Welcome everybody to our 5th Annual Championship Show. It is a privilege to welcome our judge Arnold Hendriks from France, back to Australia to judge our show. It’s warming to see such a large entry for you to judge. I’d like to thank our committee in all their hard work in putting on this spectacular day. It has taken many months in the making. Also, a massive thank you to all our sponsors for our show. French Bulldogs – Judge – Mr Arnold Hendriks (FRANCE)

Judging Commences 30 minutes after conclusion of the Open Show, not

before 11am Dogs, followed by Bitches / General Specials and then Property Classes.

INTRODUCING OUR JUDGE – Mr Arnold Hendriks (France)

My name is Arnold Hendriks (prefix vd Zuylenstede French Bulldogs since 1968). It is a great honour to be invited by the French Bulldog Club of Queensland to judge the Championship show and be back for the 3rd time in your beautiful country! As I started breeding French Bulldogs in 1968 the breed in the Netherlands, at that time, had health problems (bleeding disease) which is hereditary. My plan was to imported new blood from England to start a new generation for the Netherlands. In the seventies I imported Topsham Mc Tavish. He was from the Bomblitz line (Vivienne Watkins) and a female Quatt Pollyana (Joan and Ann Cottrell) They were the foundation of the vd Zuylenstede kennel. Breeding not more than once or twice a litter a year and always from an average of plus minus 6 Frenchies base. Important for me was to place the pups to serious owners. From this small base I bred many National and International Champions, including a World Champion. In 1978 I was invited to judge the Championship Clubshow from the Middle and Northern French Bulldog Club in England. Also later I judged the Championship Clubshow from the French Bulldog Club of England. One I was very proud of is the 100 year Jubilee Show of the French Bulldog Club of France in 1999 in Paris. The country of the foundation of the breed! Two times the Nationale d’Elevage in France. The first time I judged in Australia was in 1999 and in 2004 I was invited to judge the CH Clubshow from NSW. I have also judged Championship Clubshows in Norway, Sweden, Portugal and the first Ch Clubshow from Poland in 2015 (and many more French Bulldog Specialty Shows). One of the most beautiful shows was the Specialty of the French Bulldog club of America in Santa Barbara California USA 2015. In May this year I judged the French Bulldogs and group 9 in Poland and judged Best in Show. The 24st of June 2017 the National d’Elevage in France. (Champion Clubshow) With 342 entries, 5 judges, a very nice and great show. Now today, at the French Bulldog Club of Queensland, I am wising the exhibiters a successful and sportive day and I would like to thank the committee and organisation for my invitation. BOAS Testing Chamber

BOAS is the term used to describe the effect the shortened head on brachycephalic breeds (like french bulldogs, pugs and british bulldogs) has on airways. BOAS can cause these breeds to suffer from severe breathing problems to the point where they can collapse due to lack of air. It also makes the dogs that suffer from it very susceptible to overheating as well as other lingering health issues. Until now to diagnose BOAS usually requires a physical examination, history and lesion assessment under sedation or a general anaesthesia. These methods are all either invasive or subjective, which can create problems when evaluating progression and further treatment. The use of a Whole-Body Barometric Plethysmography Chamber removes these issues. HELP US TO BRING THIS GROUND BREAKING SCIENTIFICALLY BASED NON-INVASIVE TESTING FOR BOAS TO AUSTRALIA. What is so important about this chamber is that for the first time, brachycephalic breeds can be sorted into groups of unaffected, mildly affected and severely affected. Dogs can now be tested without handling or put under additional stress so that any variable factors are minimalised. What this in turn means is that breeders can then make far more informed decisions on breeding sensibly away from affected individuals. Initially, we are aiming for a chamber to be set up at Sydney Unversity and then try and get one set up in each major veterinary school across Australia. The French Bulldog Club of NSW will donated $5,000 towards funding and we call on individuals and breed clubs to invest in this most important venture. Dogs NSW have already indicated support.
