FROM THE RECTORY

Looking Forward to the SummerDear Friends,Are you planning your summer yet? Perhaps you’re thinking of staying at home because of the credit crunch? If you have children and would like to send them on an action holiday that’s not too expensive, consider the events organised by West Runton Holidays. They provide a range of holiday opportunities for young peo-ple from Karting to Windsurfing, Sailing to Skiing, Abseiling to Mountain Biking. They’re called “West Runton” because they started by running camps in a field there in North Norfolk. Since then they have branched out to different venues. They work in association with Scripture Union, so they are well organised, with attention to safety and child protection. An important part of the programme is the opportunity to learn more about the Christian faith, and how it can help can help us live our lives to the full. My sons Peter and Ian have both been on the Kart Camps, which take place for a week every August at Letton Hall, near Shipdham in Norfolk. Part of the fun is that they have to assemble the karts, in teams, before they can drive them. Having been for several years, Ian now goes as a junior leader, and as a qualified instructor for the mountain biking, which they do in Thetford Forest. The age range for Kart Camp is 13 - 15. But, if you are interested, there are plenty of other holidays for other ages.I would be happy to pass on more information about these opportunities, and, yes, they do have a website: westrunton.org.uk. Whatever the state of the pound and our suffering bank accounts, I hope and pray you will have a chance to rest and refresh yourself in body and spirit this summer, even if it’s no further afield than a bench in your own back garden.

Excellent Ofsted Inspection for Botesdale & Rickinghall Playgroup The Botesdale and Rickinghall Playgroup were recently inspected by Ofsted, and another excellent report has just been published, with many categories achieving an “outstanding” grading. Again it has highlighted what a great local facility we have for our young children, with comments such as, “children thrive and make excellent progress in this friendly village playgroup,” and “they plan an exciting range of activities each day, firmly based upon children’s changing interests and needs to ensure that all children enjoy a challenging and motivating learning experience.” The management committee are justifiably proud of this new assess-ment, the credit for which, lies solely with the dedicated and hard-working staff: adored by children and parents alike. The playgroup has been running from the Botesdale Village Hall since 1994 and caters for children from 2 - 5 yrs. Click on the crop symbol in your editing software. You may find fixed sizes to use. By moving the crop tool over your opened photograph, you can crop the image at exactly the size you have chosen. It is preferable to insert sizes yourself if your software enables free con-trol. First decide on the width and height you want printed e.g. 6x4, 7x5 etc. Enter these figures in the width and height columns that ap-pear in the toolbar near the top of your PC screen, including inch or cm. For printing purposes, type 300 in the box marked resolution. Finally, move the crop tool over your opened picture until the dotted lines show the area you want printed, right click and hit Crop. Your image is now correctly sized for perfect printing.

I often see pictures or adverts in magazines that have been stretched or distorted out of proportion because the picture has been resized incorrectly. The same problem often arises if you print your pictures at a size that is different from the size taken by your camera.Resizing a photograph, to print without distortion, is not difficult and makes images appear more polished and professional. The simplest method in-volves using the crop tool in your image editing software. Some free soft-ware only provides fixed crop sizes, but if you have Photoshop Elements or Photoshop, you have the advantage of being able to crop and size your pictures any way you wish.To get the best result when you resize images for printing, you should understand the concept of aspect ratio. If you resize images without be-ing aware of aspect ratio, then you may see distorted results. The aspect ratio is simply the measurement of an image’s width to height. Most digital cameras produce images with an aspect ratio of 4:3, but most common print sizes have a different aspect ratio e.g. a 6x4inch print has an aspect ratio of 3:2, a 10x8 print 5:4. To understand this another way, have you ever taken your digital images to a High Street printer, asked for 10x8 prints and found you have parts of the image cropped out, perhaps the top of someone’s head ? However, if you ask for a print of a 12x8, you gain an extra 2inches and your image will be printed in full as the aspect ratio will be virtually the same as from your camera. This is because professional print machines are set to auto-matically crop the picture to the correct size you have ordered, but keeping the aspect ratio to avoid stretching or distorting your picture. There is a trade off between keeping the aspect ratio and how much of the image is cropped off – and where it is cropped. To ensure your images are correctly printed, it is advisable to use the crop tool in your photo editing software to crop your prints to the right size and resolution before taking them to the printers, or before printing them at home.

Extraordinary PC MeetingThe Extraordinary Parish Council Meeting was held on Tuesday, 17th February 2009 at the pavilion. The meeting was chaired by Mr Stannard. Amongst the matters discussed were:Possible Waste Treatment Facilityon Shepherd’s Grove Industrial Estate The Chair read a draft document, detailing points to be raised with Suffolk CC, covering change of use, prospects for local employment, existing and future problems with Environment Agency controls, transport issues and infrastructure, the type of waste treatment installation, possible emis-sions, any future consultation process, and concerns about encouraging further waste facility applications.Comments were sought from the public and it was agreed to include further points emphasising the issues specific to the Shepherds Grove site, namely transport issues and infrastructure, existing problems with Environment Agency controls, prospects for local employment, and opening the gates for similar applications. Additional points raised at the meeting included using old technology in 25 years’ time, how Suffolk CC had consulted residents, wheth-er the type of usage would constitute a change of use (from light to heavy industrial), that proposal did not include the sorting of waste, a reduction in chance of additional employment opportunities, heavy traffic hauling in quicklime and removing ash, HGV vehicles using country roads when the A143 was closed and associated congestion, the A143 being unsuitable especially during sugar beet season, the dangers of quicklime, the height of a chimney, the use of Shepherds Grove for other waste disposal facilities.A letter will be sent to Suffolk County Council with additional comments before the consultation period expires.

Odours from County Mulch Simon Bailey, Monitoring and Enforce-ment Officer in the Waste and Minerals Development Team of Suffolk CC had written in connection with investigating odours emanating from the County Mulch facility.

21

HEPWORTH

He has asked to be notified when odours are a nuisance, and will aim to attend the site within 24 hours (contact details are telephone 01473 264754, fax 01473 216858, e-mail [email protected]).

Possible Planning Application for a shop at Church Farm, Church Lane The owner is planning to open the museum more often by appointment, and has sought the Parish Council’s views on converting the existing barn by the roadside into a retail shop for the village and for the sale of museum goods. The Parish Council supported the idea of a shop especially as it met the aims of the Parish Action Plan, and would not object to a sympathetic planning application. They did, however, have reservations about a shop in practical terms, having witnessed the demise of several shops in the village.Accounts for Payment Payment was agreed for the manufacture and delivery of interpretation panel.

Incinerator, Chimneys, MBT’S, C.A.W.S? What is all the Hot Air about? Are you puzzled by the recent erection of a sign at the road leading to Hepworth from the A143? Have you asked yourself what is going on here? We want to tell you:Our Group of local campaigners, COMMUNITIES AGAINST WASTE SITE, is made up of people from over 7 villages and from all walks of life from mothers, retired people, to family G/P’s and Doctors. Collectively known as C.A.W.S, we exist to protect our homes, health, local tranquil-lity & local road networks from the proposal to develop the empty fields surrounding Shepherds Grove Industrial Estate on the edge of Hepworth into a Major Residual Waste Treatment Plant. The most likely technology being promoted by Suffolk County Council is either an Incinerator with a 295 ft Chimney ( taller than the sugar beet factory chimney in Bury St. Edmunds) or a MBT, (Mechanical Biological Treatment), with a 65ft Chimney. We are a newly formed group and have only been in existance for less than 10 weeks and we are dedicated to the following goals:

To offer more ways for you and your community to have your voice heard about the proposal to site a possible 24hour, 7days a week Incinerator to burn waste from all over the East of the UK and LONDON!• To ensure that should the Shepherds Grove Estate Develop, the devel-opment should only be into either mixed Office Units or non 24/7 Light Industrial Units, which would optimise the Employment Opportunities for our Families. • We want to protect the area near Hepworth, Thelnetham, Hinderclay, Wattisfield, Walsham Le Willows and Stanton from becoming the dustbin of Suffolk, the surrounding counties, or indeed ,London. These are the areas from which we will have rubbish travelling, in heavy, 40 Tonne HGV’s using all roads leading to the site, should the proposals be allowed to go ahead unchallenged. Our group started with one neighbour telling another neighbour about the proposals, after they had found out by sheer accident that there was a; “Public consultation by Suffolk County Council going on and that Shepherd’s Grove was on a shortlist of 5 sites (out of 90) being considered for 3 or 4 sites to house incinerators to deal with waste that cannot be recycled” It was shocking news and this news continues to shock whenever some-one new finds out about it.If you or your neighbours have had any doubts about the campaign and the proposals we are fighting against on behalf of you and your fam-ily- We urge you to research the evidence, including the footprint plans with detailed scales of an INCINERATOR and MBT located at the top of Summer Road. This plan was commissioned by Suffolk County Council. A copy is available to view on our website.Houses in Hepworth, Walsham, Wattisfield, Stanton and surrounding areas could be rendered worthless if our corner of rural Suffolk if in-dustrialised in this un-environmentally sound way. Not to mention the related health risks to us all.

HEPWORTH

Join us and tell your neighbours. We only have a few months to send the message to our County Council that we do not want our area synonymous with heavy industry, pollution and a dumping ground for London’s waste. Our County Council will have made their mind up by the Summer -- make sure they know how you feel about it now.We all need to stand together and fight this now before the pro-posals get any further -- if we leave it to the planning stage, it will be too late and we will all have to live with the possibility of a 295 ft. chimney towering over our villages, pumping toxins into our precious country air.If you value your countryside and your healthy, peaceful way of life, join our C.A.W.S. We need you now, please join us.You can email us :[email protected]. Or register and sign our petition, on our website: www. suffolkcaws.org.ukOr come and talk to us in person at the Duke of Marlborough Pub every Tuesday at 7.30pm. Petitions are also available to sign at Hillcrest Nurseries, The Duke of Marlborough Pub and Rolfes of Walsham.

Hepworth & District WIOur March meeting was full of fishy tales as Andy Malcolm told us about the work of the Fisherman’s Mission. Founded at the end of the 19th Century the Mission still has a job to do today with commercial fishing the most dangerous job in the country. The Mission helps both injured fishermen and the bereaved families of lost fishermen for as long as support is needed, which is often for decades. Enlivened with sea songs and poems, his talk was still a serious reminder of the true cost of fish. The April meeting is on 9th April at Hepworth Village Hall at 7.30pm when we will be learning about Tai Chi with Michael Brown.Visitors are always welcome and anyone interested in further informa-tion or transport from Barningham please contact me, Brenda Last on 221307.

HEPWORTH

Shrove TuesdayThis was well and truly celebrated at the Pancake Party held at the Old School. Alwyn and Mike’s house was really welcoming and all the differ-ent varieties of pancakes were amazing. Alwyn and Clare slaved over a hot stove and Mike over the mulled wine, so we were all prepared for the beginning of Lent. Any volunteers for a pancake race next year?Coins in a JarHere’s one more reminder that the Coins-in-a-Jar scheme re-launch-es at Easter. There’ll be lots of empty jars ready for everyone who would like to save their small change in aid of Hepworth Church. Jars can be collected from the church on Easter Sunday, or from Marjorie Macpherson or Chris Anderson.EasterPalm crosses will be given out at the 9.30am service on April 5th (Palm Sunday). On Maundy Thursday (9th April) at 8.00pm there will be a Communion service in Hepworth Church, commemorating Christ’s supper in the upper room with his disciples. On Easter Sunday (April 12th) at the 9.30am service we look forward to welcoming the Revd John Taplin from Stanton.

Out of the mist came a leaderOut of the African sun,To bring hope to all the people.--A new era had begun.

Out of the mist came ObamaHis mission ever so clear; To rid the world of tyrannyFor the things that we hold dear.

The recipe is from a little book written in 1955, with recipes collected from the “Farmers Weekly” (so, not metric).

May Blossom Wine1 gallon of water1 orange1 lemon2 pints May (hawthorn) blossom3 and a half lbs sugar1/2 an oz. bakers yeast, (Sainsbury’s bakery still do it).

Start to bring the gallon of water to the boil, adding the thinly peeled rinds of lemon and orange.Add sugar and stir. Bring to boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Put measured blossoms into large bowl. Pour hot syrup and rinds over blossoms and stir. Allow to cool to lukewarm. Crumble yeast into a bottle containing 1 cupful of the lukewarm liquid (must). Shake to dissolve. Put plug of cotton wool in bottleneck and leave in warm place. Squeeze out orange and lemon juice. Add yeast and lemon and orange juice when must is lukewarm. Stir with wooden spoon. Cover with clean cloth and leave in warm place for 3 days, stirring once daily. After three days strain through muslin into gallon fermentation jar. Do not fill to brim. Keep in warm place 65 – 75 degrees F. Plug neck with cotton wool for day or so. Wipe neck clean and renew cotton wool if frothing. When frothing subsides, remove plug. Wipe neck clean and insert airlock filling bend in neck with water or glycerine. When fermentation has ceased, remove to cooler place for a few weeks, then siphon off into jar or bottles. Cork and label. If made in May-June, it will be bottled and matured by Dec-Jan.I suggest you get a little book on winemaking to help you through the process.

Village NewsSadly, we start with the deaths of two Hinderclay residents. Mr. Don Reed and Mr. Jeremy Bayman. Out thoughts and prayers are for their families and relatives at this time.

Gift DayOur Gift Day was a great success thanks to the very generous people of our village (and one or two from beyond!). The total at the time of going to press was £528 with a further £76.25 to be claimed in Gift Aid from the Inland Revenue, so the grand total is £604.25. Thank you so much to all of you!

Mothering SundayMothering Sunday is on the 22nd March and it won’t be long before Easter and we hope to welcome many of you in church for these serv-ices. The church always looks so magnificent with all the spring flow-ers at this special time of the year.

APCM The Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place on the 23rd April at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Refreshments will be served and there will be photographic displays of the church’s work. There’s a chance to hear about plans for the coming year, and to have your say about the care of our church. Any resident of the village is welcome, and any member of the Church Electoral Roll is entitled to vote in the election of the Church Council. Comings and GoingsWe know of one or two new people who have moved into the village and we wish them a long and happy stay with us.Mrs. Mary More has left the village but we hope to see her often. She has organised the Sponsored Cycle Ride for many years so we would like to record our thanks for all her hard work over the years and wish her well in her new home.

Amongst the matters discussed were:Report from the Borough Councillor The report covered the post-ponement of the Boundary Committee’s recommendation on the Local Government Review which has been deferred to 15th July (and which means that some of previously rejected proposals may now be under consideration), the forthcoming Countryside Forum (1st April), a change to SEBC policy for awarding grants, and help and advice offered by SEBC in connection with the some Rural Action Plan items, namely IT training, a coffee caravan for community coffee mornings, welcome pack for new residents, and village history or heritage days.Report from the Police Community Support Officer There have been no reported crimes in 2009. The public should continue to be on their guard regarding oil thefts which are ongoing in rural areas. Useful tips on crime reduction may be found on the Suffolk Police website.Accounts for Payment It was agreed to pay the clerk’s salary and ex-penses, a proportion of the clerk’s training in the Freedom of Information Act Publication Scheme and Certificate in Local Council Administration, and for the hire of the village hall.Water Level Management Plan The clerk had received a message from Atkins which, in summary, recommended to Natural England to do the minimum as the existing monitoring points on the Fen indicated that the water level target is hit for 85% of the time. It would therefore be inappropriate to spend public money to change water levels for just 15% of the time. After some discussion with the public, it was agreed that the clerk would draft letters to a number of statutory bodies expressing the village’s continuing concerns about the possible flooding of properties, the amount of water running off Shepherds Grove Industrial Estate, and requesting that a) the river be dredged, b) a sluice be installed to regu-late seasonal water levels, and c) the ditches be dug out. Nominated members of the Parish Council would review the draft letters before they were issued.

Russell PleasanceThe funeral of Mr Russell Pleasance took place at St Margaret’s Church Wattisfield on March 6th. He was 67. The service included the hymns ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’ and ‘We Plough the Fields & Scatter’, and a Tribute was given by Mr Bart Keaney.Russell attended Wattisfield School, and later studied at Chadacre Col-lege. He then went into building work with Bakers of Thurston. He and Barbara were married in 1969, and they built their bungalow together, which they have lived in ever since. He especially enjoyed collecting the old tools and implements which were used in farming. He had inherited his father’s Field Marshall tractor, which no doubt stimulated his interest in everything to do with the old farming ways. He provided a display for last year’s Harvest Festival, and before that, he was heavily involved with the open weekend last July at Bart Keaney’s museum in Hepworth, to which he had contributed many fascinating items. He had been ill for some time with cancer, and at the end his health de-teriorated quickly. It is a mercy that he didn’t have to suffer too long. Our sympathy is with Barbara, and with Russell’s brother Bernard, and with all the family in their sad loss.

PCC Annual MeetingAll parishioners are warmly invited to the Annual Meeting of the Parochial Church Council which this year will be held in Church at 7.30pm on Mon-day, 20 April. This is a good opportunity to hear about all that happened in 2008 and to learn about what is planned for the future. Members of the Electoral Roll will, as usual, receive a full copy of the Annual Report in advance but any other interested parishioners can receive a copy of the Report after the meeting on request. Do come along and show your support for the PCC – tea and coffee will be served after the meeting.

Link Romania Shoebox AppealWe have recently received a “Thank You” poster and letter from Link Romania with the tremendous news that 42,665 boxes were collected in 2008 – an increase of 90 boxes on the previous year. Shoeboxes were sent out in 7 trucks to Albania, Moldova and Romania and were distributed in many different locations. A team went out to see some of the boxes being given out in Romania and Moldova and you can read the account of their journey at www.linkromania.co.uk. The following is an extract from their letter which gives some idea of the impact our dona-tions can make:“Thank you so much for all you have done. Every time we give out shoe-boxes we are left speechless at the effect it has on the people that receive them. A couple of times we had to leave houses due to the emotions that welled up in us because of some of the conditions that people lived in. Illnesses are a way of life for many people with lack of sanitation and the inability to keep them and their children clean sometimes.Thank you for the shampoo, gels, deodorants, toothpaste, toothbrushes etc. Wide smiles form mothers who literally couldn’t stop grinning when they were given them. Thank you for the tape measures and small tools for the men, it was much appreciated. And for all those games, puzzles, books, pens, pencils and stationery that will help the children learn. Oh, and the hats, scarves and gloves – permanent pieces of clothing to make sure that people of all ages keep warm in the bitter conditions.Thank you, thank you, thank you – every box was sent with love and ac-cepted with wide arms and smiles.”

We would like to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all of you for your continued support. As we enter the next round of grant seeking – can we ask you to keep sending ‘good thoughts’ to the planners, it helps spur the form fillers on with their onerous task!

The 2009 Women’s World Day of Prayer was prepared by ‘Christian Women of Papua New Guinea’ and our local service, for Wattisfield, was hosted this year by Walsham-Le-WIllows. Working together through a special order of service programme enti-tled ‘In Christ there are many members yet one body’ we were told that the Independent State of Papua New Guinea (PNG) comprises more than 600 islands which are full of natural resources. Gender inequality is of great concern because women are given a low status in society, especially in rural villages. Christian denominations have realised that by working together, as a living example of unity, to spread the love of God, they will have a much greater influence on society. The service was beautifully put together with 10 members of the church taking the parts of the Readers to lead the congregation through the readings, poems and prayers. A small choir encouraged the assembled group through unfamiliar songs and the speaker used excellent visual aids to demonstrate how we are much stronger when we combine our abilities to work toward one common goal. A superb tea was provided in the Priory room - next year’s host will have a hard act to follow!
