Butterflies and Blessings
Congratulations! You have paused long enough during your busy day to read our wonderful newsletter. Many
of us live such busy lives that we often move too fast to observe the simple and beautiful blessings that
surround us every day. During our staff meeting this week, Kim Joiner encouraged us to take time to walk
around our beautiful church grounds and notice the caterpillars that are in the process of becoming
butterflies. Then as our meeting continued, I looked out the parlor window toward our beautiful cross in the
courtyard and I noticed multiple butterflies dancing through the gorgeous crepe myrtle on the other side of
the window. I wonder if I would have noticed them if Kim hadn’t mentioned it earlier in the meeting. How
often in life do butterflies float around me but I am too busy to notice their beauty?
I am also guilty of being in a hurry during my quiet time. I admit there are days when I am just going through
the motions and not getting much out of my time but then there are other days when the devotion seems so
timely that I can feel God’s message and direction clearly. I used to think I simply connect with some
devotions more than others but I now believe there is more to it. I believe it is me and not the devotion. It is
my frame of mind that sometimes gets in the way as I approach this time with God.
In the book “Five Practices of a Fruitful Congregation,” Richard Schnase shares some thoughts about
corporate worship that I believe can also be applied to our private worship time. He says, “We don’t attend
worship to squeeze God into our lives; we seek to meld our lives into God’s. It’s a time to think less about
ourselves and more about faith, less about our personal agendas and more about God’s will.” Am I trying to
squeeze God into my life or am I seeking to meld my life into God’s? Am I letting my personal agenda clutter
my mind or am I focusing on God?
My prayer for myself and each of you is for God to grant us the ability to slow down and open our eyes to the
beauty around us and to be present wherever we are. When we are at work, be present with our coworkers.
When we are at home, try to leave work behind and be present with our family. When we are spending time
with God, be fully present and ask God to open our hearts and minds to what He wants us to learn so we can
meld our lives into God’s.
When we open our hearts and minds, God may create a desire to get involved in a new ministry. If you were
at the Ministry Fair, you know God is at work in many ways through
First Presbyterian Church. How are you being called to respond to
God’s grace today? Is it through worship, study, service or all three?
God is certainly at work each and every day through the multitude
of ministries but also through the people (family, co-workers, friends
and strangers) that we encounter. The question is will we pause
long enough to experience those God moments? I pray each of us
can take time to pause and thank God for the beautiful butterflies
and blessings that surround us each day.

Responding to God’s grace through worship, study and service.
In one of the outbursts of praise and faith and trust in God that are scattered
throughout his letters, Paul wrote in his Epistle to the Romans, “For I am
convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things
present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything
else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ
Jesus our Lord.”
It is an astounding acknowledgement of the power of God’s Spirit to overcome anything that might undo us,
another way of affirming Jesus’ teaching to his disciples that with God, all things are possible.
We are experiencing the power of these promises in our midst as we embark on “All Things Possible,” a
capital campaign that we believe God is blessing in order to establish a future of vitality for our congregation,
free of debt, mission-centered, enabling us to fulfill our mission statement – “Responding to God’s grace
through worship, study and service.”
Our campaign is now moving to a new phase. This week you will receive an “All Things Possible” vision
brochure. Please take time to read it, prayerfully considering how God may work through you to fulfill this
vision among us. We hope the brochure will answer some basic questions about the campaign, providing a
brief overview.
Over the next few weeks after you receive the brochure, be looking for a call from a member of our campaign
Prayer Team. The purpose of their call is to invite you to a time of prayer, hear your prayer needs, and
answer any questions you may have about the campaign after having read the brochure.
We have already been overwhelmed by the generosity and enthusiasm happening here as together we ask,
“Lord, what do you want to do through me?” New friendships are forming, new opportunities for mission
and ministry are being realized, and the winds of the Spirit and the newness the Spirit brings are blowing
through God’s people at First Presbyterian. It is the same Spirit of Christ of which Paul spoke, and which he
experienced, a Spirit that will keep us tethered to the love of God as we step into God’s future together.
Peace, Pastor Chris

Calling All Senior Adults
Do you engage in
volunteer work either
here at the church or in
another location? The

We are committed as a church to God’s transforming mission in the world. Below are
notes we have recently received from our mission partners.
Monroe Harding
Thank you! Your recent donation of $500 means that you understand how
important a safe, loving home is for children who have been traumatized and
neglected.
The Habitat for Humanity Williamson -Maury team would like to offer a heartfelt
thank you for your generosity! We truly appreciate your sponsorship of
$1,750.00 received June 24, 2015.
Society of St. Andrew
Thank you for your support of our ministry. It was an honor that you invited
Charlie to speak at your worship services and a blessing to receive your recent gift
of $250.00. Because we rescue and distribute food at an average cost of two cents
per serving, your gift translates to 12,500 servings of healthy, nourishing fruits and
vegetables on the tables of our hungry brothers and sisters across Tennessee.
Martha O’Bryan Center
Thank you for your generous gift of $1,000 to Martha O’Bryan Center. This year,
we celebrate our 120th anniversary of serving the people of Nashville, and we are
immensely grateful for your support.
GraceWorks
Thank you for your kind donation. Your caring support of struggling families
in Williamson County will make a great difference in the lives of thousands of
people. Your gift is already being used to pay utility bills to keep families
warm, the lights on and the water running in hundreds of homes. Thank you!
Pastoral Counseling Center of Tennessee, Inc.
We are so grateful for First Presbyterian Church’s contribution of $700 which
has been credited to the Franklin Fund. At the Pastoral Counseling Centers of
Tennessee we seek to be an extension of your congregation’s ministry. We are committed
to providing services to anyone who seeks counseling. This means that we serve a diverse
population, and while many of our clients can afford our regular fee, we see several
clients who cannot. We rely upon generous donations from individuals, congregations,
and foundations in order to provide the financial assistance for these clients.

Wednesday Night Live Adult Programming 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.
September 2 – Blake Lectures, featuring Dr. Paul Dehart
Dr. DeHart is Professor of Theology and Chair of the Graduate Department of Religion at Vanderbilt
University Divinity School. He will join us and speak on the life and thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian who was imprisoned by the Nazis and hanged only
hours before the prison camp was liberated. Dr. DeHart will explore the events of Bonhoeffer’s life and
talk about one of his most influential books, The Cost of Discipleship.
Sept. 9, 16, 23, and 30 – So You Say You’re a Christian. Already? – Pastor Chris
Using four stories from the Gospel of John, Pastor Chris will guide a study of the marks of a disciple of
Jesus Christ. Using the quote from Maya Angelou for the title of the study, we will ask whether or not the
Christian is always “on the way” toward true Christianity, and the specific forms discipleship take as we
walk together. We will specifically look at the stories from John’s Gospel of Jesus and Nicodemus, the
Samaritan Woman at the Well, the Woman Caught in Adultery, and the Man Born Blind. The four marks
of the disciple we will examine are Worship, Study, Service, and Generosity.
October 7, 14, 21, 28 – Offering Hospitality to our Neighbors
Each week of October we will have as our guest Bible study leader a local pastor from a different
congregation. Oct. 7: Dr. Kenneth Hill and members of Historic Shorter Chapel AME; Oct. 14: Elder Paduil
& Peter Riek (our Sexton) of Sudanese American Nuer; Oct. 21: Rev. Wayne McCollough and members of
Limestone Baptist and Oct. 28: Father Charles Strobel, founder of Room in the Inn. Our Inn will open
Nov. 4 and Father Strobel will help prepare us to offer hospitality to our weekly guests that are
homeless.
November 4, 11, and 18 – Abundant Life the Jesus Way – Pastor Chris
Pastor Chris will lead us in exploring three stories from John’s Gospel that speak to Jesus’ call “that they
might have life, and have it abundantly.” This is the central message of John’s Gospel: Jesus calls us not
to scarcity, but to recognition of the abundance of gifts we have been given and are called to offer. This
abundance affects every aspect of life and is a gift freely offered to all. We will look at the Prologue to
John’s Gospel, the story of the Raising of Lazarus, and Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Christ
in the garden.
December 2, 9, and 16 – Lena Reynolds School of Mission
We will hear speakers who help lead various mission efforts in our community and be given the chance
to connect with the growing mission program of our congregation. More details will be coming as the
speakers are known.

Senior Adult Ministries: Quarterly Lunch & Learn
On October 10 we will host LaTonya Turner, the producer of Caregiving a NPT Report in the Aging Matters
series. She will show portions of the show and lead our discussion. Sign up on the Wilson Hall bulletin
board to let us know you will attend and what potluck dish you will bring. The potluck lunch will be at 11:00
in Wilson Hall and program to follow.
More on the Caregiving Report:
At least 70% of people over 65 will need long-term care services and support, according to
the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services. But fewer than 10% of Americans are saving
and planning specifically for long-term care, resulting in almost 44 million adults in the U.S.
that provide unpaid care to someone over age 50. Seven out of 10 are women. Despite being
married, having children, and having careers, they are putting in about 20 hours a week of
elder-care. In Caregiving, the latest installment of NPT Reports: Aging Matters series,
produced by LaTonya Turner hosted by Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Kathy Mattea,
Nashville Public Television (NPT) discusses the existence and impact of informal caregiving in
relation to the increase of life expectancy and aging of the Baby Boomers. This documentary
draws on the knowledge of caregivers, family members, adult daycare runners, healthcare
and social service professionals, and more to express the problems that families are
experiencing when they are unprepared to provide care for an elderly family member.

Youth
All 7th-12th grade students are welcome to join any and all youth programming from Sunday School,
Sunday Night Summit, and Wednesday Night Live to NaCoMe Retreats and summer mission trips. For
Sunday School this fall, 7th - 12th graders are following the lectionary based curriculum, Feasting on the
Word. At WNL, students will walk together through Mike Yaconelli’s Book, Devotion: A Raw Truth Journal
on Following Jesus. This study uncovers characteristics of Jesus’ disciples and challenges students to see
themselves as disciples as well. At Sunday Night Summit, middle and high school students will be
engaged in Spice Rack, a creative, scripture-based curriculum by Mark DeVries. And don’t forget that the
Fall NaCoMe Retreat is coming October 23-25! Mark your calendars because it is just around the corner.
I am personally excited to dive into each of these programs and watch how they contribute to the
greater vision of our youth ministry as a safe place for students to be themselves, to ask hard questions,
deal with hard feelings, and learn and grow together as Disciples of Christ. It is going to be a wonderful
year.
Thank you youth, parents, and FPC congregants for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of youth
ministry here. You have welcomed my husband Jared and me with unmatched hospitality, and I am
honored to be your new Director of Youth Ministries here at FPC Franklin.

I know the plans I have for you…
Greetings to All!
Before my recent vacation I received an invitation to play for worship for the congregation in Dallas in
which I served for over ten years. While in the building I recalled many, many happy moments, one of
which took place one morning shortly after my arrival into the building. As I peered over one of the half-
doors of a Parent’s Day Out classroom “Jack” came running over to greet me with open arms, hands up
lifted, and wearing a broad smile. Mind you, I was a perfect stranger to him, but it did not matter, I
received a warm greeting nonetheless. Do you remember what this type of pure excitement feels like?
Do we, as the church of Christ, also feel a similar type of excitement in our call to discipleship?
During our upcoming Capital Campaign we would do well to consider that God goes before, and in us, and
through us to do his good will here among his people. We are encouraged in our work through the words
the prophet Jeremiah spoke in order to encourage the exiles in Babylon,
I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not calamity,
to give you a future and a hope.
The One Year Book of Hymns echoes the prophet in a similar way:
God leads us a day at a time; a step at a time. No need to worry about distant events.
The Welsh hymn writer William Williams compared the Christian journey to that of the
Israelites in that, we may not know the route by which God is leading us, but we humbly
count on His guidance.
Surely God goes before us, both you and me (and my friend Jack), guiding us continually, satisfying our
needs in parched places, making our bones strong, making us like a watered garden, like springs of water
whose water never fail. (Isaiah 58:11)
Run, like Jack, into the future God has planned.
Rise up singing praise!
Michael
