Tim FRANK

im Frank has no desire to be invisible, and so he puts considerable effort intobeing transparent. The managing part-

ner at Triple Threat Communications is so fo-cused on being genuine and authentic that theidea of being invisible, even in response to alight-hearted question, is abhorrent.

“I wouldn’t want to be invisible, because Iwant to be a part of wherever I am at the mo-ment,” he says. “Invisible is not genuine, al-though I guess you could argue that it is trans-parent.”

The industry leader founded Triple ThreatCommunications in 2005,

Tim Frank believes the timehas come for agencies tofocus more on clients’ bestinterests instead of theirown.

“I don’t believe career highlights are meas-ured in percentages of growth or numbers ofemployees,” he says. “I believe they are meas-ured by the people you meet and the impactyou have on them.”

Creating a culture that is genuine andtransparent to everyone who comes in contactwith the agency is also a major challenge, butone he will never stop striving to meet.

As others experience Mr. Frank’s way ofdoing business, they begin to duplicate it intheir own organizations, which has been Mr.Frank’s ultimate goal. He hopes to not onlybring success to Triple Threat, but to also changethe expectations that clients industrywide havefor their agencies and vice versa. According toMr. Frank, most agencies have their own best in-terests at the forefront of what they do.

“The best people in the agencies move upwithin the organization and get further awayfrom working with clients and positively im-pacting the client’s business,” he says “In short, they wake up thinking about the agency, whiletheir clients wake up thinking about theirbrands. The current model is broken by thismajor disconnect.”

His unique and inspiring vision for how atruly effective agency partners with its clientsand the relentless energy he devotes to hisclients not only provides them with a differ-ent customer experience and results, but con-tinually inspires and motivates his colleaguesand employees. As a result, everyone involvedexperiences a true partnership. This is howMr. Frank and his un-agency plan to continue— business as un-usual, making the success ofits clients the ultimate measure of their ownsuccess. PV

Mending a Broken Model

tas a nontraditional agency that puts its clientsand their brands first.

As head of an agency unencumbered byrigid process and layers, Mr. Frank puts a pre-mium on relationships and flexibility, keepingthe agency’s focus on whatever is best for itsclients and their brands. He firmly believesthat if this is done well, then everything elsewill fall into place.

Over the past 12 years, Mr. Frank has beenable to forge highly effective working relation-ships between professional, consumer/patient,and payer communications teams at agenciesand clients. His vision and skills have pro-duced uniquely effective programs involvingall three stakeholder groups on brands such asAltace, Symbicort, and Crestor.

Possessing an uncanny sense of the dynam-ics working within the different groups in thisspace, he has been able to eliminate the turfbattles and resulting silos that clients andagencies often get stuck in.

According to colleagues, Mr. Frank has seta new standard of leadership in the industry. His style is not razzle-dazzle, but rather he em-bodies truth in advertising and acknowledgeslimits and what can realistically be offered toclients.

He created a different model, with a differ-ent kind of agency-client relationship that re-quires a deeper level of engagement. He callsit the un-agency approach and based thefirm’s self-promotion on that premise.

To achieve this deeper level of engage-ment, Triple Threat’s model is based onteam members serving as integrated mem-

bers of the client’s brand team. Clients re-port that Triple Threat team members know

their brands and challenges as well as they do.They live and breathe strategy and tactics withclients, day in and day out. This client/agencyrelationship is based on transparency, authen-ticity, openness, and a commitment to thebrand. Not surprisingly, clients say, this createsbetter outcomes because Triple Threat’s modelencourages all the agencies to work together, creating better results in terms of the thinkingand creativity that come from the collabora-tion.

Starting his own business was definitely acareer highlight, but Mr. Frank prefers to focuson the relationships that he has built along theway as the most rewarding part of what hedoes.
