When this gazette reaches your home we will be in the final week of Term 2. Parent Teacher Interviews Parent Teacher interviews for Years 7 and 8 were held last week in the school hall. I was very gratified by the number of parents who took the opportunity to chat with staff regarding their daughters’ progress across their subjects. The general impression I have gained from the staff present was that parents, especially Year 7, were full of praise for the way their daughter’s teachers had engaged their students and the success of the transition programs we have at St George. They universally expressed that their daughters were happy and loving the St George experience. I was able to pass on this positive feedback to teachers and office staff. Parent Teacher interviews for Years 9 and 10 are scheduled for Wednesday 17 July from 4pm 7pm in the school hall. Your daughter should book an appointment time with her teacher. As is our usual practice Mandarin and Cantonese speaking interpreters will be available for parents to use if they desire. These can be booked when your daughter makes her appointment. Year 7 Satisfaction Surveys Earlier this year the Year 7 Satisfaction Survey was sent to Year 7 parents; unfortunately the response was not as good as expected. So I have re issued the survey with the Year 7 reports with the expectation that those parents who did not complete the first one will take time to complete the survey. Completed surveys should be returned to the front office as soon as possible. The school uses the results of the survey to evaluate and improve our programs and processes where necessary. InspiredOn Wednesday 26 June we will be “Inspired” by the creative design talents of our girls. This is our tenth annual “Inspiredevening and I am sure it will be as spectacular as we have come to expect. Our students will parade their creative textile designs and we will once again have a creative design challenge to judge. We will also have dance and drama performances so the evening promises to be once again a highlight of our Term 2 calendar. The evening will be held in the school hall commencing at 6.30pm. The invitation is extended to family members only. We do ask that parents collect their daughters promptly at the conclusion of the evening. Thanks must go to the TAS faculty for organising this highlight of the school calendar and especially to Miss Leto who is the organiser of this year’s event.

DDrraammaa EEvveenniinngg aa GGrreeaatt SSuucccceessss!! A drama performance evening was held in the school hall on 19 June and was a wonderful evening showcasing the incredible talents of our drama students. Both in individual and group performances students entertained, challenged and moved the audience. Year 12 students were outstanding and this bodes well for their HSC individual projects. Congratulations to Ms Wright for fostering the dramatic talents of our students and thanks to all teachers, especially Mr Moroney who operated the music and sound, for their assistance with the evening.

YYeeaarr 1122 TTrriiaall HHSSCC The Year 12 Trial HSC commences the end of week 2 term 3. I wish all of Year 12 the best for the Trial HSC exams. Students should make sure that they are familiar with the assessment procedures.

AApppplliiccaattiioonn ffoorr PPllaacceemmeenntt iinn YYeeaarrss 88--1122 22001144 Each year a small number of vacancies may occur in Years 8-12. Students who wish to apply for placement on waiting lists should collect an application form from the school. The Selective Schools Unit Application Form as well as the St George Girls High School Application Form should be filled in when applying. The forms can also be downloaded from the school’s website. Please note that applications are due back at the school by 3pm on the 30 July. No late applications will be accepted. There is a non-refundable fee of $50.00 to cover the administrative costs of processing each application. Each application will be assessed by a panel including myself, the Deputy Principal in charge of each year and a parent representative.

BBuuiillddiinngg FFuunndd –– TTaaxx DDeedduuccttiibbllee The St George Girls High School Building Fund was established in 2002. This is a fund solely for the acquisition, construction or maintenance of our school buildings. Contributing to this fund can be attractive to parents as donations are tax deductible. Catherine Bao, Belinda Goh, Louise Lin and Winnie Zhao will be presented with their certificates by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales on the grounds of Government House on 31 July. Congratulations must also go to Ms Thodey for her outstanding effort in getting these students to this level.

Christiane Haitidis of Year 9 has successfully auditioned for the 2013 NSW Drama Ensemble. The ensemble is a selected group of gifted and talented actors from Year 9 who will be mentored by specialist tutors from the performing arts industry as well as performing at events thoughout the year. Congratulations to Veronica Tsang who has progressed to the finals of the 2013 Sutherland Shire and St George Youth Music Awards in both Performance and Composition. We wish her all the best for the finals on 28 June.

Congratulations to Kelly Sun of Year 8 who was an award recipient in the Mosman Youth Art Prize for her work entitled “The Peacock”.

WWiinntteerr UUnniiffoorrmm RReemmiinnddeerr In the last gazette, I published the school’s winter uniform requirements. It has come to my attention that there have been some non-uniform items of clothing being worn by students to school. Items such as beanies, skivvies and non-regulation school trousers are not part of the winter school uniform. All uniform items must be purchased from the School Uniform Shop. I encourage parents to ensure that their daughters take pride in the school by wearing correct uniform at all times.

CCoonnggrraattuullaattiioonnss I would like to congratulate the following students for achieving Gold Certificates indicating that they have received thirty Merit and/or Participation Certificates: Laurie Mac of Year 11. YYeeaarr 1122 aanndd tthhee TTrriiaall HHSSCC ll Year 12 students should be planning to make effective use of the coming holidays to revise their work for the Trial HSC examinations which

commence at the end of Week 2. It is important that the girls work in a methodical way which gives them set work time and set leisure time. It is far better to set a realistic, achievable study timetable and keep to it than develop an overambitious one which cannot be fulfilled. Study should be punctuated by frequent breaks and students should, at the end of each session, tell themselves (or anyone else they can find) what they have learnt about in the session. This helps clarify what has been absorbed and what has not. Exercise is essential throughout all study periods. Many girls make the mistake of giving up sport as part of their drive for success. Maintaining sport and exercise or developing an exercise habit is very helpful in developing a sense of well being. Having a break from study and going for a walk is very therapeutic. Students should have a set study space which is associated with work. When they are in the space they are studying. When they are not they are at leisure. Short bursts of total focus on study are much better than extended periods of semi-focus or desultory effort. If a student is ill and unable to attend an exam she must phone in to school, get a medical certificate and return to school as soon as the certificate expires prepared to catch up on missed exams.

FFaarreewweellll This will be my last deputy’s report as I retire at the end of the term. Teaching at St George Girls has been the high point of my career. The privilege of working with such talented girls has been deeply rewarding. I carry away many delightful memories and will continue to follow with great interest the school’s fortunes in the years to come. Mr Morris

n Friday, 14th of June, Year 11 Textiles and

Design students went on an excursion to see the 2013 Texstyle, HSC Major Work exhibition

at the annual Craft and Quilt fair at Darling Harbour. Students were able to see the top 50 HSC Major works from 2012 which all achieved full marks, including two student’s works from our own school; Kayla Castle and Isabelle Martin. Students were able to gain an insight into the requirements of the Major Textile Project practical and portfolio work and were inspired by the variety of decorative techniques incorporated into each textile item. The girls were also able to see the amazing quilt exhibition, workshops and demonstrations and the many textile stores selling a variety of new and exciting textile products.

The Year 11 Textiles and Design class also attended a seminar at the National Australian Maritime Museum on the History of Swimwear. It was a highly informative session, where students were able to study a variety of swimwear garments hands-on, from the 1900’s to today. They were also able to interact with a touch screen illustrating the changes in swimwear over time and were given a tour of the current exhibition ‘Watermarks’. It was a highly valuable day which will greatly assist the girls in their HSC course next year.

PPaappeerr RReeccyycclliinngg pproximately 40 students regularly participate in the paper recycling on Tuesdays

at lunchtime. Any student who wishes to participate may join at any time. Just turn up first half of lunch on Tuesdays in room 5 or 6 depending on room availability. Every five weeks of participation will earn a school service award. Thank you to Melanie Tran and Marlene Manks of Year 11 who manage the weekly organisation.

GGaarrddeenniinngg CClluubb Elicia Lim of Year 11 has been very busy organising approximately 15 regular students with a variety of gardening experiences on Wednesday and Friday lunchtime. Any student

who wishes to join is most welcome. Just meet Elicia at the food labs at the start of lunch on Wednesday and Fridays or speak to Mrs Gay who is located in the TAS department. The latest project, apart from maintaining the veggie and herb garden, has been to pick the chillies grown here at school, dry them in the TAS food dryer and bag them. The label was designed by the students involved and with a recipe included to encourage people to cook with chillies. All reports indicate that the chillies are of excellent quality.

The last of the tomatoes were picked with the students taking home what they had grown. Also Mr Morrison once again proved that he can not only teach languages but produce top quality tomato and chilli relish!

WWoorrmm FFaarrmm Thirty to forty students are rostered for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday to manage the three thriving worm farms. Any student who wishes to join the rosters, even on a Wednesday, for terms 3 and 4 please see Mrs Duffy in the Science staffroom.

EEnnvviirroo CClluubb SSttaallll A big thank you to the Year 11 and 12 students who managed the Enviro Club stall at the Year 11 and 12 parent teacher night as well as the Year 7 and 8 parent teacher night. Stainless steel water bottles, bamboo toothbrushes, worm farm fertiliser and dried chillies were sold. A total of approximately $430 worth of goods were sold. All profit goes towards Enviro Club projects. Thank you to all parents who supported the students and their efforts.

These students not only worked with the primary teachers running various workshops for the primary students they also acted as facilitators and ran their own workshops relating to waste management, worm farms and sponsoring koalas. The staff at Carlton South and the National Parks Environment Centre commented on the professional manner in which the girls conducted all activities and that the day would not have been the success it was without their help.

SSyyddnneeyy GGiirrllss HHiigghh SScchhooooll Lisa Poon and Marlene Manks of Year 11 along with Cheryl Anthony and Taciane Jondral of Year 10 conducted four workshops relating to recycling T-shirts into head bands and bracelets with all of the Year 7 students at Sydney Girls High School as part of their very first Green Day. The workshops were a great success. FANTASTIC! “Professionally conducted” was the feedback from staff and visitors from Sydney Girls High School. Our students showed great initiative in facilitating and organising the entire workshop. Congratulations to all four students and especially Lisa Poon who managed and facilitated all four students in the preparation for the day.

GGrreeeenn SSccrreeeennss Amelia Mertha, Ellie Stamatelatos of Year 12 and Scarlet Huang and Fiona Lee of Year 11 participated in a video conference as 1 of 2 schools presenting at the Green Screens. ur Annual Reunion Luncheon was held on Saturday 4 May, in the Macquarie Room at Mortdale RSL Club. The St Georgians’ reunion

is a little different from others, as we invite all ex-students and teachers to attend. This year saw our first in a new venue, and the room had a lovely ambiance that helped create another successful day. Numbers were a little down on average, with only 77 attendees. Their years at St George ranged from girls who began high school in 1934, to those who left in 1991. Quite a range! Our thanks go to the Principal, Ms Knott, as well as Captain Michelle Tsang; who spoke to us about St George today. This year we had the pleasure of listening to the school’s string quartet, and we thank Yoshni Chandra, Scientia Foo, Suzi Kim and Kay Xie for their delightful performance. We heartily appreciate all these women for taking time out of their weekends to entertain us. The St Georgians meet in Room 5, at 7:00pm on the fourth Thursday of each month during school terms. Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, 27 June 2013. Our following meeting, on 25 July, will be our Annual General Meeting, to which all are invited.
