The New Design University St. Pölten (NDU) was founded by the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce and its business development institute (WIFI) in 2004. As an international site of high-end education in design, technology and business, the NDU trains creative thinkers who advance social change and explore tomorrow’s work and design practice today.

The NDU stands out for its high level of personal supervision, attaching special im-portance to the combination of theory and practice. Imparting business skills is another matter of great importance at the private university in St. Pölten.

T H E L O C AT I O NIn autumn 2014, the New Design University has moved in to the new Technology and Design Centre. Suffused with light, the new two-storey building has ample room for lecture halls, workshops and laboratories, creating the ideal setting for inspirational encounters and a pleasant, creative atmosphere.

Students at the NDU have access to a unique array of facilities, ranging from a photo studio and an audio/video lab over event equipment and a 3D printing shop to carpentry and metalworking workshops – and even a smithy!

The university is easy to reach by car, bike or public transport, with excellent local facilities (two shopping centres and the event venue VAZ St. Pölten are just around the corner).

F U T U R E L A BThe Future Lab is a dedicated NDU platform aimed to bring businesspeople and crea-tive workers together. During your studies, it allows you to work in interdisciplinary teams on real-life projects and to develop specific solutions which are actually put into practice by the clients. All projects are supervised by teachers from various disciplines and external specialists. This is an opportunity to gather valuable know-ledge and practical experience for your future job and to put it to work even while you are studying.

T H E T E A M O F T H E N E W D E S I G N U N I V E R S I T YAt the moment, approximately 100 teachers attend to roughly 450 students at the NDU. The atmosphere at the university is very familiar: the teaching groups regularly consist of some 30 students, often less. Individual tuition is also an everyday matter here. During the semester, the core academic team is present on a daily basis in or-der to ensure optimal supervision.

The NDU professors are supported by an extensive network of external teachers, who often teach at the NDU in addition to their main occupation – thus bringing the hottest and most relevant topics from their business life into class on a regular basis. Moreover, this means that they can help integrate the NDU students into a wide network of project partners. The entire team of the New Design University distinguishes itself by its ample experience and international character.

A D M I S S I O N R E Q U I R E M E N T SIn order to enrol for a bachelor’s course, applicants should have A-levels (i.e. secondary school/high school diploma). Applicants who haven’t completed second-ary education may also be admitted to the NDU, provided they display excep-tional artistic/creative aptitude.In order to enrol for a master’s course, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree.

All applicants must pass an entrance examination to test their aptitude for the particular discipline. Another condition is that applicants display an appropriate command of German (Level B2). We will be happy to advise you in person or over the phone via our info line.

At the NDU, most classes are taught in German. While you are free to submit writ-ten work in English (or other languages, by arrangement with your teachers), you must be able to understand German well enough in order to be able to follow the discussions in class.

If German is not your strong point, the NDU can offer you a two-semester intensi-ve German course which you should take before commencing your studies. In this case, we also recommend taking a preparatory course parallel to your Ger-man classes. For design studies, we offer the one-year »Foundation Course« (€2.700/year) which lets you work in various disciplines – graphic design, 3D design, photography etc. – while simultaneously improving your artistic portfolio. For technical studies, we recommend the one-year »Event Engineering Prestudy Course« (€2.980/year) which already includes a specifically-tailored German course (focusing on technical vocabulary) and allows you to take up to four sub-jects from the Bachelor's course in advance!

St. Pölten has more potential than you might suppose at first glance: the provincial capital and main educational centre in Lower Austria, the city offers excellent infra-structure to all students. Several halls of residence and a wide range of sports faci-lities make your time studying in St. Pölten one of exciting encounters. The growing cultural scene – theatres, arthouse cinema, vibrant festivals, concerts and clubs –lends the city its special character.

St. Pölten also boasts excellent transport links. A number of neighbouring cities - for example, Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Munich, Budapest and Bratislava – are easy to reach by car and public transport. The train journey between St. Pölten and Vienna’s central station takes only 25 minutes!

L I V I N G I N S T. P Ö LT E N Two modern halls of residence (Campus Domus, WIHAST) are located in Herzogen-burger Straße, with a third situated right in the city centre (Kolpinghaus St. Pölten).

Living in St. Pölten is far less expensive than in Vienna. Numerous landlords offer flats suitable for sharing or studio flats to suit student budgets. The St. Pölten accommodation service provides regular information about private rooms and apartments, that are usually let with no commission.
