The education system of a country plays a significantrole in shaping its future, for it is education that nur-tures the human resource of a nation. Hence, con-

stantly improving the education system is of key importance. Here are some suggestions in the same direction. Eliminate the divide:The difference between the rich andpoor should be eliminated by providing equally goodinfrastructure to both the classes. Besides, a commonsyllabus would also be a good idea.

One compulsory language: The language barrier is a majorchallenge for the people of India. Therefore, one languageshould be made compulsory all over India, which couldpreferably be English or Hindi or the mother tongue. Admissions under government control:In the private sec-tor as well as government sector, the admission processshould take place under the supervision of government, sothat there is no discrimination.Others: Some other measures that can be incorporated areregular checks by government officers in schools, a provisionwherein students can give feedback to teachers anonymouslyand well equipped science and computer labs.

Thank you, teachers

Amity Institute of ForensicSciences (AIFS) introduced aninnovative dramatics club with

an equally unique named called‘Nyaynaman’. The club recentlyperformed a play in which theypresented the journey of a student fromKindergarten to the professional world. It was a dedication to the teachers and

mentors at AIFS.The first scene depictedthe playful days of childhood, when life isfull of joy and fun. The next sceneportrayed the school life, where teachersteach their students to be honest. This wasfollowed by depiction of college days. The concluding scene showed howstudents step into professional world. Theplay conveyed the message that thissmooth transition is made possible onlywith the guidance of the teachers.G T

Ihad signed off from competitive hockey in theyear 1988, while still in Indian Army. It was onlyin the year 2009 that I once again picked up the

hockey stick to train the students of Amity Univer-sity, Noida. I don’t know whether it was the love forthe game or something else that propelled me to pickup the hockey stick once again and play for ASET,where I serve as a faculty. Putting aside the fact thatI was soon going to turn 67, it was with the permis-sion and blessings of Dr Balvinder Shukla, vicechancellor, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh, I de-cided to play the match, little realising that I did noteven have a proper hockey stick. This reminded me of Zafar Iqbal, Olympian and for-

mer captain of Indian Hockey team, who alsohappened to be an engineering graduate exAMU. I had been meeting him occasionally inthe past during hockey matches but more fre-quently in the recent past at Noida Golf Course.Once I told him that I need a hockey stick and hewas kind enough to send me one of his own hockeysticks immediately. I took to the field with last year’s Sangathan cham-pions- ASET on August 28, 2014 all set to playagainst Amity School of Physical Education andSports for the inaugural exhibition match. I happened to watch the firstepisode of Satyamev Jayate'sthird season that wasdedicated to sports. Intricatelycrafted and well presented, theepisode highlighted thetremendous potential of sportsto bring about a change thatIndia needs to awaken to. In

simple and small words, the show struck achord with its audience, that sport is not justabout winning medals, but more about buildingteam spirit and learning to take both victory andloss in the same stride. In a country like India where sports is alwaysconsidered secondary to education, I amprivileged to be a part of India’s largest privateeducational group that celebrates the birthdayof its Founder President as an annual sportsextravaganza– Sangathan. In a country wheremost parents allow their children to pursuesports only if they are able to excel inacademics. Sangathan is one event that displaysthe sport competencies of a youthful India.India boasts of many gold medallists such asAbhinav Bindra, Mary Kom, Geeta Kumari andBabita Kumari who rose to glory because oftheir love for the sport and to see the tricolourflutter with pride. This dream is shared by ourFounder President, Dr Ashok K. Chauhan, whohas dedicated his birthday celebrations to sportsin the form of Sangathan. The entire Amityfamily stands united to salute the spiritassociated with Sangathan.Sangathan celebrations have become grand witheach passing year, indicating that the process ofchange as envisaged by Founder President tomake India a superpower has begun and we allstand committed to realising it.G T

This year once again,Amitians displayedunparalleled sportsmanshipand camaraderie at Sangathanthat marked the birthday oftheir Founder President Dr Ashok K. Chauhan. The rise in the grandeur of thecelebrations, the enthusiasm

of participants and display of talent spread overtwo days fills me with pride and joy. It isheartening to see that Sangathan has todaymoved beyond the realms of being a meresporting tournament to an occasion, whereAmity titans from across the globe gather todemonstrate their sport skills and talents.I am happy to share that this year, hockey, thenational game of India was added to the bouquetof sport events conducted every year onSangathan. In a cricket crazy nation, thisinitiative will help popularise the sport.Sangathan may come across as a sporting eventto many, but this extravaganza is a test ofsporting excellence, organisational skills, camaraderie, teamwork, etc. While it is the sportsstars that lend the event its true shine, but thesuccess of the event rests on the shoulder of theorganisation committees which work silentlybehind the scenes, to cast a magical spell calledSangathan (Read Pg 6-7). It takes months ofpreparation and hard work to put together anevent of such grandeur. Amity is a hub of talentand Sangathan serves as a platform to nurturethat talent. From sports extravaganza to culturalperformances, it truly showcased Amity’sstrength and the spirit of togetherness. G T

With a large section of our societygroping with evils like poverty, canwe call India a developed country?

Abhishek MardaAIS Noida, VIII D

India is home to many millionaires, but does it imply that the country isreally heading forward on the path

of progress. It is quite common toencounter people sleeping on thefootpath, begging for alms on thestreets of Delhi. It hurts deeply to see asection of India’s population calling thestreets bustling with traffic their homeand fighting a losing battle againsthunger and poverty. Was this the picture of free India thatMahatma Gandhi had painted in hismind? If he would have been alivetoday the sight of little childrenwalking barefoot on the road andliving a life of misery would havemade his heart bleed. Here is what weall can do to walk unitedly towards abetter and progressive India.

Eradicating child labour Hundreds of children are rescued

every year from the clutches ofslavery. The only way to restore theirlost childhood is to explore theirtalents and help them tap theirpotential to the fullest for their ownbetterment. We should shower themwith love and words of encouragementso that they can gradually carve aniche for themselves in the society.

Empathising with the poorWe should not forget our not soprivileged brethren while marching onthe road of progress. The governmentshould open up more night shelters sothat people do not die of biting coldand scorching heat out in the open.Vocational training should be providedto them so that they can become selfemployed. Healthcare facilities shouldbe within the reach of the poor. Thehospitals should make medicalfacilities available to economicallyweaker section of the society atminimal cost. It is a matter of greatshame that every year hundreds of

people die of hunger and malnutrition,as many of us continue to waste food. The corporates as a part of the CSRinitiative should set up food bankswhere people can go and donate food. This will be a first step toward wipingoff hunger.

Fighting illiteracy The war against poverty would neverbe successful if we do not eradicateilliteracy from the face of the country. For that to happen one should follow

the philosophy of ‘Each one, teachone.’ We should donate books andstationery items that we no longer use. These books can illuminate someone’slife. Adult literacy programme shouldbe pursued at war footing if we wantresults to speak for themselves. The responsibility of making India abetter country does not wrest with thegovernment alone. It is our responsi-bility too. It is about time that all of usjoin hands to make this mission a greatsuccess.G T

Unravelling the travel industryPragya Kumar, HR head,Yatra.com in a candidconversation with SpoorthiRamesh, Amity Institute ofTravel & Tourism, speaks

about the success ofYatra travel portal and

challenges the travelindustry isencountering.

How is Yatra different from othertravel portals?

Yatra is definitely different fromother travel portals since weoffer an entire range of prod-

ucts. Some organisations offerholidays, some offer flight book-ings, some offer hotels, someoffer buses and car rental services,

but Yatra is one company which offers you all these products, all on

a single platter. Besides, our USP liesin making our travelers feel happy and

content.

In a world of cut-throat competition, howcan Yatra maintain the competitive edgeover others? In a service-based industry, customer serv-ice is what can help you survive and grow. The manner in which you interact with thecustomers, or offer services to them is whatmakes the difference.

What kind of growth do you anticipate intravel and hospitality industry in the nextdecade? The industry is rapidly growing and we hopeto see at least 50% growth in the comingyears. I am quite optimistic about it.

Yatra is also competing directly withairlines and hotels. What advantage doesit offer to its customers, other than justcost effectiveness? One can always book hotels and airlinesdirectly by logging on to their portal. ButYatra promises unparalleled advantages. Ifone directly books a ticket from the onlineportal of the airlines, he gets an onsite rate. But Yatra has partnership with a range ofairlines, so our online portal offers you thechoice to pick the best airline deals. Yatra

also provides a broader outlook on thingslike sightseeing places to visit, how to getto the holiday destination without anyhassle, places to eat, etc. That’s theadvantage of an online portal; it’s a one-stop destination for all the information youneed.

Is India’s low internet penetration rate aconcern? It actually is. There was a time when itactually bothered us. As a result ofadvancement of technology and efforts ofthe previous government we have betterinternet connectivity now. 2G and 3Gnetwork has proved to be a boon for India. And with the 4G on its way, we will have agreater internet penetration soon.

What is your advice to those who want towork in the tourism industry? It’s been almost three years now that I havebeen interviewing post graduate students. One thing I always feel is that they shouldnot take up a profession just for the sake ofit. In this profession we create happy people. At the same time students should not taketheir studies and academics lightly.G T

They are the backbone of Amityand no celebration at Amity iscomplete without their

unflinching support and hard work. It isthe results of their herculean efforts thatSangathan celebrations, with eachpassing year, have become moremagnificent. The onus of making thecelebrations more spectacular rests withthe Organising Committees. Smita Jain,GT Network, introduces the teams whichwork behind the scenes to makeSangathan a memorable extravaganza.

Sangathan celebrations areincomplete without the

scrumptious food packets prepared byAmity School of Hospitality (ASH)and who better to ensure that than theHospitality Committee!

What does Sangathan mean to you? Sangathan is an event which goes along way in inculcating team spirit, camaraderie, perseverance, etc.

What special preparations did youmake for Sangathan this year? A grand event like this calls for strongcoordination and motivation. I feelimmense pride in acknowledging thatthe students of ASH were on their toesto ensure that the guests carried backpleasant and warm memories withthem.

Your birthday message for the

Founder President?I wish him luck, happiness and pros-perity today, tomorrow and beyond.(Dr Vaskar Sengupta, director, Amity

Sangathan is not abouttesting physical prowess

alone, it is also a test ofknowledge of sports andcurrent affairs too, and whobetter to do it than the QuizCommittee!

What does Sangathanmean to you? The term Sangathansignifies harmony ofmind, body and soul.

How difficult or easy it is

to put up a grand show likethis?Amitians are blessed with therare attribute of turning evenimpossible into possible. Thelove for our respected FounderPresident is so overpoweringthat people turn up on their ownto lend a helping hand.

Do you think Sangathanteaches lessons ofcamaraderie?Sangathan instills in everyAmitian a sense of pride and be-

longingness. It teaches us towork as a team, keeping asidepersonal interests.

Your birthday message for theFounder President? On this occasion, I pray to Godto shower honourable FounderPresident with a long life so thathe can contribute more for themankind.(Dr Arun Sacher, director,Amity International BusinessSchool was the head of OfflineQuiz Committee)

G T

Without a sound committee to takecare of the finances, it is very

difficult to put up a mega event likeSangathan.

What does Sangathan meanto you? Sangathan means camaraderie, friendship and working towardsa common goal. It also meansfriendship and lifelong loyaltyto Amity and our belovedFounder President.

How difficult or easy it is toput up a grand show like this? It is not easy to prepare for agrand ceremony like this. Butthis challenge has a uniquepleasure associated with it. Eachyear, we raise the bar of the

celebrations by setting a newbenchmark. It is our earnest effort

to make Sangathan celebrations granderthan previous years.

Any special memories associated withSangathan? It gives me immense pride to acknowledgethat I have been associated with Sangathanfrom the time of its inception-1999. It wascelebrated as a ‘Sports Day’ then and now,it has acquired the grandeur of a miniOlympics.

Your birthday message for the FounderPresident? It has been the result of his concerted ef-forts that we can boastfully say that we area part of Amity. He has given us the mostprecious gift of our lives ‘Amity’. I, alongwith every Amitian, pray to God to blesshim with success and good health.

Sangathan 2014is brought to you by...

Planning a grand salute for agrand man: Lt Gen B K Bopanna

What makes the Sangathancelebrations more grand and

popular is the march-past by various Amitydepartments. The synchronised steps of thestudents and the tunes of harmony beltedout by the army band, which instill a senseof pride in every Amitian is the result ofpainstaking efforts of the Army Band andthe March-Past Committee.

What does Sangathan mean to you? Sangathan is an extraordinarily well-organised sports extravaganza involvingthousands of students from all the Amity

Universities. The games are conducted inthe true spirit of the guidelines enshrinedin the National Youth Policy for giving afillip to outdoor activities and sports.

Any special memories associated withSangathan?I have been associated with Sangathansince 2005. For the first time, I brought theBrass Band from the army to add colour tothe events, and also lined up a contingentof young cadets from the Amity IndianMilitary College to present a ‘Guard ofHonour’ to the Founder President. Over a

hundred marching contingents take part inthe march-past and their numbers aresteadily growing. Doesn’t it call for entryinto the Guinness Book of World Records!

Your birthday message for the FounderPresident? All ranks of Amity Indian MilitaryEducation Society and I, wish Sir goodhealth, happiness and success on hisbirthday. May all his dreams come true! (Lt Gen B K Bopanna, DG, Amity IndianMilitary Education Society was the head ofArmy Band and March Past Committee)

Pulling off a grand ceremony is noordinary feat and winning a shiny

medallion isn’t either. The onus ofgiving away the prestigious trophiesand medals lies on the shoulders ofAwards, Medals & TrophiesCommittee.

What does Sangathan mean to you? Sangathan to me, is much more than asports extravaganza. It is an event thatcelebrates the spirit of teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship.

What special preparations did youmake for Sangathan 2014?I was the Chief Coordinator for prizedistribution. My team and I made every

possible effort to ensure that theceremony went off smoothly.

How difficult or easy it is to put up agrand show like this?

It is a herculean task to pull off a grandshow which witnesses participation ofover 40,000 people. It is an uphill taskto ensure distribution of over 2000medals and 150 trophies in an openground. But we Amitians are taught toface any challenge bravely, so everychallenge looks minuscule to us.

Your birthday message for Sir?I pray to God to shower His blessingsupon the Founder President. May Hebless him with good health, peace andhappiness in all his endeavours!(Dr Sanjeev Bansal, director, AmityBusiness School, was the head ofAwards, Medals & TrophiesCommittee)

What does Sangathan mean to you? Sangathan is an event that gives you an

opportunity to nurture physical fitness andsports competencies in the youth.

What was new in this Sangathan? For the first time since its inception, theundergraduate students of AUUPparticipated in the cultural gala. This year’sinauguration ceremony saw a hockeymatch being played.

How difficult or easy it is to put up agrand show like this? The logistics involved in Sangathan aremind boggling. It calls for extensivecooperation between all institutes.

The last stand, the mark of horizon, is it success in disguise? The dingy tunnels, the solemn sunset,is it failure or malice? When future walks forth,it is the shadow of fallacy that walks behind.

We cannot seize the failure, but could strive to tame our minds, the stifling victory, the warmth of sun, is it our dwindling inception? The stark befall, the dull, hazy moon,is it our false perception? When defeats are inflicted upon us,our soul aspires but relents. The moment we lose our hopes,it embarks our journey to the end.G T

Moonlight Sonata

Ritwik Kumar, AIS Noida, XII

Beethoven’s hands trembled withanticipation and his lower lipquivered. He was too close to

giving up.His stroll turned into a trot as he hurrieddown an empty field, gazing at the inkedsky as rain drops lashed the earth withfury. His mind was constantly racingagainst time. His hands started movingup and down, as if he was playing animaginary violin. His heartbeat quickened as herecognised the street lamp in front of theshack. He pushed the door open andimmediately slammed it back. Glancingat the dreary interior of the shack, hepicked up his violin and played. The

tremble in his hand gradually reducedand he stopped shivering. His body seemed to relax as he playedthe violin and his anticipation quelled. His confidence rose; after all he was aborn musician, a true artist. The symphony was divine, it seemed asthough nature itself had held her breathto listen to this great man play. His eyesclosed, turning into a crescent redmoon. His body gleamed as themoonlight caressed his pale skin, givinghim a supernatural effect. He was no

longer a man; he was amessenger of God. The

world seemed like a hugevoid, and his was the only soul. His

violin seemed to be telling a tale— a tale that started on a

rainy night. The melody was soft as

satin, but the messagewas aggressive. His

fingers ran down thestrings, as thoughthe instrument was

a part of him. The symphony grew louder and louder, reducing his worry. His fingers dancedon the violin, eager to play a final noteon the instrument, and completing thevery final aspect of his legendary piece. The wind blew gently as he struck thefinal, as though singing with joy, themusic of God. Beethoven seemed lost inhis thoughts, as he turned back to stare atthe sole audience to the symphony, aman sitting in an armchair bearing anexpression of pure shock on his face. With a half smile on his face, he quietlywalked out of the room. At last,Moonlight Sonata was born.G T

Neptuneresided in the last orbit and it took him165 years to complete one revolutionaround the sun. That is why it could not

their orbits to make room for Neptune.Venus, which moved nearer to sun startedmelting, while Earth which moved awayfrom the sun, started freezing. This madeall the planets and living beings residingon Earth complain to the sun aboutNeptune’s mischief. The Sun, head of thefamily, scolded Neptune and asked himto return to his own orbit. And to solve Neptune’s problem the Sunpromised him new friends and company. This is how Neptune got 13 moons and 6rings. Neptune was elated and all becamefine in the happy solar family.G T
