Are You Ready? S everal Fulton School faculty members have views from their offices of our new Guerrieri Academic Commons, now under construction where Caruthers Hall once stood. It’s an impressive structure, the largest academic building on campus, and its carillon tower also makes among the tallest buildings in Salisbury. While much construction work remains to be done before the building opens next August, we should be thinking and planning how we will use this magnificent facility to enhance our students’ learning experiences and add to our University’s positive impact in the community. Of course, learning happens whenever and wherever people recognize the importance of expanding their mental and intellectual ability on the way to achieving their full human potential. Our Fulton colleagues James King, Joe Venosa and Jeanne Whitney saw that when they visited a middle school in Ghana in July, a facility in a village that until this summer had no running water. But the teachers were dedicated and the students were eager to learn: it’s helpful to remind ourselves, here in affluent America, that those are the essentials. We live in a land of great expectations, however, fueled by that affluence, and higher education in America sets young adults on a path to lifelong learning, professional success and engaged citizenship. That takes resources and, as long as we see a public good in making the opportunity available equally to all Americans, a public investment. Here on our campus, venerable Blackwell has served as our campus library since the 1950s, usually with running water, but for the kind of educational experience we want for our students today, and the size of campus we are, it no longer serves our needs. With a generous gift from the Guerrieri family that got the ball rolling, the people of Maryland are funding more than 90 percent of the cost of the Academic Commons. In a year, we can be sure that it will be the most popular spot on campus, with its café, faculty center, and an impressive venue for lectures and other gatherings, access to which will draw members of the campus and broader community through impressive open spaces. At its heart, though, the Academic Commons is a place where students and faculty, as well as other members of the campus and broader community, will gather to teach and learn, notably through the research process. Our faculty and staff colleagues in the Guerrieri Academic Commons will be eager to work with us to ensure that books, journals, databases and other research materials and resources are up to the task. On a campus noted nationally for its championing of undergraduate research, the opening of Academic Commons prompts us to ensure that discovery is central to all of all our academic programs. The ability to address research problems by working skillfully with relevant and appropriate information moves out students toward intellectual maturity and the ability to move into adult life, work and citizenship as creative and innovative thinkers. The students we recruit this fall and next spring to join us next year as freshmen will be eager to learn how our programs will make use of the new Guerrieri Academic Commons to give them the best academic experience we can. Students Experience Art History Abroad in Italy By Dr. Jennifer Liston

Fifteen students mostly from the FultonSchool traveled to Italy this summer aspart of ART 399 Venetian Art and the

Venice Biennale travel study course.

Led by art historians myself and Victoria Pass,the course focused on the visual arts in Venicefrom its creation as a republic in the middle agesthrough its role as host of the internationalBiennale, a massive international contemporaryart exhibition that includes works of art createdby more than 158 artists from more than 88 countries.

Students headed to Italy after a semester ofcoursework in Salisbury, visiting Florence and itsmany Italian Renaissance masterpieces beforetraveling to Venice. The course was unusual for itstrans-historical nature, in which students foundthemselves visiting an installation by acontemporary artist and a church built in the 15th century in the same day.

Students presented their analyses of ItalianRenaissance works of art in various museumsalong the way, participated in tours of theBiennale and sailed on vaporetti (water buses)along the Grand Canal.

The goal of the course was not only forstudents to engage historic and contemporaryworks of art in person and develop criticalthinking skills, but to foster the development of lifeskills (like independence, tolerance, acceptance,non-verbal communication, etc.) that are neededwhen one is placed in an international, cross-cultural situation.

For student Katie Mellos, this goal was met.“Traveling together creates a family of people

who understand you more than anyone else willwhen you get back, and it lets you come intoyourself by exploring, getting lost a lot, andlearning how to interact in another country withdifferent ways of life than ours,” she said.

The course is offered every other year, tocoincide with the Biennale and is open to studentsof all majors.

Art Professor Participates in NEH SeminarBy Dr. Victoria Pass

This past July, I was privileged toparticipate in an intensive NationalEndowment for the Humanities (NEH)

Seminar “Teaching the History of ModernDesign: The Canon and Beyond,” along with agroup of 25 other professors. The seminar wasorganized by design historians David Raizmanand Carma Gorman at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Each week, visiting scholars shared research ondiverse topics: the history of color trendforecasting, radical Italian design, the role ofpatent law in mid-century American design andthe history of Japanese design made for export.

Beyond those specific topics, though, David andCarma lead us in a broader month-longdiscussion about the challenges and possibilitiesresearching and teaching the history of design.We reflected on ways that we can build this youngfield into one that is inclusive, critical and valuableto our students.

As someone who researches fashion andidentity, the seminar gave me a valuable sense ofwhere my work fits in the wider field andintroduced me to a new group of trulyinterdisciplinary scholars. The most powerfullesson of the month was seeing how muchexcitement and joy there is in research anddiscovery, both for myself and my colleagues.

The excitement was electric on our many fieldtrips. We had unique access to collections at thePhiladelphia Museum of Art, the HagleyMuseum and Library, the Fashion Institute ofTechnology and Drexel’s own Fox HistoricCostume Collection.

When I reflected on the experience of themonth for our final group meeting, I couldn’t helpbut liken it to the five transformative experience ofthe protagonists of John Hughes’ classic film The Breakfast Club: plunked down in a new place,with new people.

Some of the most valuable lessons came frombeing a student again:sleeping on an uncomfortableplastic dorm mattress, stayingup too late doing reading,sitting in a classroom all day,trying to focus on lectures andparticipating in experientiallearning from the perspectiveof a student. It made merealize how important it is toshow your students where youare going in any given class,and over the course of thesemester, and not to lose sightof the big picture, howeverdrawn I am as a researcher tothe gritty details.

It has also encouraged me

to be creative in developing more activities andassignments that allow students to learn by doing.I’ve already integrated a number of ideas that theseminar gave me in my classes this semester, suchas a small group discussion of primary sourcesand a design research journal that students in myHistory of Graphic Design course are keepingthroughout the semester to collect works of designthat are related to those we talk about in class.

The month was not only transformative for meas an educator but also as a scholar. I came backto Salisbury exhausted but more mentallyenergized than ever to get back into the classroomand into the archives. Summer scholars looking at garments from the museum at the Fashion Institute of

Walker Earns Distinguished Faculty AwardBy Kim Moseman

Dr. Elsie Walkerremembered themoment she won

the Distinguished FacultyAward and feeling like a “tall poppy.”

The cinema studies facultyexplained that a commonphenomenon from her

homeland of New Zealand, referred to as “tallpoppy syndrome,” made it hard for her to processthat she had won. “Tall poppy syndrome” refersto the social tendency within New Zealand to putdown people who achieve success: in a field ofpoppies, a single flower rising above the others“should” be cut down.

“I really treasure how people reacted when myname was called. I’ll never forget it,” Walker said.“In New Zealand, they would have been just like,‘good on ya mate,’ and moved on.”

Walker still remembers having first heard ofthis award back in 2003 when she started here atSU. Mike Lewis of environmental studies had

won that year and Walker was blown away by hisimpact on the Salisbury community.

“I thought to myself, I hope one day, I’ll bedeserving of recognition like that,” Walker said.“It’s been such a challenging last five years, bothon a personal and professional level, that to havethis cultivating moment means all the more.”

With the passing of her father last yearand raising her two young daughters, CharlotteHope (6) and Dorothy Jane (1), all whilemaintaining a full-time career, this award gives hera new sense of pride in what she can accomplish.

“It’s a difficult balance, but I think both facetsof my life fuel each other,” Walker said. “I want tobe better for my daughters, and they make mewant to be better for this job.”

Along with teaching film and cinema courses,Walker is a co-editor of SU’s Literature/FilmQuarterly, chair of the English Majors RecruitmentCommittee, chair of the first-ever Women’s Forumat SU, mentor for SU’s student film festival andauthor of several published papers, journals andbooks. Yet, she has no intention of slowing down.

When looking to the future, Walker is remindedof something her mother always used to tell her:the importance of walking your talk (doing whatyou say you will).

“In terms of looking toward the future, I wantto keep building the film community on campus,and I want to keep walking my talk,” she said.“Receiving this award has inspired me to poureven more energy into this campus and feel moreconfident about making movements forprogressive change.”

She says she wants to continue to make adifference in her student’s lives and change theway they not only view film but also view the world.

“Everything I teach in film studies is essentiallygeared toward enhancing people’s capacity forempathy,” she said. “I hope that through teachingthis audiovisual media in an animated way, that Iwill help students become more sensorily engagedwith the world.”

Every Month Is Philanthropy Month! SU’sFaculty Donors By Judith Dressel

Dr. Frances Kendallhas served on thefaculty of the

Communications ArtsDepartment since 1989,and since 1992, she hascontributed to the SUFoundation to supportprograms in which she

believes. She has pledged her support via payrolldeduction since 2010, when she joined thePresident’s Club level of giving ($1,000/year).

Frances allocates her gifts to support not onlyher department’s needs, but also the FultonLiberal Arts programs of dance and theatre, theJustin McJilton Scholarship fund, and ourclassical radio station WSCL. In addition, shehas always supported student activities in thetelevision and film areas, especially afterfounding SUTV, and she completely funded theSU Student Video Festival that was heldannually for six years. She continues to support

the SU Film Festival. Frances was initially inspired to join the

President's Club as an act of gratitude thatSU’s medical insurance provided for thequality medical care, which made all thedifference to her. And, she adds that thepayroll deduction option makes giving“absolutely painless financially” to supportsome of her favorite programs on campus withher own charitable giving.

Dr. T. Paul Pfeiffer joined SalisburyUniversity’s faculty in 1980, and before that, hereceived his B.A. here. He has served as artisticdirector of the Theatre Program for 26 years,and his sense of belonging to the University’scommunity has inspired his continuing gifts tothe Theatre Program.

As co-chair of the Department of Music,Theatre and Dance, Paul has seen lots of goalsimpeded by the simple lack of available funds.His giving has been directed to help make thosethings possible and to encourage others to give

to help the program.With their personaldonation, TheatreProgram faculty havefunded numerous needsand upgrades. Thepayroll deduction of hisannual pledged donationis an easy and automatic

way to make regular contributions to the needsnear and dear to him.

In Paul’s words: “Giving has surely increasedmy sense of belonging, and deepest debt, to thisUniversity for the really great life it has affordedme. I am more than happy to have anothermeans of repaying my debt.”

Art Major Library of Congress InternshipSU art major James Harrison successfully

completed an internship as a Library ofCongress 2015 Junior Fellow.

Out of 800 applicants, Harrison was one of the36 junior fellows chosen. Aside from SU, thejunior fellows included students from national andregional schools, such as the University of Hawaii,University of Nevada, Columbia University and

John Hopkins University. The 2015 junior fellowsalso included international students from NicolausCopernicus University in Torun, Poland, and theSorbonne University in Paris, France.

Harrison was one of three student assigned tothe Conservation Division. During his 10-weekinternship, Harrison worked on outreach projectsdesigning educational materials for high schoolsstudents and public libraries. His projects included

designing promotional materials, such as postersand bookmarks, to encourage the conservationand preservation of books, photographs, digitalfiles and papers.

Harrison is a sophomore with a concentrationin graphic design and hopes to enter the videogame industry after earning his Bachelor of FineArts in 2018.

Fulton Faculty SabbaticalProjects • Fall 2015Brooke Rogers, ART Rogers’ sabbatical proposal has three features:sustained work in his local painting studio, short-term trips to major museum and gallery canters,and a focused campaign to establish arelationship with a commercial gallery. Theculmination of these efforts will be a solo show ofdrawings at the Academy Art Museum inEaston, MD, and a solo show of paintings at theSU Downtown Campus Gallery.

Michele Schlehofer, PSYC Dr. Schlehofer will develop two areas of researchduring this sabbatical leave; 1) apply and submita Research Experiences for Undergraduates(REU) Site Application to the National ScienceFoundation; and 2) wrap up data analyses on twopreviously conducted projects on the TreatOrientation Model (TOM) and submitmanuscripts for publication.

To Kill A Mockingbird OpensTheatre SeasonThe Bobbi Biron Theatre Program begins

its season with performances of To Kill AMockingbird, running October 8-11 and

15-18 in the Fulton Hall Black Box Theatre. Paul Pfeiffer, artistic director of the Bobbi

Biron Theatre Program, leads the creative team,including guest set designer Ethan Krupp,costume designer Leslie Yarmo, lighting designersTom Anderson and Michael Cummings, andprojections designer John Raley. The stagemanager is Samantha Olsen, with technicaldirection by Tom Anderson.

The cast features Cameron Mason (ScoutFinch), Jacob Nail (Jem Finch), Zach Williams(Atticus Finch) and many other talented, youngactors.

Associate Professor Ethan Krupp ofBloomsburg University (Pennsylvania) is serving asthe guest set designer for the show as part of hissabbatical study of being and hosting guest artists.

Ethan has been part of the Theatre and DanceDivision at BU since the fall of 2006, where heserves as the technical director, as well as lighting,scenery, properties and sound designer.

PACE HappeningsPresidential Citizen Scholars

The Presidential Citizen Scholars (PCS)program brings together students from across theuniversity to participate in a selective programpromoting civic engagement. PCS offerssophomores and juniors of all majorsopportunities to become engaged in the politicallife of the community and to develop habits ofdemocratic citizenship. Coordinated by theInstitute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement(PACE), Scholars participate in a three-semesterprogram in preparation to become communityleaders now and in the future. The programrequires the completion of two non-credit bearingcourses in consecutive spring semesters as well asparticipation in select campus and communities.Activities prepare Scholars to design andimplement a community based civic engagementproject. Students who complete the requirementsof the program receive a Presidential CitizenScholars distinction on their transcript and arerecognized at graduation.

Within the next month, President Dudley-Eshbach will distribute invitations to apply forparticipation in the 2016-2018 cohort tosophomores meeting program requirements. Inthe application process, students are asked toanswer the question “If you could change onething about your community, what would it be?”

Leadership Changes at PACE After a successful term as managing director,

Robby Sheehan returned full-time to his positionas SU’s deputy chief of staff and director ofgovernment and community relations. Dr. SandyPope (Teacher Education) and Dr. Sarah Surak(Political Science and Environmental Studies) havetransitioned into positions of co-director ofPACE. PACE is a non-partisan institutecommitted to undergraduate learning that sparksinterest in public affairs and civic engagement.PACE acts as a resource center for localgovernment, nonprofits, and other public groups.To this end, PACE coordinates a variety ofactivities including the Presidential CitizenScholars program (see above), the facultydevelopment program Civic Engagement Acrossthe Curriculum (see below), SU’s EconomicInequality initiative and various public events. Civic Engagement Across the CurriculumThis fall nine faculty members from across the

campus are participating in PACE’s annual CivicEngagement Across the Curriculum (CEAC)professional development seminar. GeralynAdams (English), Vinita Agerwal (CommunicationArts), Gina Bloodworth (Geography), DavidBurns (Communication Arts), Carole Champagne(Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies),Brian Hill (Economics and Finance), DeryaKulavuz-Onal (English), Dean Ravizza (Healthand Sports Sciences) and Diallo Sessoms (TeacherEducation) will, over the course of 10 weeks,incorporate a civic engagement component into anew or existing course. Upon successfullycompletion, faculty members receive a $500professional development allowance from thedean of their home academic school. Throughthe CEAC program PACE attempts to inspire,inform and impact public affairs thought civicengagement education. CEAC provides facultywith all ranges of experience tools to successfullyincorporate civic engagement within theclassroom experience. Alumni Spotlight: Brendan GlowackiBrendan Glowacki

graduated fromSU in May 2015

with a B.S. in nursing –and a life-long love ofglass-making, thanks toArt DepartmentAssistant ProfessorSteven Durow.

Brendan grew up in afamily that encouragedtrying new things. Fromthe age of 16, while inhigh school in Calvert

County, Brendan was an EMT and chose nursingas an ideal field offering puzzles to be solved everyday. Family and friends recommended SU’s

nursing program and during a visit he really liked the campus and the school’s small, friendlysize. He committed to SU in the spring of hisjunior year.

In his freshman-year dorm, the RAs introducedBrendan to the hot-glass program housed inFulton Hall. He had an immediate interest andSteven Durow encouraged him to take a classevery semester regardless of his nursing course-load. Brendan thanks Steven for being veryunderstanding of the nursing program’s scheduledemands. Once he overcame being up close to theglass furnaces’ intense fire and heat, Brendan washooked on the creative freedom that hot glass-making allows.

The Art Department’s beginning glass coursefulfills the General Education art requirement,

and students from all majors continue to take glassfor all their college years. Steve shared: “Brendanis a perfect example of a dedicated glass studentwho continued to explore his love of glassalongside his commitment to his major track.”

SU is unique in allowing students theopportunity to experience this unique art formregardless of their chosen track, and the hot-glass program is unique in the UniversitySystem of Maryland campuses. Some studentscome to SU specifically to study glass, but most,like Brendan, found glass by accident and fell inlove with the material and the process. Thissemester, Brendan is enrolled in SU’s graduatenursing program and looks forward to futureopportunities working with glass.

Alumni Spotlight: Mark A BrennanSU alum Mark A. Brennan received his

B.A. in sociology in 1992. Inspired by hiseducation and experiences at SU, he went

on to earn his Ph.D. at Penn State University,where he is today on the faculty as UNESCOChair in Community, Leadership and YouthDevelopment. His research and programs focuson youth 15-25 years old around the world andis involved with the U.N. developing policy toshape the future.

Mark grew up in northeast Pennsylvania andvisited the then-Salisbury State College with afriend from high school. He fell in love with thecampus and the community, but “wandered intocollege with no clear direction” as a first-generation college student. He was put on hisfuture path by faculty members he encountered in

and out of sociology classes, notably Drs. CharlieCipolla, Philip Bosserman and Allan Pappas,whom he describes as incredible teacher-scholarsand on-the-ground activists for civil rights, andwho lived high-quality scholarship with appliedprogramming for social change. His move to PennState was the logical one for him and was inspiredby SU’s faculty who created great morale byconnecting faculty with students. Mark feels hiscareer replicates theirs in combining communitydevelopment with applied research.

Mark’s research is global, taking him to Africaand increasingly to Asia and Central and SouthAmerica. He likes being part of the UNESCOteam, which can respond quickly to crises; anexample was a program addressing youthextremism in Paris that was developed

immediately followingthe Charlie Hebbdo killingsearlier this year. Markand his students haveundertaken research inCambodia, Vietnam,South Africa andIreland. His work isfocused on community-based social change andjustice; youth empowerment to make choices thatare good not only for themselves but for theworld; and identifying problems, shaping mediacampaigns and developing action efforts to bringchange for the future.

As Mark tweeted: “I owe it all to my start atSalisbury University!”

Departmental ReportsARTPainting major Megan Burak’s work “IDon’t Want You to See” won Best in Show atthe Center for the Arts in Ocean City in Julyas a part of the Beverly Bassford MemorialJuried Show.

Steven Durow’s series Bound was onexhibition at the Dorchester Center for theArts in Cambridge through October 5.Drawing from the body, as well as from sacredobjects, primarily Indian Buddhistarchitecture, these evocative forms aresimultaneously constrained and defined bytheir restraints and explore the formalrelationships in the bound form. The raw andscarred texture of these works shows an aspectof the glass that is rarely explored. These glassworks are designed to show the scars of timeand the beauty that comes from imperfection.This work was also a part of a two-personexhibition at the galleries of the HowardCounty Arts Council in Baltimore in May.Durow’s large-scale work Crescent is at a year-

long public exhibition in Carbondale, CO, andhis work My Other Half is part of the 2015-16Art on the Streets exhibition in ColoradoSprings. His work, At the River’s Edge, wasinstalled at the River’s Edge Apartments inMay in Salisbury. Durow worked with a teamof students for a year to construct the 14-foot-high glass and steel sculpture.

Salisbury UniversityGalleries Manager C.Tara Gladden andAssistant Professor ofNew Media Art DavidGladden were curatedinto David Linton’s “TheLuminous Surface” showin the University Galleryof Fulton hall, whichruns from throughOctober 31. “TheLuminous Surface” is amulti-media exhibitionthat includes video art,LED, fluorescent, andneon light sculptures, 3-D movies, andfabricated objects.Together, they screeneda visual music piecetitled “Ylla Dreams,”and David showed a video sculpture titled“The Tower,” which is a commentary on theEastern Shore’s changing landscape of cellphone towers and security cameras.

Visiting Adjunct Professor Jee Hwang’s work“Island” was included in the group exhibition“Summer Exhibition” at the Elizabeth V.Sullivan Gallery in Orangeburg, NY. Theexhibition, which was curated by NaomiCampbell, was on view from July 11-September 26. “Island” will also be a part of agroup exhibition at the Porter ContemporaryGallery in Brooklyn, NY. The work “Holder ofthe Voice” was included in the summer groupexhibition at Porter Contemporary Gallery inNew York City. In January, Hwang willparticipate in the Wassaic Artist ResidencyProgram in New York and will focus oncreating a new body of works during thatmonth. Jinchul Kim was invited to show his work atthe Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery in Cleveland,OH, for the “Cinema 06” International JuriedShow, which is on view through November 14.

Several students from Jennifer Liston’s ART201 Introduction to Art History courseattended a lecture by classical archaeologistand NYU Professor Joan Breton Connelly atthe Academy Art Museum in Easton onSeptember 25. Titled “The ParthenonEnigma,” the lecture presented Connelly’s re-interpretation of the east frieze of theParthenon on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece,as detailed in her latest book also called TheParthenon Enigma, which was released in 2014.The lecture was part of the Kittredge-WilsonSpeaker Series.

Victoria Pass presented “ConsumingSpectacles of Difference in FashionMagazines” at Consuming/Culture: Womenand Girls in Print and Pixels, an internationalconference on the representation of gender inprint and digital culture held at OxfordBrookes University in June. Her paperexamined a photo spread shot in Moroccofeaturing the actress Lupita Nyong’o in theJuly 2014 issue of Vogue. She read thephotographs in the context of the long historyof Orientalist fantasies in fashion magazines,but she argued that the photographs ofNyong’o deploy these tropes in ways that havethe potential to trouble the traditional powerdynamics of such images.

Works by Dean Peterson and Paul Flexnerwere accepted to the national juried show,“The American Landscape,” at the MarylandFederation of Art in Annapolis. Paul receivedsecond place for his work “Soho Evening.”The show was juried by John Morell, chair ofthe Department of Art and Art History atGeorgetown University. Out of more than 600entries from across the United States, 80 artistswere selected for the exhibition.

In the spring, DeanPeterson receivedawards for Best Useof Medium for his“Moonfish” in anexhibition titled“Either Fish orFowl” at theMaritime Museumin Annapolis andBest in Show for apiece in a membersshow at the ArtInstitute andGallery. His work“About Clouds” wason view at the Art Gallery at the University ofMaryland College Park, and “Casa del Aztec”at the Art Institute and Gallery in Salisbury.

Bill Wolff and Evan Fitzgerald showed“New Paintings and Sculpture” at the ArtLeague of Ocean City from June 29-August 8.

COMMUNICATION ARTSVinita Agarwal served as a peer reviewer formanuscripts submitted to the journals AmericanJournal of Public Health and the Journal of AppliedCommunications Research. Agarwal will presenttwo research papers from her qualitative studyexamining multiple sclerosis patients’perception of treatment uncertainty andprovider relationship and patient framing ofdisability support. The research was supportedby the University Research Council’s SUFaculty Mini-Grant program. Both researchpapers were competitively selected for theHealth Communication Division and theDisability Studies Caucus, respectively, at theNational Communication Association’s 101stAnnual Convention at Las Vegas. The papersare titled “I Am Not Willing to Gamble:Relapsing-Remitting Multiple SclerosisPatients’ Communicative Framing ofTreatment Uncertainty and ProviderRelationship” and “You’re Not Going to beThat Way: Patient Framing of Disability andSupport in the Multiple Sclerosis DiseaseDomain.”

Jennifer Cox presented a research papertitled “Medium Matters: Examining NewsDefinitions on Twitter and Facebook” at theAssociation for Education in Journalism andMass Communication annual conference inSan Francisco, CA, on August 6. Her studyrevealed television, newspaper and online newsorganizations use different strategies tocommunication with audiences on Twitter andFacebook. Cox also received word her article“To Tweet or to Post – That is the Question:Examining Differences in News Content acrossSocial Media Platforms” will be published inNewspaper Research Journal in fall 2016.

Chrys Egan ends her three-year term as co-chair for the Popular Culture Association inthe South Conference this year. She remains aco-chair of the Women and LeadershipConference and the communication chair forthe International Leadership Association (ILA)women’s affinity group. In October, she willtravel to Barcelona, Spain, for the ILAconference to present four projects:“Advancing a New Model for (Women’s)Leadership Identities Construction” to bepublished as a book chapter in AdvancingTheories of Women and Leadership; “Hungry forChange: The Hunger Games’ Illustrations ofInequality and Potential Empowerment” to bepublished as a book chapter in Teen Dreams andLost Girls; “Women’s Paths to SportLeadership: Emerging, Continuing andDeveloping as Leaders”; and “Internet Privacyand Personal Security” presented in bothEnglish and Spanish with John Patrick Murphyof InterAmerican Business AssociatesSpecialized Security Systems. She also headsan SU Engineer Girl (EG) program with anEngineering Information Foundation grantthat allows 24 local middle-school girls toreceive free monthly computer programminglessons on campus. EG training faculty includeCMAT adjunct instructor Elisabeth Masonand computer science students Noor Shadidand Charles Rusk. Egan and Mason had anEG poster presentation at the SU ResearchDay; the EG girls will present their finalwebsites, animations and original apps at theEngineer Girl Showcase on March 12. HerCMAT 430 Political Communication studentsco-sponsored with PACE the SU StudentVoting Forum and with POSC the MultipleDimensions of Inequality lecture inSeptember.

Bryan Horikami will attend the NationalCommunication Association conference in Las Vegas in November to chair a panel titled“50+ Years of Communication Scholarshipand Counting: Papers in Honor of Thomas W.Benson.” Dr. Benson is the Edwin EarleProfessor of Rhetoric at the Pennsylvania StateUniversity and founder of CRITNET, theonline listserver for communication arts.Horikami will also participate in discussionsrelated to being a department chair.

Vanessa Junkin, a December 2011 CMATgraduate, returned to the department thissemester as an adjunct faculty member. Junkin,who has worked at The Daily Times in Salisburyfor four years, is teaching CMAT 240Introduction to Journalism and Public Relations.

Frances Kendall received training in AdobePremiere nonlinear editing software at theMaine Media Workshops this summer. Theweek-long, intense workshop was lead by MarkChesak, whose editing credits includenumerous documentaries, shows andinvestigative journalism segments for theHistory Channel, National Geographic andNBC Sports.

Associate Dean Darrell Newton receiveda second book contract, this time for ananthology on British television and race. Thecollection, Adjusting the Contrast, will includeeight media scholars from the U.S. and UK,including CMAT’s own Jim Burton.

Haven Simmons taught federal emergencymanagement multi-hazards courses for highereducation this summer at Washington StateUniversity in Spokane and a host of schools inVirginia Beach, including Old DominionUniversity. He was the keynote speaker onOctober 8 at a public works-emergencymanagement conference in Portland, OR,discussing commercial and social media duringnatural and man-made disasters.

CONFLICT ANALYSIS & DISPUTE RESOLUTIONSoosaipillai I. Keethaponcalan’s bookchapter, titled “Dragon in the Teardrop:Regional Dynamics of Increasing ChinesePresence in Sri Lanka,” was published in GlobalChina: Internal and External Reaches, edited by PakNung, Wong and Cheng, Yu Shek.Keethaponcalan also presented a paper titled“Reshaping the Non-Aligned Movement:Challenges and Vision” at the InternationalConference on the 60th anniversary of the1955 Asian-African Conference held inBandung, Indonesia. The conference was heldon June 4-6 in Gedung Merdeka, theconference hall where African and Asianleaders met in 1955.

Over the summer, Susan McCarty’s storycollection Anatomies, was reviewed favorably inPublisher’s Weekly, Kirkus Reviews and Esquireonline. She was a featured guest on theDelmarva Public Radio show Delmarva Todayand Write the Book, a podcast and radio showout of Burlington, VT. She gave readings atthe Black Squirrel in Washington, D.C., andThe Brookline Booksmith in Boston.

John A. Nieves recently has had 13 of hisnew poems published in the following nationaljournals: Poetry Northwest, Valparaiso PoetryReview, Superstition Review, Drunken Boat,Salamander, Slipstream, Bluestem and Route 7 Review. His poem “Random Pulls from theBody Tarot” was part of an audio featureon Drunken Boat’s website. His poem “BackwardBinoculars and Postage for Corpses” was anaudio feature on Sugar House Review’s Sounds ofSugar podcast. His poem “Tremble Island” wasa finalist for the 49th Parallel Award in poetryfrom Bellingham Review, and his manuscript“Nothing like a Ghost” was a finalist for theLarry Levis Prize from Four Way Books.

Derya Kulavuz-Onal’s peer-reviewedarticle “Using Netnography to Explore theCulture of Online Language TeachingCommunities” appeared in CALICO Journal’sspecial issue on qualitative research and CALL(computer-assisted language learning).CALICO, a high-impact journal in the field ofCALL, is the official journal of theinternational Computer-Assisted LanguageInstruction Consortium. Kulavuz-Onal alsopresented a paper on language teacherdevelopment through telecollaboration at theInternational Language Teacher EducationConference in Minneapolis in May andanother paper on the discursive construction ofcommunity identity in online teachercommunities at the International Society ofLanguage Studies in Albuquerque in June.

Throughout summer 2015, Manav Rattiheld a research fellowship at AustralianNational University, where he delivered twopublic lectures, including an invited jointlecture for the Australian-American FulbrightCommission, which incorporated his researchas a Fulbright Scholar at New York University.He presented at the International Conventionof Asia Scholars in Adelaide, Australia;delivered a keynote address and a gallery-museum lecture at the University of the FraserValley in British Columbia, Canada; andpresented at the Affect Theory conference inPennsylvania, organized by the editors of TheAffect Theory Reader. He published invitedarticles in Journal for Religion and Transformationin Contemporary Society and Postcolonial Texts.Ratti’s book, The Postsecular Imagination:Postcolonialism, Religion, and Literature, has beencited and reviewed in numerous leadingjournals, including the U.K.-based Journal ofPostcolonial Writing, which marked the book as“daring, fine, and nuanced [...] impressive andscrupulously researched [...] the firstmonograph of its kind.” One of India’s mostprestigious newspapers, The Hindu, reviewedRatti’s book as “written evocatively […] takesa balanced, centrist position […] deserves tobe closely read, in text and in spirit.”

In October, new faculty member AndrewScahill publishes his book The Revolting Child inHorror Cinema: Youth Rebellion and QueerSpectatorship from Palgrave Macmillan. Drawingtogether film theory, queer theory, childhoodstudies and reception studies, it examines the“revolting child” in such films as The Bad Seed,Village of the Damned, Rosemary’s Baby, TheExorcist and The Omen. Scahill argues thatmonstrous child stands in for the queer childby taking on its various incarnations: the childwith a secret, the child “taken over” bymonstrosity in adolescence, the changelingchild and the cabal of queer youth.

HISTORYAdam Bronson presented at the Associationfor Asian Studies Conference in Taipei in June.His paper was titled “Two Cultures: KuwabaraTakeo, F. R. Leavis, and the Democratizationof the Literary Arts in Postwar Japan andBritain.”

This June, Céline Carayon presented apaper titled “An Eloquence of the Body:Native Kinetic Communication and Power inthe Early Atlantic” at the Seventh AnnualMeeting of the Native American andIndigenous Studies Association in Washington,D.C. Carayon also was awarded a month-longcompetitive fellowship at the OmohundroInstitute of Early American History andCulture in Williamsburg, VA, where sheparticipated in the interdisciplinary LapidusInitiative inaugural Scholars’ Workshop in July 2015 and revised a chapter for hermanuscript in progress, Beyond Words. At theannual meeting of the American Society forEthnohistory in November, she will present apaper titled “‘The Most Thorough Traitorsand Deceivers’: Embodied Languages ofAuthenticity and Distrust in the late-17th century French Caribbean” in a panel onCommunication and Empire. In addition,Carayon has been involved in organizing boththe new Fulton Public Humanities Programand SU’s fourth annual Native AmericanHeritage Month in November 2015.

Dean Kotlowski published a book chaptertitled “Resisting Nazism: Paul V. McNutt, theUnited States, and Hitler’s Germany, 1933-1945” in the volume Transcultural Encounters,Kari Alenius and Veli-Pekka Lehtola, eds.(Rovaniemi, Finland: Historical Association ofNorthern Finland, 2015). Over the summer, hegave three public lectures and presented threeconference papers in Australia – in Adelaide,Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney – and alsodelivered a conference paper in Jinan, China.Kotlowski is serving as a consultant to theNational Archives as they reconfigure thepublic exhibits at the Richard Nixon Libraryand Museum, where he also recently presentedhis research. In September, he participated in apost-screening discussion of the film Rescue inthe Philippines: Refuge from the Holocaust at theHolocaust Memorial Center in Michigan.Earlier in the year, he spoke at similar events atCANDLES Holocaust Museum in TerreHaute, IN, and at the Jewish Center ofPrinceton, NJ.

Aparajita Mukhopadhyay presents a paperat the Annual Conference of the Society ofHistory of Technology in Albuquerque, NMMexico in October. She also has two bookchapters in press: “Crime in Transit: RailwayCrime and Order in Colonial India” in E. Rashkow, et al., eds. Memory, Identity and theColonial Encounter in India: Essays in Honour of

MODERN LANGUAGES &INTERCULTURAL STUDIESThe 43rd annual Oktoberfest takes place onthe Fulton Lawn Wednesday, October 14, from11 a.m.-3 p.m. This year’s event features thePhiladelphia German Brass Band, Germanfood, games with great prizes, SU clubs andlocal vendors, a German costume contest,German singing and dancing, as well as a beergarden for those old enough to drink and withproper ID. The rain location is the WicomicoRoom, Guerrieri University Center.

Claire Kew presents an hour-long conferencesession on French language pedagogy at thisNovember’s national American Council on theTeaching of Foreign Languages conference inSan Diego, CA.

Corinne Pubill received a book contract forher upcoming publication María TeresaAndruetto: Mujer, Identidad y Dictadura. Thiscollection of articles, edited by Pubill andFrancisco Brignole (UNC - Wilmington),discusses the work of the Argentinean writerMaría Teresa Andruetto and will be releasedin spring 2016 through Albatros Editions (incollaboration with the UNC - Chapel Hill).

Aurélie Van de Wiele’s review of the bookJean Tortel, Des Livres Aux Jardins, by CatherineSoulier, appears in the next issue of The French Review.

MUSICColleen Clark spent a week in Augustrecording with producer, performer andformer Harvard Fellow Erin McKeown. Therecordings will appear on Clark’s secondalbum of original compositions, slated forrelease in spring 2016. Clark also was invitedby McKeown to engineer an album onlocation in New York in October.

Linda Cockey presented at the NationalKeyboard Pedagogy Conference held inLombard, IL, from July 30-August 1. Cockeypresented with Gail Berenson (Ohio University)on “25 Years of Pioneering History of Pianists’Wellness” and also reviewed the many resourcesavailable to pianists concerning injuryprevention, small handed pianists, ergonomicsand performance anxiety. While in the Chicagoarea, Cockey visited with Reginald Gerig, authorof Famous Pianists and Their Technique. Cockeycontributed to the second edition of this text in2007, where she added a section on musicianwellness resources for pianists. In early August, William Folger once againjoined members of the Bel Canto Company,Inc., a professional vocal ensemble based inGreensboro, NC, to perform for the 41stHinshaw Music Publishing CelebrationConference. The second half of the concertfeatured the premiere of the chamber versionof the six-movement work Canticle of the Living,by Sir John Rutter, with the composerconducting.

Nan Baker Richerson also presented at theNational Keyboard Pedagogy Conference.Along with Rebecca Belleo, Brenda Dillon andEmily Book McGree, she presented on “TheInspired RMM Classroom,” focusing onteaching adult beginners who want to learnbeginning piano for their own enjoyment.Richerson discussed developing a teachingbalance and reviewed ways that adults canachieve effective body/weight distributionwhile playing. She lectured on obtaining agood balance between melody andaccompaniment and used specific examples toengage the audience.

Jeffrey Schoyen performed with ARTEK,New York City’s premier early music ensemble.Titled Music from the City of Bernini, theprogram featured the composers Stradella,Corelli and Scarlatti. Internationally acclaimedcountertenors Ryland Angel and EricBrenner added to the unique quality of theconcerts. The program includedSchoyen performing a solo cello sonata byFilippo Amedei. Concerts were conducted atSt. Ignatius of Antioch Church (New YorkCity) and Miller Chapel (Princeton University).

Eric Shuster wasinvited to perform withhis duo, Steady State,for the Unruly SoundsFestival in Princeton,NJ, in September. Heand his duo partner,percussionist-brotherTim Shuster, presentedtheir newlycommissioned workLittle Things byPrinceton composerWally Gunn. LittleThings is a half-hourwork that combines

sound, speech andmovement to capture therelationship of siblings. Afilm for Little Things will bereleased in late fall 2015.Steady State presented aprogram featuring LittleThings at SalisburyUniversity in July.

Jerry Tabor served asexecutive producer forseveral recordings releasedby Neuma Records:Dariusz Mazurowski’s Non Acoustic Symphony(Polish electroacousticmusic); Airi Yoshioka’sSueños Místicos(contemporary LatinAmerican music for violin);and Jane Rigler’sRerefactions (improvisedacoustic and electroacoustic music for flute andother instruments, performed by Rigler and acast of esteemed jazz musicians). His mostrecent project is an album of rare solo worksby composer Roger Reynolds. The albummarks a unique collaboration between NeumaRecords and publisher C.F. Peters in the albumtitled the imagE-imAge set, and the 12corresponding musical scores are being “co-released” this month. Tabor also managedcollaborative efforts among the artists andnumerous experts in various fields, includingSU’s own David Burns (CMAT) and JohnMosher (ART) and others from around thecountry. Tabor is also establishing a musicpublishing house to make experimental,unreleased electroacoustic and othercontemporary music available to performersand scholars in an effort to extend Neuma’s26-year-long legacy of fine contemporaryrecordings.

John Wesley Wright and collaborativepianist Veronica T. Knier accompaniedvoice majors John Wixted and Meredith Jones to the 2015 NationalAssociational of Teachers of Singing NationalStudents Auditions, held at the University ofNorth Carolina Greensboro. Representing SU,the State of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic

region, Wixted (now a junior) and Jones (classof spring 2015) were one of 14 in theirrespective categories chosen from across thecountry to compete at NATS Nationals,making them among the one percentile ofcollege vocalists who participated. A 1987 and1988 summer alum of the Brevard MusicCenter (Brevard, NC), Wright returned after26 years to the acclaimed Brevard MusicFestival as a guest artist, performing a concertfeaturing the soloists from the AmericanSpiritual Ensemble. Wright’s doctoraldissertation and the SU Opera Workshop’sperformance last spring were cited in TheBulletin of the Society for American Music in anessay by Copland scholar Daniel E. Matherstitled “Copland and Bernstein at the Quarter-Century Mark.”

POLITICAL SCIENCEMichael O’Loughlin wrote a column on theTranspacific Partnership for The Daily Timestitled “Corporate Trade or Fair Trade?,”which appeared in August. O’Loughlin wasinterviewed by Don Rush on Delmarva Today,WSDL public radio, to discuss potentialpolitical candidates and to reflect on the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.O’Loughlin gave a speech titled “Prospects forPeace: The Politics of the Iran NuclearAgreement and U.S. Imperial Foreign Policy” atAsbury Methodist Church in Salisbury onSeptember 13.

Echo Leaver published two chapters onteaching neuroscience to undergraduates in thejournal Teaching Neuroscience: Practical Activities foran Engaged Classroom: “Freezer Neglect”(pp. 660-665) and “Change Blindness” (pp. 666-669).

Suzanne Osman and her student RubyOrth co-authored, “Perpetration Experienceand Gender Predicting Empathy with aStranger or Acquaintance Rapist,” which hasbeen accepted for publication in the studentresearch journal Modern Psychological Studies

Debra Truitt was awarded the Governor’sVolunteer Service Certificate for her 15 yearsof service as an executive committee memberof the University System of MarylandWomen’s Forum (USMWF). She has held thefollowing positions over the years: chair of theUSMWF, chair of the Professional StaffDevelopment Award Committee, committeemember for the Student Scholarship AwardCommittee and committee member for theFaculty Research Award Committee.

George Whitehead had several grantsfunded. He received a grant for $128,382 fromthe Governor’s Office on Service andVolunteerism (GOSV) to fundShoreCorps/PALS for the 21st year.Additionally, he received funding from theGOSV and Community Foundation of theEastern Shore to do two “Day to Serve”projects. One of these projects was at CamdenCommunity Garden in partnership withPinehurst Elementary School. The other is asurvey with MAC, Inc., with regard to helpingone another live in their homes longer.

SOCIOLOGYDiane Illig lead the Safe Spaces programMay 14-15, which trained more than 500people from eight different state agencies. InJune, five trainers completed the “Train theTrainer” workshop for Safe Spaces: BryanHorikami (CMAT), Lincoln Gibbs (Health andSport Sciences), Kellsey Plude (SU SOCImajor), Kristen Tull (University of Baltimore)and Darlene Mitchell (Maryland Departmentof Environment). Safe Spaces was awarded a$1,000 grant from Target in July.

Alex Stoner published a book and a refereedjournal article during the summer. His book,Freedom in the Anthropocene: Twentieth CenturyHelplessness in the Face of Climate Change, waspublished by Palgrave Macmillan. Accordingto one reviewer: “[Freedom in the Anthropocene]highlights the urgent need to situate climatechange and related environmental issues andphenomena in the context of rigorous criticalsocial theory. The challenge of ethically soundaction geared towards ‘saving the planet’ (and,by implication, humanity) must be understood

in light of – and in relation to – structuralcircumstances that thwart solutions toproblems identified in the debate about theAnthropocene, on the basis of conscientiousindividual actions and decisions.” Stoner’sbook will be reviewed in forthcoming issues ofClimate & Capitalism and Logos: A Journal ofModern Society and Culture. His article “Critiqueand Transformation: On the HypotheticalNature of Ecosystem Service Value and itsNeo-Marxist, Liberal and PragmatistCriticisms” is forthcoming in the journalEcological Economics. Stoner presented hisresearch at the International Social TheoryConsortium at the University of Cambridge,U.K. (June, 2015) and at the InternationalSociological Association in Chicago (August,2015). Stoner is preparing a polemical piece onclimate justice activism, which will appear in aforthcoming issue of New Politics.

THEATRETom Anderson served as the interncoordinator this summer for junior technicaltheatre major Madeline Stiso. Stiso internedat the Greenside family of Venues at theEdinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh,Scotland. She was one of a large crew ofstudent technicians from around the world thatworked at Greenside and hundreds of othervenues around Edinburgh for the month-longfestival. Stiso primarily worked on shows at theGreenside Church Studio Theater located onthe Royal Terrace. She also had a brief stint atthe Nicholson Square Theatres. In addition,she was part of the over-all set-up and take-down crew for the Greenside theatres.

John Raley served as the assistant set designeron Maurice Hine’s Tappin’ Thru Life at theDelaware Theatre Center. The show runsthrough October 11.

Leslie Yarmo worked as an assistantcostume designer in New York City for thefeature film 37 about the famous 1964 KittyGenovese murder. Some key costumes for thefilm were rented from the SU costumecollection and featured in an articlepublished in “The Arts” section of The NewYork Times. In addition, Yarmo was able toobtain an internship on the film for JennyPhelps, a spring theatre performancegraduate. Phelps worked primarily with theproduction coordinator of the film usingskills she acquired as a stage manager in thetheatre program. Yarmo has made two tripsto New York City this fall with SU studentsto assist on a professional photo-shoot for anongoing stylized Roman project on which shehas been working. The students also assistedin the rental-pull of costumes for SUtheatre’s production of To Kill A Mockingbird.

How to Teach a Kid to Listen: CammaranoDoes Philosophy in Local SchoolsBy Dr. Timothy Stock

At the end of a typical session ofphilosophy enrichment at PinehurstElementary School, SU students in Dr.

Cristina Cammarano’s PHIL 207 Philosophy ofEducation course will turn the tables on their 7-year-old interlocutors, asking each child for anexample of something learned from his or herfellow students.

“This is a great way to end the session, becauseyou are teaching them to be attentive to otherpeople, and it provides the validation thateveryone in the session has contributed to thediscussion,” Cammarano said.

According to her, philosophy is the ideal toolfor teaching children how to take other peopleseriously, and this can be considered part of thefoundation for higher moral behaviors such asself-control, respect, tolerance and humility.

“You can think of it as developing a sort ofmoral attentiveness,” she said.

The program is modeled after the MontclairState University “Philosophy in Schools”curriculum pioneered by Matthew Lipman, AnnSharp and others, including Cammarano’s ownmentor Meghan Laverty. Salisbury University’sprogram began in 2014 as a form of enrichmentfor first graders with high reading skills, facilitatedby Cammarano and Pinehurst enrichmentteacher Jodi Woods. The program has sinceexpanded to Joann Todd’s second gradehomeroom and involves the entire class.

Cammarano has also worked with mathteacher Keith Donoway at Bennett High Schoolto start a Philosophy Club for interested students,and she feels there are unique benefits topracticing philosophy at each developmentalstage.

“A second grader will see benefits primarily incognitive and interpersonal development, inaddition to self-regulation,” Cammarano said.

High-school students can sometimes benefit inthese ways as well, but the growth is typicallyrelated to addressing more global concerns.

“High-school students are often fascinated tolearn that there is a heritage of ideas they can

access and mine forframeworks to understandtheir own experiences.”

The benefits, she feels,could be quite wideranging, from stress andanxiety reduction tolearning to tolerate negativeexperiences like grief,conflict and sadness.

While there areoccasional challenges inorganization andcommunication, everyonein the Wicomico Countyschool system has, inCammarano’s experience,been extremely willing tocollaborate.

“What challenges thereare, are veryunderstandable from ateacher’s perspective,” she said. “There has beensuch an emphasis on teacher compliance andstandardization that it can be hard to open upyour classroom to something new.”

Cammarano can relate, having been a high-school teacher in Milan, Italy, for five years, wherephilosophy is a part of the high schoolcurriculum. Her fascination with different modelsof philosophical pedagogy for children and youngadults lead her to Montclair State and eventuallyColumbia University’s Teacher’s College, whereshe completed her doctorate.

Having studied philosophy in undergraduateschool, Cammarano was always familiar with theimportance of the discipline, but it was not untilshe encountered Ann Sharpe that she realized“philosophy is not merely about a history of ideasor logical thinking, although those are veryimportant.”

Sharp “taught me that in order to dophilosophy well you must also develop what shecalls ‘creative’ and ‘caring’ skills,” and thateducation should facilitate creative and moral

development alongside the development of theintellect,” Cammarano said.

It may seem like the benefits to local highschool students and second graders would justifythe effort involved. But there is another group ofstudents listening: the SU students who work inthe classroom as volunteer philosophy teachers.

“This is a great moment where our [SU]students finally ‘get’ what philosophy is about, whywe do what we do and what the direct benefits ofthe discipline can be to real people,” Cammaranosaid.

If the benefit of practicing philosophy islearning to listen – to take seriously the views ofothers, clarify your thoughts and to practicehealthy disagreement – then getting SU studentsto teach philosophy may just be an ideal way forthem to learn.

New Public Humanities Program CelebratesInternational Heritage By Dr. Céline Carayon

The History Department, with thegenerous support of Dean MaartenPereboom, is happy to announce a new

interdisciplinary initiative developed by Dr. KaraFrench and me.

The Fulton Public Humanities Program(FPHP) is designed to celebrate and promotepublic awareness of the history of marginalizedand under-studied groups, moments and cultures.Building on existing celebrations ofheritage/history months on campus (Native

American Heritage Month, Women’s HistoryMonth, African American Month, etc.), the FPHPbridges these initiatives (without preventingparallel programs across campus) in order tocreate a comprehensive year-round calendar ofacademic programming, promoting the values ofscholarly excellence, community outreach, andeducation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The FPUP Committee, comprised of membersof the History Department and faculty fromacross the Fulton School, and with the help of a

graduate assistant from the History Master of ArtsProgram, plan, organize, fund and managekeynote lectures, faculty development and studentresearch projects and other academically-valuablecultural events (movies, exhibits, etc.) related to thefields of historical memory and the public historyof minorities and neglected world cultures.

SPJ Makes a Name for ItselfBy Shannon Wiley

Salisbury University’s Society ofProfessional Journalists (SPJ0 executiveboard and members of The Flyer’s editorial

staff traveled to Orlando, FL, on September 16to participate in SPJ’s National Excellence inJournalism conference.

The main conference was held at the MarriottWorld Center in Orlando.

At the event, students and their advisor, Dr. Jennifer Cox, had opportunities to attendworkshops and lectures that ranged in topics fromcovering suicide, to “how not to get a jobfreelancing,” to using virtual reality to give thenews.

Speakers at these workshops came from allacross the country with various levels ofexperience and education but all with deep andunique insight.

While members of the group were not in

sessions, they had breaks to meet with employersoffering jobs and internships, to talk withrepresentatives from journalism graduate schools,and to learn about new resources andtechnologies that could help them in the field.

Booths present included Cable News Network,the Boston Globe, National Public Radio,Entertainment and Sports Programming Networkand Gannett Company.

From networking at the expo, two seniors, SPJsecretary Chris Krauss and The Flyer Editor-In-Chief Jacob Troxell, received job offers for aftergraduating in the fall.

“The conference not only helped me become abetter journalist, but it gave me that greatopportunity to network,” Troxell said. “Mr. Case,who offered me the job said he did so because ofmy passion. If I submitted a resume online to hiswebsite, he wouldn't have been able to see my

passion for journalism.”Although the majority of the conference

was focused on journalists, some SU SPJexecutive board members more focused ona public relations future gained contactsand new knowledge, as well, fromrepresentatives from companies looking forPR specialists with experience injournalism.

SU’s SPJ members spent their timenetworking and enjoying their trip atDisney’s Food and Wine Festival Preview,B.B. King’s Blues Club, and Disney World,as all attendees were given complimentarypasses with their participation at theconference.

Each member of SU’s group left theconference satisfied and looking forward towhat lies ahead of each of them in theirprofessional endeavors.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity

that SPJ had to attend this year’s conference inOrlando, FL,” SU SPJ President Brooke Reesesaid. “We were able to learn a lot about the careerpaths we hope to follow upon graduation, and wealso learned a lot about each other as an executiveboard.

“After this conference, I am truly excited to seewhat we can accomplish within this next year tomake SPJ known and to help students becomebetter journalists.”
