Dear Friends,

We are already three months down in 2014 and I am most excited about the possibilities that we will unearth this year. I know that with your continued support UWIDEF will continue growing and carrying out its mandate set almost 25 years ago.

The global economy has been quite challenging and the UWI has not been immune to its effects. Students continue to excel despite the enormous financial challenges with which they are confronted and it is for this reason that UWIDEF has made financial assistance a priority. This year UWIDEF will make over $4.5 million in scholarships available to students for the academic year 2014/15. Scholarships ensure that those among us who have the potential are afforded the opportunity to focus on their studies, with one less matter to consider as they seek to finance their path through the University.

This is only possible because of the support of our donors, for whom I am thankful. I would like to especially thank Tastee Ltd, LIME and Nationwide News Network for the new scholarships which they have contributed this year. Not to be left out though are those companies, organisations and families which have been contributing scholarships for as much as 22 years.

UWIDEF also continues to support other areas of the University including research and infrastructure. In subsequent issues of The Fund, you will read about our support of UWI SODECO.

As the needs of students and the University increase, there is also a need for increased contributions to the fund to enable continued support. My team stands ready to discuss with you the various possibilities that you may pursue and we look forward to partnering with you.

The UWIDEF-Mona brokers, builds and sustains relationships with UWI Mona’s friends. It provides stewardship for funds raised through major capital campaigns and projects, general endowment and planned giving.

Since its incorporation in 1990, UWIDEF at Mona has implemented a number of major projects; provided grants and scholarships for both undergraduate studies and post graduate research; and established various facilities for students.

Each year more students are being accepted to tertiary institutions and each year the number of students in need rises. It is in times like these that the efforts of corporate Jamaica to assist these students is not only necessary, but greatly appreciated.

For the academic year 2014/2015 UWIDEF would like to acknowledge NATIONWIDE NEWS NETWORK and the LIME FOUNDATION for the addition of seven (7) new scholarships for students pursuing degrees at the UWI Mona Campus.

NATIONWIDE NEWS NETWORK joined UWIDEF as a sponsor for its Annual Awards Event. This three year partnership will see

the establishment of the Nationwide News Network Scholarship for Journalism (1) and for Governance (1) valued at $125,000 each.

The LIME Foundation has had a long partnership with UWIDEF dating back to the mid 1990’s. Through the creation of their TOJ Hospital Fund they have been able to help the UHWI attain first class equipment to ensure the UWI Medical students receive first world education and improve patient care. This year LIME has increased their platform to include five(5) scholarships for Telecommunications valued at $300,000 each.

UWIDEF encourages companies, associations, families and individuals to invest in our country’s

future and start a scholarship fund. These named scholarship funds are also a good way to commemorate the legacy of a loved one in a sustainable way. Contributions can also be made to a pool which funds scholarships and bursaries by supporting the Each One Give One Campaign and can be paired with internships and/or Job Placement opportunities.

Dr. Simone Badal McCreath PhD, MBA, MPhil, B.Sc.(Hons) is a Research Fellow at the Natural

Products Institute and a part time lecturer at the University of Technology. She is an editorial board member of American International Journal of Biology and an advisory board member and reviewer of Open Access Biochemistry, London. Dr. Badal also holds the Principal’s award for best research (2013-2014) from the UWI Mona for a research paper entitled “Antiproliferative activity and absolute configuration of zonaquinone acetate from the Jamaican alga Stypopodium zonlae.” (Penicooke N,Walford K, Badal S, Delgoda R, Williams LA, Joseph-Nathan P, Gordillo-Román B, Gallimore W).

Besides reviewing several papers, Dr. Badal McCreath is herself a well published author with 37 publications in several peer reviewed and refereed journals and poster formats at scientific meetings. Her work covers the screening of Jamaican natural and synthetic compounds for potential anti-cancer and chemopreventive properties. The results from her research has attracted funding for a cell culture facility and hopefully an anti-cancer research facility of excellence; the first in Jamaica and the Caribbean. She currently holds a patent pending for work done from her PhD and another patent is in the making. Dr. Badal McCreath’s pace has not slowed as she currently has 2 publications under

review and 8 others being prepared. As a scientific orator she has presented at over 20 scientific meetings/conferences.

Dr. Badal McCreath’s credentials almost pales in comparison to her list of accolades which includes the Elsevier Early Career Woman Scientist award (Chemical Sciences) for the Latin America and Caribbean region; the 2010 Young Scientist/Technologist awardee; the 2010 Inaugural Luther Speare Scholar; First place for excellence at the 2012 7th meeting of the International Society For The Development Of Natural Products (Badal S, Huang G, Tzeng T, Jacobs H, and Delgoda R) in the paper “Anticancer and chemopreventive leads from Garcinia humilis and Clusia flava”; and First place for a

poster entitled “Potential anticancer and chemopreventive properties of Jamaican natural products” at the 2014 SoSa conference.

Outside of dominating in her field she continues to share her expertise by training and supervising students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level while promoting the advancement of science in Jamaica through efforts with Society for Scientific advancement (SoSa) as Chair, Science Policy committee. There she works to improve on and revamp policies that now retard the efficiency and effectiveness of science in Jamaica as well as increasing scientific awareness at the primary and high school levels.

It’s hard to believe that someone who seems so passionate and invested in the field of Bio-Chemistry almost ended up in Medicine! Dr. Badal McCreath’s recalls that when starting UWI in 1999, she entered the then Faculty of Natural Sciences as an undergraduate with hopes of migrating to Medical Sciences as her dream at the time was to become a medical doctor. She remembers early mornings and late nights in the library, labs upon labs on top of intense and voluminous course work. “It felt intense but I was rather determined to beat it and not let it get the best of me.” Badal shared. Being a Christian, her co-Curricular activities on campus revolved around UCCF where she acted as drama and social activities director. Though she didn’t live on campus, her friends who did, ensured she got a taste of hall life, one that is quite exhilarating, and contributes greatly to one’s development. Simone shared that, ‘During the intensity of attaining three degrees, UWI provided me with invaluable friendships so much so that if I achieved nothing else from my UWI experience meeting and having these people in my life would have made it all worthwhile. The mentorship from lecturer, Dr. Rupika Delgoda, who is still quite integral in my development as a young scientist, and my own personal growth are close seconds”.

Her love and passion for Christ inspires her to uplift women through a recent project to write daily devotionals with her women’s group from the Swallowfield chapel, and the writing of her first book, “A Woman’s Journey to Success.” She also enjoys cooking and baking while being a wife to her wonderful husband Gregory.

The FundShortly after the founding of the UWIDEF a call was made

to members of corporate Jamaica and other enlightened individuals, to make a contribution to the development

of the University of the West Indies. Respondents to the call who made a minimum contribution of $1 million were made a part of the Century Club, which has been the main component of the Endowment that was created.

Over the years the UWIDEF has increased membership of the Century Club with companies and individuals who have contributed and continue to contribute to the fund for scholarships and other programmes. In this issue, the Fund features Century Club members the Airports Authority of Jamaica, KPMG, DunnCox and Myers Fletcher and Gordon.

Airports Authority of JamaicaIn 1993 the Airports Authority of Jamaica was approached to become a member of the Century Club member and without hesitation pledged J$200,000 each year for 5 years. However 21 years later the annual contribution continues, which is placed in the pool of funds used to provide scholarships.

About the AAJ The Airports Authority of Jamaica provides oversight and contract administration with each Airport Operator; MBJ Airports Limited and NMIA Airports Limited. Additionally as a part of its responsibility, AAJ provides operation and management of the four domestic aerodromes; Ken Jones in Portland; Tinson Pen in Kingston; Ian Flemming at Boscobel in St. Mary and; Negril in Hanover.

KPMGFor twelve years the auditing firm KPMG has been a partner of the UWIDEF. When approached to join the Century Club a contribution of cash was not possible, however partners made an offer which was equally valuable, if not more so, to provide auditing services annually. As a result of this service the UWIDEF has been able to ensure that its activities are monitored and audited in accordance with the highest international accounting standards

About KPMG KPMG in Jamaica is one of the largest and oldest professional services practices in Jamaica, providing audit, tax and advisory services to clients in the public and private sectors. The firm is a member of KPMG Caricom, a regional governance entity, comprising member firms in Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean (practicing in Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines), Trinidad and Tobago. There are two full service offices in Kingston and Montego Bay with over 200 professionals.

DunnCoxPrior to the founding of the Faculty of Law at the UWI Cave Hill Campus persons wishing to pursue Law had to make the trip to England to learn and hone their profession. UWI graduates have since then made strides in the profession starting their own firms or joining established firms. It was therefore without hesitation that in 1992 that the Partners of the firm DunnCox (Formerly Dunn, Cox, Orrett & Ashenheim) agreed to the contributed to the UWIDEF. Over the years the firm has contributed to the scholarship of a student in his/her second year of studies for the remaining duration of their programme.

Prospective contributors are encouraged to donate any amount that they can afford, to be pooled in the UWIDEF Scholarship Fund. Contributions have ranged between J$5,000 and J$250,000 and have been contributed by a mixofindividualsandsmall,mediumandlargefirms.

The intake of scholarship funds is J$18 Million since 2010 and last year, through the support of donors like you, assistance valued at over $3 Million was given to financiallyneedystudentswhomeetspecificcriteriaforneed and academic performance.

Each One Give One

From Spaulding Clarendon, Kimberley Foster was an Honour Roll student at Bishop Gibson High School for five consecutive years, 2004-2009. She entered the University of the West Indies in 2011 and immediately became involved in UWILEADS (UWI Leaders, Engaged, Activated, Dedicated, Ready to Serve). As a student in the Faculty of Science and Technology studying BioTechnology and Food Processing Kimberley also acted as Treasurer for the Chemical Society. This academic year Kimberley received one of the four UWIDEF Undergraduate Scholarships which she expressed has made an invaluable contribution to her educational development and by extension the development of Jamaica.

UWIDEF sponsored UWI’s participation in the annual Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run. The team comprised 226 runners and walkers drawn from students, staff and alumni who came out in support of the worthy causes.

This year one of the beneficiaries was the UWI Sickle Cell Unit which has benefited from the work of the UWIDEF.

The team ran under the banner of the UWI eFit Club which is an effort of the Sports Department to engage staff, students, and alumni in being active. The programme will include, in addition to participation in 5K runs, access to the sporting facilities, organised training and other exercise activities.

UWIDEF continues to seek opportunities to engage alumni and students around activities the will ultimately benefit the campus.
