T h e G e r a l d i n e Patchworkers are celebrating their 30th year together. Few remain from the original group founded in the 1980s, but the focus of giving to those in need endures.

The patchworkers have a legacy of quilting for various fundraisers, community organisations and people who have suffered a crisis and require assistance. upcoming plans include a group quilt for sale with proceeds going towards the 2016 Relay for Life. Another quilt is underway for raffling off at Arts and Plants with a portion of the proceeds to go towards a community organisation or person in need. “We spend a lot of time quilting for people who are in need whether it be because their house burnt down or they’ve suffered another tragedy,” says Barbara McFarlane, an experienced member of the group. Occasionally the patchworkers will have an emergency-quilt day, and focus their efforts on quilting for emergencies such as house fires, where gifting a quilt provides not only practical but also emotional comfort.

It’s not all work; the members enjoy being in the company of and gathering advice from other patchworkers and sewers, and just “generally have a good time together,” says Barbara. When they are not making gifts for those in need the patchworkers use their weekly gatherings to work on personal and group projects. “It’s just nice to get together, have a bit of lunch and help each other out with whatever we’re working on,” says Barbara. Thursday meetings usually consist of a group discussion, show and tell of whatever members are currently creating, shared lunch and time to

focus on their creations. Several members have made quilts entered in shows around New Zealand, some even being included in the New Zealand Quilter magazine. Members also participate in an annual themed challenge. This year the theme is On the Road Where you Live.

The group members meet on Tuesdays (10am at the St John Ambulance rooms) and Thursdays (7pm at the Geraldine high School textiles room) to quilt and create together. Joanne Mitchell, convener of the group, says they are happy to teach patchworking to anybody interested. “We love to share what we know with people,” says Joanne. The Geraldine Patchworkers welcome all new members to both the day and night meetings. For more information, contact Joanne Mitchell on 693 8488.

Geraldine’s Kane Tarres has been drumming for a long time.

“Since I was 20... I was a manager for a Jimi hendrix covers band and the drummer wasn’t turning up, so I learned drums very quickly. I was touring with them, then with originals bands.” Kane has “been in bands that have supported Radiohead, uB40, Pseudo echo and Johnny Diesel”.

he has “played percussion with Pounamu and Salmonella Dub, off and on, played congas with various jazz bands and played with [local bands] Boru and Gecko Junior, now called Free Range Slaves”.

Kane has also taught percussion “at many schools, and taught tribal drumming – from many parts of the world – and singing”.

Now, he is offering lessons in

“hand drums will be provided for the course. They’ll also be available to buy; they’re all handmade by me. I’ve been making drums since 1995. I got a grant; I was using deerskin and recycled PVC piping for the shells. I glue on fabric, then wet the de-haired skins, then tie them on.”

Drummin’ Funky Rhythms begins next week and runs for six weeks on Tuesdays, 7.30-8.30pm. Casual attendance is also welcome.

For more information, call Kane on 693 7248 or 027 480 4748 or go to the Facebook page for Geraldine Academy of Performance and Arts.

“healing and meditation is a journey. It can be used alongside the treatments from your doctor. Many are now recommending yoga and meditation to their patients. There are lots of different ways of bringing it in,” she says.

The classes start on 4 May and will be held at the Geraldine Academy for six weeks, from 5.15-6.15pm. For more information contact Kerrylea on 022 309 2410.

holistic therapist Kerrylea Reihana. Photo: Fiona Carmichael.

A former local health shop owner, Kerrylea (Kerry) Reihana, is coming back to Geraldine this autumn to teach Geraldine residents meditation techniques for “calming the mind and finding balance”.

Kerry is excited about the classes and says she’s looking forward to taking the beginners’ class. She says she has used spiritual healing and meditation to treat people of all ages from babies to the elderly, including people with sleeping problems and those needing help with a range of emotional, physical and psychological issues.

“Meditation is a discipline [which brings about] spiritual growth and helps people find balance, peace and calm and focus, no matter what’s going on in their lives. It’s about being in the now,” she says.

The busy mum says she found meditation and spiritual healing through her own ill health.

“I wasn’t finding the answers from my doctor so I started looking at alternatives. A series of natural acupuncture was amazing – it took me down a whole new pathway. I saw the benefits [of meditation and spiritual healing] and wanted to share those benefits with other people,” she explains.

Kerry owned the essence of Life health store opposite the Westpac Bank on Talbot Street from about 2004 until 2011 and has a diploma in Natural Spiritual healing from the Self Realisation Meditation healing Centre in Christchurch. She says the diploma was a three-year course and the final exam took place in england over a week.

Kerry says meditation can help reduce stress, improve focus, improve health, relieve pain and tension, and bring peace and calm into people’s lives.

“We are all a lot busier and have a lot more stimulation these days, particularly mums. It used to be more simplistic, more in the now for mums when they were just in the home. With the technical age and all the extra stimulation we often just need a breather, a way to calm our minds and find balance.”

The children in our household are buzzing as winter sport is about to launch. I, on the other hand, am bracing myself for the onslaught of grubby knees, filthy boots and the ongoing wail of, “Where’s my mouth guard?”

The nine-year-old has signed up for another season of rugby and hockey, while the seven-year-old states she is “playing hockey and choir.” I’m not sure the Kids Choir teacher Christopher Musgrave realises she considers it a sport, but I wish him luck.

It is at this time of year that a host of Geraldine parents, high school students and volunteers are preparing for the start of winter sport. They will be coaching, refereeing, managing and co-ordinating to make sport possible for our children. They will be motivated, enthusiastic and looking forward to a lot of fun. But, what about when sport across the country stops being fun, and the kids and volunteers are subject to comments and actions from the sideline that aren’t supportive or sporting?

having played one or two games of my chosen sport in the not-so-distant past, I’m confident that I know what I’m doing. however, even I felt rattled last year while refereeing a match between eight-year-old children when an irate father hurled abuse at me. What did his behaviour do for the children who were playing? how was it going to improve the game for his child? What sort of behaviour was he role modelling?

balance, calm, peace and focus through meditation classes

WHakaaro: Children’s sportAnd was it going to make other potential volunteers want to get off the sidelines and become involved in coaching or officiating, so this man’s child (and others like him) could participate in the game? The only positive factor is that this anonymous bully wasn’t from Geraldine and he wasn’t supporting Geraldine.

New signage is about to appear at our rugby grounds and good on them for encouraging positive behaviour:

reminding about their behaviour. The next time we are not happy about kids sport, maybe we need to stop and think. Perhaps we should remember what Thumper taught us in the childhood classic, Bambi: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.”

Please, let’s keep a positive culture humming on Geraldine’s sidelines this winter.

blood, platelet and plasma donations

Shantelle McLeod has been donating blood for about 10 years and has organised a blood collection in Geraldine today.

Shantelle and a group of her Facebook friends will also be getting their heads shaved at the Village Inn at 7.30pm tomorrow for Shave for a Cure, Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s signature fundraising event.

“Instead of shaving for money we are hoping people will give blood donations.”

Shantelle says NZ Blood have not collected in Geraldine since 2013. They will be collecting whole blood in Geraldine, but Shantelle is also hoping to create local awareness about platelet and plasma donations.

She says people can choose whether to donate whole blood or platelets and plasma, however platelets and plasma collection takes place in Christchurch.

“It takes a bit longer, but a donation of platelets or plasma treats about 12 more people than donations of whole blood.”

Shantelle explains that platelet donations are critical for treating patients with blood diseases and cancers such as leukaemia, and for controlling bleeding after cardiac surgery and trauma.

Many treatments use plasma donations including severe burns, liver and renal failure, chemotherapy and haemophilia. Plasma can also be useful to boost the immune system and to provide temporary protection against infections such as chickenpox, tetanus or hepatitis.

People with chronic anaemia, kidney failure, cancer and acute blood loss from trauma or surgery benefit from red blood cell transfusions.

The NZ Blood website says the transfusion of red blood cells must be done within 35 days of collection. “There’s always a demand for blood. There is no substitute as it can only come from another human.”

Shantelle grew up in Geraldine. She says donating blood is something she has always done and that her parents regularly donated blood as a way to give back to the community. Shantelle’s brother required plasma following surgery and a close friend has leukaemia.

“People think it doesn’t happen to them but it does. you never know when you’ll need it yourself and it’s a gift that we can give regularly to make a difference.”

NZ Blood says approximately 3,000 donations are needed each week to meet medical needs in New Zealand. Cancer patients use 22 per cent of blood products, accident victims 18 per cent and mothers and babies 7 per cent.

The Geraldine blood collection is on today, Thursday 23 Aprilat the Geraldine high School between 10.30am and 3.30pm. Phone 0800 GIVe BLOOD (0800 448 325) to book or download the free mobile phone app from www.nzblood.co.nz. The Shave takes place at the Village Inn, this Friday at 7.30pm.

of toasted almonds to nibble on as you sit out on the deck and enjoy the changing autumn colours.

~~~~~~~~~~Quince brandy
Wash and peel and grate your quince. Place the fruit, seeds and cores into a jar. Cover and leave for three days. They will turn dark in colour, but this is expected.
Squeeze all the juice from the quince into a measuring jug. Add cup for cup of both brandy and sugar. Now add one cinnamon quill and three cloves, and leave for six weeks. Sieve through muslin and store in sterilized bottles.
My other favourite way to cook quince involves quite a substantial amount of sugar, but it’s worth it. Australian food
It’s interesting to see old orchards as you drive around the district. Often the house is long gone, yet the orchard remains. Many gaps show where trees have died, and those still standing are clothed in lichen.
Despite little care and attention over the years, many of these spindly gems are laden with fruit. Fruit that tastes the way it should. As gnarly and imperfect as it looks, the flavour is there.
These old orchards often, though not always, include a quince tree, traditionally kept for making quince jelly. Some long-established suburban gardens have them too. In the autumn months you may see an old, forgotten quince loaded with exquisitely ancient-looking fruit.
I have mentioned the beauty of the quince blossom many times. It’s my absolute favourite. The lime-green of the leaf against delicate white petals is simply nature’s best work.
I’m happy to just have a bowl of the fruit on the kitchen counter, both to look at and for the smell. The Smyrna variety is a very good cultivar if you want to add a tree to your garden. The fruit are large, yellow when ripe and have a rich flavour and fragrance. They also store well, produce plenty of fruit, and most importantly they do not break up during cooking as other varieties do.
Many people aren’t sure what to do with quince. They’re really only edible after cooking, and aren’t a part of european New Zealanders’ heritage as they are for those from the Middle and Near east, where the fruit was highly prized by the Greeks and Romans. Paris awarded a “golden apple” to Aphrodite as a symbol of love, fertility and marriage.
~~~~~~~~~~A few years ago, I made this amber-coloured quince

brandy and it was such a hit that I now make it every year. It’s delicious served with dessert, or as an aperitif with a bowl

in good taste: a quince by any other nameguru Maggie Beer introduced many of us to quince in her first cookbook, Pheasant Farm. Passionate about food in general, Maggie spouted the magical words, “There is no end to the quince’s versatility,” opening the doors of our imagination and allowing us to think of quince as more than just a fruit. Often used in tagines in the Middle east, especially with lamb, quince can also be pickled - the perfect addition to a platter of sliced ham or grilled meats.

~~~~~~~~~~Pot-roasted quince
This recipe involves long, slow cooking, which ensures that the whole quince can be eaten, seeds and all. The quince changes in colour from yellow to ruby red (think autumn here). As the fruit stays whole during cooking (Please note: if you use the pineapple-shaped variety it may turn to mush. Still tasty, but mush), it can be frozen in its syrup and brought out in the middle of winter as a delicious, instant dessert.
6 medium-sized quince, picked with a stem and a leaf still attached, if possible 4 cups of sugar and the juice of 3 lemons.
Rub the soft fuzz from the fruit, wash each one and position in a heavy-based pan in one layer, packing them tightly together. Add the sugar and 1.5 litres of water. Boil at a fairly high temperature until a jelly starts to form. Reduce the heat (use a simmer mat if you have one, or turn to very low) and continue cooking for up to 5 hours. Turn the quince at least 4 times during cooking to ensure they are a rich red colour all over. Add the lemon juice during the last stage of cooking to cut the sweetness. These are amazing served with some of the cooking jelly and some softly whipped unsweetened cream, or crème fraîche.
