Background:

• Computer Science is the study of theoretical foundations of computing and its implementation and application in computer systems [Wikipedia].

• It involves the study of:

– Science: Physics, Mathematics.– Programming: languages, algorithms.– Engineering: Electronics, Software Engineering.

Quick Facts:

• The percentage of students admitting to computer science and engineering programs has dropped 35% worldwide for year 2006.

• Computing and technology scientists are very limited due to the minor involvement of young scientists (As they are basically not qualified).

• Many problems facing communities due to lack of engineers and scientists connectedness to communities’ problems.

Problem Definition

• Computer Science education is not addressing the worldwide reliance over technology.

• Computer Science education is not addressing students’ interests.

• Computer Science education is not preparing contributing scientists and engineers.

Solutions

• Cross-departmental Program.»Partitioning the program.

• Expert-student professional activities.

• Civic Engagement Projects (instead of traditional assignment).

Conclusion

• With the minor adjustments proposed, we will be able to prepare young scientists and engineers:

–Specialized into their area of interest related to computing (Cross-departmental).

–Aware of scientific, research methodologies, and practical approaches (Expert-Student relationship).

–Sensitive to communities and very people’s problems (Civic-engagement projects).
