2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development17 Goals. 169 targetsAdopted by the General Assembly on 25 September 2015

Page 15: The Future of Authoritative Mapping in Europe

2030 UN Sustainable GoalsThe spatial dimension

• SDG 17 Target 18– By 2020, enhance capacity-building support to developing countries,– increase significantly the availability of high-quality, timely and reliable data– Including income, gender, age, race, ethnicity, migratory status, disability,

geographic location

• Follow-up and review processes set certain principles– They will be rigorous and based on evidence;– informed by country-led evaluations and data;– Data will be high-quality, accessible, timely, reliable, and– includes income, sex, age, race, ethnicity, migration status, disability and

geographic location.– Encourages the contribution to be made by a wide range of data, including

earth observation and geospatial information.•

The future role of governments in geospatial data provision and management

End-users should be able to consume government-assured spatial data with the level of trust in quality as they do when they get water from the tap – they are going to get what they expect.

What is the EuropeanLocation Framework?

CONNECTING YOU TO THE AUTHORITATIVE GEO-INFORMATION FRAMEWORK FOR EUROPE

• An information system to find, view, download, or use geographic information for visualization, analysis and dissemination.

• The gateway to pan-European maps, geographic and land information:

– bringing together geospatial information from different agencies anddifferent countries;

– from the organisations responsible for national mapping, cadaster and land registries.

• It is a technical infrastructure that will:– meet user needs;– create new business opportunities; and– increase the reuse of public sector information.

Why is it important?

CONNECTING YOU TO THE AUTHORITATIVE GEO-INFORMATION FRAMEWORK FOR EUROPE

• Single source of authoritative content• Quality Assurance• Up to date• Standard data specifications;

• It harmonises:

– Technical elements of mapping, geographic and land informationrepresentation, including the:

– Data model of how the real world is represented within computer systems– Data specifications and standards– Quality standards

– Business elements of obtaining and using the data, including:– Licensing– Pricing

– Practical elements of obtaining the data, through one, single point of access

Page 22: The Future of Authoritative Mapping in Europe

Why important for Europe?

• Meets European Institutions needs for pan European geospatial data

• It contributes to European policy initiatives:

– the Digital Single Market,

– INSPIRE,

– Copernicus

• It is a building block for Europe.

• A practical implementation of the INSPIRE Directive

Benefits

CONNECTING YOU TO THE AUTHORITATIVE GEO-INFORMATION FRAMEWORK FOR EUROPE

• Provides a single source for authoritative geospatial information

• Simplified pricing and licensing– ‘One-stop shop’

• It saves time and costs– by making datasets consistent across Europe, between themes and

across multiple geographical areas– with INSPIRE requirements– takes less time to discover data sources;– And less time acquiring data from multiple sources

• Reduces information management costs, time, and expertise - Users can ‘consume’ data as a service

The Future:European Location Services

CONNECTING YOU TO THE AUTHORITATIVE GEO-INFORMATION FRAMEWORK FOR EUROPE

• EuroGeographics will build on the project to provide future European Location Services;– Transportation– Cadastral / land registry– Emergency services (Copernicus)– European reporting – EEA– EuroStat – Statistical reporting– Insurance …….

• The achievements of the project will also be used to further test the market, and develop solutions that meet market needs;

• EuroGeographics is working to ensuring its long term future to meet the needs for authoritative reference data on a European and international market.

Conclusion

CONNECTING YOU TO THE AUTHORITATIVE GEO-INFORMATION FRAMEWORK FOR EUROPE

• Paradigm shift from 2-dimensional paper mapping to 3-dimensional(4-d) digital model of the real world.

• Importance of Global and pan-European– Authoritative data – up-to-date, reliable– Harmonised data – good structured data– industry and international standards – ensures ‘interoperability’

• European spatial data infrastructure (European Location Framework)

• Importance of a single platform for maintenance, integration and supply
