Helpful HintsWork at your own level

Plan your own courses; do not adopt your

friend’s courses

Balance your life

Discover and develop your strengths and

interests

Commit to what you are interested in (Scouts,

Club Sports, Music Lessons, Mock Trial, Debate)

Go beyond the minimum: commit to 3-4 years

of same class/club/etc.

Give back: volunteer opportunities

MythsFreshman year doesn’t matter because

the UC’s only look at grades from sophomore and junior years

Freshman year establishes study habits

Freshman year determines classes for 10th grade

Colleges review the entire transcript

Remember: Earning a “D” is enough to graduate, but colleges require you to earn at least a “C”

A college’s ranking is more important than finding the right fit for you

How rankings work

Rankings don’t matter if the college is not a good fit for you
