The Future of theInternet of Things (IoT)
CASE STUDY
For Itron, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is here. Powering over 200 million devices across electric, gas, and
water resources, they are at the cutting-edge of IIoT leadership. Whether it is helping Paris cut the energy use of
public lighting by 30% or enabling ComEd to reduce the duration of their power outages by almost 50%, Itron is
helping improve the quality of life for millions of people around the world.

Global Utility & Technology
To deliver such an impact, Itron manages a portfolio of networks, services and devices around the world. They generate terabytes of data that need to be secured, routed, and analyzed across Itron’s 60+ corporate locations in 20 countries. Staying ahead of the demand curve to support such a robust and growing footprint requires the network and architecture teams to plan for a scalable network that is dependable, fast, and secure well into the future. The company began exploring options to help transition from legacy MPLS solutions to a cloud optimized network that was both software-defined and enabled them to push security to the edge.
At its core, Itron required the transformation of its research and development and the automation of all processes between the software development and IT teams – DevOps. Itron needed to deploy Microsoft’s Azure DevOps to improve productivity, reduce costs, improve quality, bolster security and reduce development cycles.
Reduced latency, increased speed, and a reallocation of network spend to help further transform an intelligent IT infrastructure. The move to the cloud has enabled 1,600 users to reduce testing cycles creating a fast, agile and scalable environment.
Itron has now deployed web filtering at a much lower cost and has started to see significant cost savings through the implementation of cloud-based voice solutions that have increased collaboration among Itron employees.
Itron teamed-up with Apcela to help create a software-defined network solution that enabled a smooth digital transformation to the cloud. Together, Apcela and Itron are developing a next-generation network that optimizes performance without sacrificing security.
Starting with the foundation of an application-aware routing strategy, technologies like SD-WAN were critical. Apcela layered in its global footprint of AppHUBs at carrier-neutral, cloud exchanges to optimize the performance of key cloud services like Microsoft Azure. Those same AppHUBs became the launching point for distributing firewall, threat detection, and other security services to the edge.
