Focusing on Improving Student Achievement using NWEA assessment, technology integration and TIEnet,

our local data warehouse.

What is NWEA?

What is TIEnet?• A system for instructional data and curriculum management • A system for special education case management

• A system for PBGR, individual learning plans, health data, 504, literacy plan management• Our user friendly data warehouse where we can store and disaggregate assessment data

• A system used by teachers, administrators AND STUDENTS.

• These State-aligned computer adaptive tests measure student achievement and growth• Also called MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) from NWEA (Northwest Education

Association) local assessments• Teachers can easily target appropriate and relevant instruction for each student or group of

students using DesCartes, NWEA's continuum of learning (which is aligned to the GLE/GSEs) • NWEA Reading tests report Lexile scores so that teachers and media center staff can help

students and parents select appropriately challenging reading materials• Currently, students in grades 2 - 11 are assessed using this tool

When does Curriculum Integration occur?

Integration occurs when the purpose of the learning activities is to focus the

technology use on curriculum — discipline-specific, content-area

curriculum — using technology as a tool to foster higher level outcomes.

Why Did Middletown Integrate Curriculum?

• Students need to be proficient in the use of technology • Correctly designed, more depth into the content-area

curriculum is possible• In the information age, there is an intrinsic need to learn

technology• Students are motivated by technology, thus increasing academic

engagement time• While working in more depth with the content, students are

able to move beyond knowledge and comprehension to application and analysis of information

• Students learn where to find information in an information rich world

• Computer skills should not be taught in isolation• Students develop computer literacy by applying various

computer skills as part of the learning process

Why was Curriculum Integration the right choice for Middletown?

MIDDLETOWN PUBLIC SCHOOLS and NCLB

Meeting the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Goals for Enhancing Education Through Technology

• Primary Goal - The primary goal of this part is to improve student academic achievement through the use of technology in elementary schools and secondary schools.

• Additional Goals - The additional goals of this part are the following: – To assist every student in crossing the digital divide by ensuring that

every student is technologically literate by the time the student finishes the eighth grade, regardless of the student's race, ethnicity, gender, family income, geographic location, or disability.

– To encourage the effective integration of technology resources and systems with teacher training and curriculum development to establish research-based instructional methods that can be widely implemented as best practices by State educational agencies and local educational agencies.

Page 17: The Gaudet Times

What does curriculum integration look like in Middletown Public Schools?

•Technology Educators and Specialists support subject area teachers as they develop and implement tasks to integrate technology across the curriculum.

•Teachers schedule time in the computer classroom and then walk their students through a hands-on approach to learning and applying technology and content area standards for class-related projects.

Accessing Our Data Systems…..Using quicklinks (from our website) makes our systems easily accessible for all

Teacher Web Site

Page 26: The Gaudet Times

Teachers now have access to information about their students. They can click on a student and view any forms attached to that student (IEP, PLP, assessment data, etc.)

Page 27: The Gaudet Times

A teacher can view IEP information(teachers can also view PLPs, 504s, ILPs, assessment data, and health information)

Page 28: The Gaudet Times

A teacher can view the assessment history to learn more about a student.

Page 30: The Gaudet Times

Do students use the TIEnet system? Yes! for online portfolio (performance assessment), e-Capstone, all PBGR management & Individual Learning Plans

Page 31: The Gaudet Times

TIEnet provides students with a user-friendly data system that enables them to take

responsibility for their own learning in a timely fashion.

Page 32: The Gaudet Times

The Individual Learning Plan (ILP) in TIEnet allows students to reflect on their social/emotional needs as part of their self-knowledge page. On the goals page, they have the opportunity to examine their academic

and career goals.

Page 33: The Gaudet Times

How is the TIEnet system used for online curriculum management linked to grade level/span expectations that are aligned to curriculum?

Page 34: The Gaudet Times

Additional components of the curriculum management system include instructional resources, units of study, strategies, and

assessments.
