All Star Quilters’ Guild -Where everyone can shine!

July's Featured Quilter is Linda Wilson. You know her as Membership Chair for the Guild...perhaps she will draw your lucky ticket this month! Linda was born in Prescott, AZ where her father worked for the V.A. From there they moved with his job to Los Angeles, Livermore and various other cities in California until 1968 when she and her husband moved to Pensacola where he went through flight training with the Navy. They've been in Florida since 1979, but also spent time in Fresno, Eureka, Pleasanton (CA), Pensacola (twice), Corpus Christi (TX) and Newport (RI). Ah, the life of the Navy---I am sure others among us can relate.

Linda has been quilting since 2003. Her paternal grandmother was a seamstress and a quilter and Linda has a beautiful Spider Web quilt that was made by that grandmother for her parents when they married in 1937. It is completely hand-pieced and quilted. She used it on her bed when she was a child but now she treats it as the precious heirloom that it is. Linda also has other needlework from her grandmother. She sewed for her own daughters when they were little until they decided homemade clothes weren't "cool". She had always wanted to learn to quilt and after she retired from full-time work in 2002 she learned of a quilting class that Gay Montgomery was teaching at FCCJ. She signed up for the class and, like many of us, was hooked!

A member of All Stars since 2007 or 2008, Linda enjoys being Membership Chair because it has helped her really get to know the members. She has also been instrumental in planning and executing the Annual Retreat for several years.

When asked what she particularly likes about the guild, Linda responds that she likes the feeling of welcome that she has had since she first joined. She says that everyone is so friendly and willing to share ideas and knowledge and is generous with their contributions of quilts to the Guild's community outreach projects. With so many talented people in the guild, Linda enjoys Sew and Tell and the UFO's. She likes the guest speakers who share their talent and knowledge, and also the classes where new techniques are taught--she is looking forward to Starr's parasol class in August.

Linda enjoys making traditional pieced quilts and appliqué quilting. She has done some paper-piecing, but it's not her favorite method. Two of her quilts have been shown at QuiltFest--no awards, but she has found the judge's comments very helpful. In addition to quilting, Linda enjoys needlework such as crewel & counted cross stitch, reading, music, gardening, and travel. She retired from Blue Cross / Blue Shield after 22 years with them, working in HMO development, product management, and marketing. With their support she earned her BS in Business / Marketing in 1994 --- 34 years after High School --- quite an accomplishment. Linda has two daughters: Katie (lives in St. Pete and is mother to Linda's grandchildren Jeff, Emily, and Tommy. Jeff (and wife Renee) are the parents of her great-granddaughter, Haley Lynn (age 6). Emily (and partner Rock) have great-granddaughter Yanna Rose. Linda's other daughter Sarah (and her husband Michael) live in Pittsburgh in a 200 year old farmhouse that is on the last two acres of the 260-acre farm settled by her father's family in 1770. They have a huge garden every year and Linda is a lucky recipient of their homemade jam, pickles, and salsa.

Here’s a surprising factoid about Linda--she once had a ride in the Goodyear Blimp! Come to the meeting to hear the rest of that story! Congratulations to Linda, our July Featured Quilter.

Applique Group

For those that are new to the guild, a group of us gather around 1:00 after the general meeting to practice the art of hand applique. Anyone can attend or volunteer to share their technique with the group. Bring your project and join us for some good chat and project time.

As most of you know, my plate is overflowing. I have more to do than I will ever get done in a lifetime. For that reason I am looking for someone to take over the applique group. It is not a hard job and is very rewarding. If you are interested please see me and let’s talk.

Betty Ann Agnew

Bits and Pieces

Guess who won “Honorable Mention” for her civil war quilt at the Omaha Quilt Show – our own Sharon Moran. Now she needs to enter it in QuiltFest and win another prize. Great Job Sharon. We are soooooo proud of you.

While staying in Maggie Valley North Carolina I just had to take my new Granddaughter to a quilt shop. You know, get her started early while her Mother was at Annual Conference. After all, that is why I was there – to babysit (i.e., take her to quilt shops). Anyway, I found one on the main street going through Maggie Valley – Quilters Quarters Quilt Shop. What a great shop with a wide variety of quilting fabric, accessories, and even classes (if you are there long enough). They were so helpful and nice. I recommend that if you are in the area – stop by and check this wonderful quilt shop (I went there 3 times in one week). Quilters Quarters – 1510 Dellwood Rd. – Waynesville, NC. – www.quiltersquartersnc.com

Betty Ann Agnew PS – I bought fabric for a quilt - for my Granddaughter – of course.

All Stars would like to honor two or our members who go above and beyond in their contributions to the welfare of the guild. Who are these deserving members? Shh, it's a secret. Here is the scoop. Please make two Rail Fence blocks-- instructions are given at the end of this article. Then two quilt tops will be assembled and given to the honorees at the January Guild meeting. Instructions: Please make two of these blocks. You can make extra blocks, if you like. Just don't sign the extra blocks. From dark fabric: Cut two pieces 2" x 5". From light fabric: Cut one piece 2" x 5". Sew the pieces long sides together, dark- light- dark. Sign the light piece with a Pigma Pen, remembering not to write in the 1/4" seam allowance of your light piece. No Pigma Pen? When you bring your block to the Guild

Page 5: The Gazette - orgsites.com 2014 Page 1 of 19 The Gazette All Star Quilters’ Guild

July 2014

meeting, there will be a Pigma Pen to use. (Hint: It is easier to write on fabric if you press a small piece of freezer paper to the back of the fabric.)

I will be seated at a table in the back of the room at the Guild meeting to receive your completed blocks. Please bring them to the July, August, or September meeting. Thank you in advance for you part in honoring two of the Stars of the All Stars. Here is a picture of a finished block.

Community Service

As I am writing this, I cannot believe we are in the last half of 2014. We just finished our second quarter food bank drive in June. The volunteers at the food bank were very happy to see us with a car full of donations. As we were unloading they were telling us this is the time of year they run out of everything. Donations do not come in on a regular basis when there is not a major holiday. The surplus they had from Christmas and Easter get used this time of year. If you have extras in your pantry or you find good buys at the store, the food bank would be very happy for you to drop it off any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Don’t forget our guild will be collecting food and paper products again in September.

Elaine and I are so thrilled each meeting to see the how many community service quilts our members have finished. The quilts are beautiful. Our guild has certainly stepped up to the plate for community service this year. We thank you, but the recipients of these beautiful works of love will remember these gifts for the rest of their lives. It is very hard to imagine, but for some children the quilt they are given is one of the few things they can call their own. That is why ALL quilts we donate must have a label. If you are in need of labels for your community service quilts, stop by our table we have a fresh supply, thanks to a WONDERFUL donor.

We are still looking for several people interested in doing community service in 2015. If you are interested and would like to see what it is all about, come join Elaine and me for a few meetings and quilt “deliveries”. We are looking forward to seeing you about 9:25 at the next meeting.

Education

When I sign up for a class, I make the decision before hand – is this a class where I want to finish a project or is this a class where I want to learn the technique for the future?

Learn the technique for a future quilt; no hurry to complete a quilt so I don’t buy fabric for the class, just use something in my stash.

I want to actually finish a quilt; I buy fabric and plan to finish the quilt within a few weeks of class.

Sometimes a technique class turned into such fun I made a quilt, as was the case with Vicki’s “perfect circles” class. I couldn’t stop myself!

We had some beautiful projects from this class! I know I’ll do another one, as this one with snowflakes will go to my daughter, who moved to Charlotte!

The next will go much faster with what I learned: cut shallow curves so the bias strips go on more easily; keep the pieces in order; if I don’t have the 2-sided fusible, press these pieces onto the fusible side and spray baste the backing; when sewing on the bias strips, place the raw edges right on, or just before the curve to make sure they will be covered; and when top stitching, stay very close to the edge of the strip.

to Pris Roehm and Judy Cwalina, who will be helping Bettye from time to time with

sign-up duties at the Hospitality table, in preparation for taking on that role in 2015.

Ruthy’s excitement of her special art techniques was quite apparent! She demonstrated the use of fabric ink with stencils, brushes, erasers, ink pads and spray bottles. Marbleizing fabrics with shaving cream was probably the hit of the day, but our imaginations were expanded by ideas of embellishing commercial fabric by overlaying stencils to create patterns and for making appliques.

Lynn, from Country Crossroads will be teaching this gorgeous pattern designed by Vivienne Smith http://willowbrookquilts.com/patterns/pieced-quilts. We have a full class, but you can add your name to the waiting list. We already have requests for another class and hope Lynn is willing, when she’s finished with us first timers!! This is an Intermediate skill level. The size of this entire quilt is 50” x 50”, however, we will be constructing four blocks, to just learn the technique. If you already love the way this looks, and want to buy enough for the whole quilt, refer to the fabric requirements scanned from the pattern back, that is below. For the image on the right, Lynn feels that 4-6 Fat quarters will be sufficient, plus 1 ¼ yd. of background fabric. The finished size of these will be about 23” square. For the Asian look, choose 2 FQ that will not be cut up…..your motif will be about 8-9” square, plus 3 FQ to coordinate and cut up into 4 pieces for the other squares .Bring a few and make your final choices in

class! For framing the blocks, Lynn used the same print for all 4 of her Asian block strips (about 2 ¼”)....and a different one for the center. If you want to frame it the way Lynn did, you will also need these

Page 8: The Gazette - orgsites.com 2014 Page 1 of 19 The Gazette All Star Quilters’ Guild

July 2014

strips that coordinate with the background. Be as creative as you like!

Fabric suggestions are Batiks, small florals, or Asian fabrics. For the sample on the left, Lynn used the fantastic “Artisan Spirit” from Northcott that she has in her store.

A template is included that will need to be prepared. If you don’t have any, Lynn will be bringing large sheets of the template plastic ($1.75), and will show us how to prepare it for the project.

TAKE NOTE:

Keep in mind that Country Crossroads has a "Fabric Stashers" membership. For $25/yr (from the date you join), you get a 20% discount on all regular priced bolted fabric –(min. 1/2yd cut off the bolt) - ANYTIME...but does not include pre-cuts (i.e. fat q's, jellys, charms, etc...)

Finished Size of Quilt 50” X 50”

Supply List: Fabric Required –

Black fabric – 4 yards

Colored Fabrics – seven/eight – ½ yard each – graduating colored fabrics. Fabrics that change dark to light in one color or change gradually from one color to another color.

I used predominantly “Diawabo Selection for EE Scheneck Co.” for one of the quilts (they do about 6 different bright colors). For another quilt I used predominantly “Benetex Graduations”. Both of these fabrics start and finish with the same color across the straight of grain. This allows the thin strip of color to go around the block with the end color of the strip marrying into the same color as the start of the strip.

Binding – 1 yard - I used on of the graduating fabrics

Batting – 55” X 55” – low loft cotton

Backing and hanging sleeve – 3 ¼ yards

Thread for piecing – I used black

Thread for quilting – I used machine embroidery threads or machine metallic thread for the color fabrics and black for the black fabrics.

Tools:

Cutting mat

Rotary cutter

Don’t you just adore those cute little paper parasols in your “foo-foo” drinks that let you know which one is yours??? Well, you can make them for summer entertaining at http://www.marthastewart.com/269921/drink-parasols. AND now Starr will teach us how to construct a life-size one!!

Here is a (really!) interesting article about the history of umbrellas and how they are made http://www.madehow.com/Volume-1/Umbrella.html

Protect yourself from the sun with some tie-dyed cotton!

Imagine a walk in the rain with oilcloth, laminated cotton or waterproof fabric you see in the quilt shops!

Picture yours in Gators fabric, or lace/sheer nylon for bridal showers or cute ducks for baby showers!!

As soon as we reach 15-20 students for the class sign-up, we will place the order for the frames and patterns ($27 +

shipping), which takes about 2 weeks. You will also need 2 ½ yards of fabric, so start searching! If anyone is a member of the American Sewing Guild, we are eligible for a 15% discount on these materials at Nancy's Notions.

This workshop is designed to get you started doing free motion quilting and expose you to several styles of free motion filler patterns. You will complete samples with three different free-motion fills and an easy scroll pattern that is appropriate for sashings and borders. As with anything, the more you practice, the better you will become. Supplies

Sewing machine with darning or free-motion foot AND new needle in machine

Paper and pencil

All-purpose sewing thread in a color that contrasts with your quilt sandwiches

Small scissors or thread clips

2 quilt sandwiches (directions below)

Quilt Sandwiches You will need two 18” square quilt sandwiches. Your top and backing fabric should be a solid color (or reads as solid allover print). Muslin would also be appropriate. Please use cotton batting. Layer a top square, batting and backing square and either baste with quilting pins or spray baste. 505 spray works well for this.

Optional Recommended Supplies: Extra sewing machine needles Extension table for machine Quilters gloves

We break into groups which will move around, learning about a special skill or project. Usually there are 6 WONDERFUL volunteers demonstrating for a 10 minute time block, before we rotate. Contact us by EMAIL, preferably, if you have a unique technique or project to share!!! (I tend to forget who tells me what they would like to demo, so I’m better with it in writing, if possible!)

This is still a mystery for Sunnie, but she will design a fun class using scraps, the bane of our quilting studios!!!! So continue to throw your scraps into a basket in preparation! I bet this will be so popular that we will need more than one class, so be prepared, Sunnie!!

You might win a door prize! Wear a name tag and learn the names of your fellow class members.

Membership

There were 73 members and eight visitors at the June 16th Guild meeting. Visitors were David Sparks, Lisa Daniel, Bonita Bates, Teresa Johns (who was Carol Johns’ guest), Janan Bartell (who came with Diane Mangrum), Diane St. Laurent, Sue Selby, and Deb Peterson. David Sparks became a new member, and Deb Peterson, who has been a Guild member in the past, renewed her membership at the meeting. We hope our new members will enjoy their Guild experience and that the visitors will return and possibly become Guild members. Door prizes were won by Mary Hoskins and Bonita Bates.

Linda Wilson

The Guild is growing, and sometimes it is difficult for new members to get acquainted and to learn about Guild activities. We need Guild members to act as mentors to the new members. Mentors help new members feel welcome to the Guild and learn about Guild activities and traditions. Think about your first few Guild meetings and how helpful it would have been to have a member “show you around.” If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please call me at 272-3353, or sign up at the sign-in table at the July 21 Guild meeting.

Newsletter Editor

Anyone in the guild can submit an article to be published in our Gazette. Articles are due the Saturday BEFORE the monthly board meeting. See the calendar at the beginning of this newsletter for specific dates.

President – Star Notes from Sharon

Hope you all are having a great summer. I have Quilted 8 quilts so far with just 2 more to go. Also managed to make another QOV top. Hit a material sale $3 a yard even for batiks. I have been advised that your QOV material has arrived and Barb will be getting it to you soon. Have fun at Christmas in July - will miss being there with you all. See you in August.

Programs

Christmas in July is in 2 weeks. We will raffle a Christmas quilt specially make for the occasion. If you don’t have a ticket – there are a few left to be sold before the general meeting. Also we will have a “bag exchange”. Get a grocery bag (the brown kind), put 1 yard of quilt quality material in the bag. On a piece of paper, write a

Page 13: The Gazette - orgsites.com 2014 Page 1 of 19 The Gazette All Star Quilters’ Guild

July 2014

simple Christmas message to the recipient of your bag. Then in December we will get to see what you made with the material in the bag you take home. This will be a fun exchange, so get a bag, a Christmas message and a yard of material and have some fun. You don’t even have to decorate your bag – just add a Christmas message. Mary from Calico Station will be presenting the program – Christmas in July with Calico Station. I know it is hot here in Florida – but we are going to pretend it is snowing and have fun.

Betty Ann Agnew

There are seven people that still need to turn in their tickets for the drawing that will be held at the July general meeting. These need to be turned in as soon as possible. Also, before the meeting, I will have some tickets available for that last minute purchase of what could be the winning ticket!

Dorian Eng will be with us to demonstrate the ancient Japanese folk craft of “Temari” Balls. These are thread ball completed one thread at a time. They are beautiful and fascinating. This is a program you won’t want to miss. To see a sample Tamari Ball go to the photo site listed at the top of the newsletter and look in the “Program album”.

This November the program is titled “Thankful Trunk Show”. And I need everyone to participate. The first part of the program will be a trunk show from our very own members. The first 10 to volunteer will show one of their favorite quilts and tell us the story of that quilt. Every quilt has a story and we want to know the story of your favorite quilt. Contact Betty Ann Agnew ([email protected] or 303-8845) to volunteer for the trunk show.

The second part of the program is the “Thankful” part. As you arrive for the meeting, there will be a basket at the sign-in table. On the paper provided, write one thing you are thankful for. After the trunk show, as time permits, “Thankful” will be read.

What a great way to celebrate the Thanksgiving season.

Betty Ann Agnew (filling in for Pat Pataki)

I have already begun to schedule programs for the year 2015. If you have a subject or person you would like to see or present a program write it down, give it to me and I’ll see what I can arrange.

All Stars' raffle quilt has been displayed at Cinnamon's Quilt Shop for several weeks now but will soon be moving to a new location. I am still working out the details but if you know of any event or group where our quilt could be displayed for an evening or several days, please contact Cathy Jones (363-6683 or [email protected]).

QuiltFest

July 25, 2014 is the deadline to register your quilt for this year’s QuiltFest. If you are planning to enter something your paperwork must be in to the registrar by that date. To print the form, go to www.quiltfestjax.com and download as many as you need. You have until turn-in in September to finish your masterpiece though. We certainly hope many of you have entries to help make QuiltFest 2014 a huge success. If there are any questions contact one of your QuiltFest representatives (Gay Montgomery, June Daniels, Pat D’Elia, Margaret Stewart, or Linda Wilson)

Ticket sales are going well, and I think are ahead of last year, at least as far as how many have been checked out. Remember, tickets are $1.00 each and at least half of the proceeds will go to The Senior Life Foundation. I have packets of 20 tickets available at the back table.

Dot Butler thanked Vicki Zoller for her organization of the quilt challenge. Vicki thanked all that

participated in the challenge along with the four winners this year.

Vicki Zoller reported she has sent out 4 cards this past month to guild members.

Please notify Vicki if you know someone that we can reach out to.

Betty Ann Agnew mentioned keeping Pat Pataki and Betty Meers in

our prayers.

Ellen Cannon thanked everyone who brought donations in for the food bank drive today.

She also mentioned that cash donations were also appreciated. Ellen explained our guild supports Hospice, Hospice PedsCare, daniels, Safe Harbor and placemats for Meals on Wheels. Ellen said they delivered 17 quilts last month. As the quilts were being selected it was mentioned there is a great need for boys quilts. The desired sizes are receiving blanket size and crib through long twin. More specific information is listed on our website. An All Star member announced she attended an event recently and was asked by a representative from daniels if she was an All Star Guild member. They expressed such gratitude for the quits we have made for them. Ellen and Elaine will be stepping down from their positions at the end of the year and are seeking 2 members that might be interested in serving on the community service committee. They would like to mentor their successors so the transition is smooth. Please contact Ellen or Elaine. Elaine Brett announced the Lolly pop Sit n' Roll was a great success. There were 33 members present. Their goal was to complete 400 pops but they had to stop the production at 570 completed lolly pops so they could clean up and go home.

Karen Weisman announced Bettye Stilley is stepping down from her position on the education

committee but Judy Cwalina and Pris Roehm have volunteered and are being mentored for the position. Karen asked that we share any tips or ideas from classes that we attend so those suggestions can be shared with the group. Karen went over the schedule of classes. Marita Eng taught Cathedral windows on May 26th. The class was a success and several members brought in their projects to show today. Fabric Ink Technique with Ruthie Painter and Deborah Holton will be held on June 30th. Ruthie and Deborah waived their class fee and are purchasing extra supplies to be used in their class. Diamond Magic with Lynne Provencher is scheduled on July 28th. The patterns for the class are available for purchase from Karen. Making a parasol with Starr is on August 25th. There will be no class scheduled for September and October 27th Andrea Pellegrino will teach Free Motion quilting. Demo Day is scheduled for November 24th. Sunny Malesky will present a Mystery Scrap basket class next spring. Our classes usually start at 10 AM and end at 1 PM. We normally don't stop for lunch so bring a light snack if needed.

Jean Newton reported she wasn't taking photos today for the guild directory.

Marsha Bookstaver announced she is passing the AQS catalog during the meeting for those

interested in placing an order. The money must be paid prior to the order being mailed out.

No report today.

Jean Newton is circulating the sign-up sheet for refreshments.

Linda Wilson reported that we had 72 members and 8 guests with 2 new members. Mary

Hoskins and Bonita Bates won today's door prizes. Linda McClelland introduced Jackie Bowman as our featured quilter in the May Gazette and presented her with a gift.

Dot Butler asked for volunteers to represent our guild at the QuiltFest meeting June 17th. June

Daniels announced the monthly QuiltFest meeting is held at the downtown Windham Hotel on the 3rd Tuesday at 7 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend. June showed us a shirt that the St. Augustine Piecemakers guild are making and selling. The cost is $25.00 each and will have our guild name embroidered on it. See June for the order forms.

Cathy Jones announced the raffle quilt is on display at Cinnamon's Quilt Shop.

Cinnamon's will sell our raffle tickets to those interested in purchasing a ticket.

Karol Blomgren announced $140.00 in raffle tickets were sold on the first day! There

has been $220.00 collected to date. Please see Karol to pick up your tickets. They are in packs of 20 tickets in an envelope. Please write your name on the outside of the envelope. you to assist her.

Nothing planned at this time.

Trish Egbert explained Sit n' Stitch day was a day to gather and have fun. You can work on your

own project or participate in what she has planned. Sit n' Stitch is scheduled on the 2nd Monday of the month. We usually start arriving about 9:30 AM and begin at 10 AM. Computer fabric printing with Margaret Stewart and her husband is June 23rd. Margaret's husband will be teaching how to use the computer to print on fabric. Trish will demonstrate Patriotic snowball blocks used in a QOV quilt on July 14th. Bonnie will take names and provide lunch for those interested. The proceeds will go to the Ways & Means committee. Dog Days and Kitty Kwilts for pet rescue operations with Jan Walker will be on August 11th.

Today the guild’s Quilter's Walk was set up with tickets being sold for the items on display.

Many participated and after today's program tickets were drawn and winners announced. The winners were June Daniels, Dorothy Gunter, Kathy Rutherford, Evelyn Leddy, Mary Anne Dennis, Mindy Ashby, Janice Martin, Carol Vonderheide, Ellen Cannon, Barbara Mahar, Margaret Stewart, Alice Gentile, Betty Olson, Val Stanley, and Marsh Bookstaver. Some of our ladies won multiple items!

Kathy Rutherford gladly consented to do our program today. I understand it was last

minute! She named it “program in a bag”. Kathy's bag from Lady Bug Quilt Shop contained her purchases made during her visit to Dallas. Using the bag as a prop she explained some of our local shops and what they have to offer. Kathy then showed us some of her fun purchases.

We had 1 member show their UFO project and 7 members show their finished projects. David

Sparks, one of or new members brought in his first quilt to share with us.

Retreat 2014

Sign-ups for the November Guild Retreat will continue at the July 21st Guild meeting. Retreat will start at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 10th, and end after breakfast on Friday, November 14th. The total cost for the Retreat is $240. If you only can come for two or three days, you are welcome, and the cost would be $56 per day.

Mary Beth, the new manager at the Christian Conference Center, has said that they would like to have a minimum of 25 retreaters. In the past we have had 30 or more, and there is plenty of room for more. As of the June Guild meeting, 15 people have registered to attend Retreat. The minimum deposit to attend the full Retreat is $50 and is non-refundable unless Retreat is canceled by the Guild or by the Conference Center. If you plan to attend for two or three days, the full payment of $56 per day is due when you register. This year there will be something new for members who can only come for one day - a one-day fee of $25 which includes lunch, but not dinner or overnight accommodations.

We hope you will join us in November. If you are a new member and have never attended a Retreat, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with other members. You will spend an enjoyable week without worrying about cooking or cleaning house – just come and sew or read, take naps or go shopping at local quilt shops.

Road Trip

I have a road trip planned for Wednesday, July 30th. We will leave from the Target parking lot at San Jose and 295 at 8:30 AM. We will go to Rockledge for lunch at Ashley’s and a visit to The Quilt Place (group favorites), then travel on south to Melbourne to take in a fiber art exhibit. “Florida in Fabric II” is being displayed and I’ve heard it is well worth seeing. I think it will be a rather long trip this time. We may not return until after 5 PM. Come along and spend the day with your fellow guild members. It will be fun.

The way the road trips work is that I get volunteers to drive, then I put 3 or 4 people in their cars with them. The riders each help the drivers with the cost of gas (about $7-12) depending on the length of the trip. If you are new to this program, give it a try. If you’re a seasoned “tripper” encourage someone new to come along. Any questions call or e-mail me. Home - 262-8359 or cell - 742-8359 [email protected]

Sit ‘n Stitch

Thanks a bunch to Sherm Stewart (Margaret’s husband) for a super presentation on printing from your computer to fabric. Sherm provided a lot of terrific advice on using your word processing program and others (like Photoshop) to design the perfect image.

On July 14th, we will be working on our patriotic quilts. You may bring your own project (patriotic or not). Or you may join me in a group community service project to create an easy Quilt of Valor pattern I call “Snowballs in July”.

I will have fabric squares cut, ready to be stitched together into blocks, rows, and (hopefully) a quilt top (or two). So you may bring just your machine and basic sewing supplies (cutting tools, too) and work on what is provided.

Also, there are some simple appliquéd stars used on this quilt. If you’d just like to come fuse and hand sew (or machine appliqué), that’s also an option.

If you’d like to bring your own fabric, you’ll need the following for the center of the quilt top:

48 blocks, each 6 ½” square, of patriotic and/or red and blue prints. The pattern suggests 8 fat quarters.

About 2 yards of white background fabric (solid, texture, or tone-on-tone) cut into 192 squares, each 2 ½”, and 82 rectangles, 2 ½’ x 6 ½”.

35 squares, each 2 ½’, of red and/or blue (solid, texture, or tone-on-tone)

For borders (including the appliquéd stars), the pattern requires additional white, red, and blue fabric (about 3/4 yard each) and about one yard of a patriotic print. But you probably won’t get that far on Monday. I will have copies of the pattern available for you to take home to finish up.

There will not be a lunch served, as previously announced. If we decide to stay after the noon hour, we’ll make a sandwich or pizza run to someplace nearby.

I am looking forward to some star-spangled fun! Come and join us around 9:45 or so on Monday, July 14th.

Trish Egbert

Tip of the Month

My tip is to take advantage of cute fabric to make a quilt label. I have trouble with quilt labels. I want them to be nice, but I don't want to take up a lot of time with them, especially for community service quilts. The photo is the label that I put on my quilt as you go quilts. This fabric is the border fabric, and there was plenty of room to write between the leaf motifs. So that's where I put my info. I was pleased with the result, and wanted to share the idea.

Ways and Means

A big thank you to Mary Anne and Vicki for filling in for me at last month's All Stars Quilters Walk. Everyone says it was a fun event and the guild received $190.00 in proceeds. Thank you too for the donations that were given.

Two Wounded Warrior Sit ‘n Stitch events are scheduled for the rest of this year. The first is September 8th and the second date is October 13th. Lunch will be provided each day for a cost of $5.00 - where can you buy a sandwich, fruit or salad, dessert, and a beverage for that cost? .

For this month's meeting, we will by doing the 50/50 again. We will also have the Christmas Raffle Quilt as a Ways & Means Fund raiser. So bring your cash to participate because the quilt Betty Ann donated is beautiful!!
