The Foundation Stone (alsocalled the Corner Stone) waslaid only on 1 February 1911in a ceremony presided overby Maharaja of MysoreKrishnaraja Wadiyar, almostthree years after theconstruction of the MainBuilding began.
It was a grand event; theapproaches to the venuewere decorated and ahuge shamiana waserected beneath the cranethat was helping withon-going construction.
The day began with a receptionorganised by the Council for the
Maharaja. The ceremony oflaying the stone followed
introductory remarks by theDirector Morris Travers and
speeches by Dorabji Tata (son ofJN Tata) and CF Stevens, the
architect of the building.
After the ceremony, theMaharaja gave a long speech inwhich he recounted the historyof how the Institute was set upand also paid tribute to thefounder JN Tata.
The Travers had a post-dinner party late that night followingsoirées organised by the Hays and Norman Rudolph.
The celebration was notlimited to 1 February. Theeve of the FoundationStone laying ceremony –the night of 31 January1911 – also saw severalsocial gatherings tocelebrate the occasion.
Those assembled at the ceremony werethen treated to music performed by theBand of the 2nd Battalion Queen’s Own
Cameron Highlanders.
