after three years of ministry at First Church. Jon will re-ceive an appointment to another church. We wish him well. These changes may result in other changes to our minis-try. We may return to two worship ser-vices. There will be changes in the way we operate our youth program. We will use more part time, and less full time help on staff. In all, our ef-forts continue to be to provide the most effective ministry possible with the re-sources we have at hand. God is good, and surely will guide us through these changes.
Dillon Staas Senior Pastor
Someone once ob-served that the only thing that never changes is the fact that things always change. There are some changes com-ing at First Church in 2010 that we want to tell you about. Susan Mathew, our Christian Education director and technol-ogy facilitator has been employed at First Church in one capacity or another for 40 years. Her ser-vice has been highly dedicated and ex-tremely effective. Susan is ready to join her husband David in retirement during 2010… almost. David has retired from public school teaching but is now working as principal
at St. Mary’s elemen-tary. Like Dave, Susan will not move suddenly and com-pletely into retire-ment. She will re-main with First Church on a part time basis from January through June to train her replacement. The Christian Educa-tion position will be a part time position and is currently open. The tasks of newslet-ter editor and televi-sion coordinator are currently in limbo. As announced in No-vember, Pastor Jon Exman will also be leaving us in June. The current financial recession has re-sulted in the elimina-tion of the associate pastor position. We will say goodbye to Jon, Lesa, and family
Change is Coming
Stewardship Update
Our stewardship drive for the 2010 church budget is winding down and we want to thank you for your sup-port of the ministry of First Church. To date we have received 130 pledges totaling $291,420.
This compares to 155 pledges last year totaling $339,732. We know there are some who are concerned with the effect of the troubled economy on their personal income and are reluctant to make a pledge they might not be able to keep. Please, whether you have pledged or not, continue to give as generously and regularly as you are able during 2010.
We continue to accept pledges through January. In response to the shortfall in income, the church is spending far less than has been budgeted for 2009, and is making further cuts in next year’s budget. We are confident the steps we are taking will keep First Church on sound fi-nancial footing into the future. Once again, thank you for your support.

Observe! Keep your eyes open! That’s the sleuth’s advice for the New Year. For instance, have you observed the covers of the church bul-letins? “During the ordinary times of the church calendar we have a sketch of our building, but during the spe-cial seasons, I wanted to communicate a message,” Reverend Staas indicated. “When I learned how creative Diane is, I solicited her help. She has the ability to ‘just make it happen’!”
Diane Thompson was in Juarez, Mexico with the church mission team when she felt a calling to join the Contemporary Worship Praise Band. It was through her music that Dillon discovered her creativity, and he seized the opportunity to expand the church’s ministry with her art. “He explains to me the vision in his head,” Diane began. “I try to really feel the message, and then I sketch it out in lead. From there I do some shading with
chalk, and take it to Dillon for review. We build the drawings around seasonal themes and selected scrip-tures.” A favorite men-tioned by both Diane and Reverend Staas was used during the 2008 Lenten season. It portrays Christ’s praying hands with a shadow of the Cross flow-ing across them. The sleuth was inspired by the recent Advent portrayal in which three people anx-iously await the arrival of Jesus as from a distance they watch Mary & Joseph traveling toward Bethle-hem. Diane has done over twenty bulletin covers, usu-ally four per year. All are available in the church of-fice, and you are encour-aged to stop by to give them a second look.
Diane’s art goes beyond the band and the bulletin. Be a sleuth yourself, and take note of First Church’s Peony Parade floats. Each year the float displays the theme
of the up-coming Vacation Bible School. With lots of help from the Bible school staff (and their husbands) Diane aids in the design and building of the float. “We usually move her de-sign directly from the wagon to the altar where it serves as the backdrop for the week of VBS,” ex-plained Susan Mathew. And while you are sleuth-ing around, you will learn that the First United Meth-odist program, Sacred Space, is often built around an actual space. It is Diane Thompson, along with Jana Thompson, who designs those ‘spaces.’ “She brings all those won-derful impressions to cre-ate an inviting place to be,” enthused Jana.
“I like to be a helper, a support person,” Diane mused. As we enter this New Year, let us be grate-ful for all the artistic contri-butions of our talented congregation.
From the July 5th, 1961 FV.---A well informed congregation, we feel is more active and interested in the total program of the church. We pledge to you our efforts to bring to you through this publication all the information and news we are able to obtain in our church office that will enable you to become a more active participant in our church wor-ship services, church school, youth and adult groups.
In order to make this a more effective "messenger" we also ask that every person con-sider himself a "reporter" and keep us informed as to business meetings, social and rec-reational activities and other matters of general Interest to readers of this paper.--------
Mrs. Forrest Gribler was the soloist for the worship service Sunday morning. Her selec-tion was , "Today I walked where Jesus walked.”

closer relationship with their Savior.
Before we get into the calendar I wanted to talk about something. In the last few weeks we have had some news that is hard to deal with. Be-cause of the financial situation of the church, there will no longer be an associate pastor here at First UMC. This means that the Exman family will be moving and appointed to an-other church in July. News like this is always
hard to take, it seems as if we just got here, but that is just the way things go sometimes. I ask that you pray for my family as we go through this transition and know that we will be praying for you. Things will work out because God is always with us. I just wanted you to know that while I am finishing up my last six months at First UMC; your teenagers will still have plenty of ministry opportunities. I am excited for the

On the SECOND Sun-day of January, parents and children will meet in the dining room of the church for a com-bined session beginning at 9:30 a.m. Families (that’s mom and dad, too) with children of preschoolers through junior high are invited to come and experience a high energy fast paced introduction to “The Uptown District” rotation lesson and
verse for the month. It is called “Bible Song.” The remaining 3 Sun-days will have the pre-school children in their classes, elementary children in rotation, the youth and parents in their respective classes. In this is a very exciting tool called “The Faith 5”. If you care to have some fun, keep your family communicating every night, and grow
in your understanding of yourself and God, we urge you to try this simple five-step process see if it doesn’t help!
Please prayerfully consider joining us
