The French Riviera is known for its picturesque beach-es and laissez-faire attitude at their clothing-optional beaches, but GNI recently discovered that nudity (specifi-cally gay naturism) is not as openly accepted in France as one might assume, given the European’s openness with nudity in general. As a result of our account being terminated, GNI decided to self publish its now-monthly publication, The Gay Naturist E-former.

The E-former is bornIn 2011, GNI started producing The Gay Naturist

E-former, a bi-monthly newsletter available to the public in both a browser-readable and downloadable PDF for-mat. This newsletter was a supplement to GNI’s official members-only quarterly publication, The Gay Naturist Informer. It was produced as a way to share information about male nudism and as a marketing tool to reach new demographics of people. Within months after its introduc-tion, GNI found that the E-former was being widely dis-tributed and read, thus affirming our “proof of concept” as a viable marketing tool that disseminates naturist-related information.

One of the things that made the publication easily accessible to the public is that the newsletter could be read in any browser page simply by clicking on a link. There are many third-party services that convert a publi-cation into HTML, and after reviewing a number of servic-es, GNI chose Calaméo, located in Paris, France. There wasn’t anything that really made us choose Calaméo over any other service — they offered us a free account, no ads, and unlimited uploads within a fairly generous con-tent agreement. A quick search of their publication library also provided us with a number of (straight) naturist-relat-ed publications, and after reading Calaméo’s Terms of Service (TOS), we concluded that there was nothing in

the E-former that would violate their terms regarding “acceptable use and content.”

GNI signed up for Calaméo’s free ser-vice and we started producing our publica-tion in a browser-readable format. Just to be sure there weren’t any issues with nudity in the E-former, full frontal pictures were edited to cover up crotches, much to the dismay of many purists who felt that GNI was “ashamed of our bodies” by cov-ering penises. No, there was no shame involved, just a cautious approach to ensure GNI flew under the radar of Calaméo’s TOS.

Trouble with CalaméoAbout a year went by without any trou-

ble until one morning, when I received an e-mail from Calaméo informing me that one of our issues was reported and

removed for a violation of their TOS. I immediately sent an e-mail reply to them asking for specific details of what was offensive, but I did not receive a reply. After a few days, and since there was no way to appeal their heavy-handed action of removing our publication, I uploaded the same issue without further incident.

Everything was fine until May 2014. One morning after I got to the Business Office, an e-mail from Calaméo informed me, “Your account has been terminated.” That’s it. There was no further explanation, no reference to a TOS violation, and no opportunity to appeal. Not only were all of our past issues for 2-1/2 years of the E-former removed, but Calaméo deacti-vated and removed GNI’s account alto-gether while placing an IP block on the Business Office’s internet connection.

GNI E-former October 20144

Confused and not sure what else to do, I started to look for other third-party compa-nies that provided the same service. I felt uneasy after this latest incident to sign up with any other provider; you lose control over your content when a third-party pro-vider is the one calling the shots on what is deemed acceptable material. Ultimately, they get to decide what is acceptable and what is not. I kept an open mind on these services, but also felt it would be in the best interest of GNI to purchase our own software and self-publish our materials rather than rely on someone else to do it for us. Ultimately, that is what we’ve done.

GNI finds a solution: self publish!GNI found a low-cost, yet powerfully

robust, software that accomplishes the production our publication needs and allows us to grow the publication without fear or concern over the arbitrary enforce-ment of TOS policies by third-party provid-ers. All of the past issues of the E-former have been restored and converted to our own software; past issues, previously removed by Calaméo, are now accessible to the public once again through the GNI web site. You can find the current and back issues here: Back Issues of The Gay Naturist E-former.

Fair and equitable content policyI understand that a company/organiza-

tion should have the autonomy to set its own policies with regard to content by its customers; even GNI has a content policy when it comes to articles and photo sub-missions. However, I believe that policy enforcement should be fair and equitable

to everyone. Herein lies the double stan-dard Calaméo has created with their cus-tomers. Calaméo does not seem to have a problem with the content of straight publi-cations; a quick search of their publication library yielded a number of straight naturist publications including Vita Naturista Magazine, Naturisme et Sexualite, Guida Naturista Italiana, and others. They even allow gay publications showing nudity that promotes parties in Paris, L’Agenda Gay de Paris and more. We’re not sure why Calaméo terminated GNI’s E-former while allowing others to publish, and it’s a mys-tery that will never be solved. Now that GNI has procured our own publishing soft-ware, we will no longer be held to the standards and policies of others who may, with or without cause, take action against us for any number of reasons. Wow! What an amazing week we had at GNI’s first NakedFest! We left the camp just 24-hours ago, but the memories will last forever.

Words can’t even describe the week; the event was something that you really had to experience. Attendees arrived on Saturday, August 2, and many of the regular GNI Gathering attendees found that we were doing things differently.

This was planned intentionally; we did not want to sim-ply recreate the GNI Gathering at this new location. The changes in the venue, housing, and probably the biggest change, the schedule, was first met with apprehension, but in the true spirit of the GNI brotherhood, attendees went with the flow and found that we provided a structure to create deeper personal interaction by allowing more time for men to spend quality time with each other.

Discrimination began in late 90sWe first experienced this kind of dis-

crimination many years ago in the late 90s. At that time, the Internet was young and there weren’t many choices of hosting providers. GNI found a gay-owned compa-ny that did not have an issue with our (nude) content and I found them to be both helpful and responsive to our needs as we began to expand our web site. Things were going great until we were informed by the new owners of the hosting provider that our content violated their TOS and they immediately put a block on our IP address rendering our web site “unavailable” to the world. The gay owners wanted to move on and thus sold their operations to another company that came in and enforced a new set of TOS terms on us without even an introductory e-mail or warning. The only notice we received was a URL error when trying to access the home page. We scurried to find another provider that allowed both gay and nude content — a difficult thing to do in the late 90s. Through a series of leads, we suc-cessfully found another hosting service, moved our web site, and within a week or so, GNI’s web site was back online.

Then, the same thing happened again about a year later. This new hosting ser-vice was acquired by yet a larger company that changed their TOS, found our content to be objectionable and blocked our web site.

GNI gets its own serverIt was at that time in early 2000 that

GNI decided to purchase our own server, giving us sole discretion to determine our own policies on acceptable use and con-tent. We’ve now had our own server since 2000 and there have been no further issues. Since it has happened to GNI, we also felt that it could potentially happen to any number of nudist clubs, and that is when GNI started offering free hosting on our server to any GNI-affiliated nudist club. We didn’t want to have clubs worry about their content and experience the same things we did. GNI now hosts the web sites of only five nudist clubs; any affiliated club is welcome to be hosted with us for free if they wish.

Even gay companies discriminateThis happens only with straight compa-

nies working with gay companies, right? Wrong.

A similar thing happened to GNI very recently when we started to promote NakedFest earlier this year. A few years ago, GNI paid for ad space on some pop-ular web sites including Manhunt, Adam4Adam, and Recon. The ads were on the expensive side and sent a lot of traffic to our web site, but we didn’t find that the number of completed registrations from those marketing efforts to be cost effective enough to continue paid advertis-ing. Sure, some new members came to

GNI purchased its own server in early 2000 so it could control content. GNI now offers free hosting to affiliated local clubs.

The Gathering from those ads, but not as many as we had hoped and certainly not enough to break even. This year, as we started to plan and promote NakedFest, we thought we would simply post NakedFest on a popular GPS-oriented social network for men. The event placement was free and we felt NakedFest would appeal to the users of this very popular mobile app. Many GNI members were already mem-bers of this app and regularly used the app in their communities and travels. I read over the posted guidelines for adding events and didn’t see a problem; we met and exceeded all of their guidelines — or at least I thought we did. I enthusiastically completed an event submission and eagerly anticipated a positive response. Well, I did receive a response, but it wasn’t so positive. Here’s a copy of their reply (the name of the social network app has been removed and replaced by aster-isks (*****)):

Dear Executive Director,Thank you for your submission of

the event “NakedFest 2014” to the ***** event calendar. Unfortunately, we are unable to approve this event for the following reason: This event is pri-marily sexual in nature. (Emphasis added by author.)

Please note that all events posted to the ***** event calendar must com-ply with the following event guidelines:• Events must be open to the gener-

al public. No private parties or birthdays. (NakedFest was open to the public; any male 21 years and older could register.)

• Events must not be primarily sexu-al in nature. No fetish parties, sex

clubs, or bathhouse events. (NakedFest, like our other events, is nonsexual.)

• Events may not be ongoing. We prefer events that occur no more than once in a given quarter, to maximize the value of the RSVP feature in the app. (NakedFest takes place once in 2014.)

• Events must be of broad interest to the ***** community. (No question that NakedFest is of interest to this specific community.)

• Events may not be cruises. (Nope, we are not a cruise.)

• Events may not be trips or tours. (NakedFest is a landed event at one location.)

• Events must happen within the next 6 months. (No problem; we were meeting in 4 months.)

You are welcome to re-submit an event that fits within this set of criteria.Regards,The Team at *****

“This event is primarily sexual in nature.”

Really? This is news to me. It’s also a surprise to me that someone sitting at a computer reading through event submis-sions would be able to quickly come to this conclusion. There is nothing on our web site to indicate that NakedFest is a sexual event or that anything we do during the week is primarily for sex. A quick glance at our posted schedule would con-vince anyone that NakedFest was anything but a “primarily sexual” event, but that’s what someone who monitors e-mail con-cluded.

I replied, asking them to reconsider

Page 8: The Gay Naturist E-former - October 2014 - MemberClicks · vice and we started producing our publica-tion in a browser-readable format. Just to be sure there weren’t any issues

GNI E-former October 20148

their decision based on activities that were planned at NakedFest, but there was no additional response — no communication, nothing. And, there is no way to contact a live person; all communications occur through an online contact form from their web site. I hoped that someone would have the courtesy and professionalism to respond. No one did. Recently in a promo ad, this app used the following, “One of the most popular gay hookup apps …”. They clearly refer to themselves as a “gay hookup” app, a term that we all agree has significant sexual connotations, yet they would not consider posting an event like NakedFest or The GNI Gathering, two non-sexual events, as an acceptable event to promote to their members.

Discrimination or ignorance? At first I felt a little discriminated

against, but the more I thought about it, I realized this is not about discrimination, but about ignorance. We (naturists) have some work to do.

This is an issue about education – that recreational social nudity does not mean sexual activity – and I challenge and invite the staff and founders of this social net-working site to learn more about male naturism as their perception of our events, and naturism in general, is sorely misguid-ed.

Help GNI educate the public !How do we accomplish this task of

educating the public? It starts with you. Share with your friends your experiences of going to a nude beach, attending a nud-ist function, or a national event such as

NakedFest or The GNI Gathering. The more people hear about your involvement, the less mysterious naturism becomes. Post events and invitations to your profile on social network sites that are open to gay/male naturism. When you see or hear of an arbitrary enforcement of a policy or double standard, ask questions. You may not receive a response like we’ve had over the years, but someone is receiving a reply that is asking valid questions and you are making people think. The more we reach out, the more we explain, and the more we educate, the more bridges we build. We will keep trying. We will not be discouraged, and we will continue to help non-naturists understand the joys of clothes-free freedom.

“They clearly refer to themselves as a ‘gay hookup’ app.”

TRAVEL

I enjoy getting naked wherever I can, even in places where few are willing to venture into letting it all hang out. I’ve posted a few articles and submitted lots of pictures over the years to the GNI Informer and E-former about exotic plac-es I’ve visited and gone naked. Most of the time beaches are the venues, although with few beaches on Easter Island I had to “go native” and visit a volcano and an Ahu.

(See my article in the August E-former.)A couple weeks ago, I was upgraded to

a suite in a hotel in New York City for some reason (I’m far too cheap to pay for one!) and it had a balcony. I got there just as the day was ending. The sun was gone, but the lights on the Empire State Building were on, and I couldn’t resist being naked 30 stories up from the streets of Manhattan.

NakedFest was great!NakedFest was a total blast. I love the

freedom and camaraderie of GNI events. Big thanks to all you presenters, volun-teers, and camp staff who made it happen. Especially fun was the opportunity to share authentic Hawaiian hula dancing and even have some really brave and tal-ented new friends join me in the talent show, all decked out in glorious naked-ness and luscious Maryland forest ferns.

The Gay GamesIt was a veritable blast to play volley-

ball every day with the GNI guys who, also with courage, joined me and 6,000 other

LGBT athletes the following week at the awesome Gay Games in Cleveland, OH. There, in uniforms, the GNI guys were almost as handsome as they were in their birthday suits on the Ramblewood sand court.

In Cleveland, the GNI guys had their six players, and I was scheduled to be rotating in on a Sydney, Australia team as the seventh player, However, upon arrival at GG, it was announced that a new “Team United” was forming and needed one more player to make the required six. So I jumped in with four Russians and a Chilean and, although none of us had ever played volleyball with one another before,

we got “naked,” in the GNI spirit, and became quickly close and connected. Hence we rocked the Convention Center, receiving second place (silver medals) in our category.

Hawaii is calling! If you like being naked, shak-

ing your hips, and/or flicking your wrists, there’s plenty oppor-tunity at upcoming events here in Hawaii. Departed sweetheart Earnest and I founded the Kalani nature-culture-wellness retreat 40 years ago, and it continues to grow and thrive as Hawaii’s larg-est adult clothing-optional accommodations. Men’s events are offered year-round and always include naked fun in Kalani’s four pools (25 meter lap pool, water massage thermal pool, and two huge spa pools).

Also great for naked fun are the nearby beach, local steam baths, streams, and waterfalls. Additionally, there are over 50 activities presented every week at Kalani and numerous adven-tures in the area, which is Hawaii’s largest conservation coast, and includes spectacular Volcanoes National Park. In the Park, hot lava can currently be seen at the main Halema’uma’u Crater. Pele, the volcano deity, can also be witnessed now, as hyped in national news, flowing towards the sea. Hawaii volcanoes, although the world’s most active, are also called “drive in,” because they are not explosive or a life threat. Kalani is not in Pele’s current

path, and it is important to honor the lava’s choice of direction and keep at least a few steps away. Several roads leading to Kalani remain open.

Sunny days and fresh open breezes continue to characterize our daily weather. The best times to be here are like now (fall), when all the elements (fire, earth, wind, and water) are dancing — a hula, of course!

PERSONAL STORIES

I have been a nudist for a long time. My first experiences were during expo 1974 in Spokane, WA at High Bridge Park. There was a group of us that hung out there for so long it was almost like we lived there.

That’s just the way it’s supposed to be — it’s a nice part about being in rural Nebraska. I’m able to find plenty of places to enjoy nudity without worry of someone always close by that might be offended. I have friends come by because of this, and they like to hike and enjoy plenty of nature and naturism in a large area with trails, wooded areas, valleys and overlooks, and plenty of vitamin D.

Most of the people I know are aware that I’m a nudist and it makes them curi-ous as to how I do it because some nar-row-minded people think nudism is about sex. They’ll learn. Well, maybe. A lot of them just don’t get the chance to get out and get into a nudist lifestyle. I wish they could so they could see it’s just natural and you sure don’t have to worry about

trendy clothes styles or status; just enjoy the fact that no bodies are perfect and you’ll see how comfortable you’ll be when it’s all about naturism.

Happy Naked Trails.

Before I had even walked into my doc-tor’s office to ask him about Truvada, I had already done my research. Truvada, also known as PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylactic) is a CDC-approved drug that can actually prevent HIV transmission when taken regularly as prescribed. I origi-nally heard about it from a client of mine who has been writing a book called Everything A Gay Man Needs to Know

About HIV.Briefly about me: I’m in my early 30’s,

negative, and have always been attracted exclusively to mature men. I have a decent sex drive and while I am versatile, the majority of my fantasies revolve around being the bottom. My husband and I have an open relationship and he was 100% supportive of my going on Truvada and is fully aware of the sexual play that

would inevitably take place at NakedFest. When I talked to my doctor about PrEP,

I was shocked to discover he had not ever heard about it. Here I was, the patient, informing my doctor about this drug that could potentially change the relationship between gay men and sex. As I started to inform my doctor why I wanted to go on Truvada, I noticed him starting to give me a funny look.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him.“I feel funny about prescribing some-

thing to prevent a condition that you don’t currently have,” he said.

“Tell me, what exactly is birth control?” I asked him.

He thought for a moment and then answered, “Good point.”

So let’s get to the part that most of you are probably wondering.

What happened after I went on Truvada? Was I out every night getting wild? Was it one giant orgy after another?

Not quite.More than anything, being on Truvada

gave me peace of mind, and it ended up helping me in a way I never could have predicted. One day I wanted to play with this one guy who had an amazing body, but I knew he was positive. He wanted to bareback, but I told him that was out of the question, even with my being on Truvada. He agreed to use a condom and so we went at it. It wasn’t until after we were done that I realized the lube he had used was baby oil based (which dissolves latex). I ran to the trashcan to inspect the condom and thankfully, it was fully intact. Still, it made me think to myself about the “what if” factor. Even when you use a con-dom there is still a risk. If it breaks, you’ve just gone from 98% coverage to 100%

exposure, but if you’re on Truvada, you still have 99% coverage. For me, it was a bit like a backup plan (no pun intended).

While I was at NakedFest, I offered a workshop on Truvada and met with others who were also on PrEP as well as a few who had questions about it. If other GNI members are also on PrEP and would like to connect to share their stories, or if any GNI members would like to ask questions about PrEP, please feel free to e-mail me.

Next year, I will go back on Truvada just before The GNI Gathering for the same reasons. This isn’t about everyone re-enacting the gay scene of the 1970s, but about rethinking how we define safer sex. Experts no longer refer to two men who have sex without condoms as “bare-backing” when one them is on Truvada. It is now referred to as “condom-free” sex. Finally, I do want to make it perfectly clear that I am not a doctor and that I am only writing this article to share my experience.

To learn even more about PrEP, please read the e-book, Everything A Gay Man Needs to Know About HIV, by Dick Keiser, Jr., PhD.

Valley Male Nudist Gatherings (VMNG) has just wrapped up a successful second season of monthly summer naked potlucks in the Red River Valley of western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. Midway between Fargo/Moorhead and Grand Forks, we meet at a farmhouse, where we have the privacy to spend our naked afternoons outdoors (weather permitting). While we are still a small

group, our attendance has nearly tripled over last year (from six to 16). Members come from as far away as Minot, ND (four hours), Brookings, SD (three hours), and Hackensack, MN (two-and-a-half hours).

Our final 2014 farmhouse get together was held on September 14; we will be back again in May 2015. We will also con-tinue looking for guys to host indoor events.

Naked yoga classesGNI supports the yoga movement by

maintaining an online listing with contact information for Naked Yoga classes open to men throughout the world. It is updated in real time as GNI learns of changes. Please click here to learn more.

Although GNI’s listing includes many physical addresses, some groups prefer not to publish their meeting location for reasons of privacy or security. When plan-ning to attend a class, make contact beforehand to verify the group is still meet-ing, has enough space, and welcomes your participation.

As an additional resource, GNI mem-ber Bob S., founder / organizer of Naked Yoga for Men in Cambridge, MA (USA), maintains a worldwide Yahoo! Group with extensive links at groups.yahoo.com/

group/naked_yoga_for_men. You may subscribe (it’s free) to access any secured features. The group also has an archive of messages, some of which could be from others in your area who might wish to organize or participate in a class where none now exists.

Club listingsMen’s naturist clubs range from a cou-

ple of dozen guys who get together naked for potluck dinners or movie nights to hun-dreds who gather nude for huge pool or dance parties. There are now nearly 200 groups worldwide. Of those, approximately one-third are formally affiliated with GNI.

GNI strongly encourages you to partici-pate in the activities of the nearest nude club wherever you live or travel. It’s a great way to keep that special GNI feeling going year-round!

GNI maintains an online listing with contact information for local men’s naturist clubs throughout the world. It is updated in real time as GNI learns of changes. Please click here for more information.

The default sort is by country (with the United States and at-large locations at the end), state or province postal abbreviation, and group name. (You may refine your results through the Advanced Search fea-ture under the Directory tab on the naviga-tion bar near the top of the screen.)

Clubs marked with their own logo or a gay naturist flag are affiliated with GNI. When contacting a club by regular mail, please use its acronym on the envelope instead of its full name to protect the priva-cy of the individual handling the mail.

For mainstream (i.e., mixed-gender) groups, visit The Naturist Society Network (TNS) at naturistsociety.com. (Click on Resources, then Network.)
