PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Art and Music success

Once again, the annual showcase of student art works and HSC music pieces was held last week. What a success it was. Art works that challenged and mesmerised, and music pieces that engaged a captivated audience of parents, teachers and supporters was a wonderful highlight for the year. The HSC music performers showed the extent of the varied talent in this school. We had everything. Instruments ranging from piano, voice, clarinet, trombone, electric guitar and acoustic guitar provided a large audience with a variety of technically challenging, exquisite and sometimes confronting music. We had the full range from Sinatra, Mozart and Death Metal. HSC student performers (and their very willing accompanists) were clearly in their element; this was it – an opportunity to show others what their major works were all about. They entertained us and challenged us. And I was in Heaven. The Art Show was equally as wonderful. Students again used their pieces to challenge their audience, taking issues like gaming, depression, ageing, continuity, urbanisation, loneliness and beauty to highlight modern perspectives in a technological age filled with continual change. As well, student art from Year 7 -10 was on display reflecting the colourful, quirky and fun approach to creativity in this school. Teachers work very hard to manage the classroom process and to mount shows that allow audiences to enjoy student work. The art show takes four people a day (and night) to set up and another day to dismantle. It takes weeks of planning, negotiating, labouring. The work is just done. Can I thank the four art teachers – Ms Wendy Bergagnin, Mrs Maria Jones, Miss Alex Kenworthy and Mrs Simone Read – for their dedication and enormous efforts. Here they are below looking rightly proud and satisfied.

Can I also thank the music staff - Ms Sylvia Marson, Mr David Evans, Mr Nick Powning - who work very hard with HSC students practising and perfecting, right up until the last minute. Australian Mathematics Competition

Each year Castle Hill High School students are entered into the Australian Mathematics Competition and this year we received our best results. In Year 7, Marie Echevarria received a prize and Distinctions were awarded to Kaitlyn Eagleton, Mario Echevarria Angus Groth, Sarah Rosolen and Sho Sasaki. In Year 8, ten Distinctions were awarded to Sanjot Aujla, James Conte, Stephanie Conyngham, , Ryan Nicol, Liam Hawken, Marshall Hinding, Andre Leiva, Hillman Mai, Michael Symons and Yiheng Wang. In Year 9, four Distinctions were awarded to Mateo Carol Villavedra, Joshua Cramer, Scott Davis and Mitchell Perl. In Year 10, four Distinctions were awarded to Daniel Green, Cuan McLeman, Allen Qi and Guansen Wang. In Year 11 Jinkang Wang received a Distinction. This, together with 105 students who received credits in the competition, is a terrific achievement. I have no doubt that the Wednesday afternoon Maths Homework Club attended by about 50 students is having an impact on results. Congratulations to our Maths teachers who work very hard at achieving the best for students. 50th Anniversary Celebrations continue This Saturday September 7, 200 guests will celebrate the 50 th anniversary of Castle Hill High School at a dinner to be held at Castle Hill RSL. Guests from the 60s, in fact some of our original students, will be there in force as will other ex-students , ex-teachers, current teachers, recently graduated students, past principals and executive. It should be a night of reminiscence, one where stories of old will be told and fun will be had. ADFA success

On Wednesday 4 September, three representatives from the Australia Defence Force Academy (ADFA) attended our Year 11 and 12 Celebration Assembly to award Jacqueline Rhodes with a prestigious Education Award. A laptop computer was presented to Jacqui and a very handsome framed certificate for the school archives was awarded to the school in recognition of its assistance to Jacqui’s leadership experiences. Jacqui is an outstanding candidate for the defence force and will one day make a distinguished leader within it. Is it time for a female to head all of defence? Jacqui has the right qualities, so watch this space in twenty years’ time.

Year 12 Design and Technology Major Projects 2013

Congratulations to all the students on their outstanding major design projects this year. It has been at times a stressful journey for all the students and their teacher as they endeavour to solve the complex problems of today's society. Over the last three terms the students have been working on their 80 page design folio, while also producing their actual final working design, with some students completing a short video about their design. It has been a great privilege to work with such creative and dedicated students, and I wish them all the best in their upcoming HSC exams. What events are you competing in at the CHS athletic carnival?

100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, High Jump and Long Jump What is your favourite athletics event? 100m or Long jump What club do you run for?

I run for Hills District How long have you been competing in athletics? I have been competing in athletics since my first athletics carnival in primary school, but have only started competing and training seriously since last year. What training do you do for athletics? I train three times a week, ninety minutes each session. What other sports do you play? I have played Soccer for eleven years and Walla Tag for four years.

Cricket Club

With the 2013/14 cricket season just around the corner (competition starts 14th September) Castle Hill RSL Cricket club would like to remind parents that it’s still not too late to register their son or daughter to play cricket this season. This year Castle Hill RSL Cricket Club will be fielding 11 Junior sides in the HKHDCA competition

with several age groups fielding more than 1 team. The club currently still has some positions available in the following age groups - U/9's, U/10's, U/11's, U/13's, U/15's, Girls Saturday afternoon competition.
