth at South Northants Council, and by Cllr Ron Sawbridge, who represents us at Northamptonshire County Council. The Chairman also read a Crime Report submitted by our local Police Liaison Officer.

As a newcomer to the village, I was deeply impressed by the variety of activities represented, the commitment of those who organise them, and by the commit-ment and conviction of all those who represent the interests of the Parish. I hope I am able to serve the village for many years to come.

Update from HS2 Action AllianceMarch has been a busy month for HS2AA and you can find out more about what we have been up to below.

But remember three things you can do to help the campaign1. Sign Up: Make sure all your friends and family who oppose HS2 are signed up as registered supporters of HS2AA. Signing up takes less than 30 seconds at www.hs2aa.org/signup.2. Connect: Follow HS2AA on Facebook www.facebook.com/hs2aa3. Donate: If you haven’t already, please complete and return to us a standing order form for £20 a month. Remember, HS2AA operates entirely by generous donations from people across the country like you. Every penny we receive is spent on campaigning - the more we receive the more we can do. https://hs2aa.workwithus.org/Fundraising/Donate.aspx

Our principal activities in March include: Judicial Reviews

We worked extensively this month with our legal team this month prior to judgement being issued to understand the implications of the court’s decisions on the two legal cases brought by HS2AA. Despite spin from the Government, the decision on the compensation judicial review was a comprehensive victory for HS2AA-the judge ruled the consultation process was unfair and unlawful and ordered a rerun of the consultation process.

We did not win the environmental case, but the judge accepted our application on Friday for the matter to be referred to the Court of Appeal. This decision means we have been cleared for the case to be appealed to a higher court. We are therefore working on preparations for an appeal. More details, including appeal for funds, will follow in the coming weeks.

Parliamentary ActionOur lobbying work with peers saw a debate this month in the House of Lords on the business and environmental costs of HS2. The debate attracted a cross section of peers who are opposed to HS2 and was a useful opportunity to get the Government’s rail minister in the Lords to answer some of the more difficult questions on the project.

We are continuing to engage with MPs of all political parties, as well as engaging with think tanks and members of the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments. Our program of regular written briefings to MPs and Peers is key to ensuring the case against HS2 is well understood across the political spectrum. We are also meeting regularly with MPs and their researchers to push the case against HS2.

Stage 1 Consultation ResponsesWe provided detailed feedback on the compensation and “safeguarding” consultations which closed at the end of last month. We have significant concerns that the Government’s plans to safeguard areas of land required for the construction and operation of HS2 has not been thought through and will be extremely damaging to communities on the line. Both consultation responses can be found on our website.

Stage 2 Compensation ConsultationThe Government appears determined to repeat many of the mistakes and missteps which were seen in its approach to compensation on Stage 1 of the line in its actions for the line proposed between the West Midlands and Leeds/Manchester. We have written to the Chief Executive of HS2 Limited to highlight failings in the current process and are working with other key stakeholders on this process.

Media RelationsWe continue to work extensively with different media outlets to highlight the problems with the HS2 project and the impact on communities which are affected by the line. We are grateful for your continuing support.

What the Children have been doing: We are pleased to let you know that the children have made great use of our new purchases. They enjoy the new Wacky Playhouse, and the Pirate Ship is a real hit.

We have also purchased some new play equipment, which supports their physi-cal development. We have decided to purchase some new chairs and update the IT equipment, which we feel will be invaluable to the children.

The children have enjoyed practising for the Sports Day.

At the end of the term we will say farewell to 11 of our children, as they will be continuing their educational journey to school. They are Rosie, Olivia, Alex, Max, Kian, Joe, Harley, Alycia, Nicholas, Niamh & George. The children who will be graduating from us at the end of the summer term have spent some time in the school, sharing story time and snack time. They have been practising getting into their PE kits and had a transition morning at school, which will really help with the settling process. The links with the school remain very strong, so the children feel at ease and get to know the people they will be having future relationships with.

Birthdays: We would like to wish Alycia a very Happy Birthday

Fundraising:

Brackley Carnival: For those who are not aware, we had a stall at Brackley Carnival, where we were promoting the setting. Thank you to those who came along to say Hello to us. The weather was very kind to us, and we will be doing it all over again on Sunday 6th July at Banbury Mayors Day.

Future Events:

Parent/Toddler Sessions: We are continuing to run our successful Parent & Toddler Sessions on Tuesday afternoons between 2 and 3.25pm during term time. Please contact Pre-School to book your place.

Next Committee Meeting: Our next committee meeting is scheduled for Tues-day 8th July at 8pm, at Pre-School. Please feel free to come along; you will be made to feel very welcome.

GREATWORTH GOLF SOCIETY

Our 2014 season is now well underway with 2 more of our prestigious trophies won in June.

Our 36 hole competition at Gloucester Golf Club was won by Nick Hurst with a 2 round total of 60 points, Hyw Phillips second on 50 points and Richard Hooper third with 49 points. The Darby Challenge was played on an exceptionally good course at The Cotswold Club - Chipping Norton. There was a good turnout of 19 members to enjoy the day. The winner was new member John Atkin (who has already in-curred the wrath of the handicap secretary) with 40 points, Alan Garrett second on 35 points and Richard Hooper third on 33 points.Nearest the pin - Arthur ThompsonLongest drive - Colin Barrett As a reminder our 2014 programme continues with:Tuesday 24th June The WychwoodSaturday 19th July Captains Day competition at Cherwell EdgeSaturday 9th August Naunton DownsSunday 14th September Hadden HillSaturday 11th October Banbury Golf ClubSaturday 25th October Presentation Night As previously chronicled arrangements for our Captain’s Day evening at Great-worth Social Club on Saturday 19th July are well under way. Good Golfing Everybody.

The 3 Villages Show 2014The date for this year’s show, for those that have not already worked it out by school term times, will be Saturday 6th September. After our committee meeting some time ago we have some small changes and new photo and floral art categories as we do every year.

Flowers

After our very interesting bonsai talk at the start of the year we have decided that bonsai plants can have been seen in the show previously as it is an art form and an ever changing thing (also an art to keep them alive for more than a year!)Cacti/succulents, orchids and flowering/non flowering pot plants still have to have been in entrants possession for minimum of 4 months.

Hopefully you have yours set aside for extra TLC until the show!

Cookery & Wine Scone bakers note that we have opted for cheese scones in the cookery section this year rather than fruit scones.Savoury quiche is just 1 slice on a plate rather than the whole thing.New recipe cake to follow.
