Empowering Local Schools Many of you will know about the wonderful gains we have made through our participation in the 47 school trial, otherwise known as a trial to investigate devolution in staffing and finances for the selected schools. You will recall that this has allowed us the flexibility to implement the boys and girls mentoring program, appoint an Attendance Coordinator, employ a teacher for two days a week to manage our international students, employ teachers‟ aides to work with students in need of extra assistance, and so forth. This flexibility has most certainly benefited students, teachers and the community at Castle Hill High School. Now in a transition phase, the forty-seven schools trial is at an end, in reality. The government now wants to explore a widening of the program for over 200 schools. Entitled Empowering Local Schools National Partnerships, the new program expects to build on the benefits of the previous trial and further encourage devolution and greater flexibility and responsibility at a local level. As I have explained previously, I am a big fan of increased flexibility. We have a lot of creative ideas here at Castle Hill High School and we want to flexibly implement them for the benefits of students. I will be consulting with the executive over the next week to consider the merits, or otherwise, of moving into the next phase. At our P&C Meeting on March 21, I will speak to parents about my decision, which is due to region on March 9. I would have preferred to consult with parents before March 9, but unfortunately this has not been possible. The turnaround for schools to decide on this was a fortnight. However, I have been buoyed by the enormous support the community has given to our trial over two years, and believe that you will continue to support directions here. Vicki Brewer

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

International Women’s Day As always, International Women‟s Day will be celebrated around the world on Thursday March 8. And as always, Castle Hill High School students will join in celebrations. Ten of our senior girls will join prominent female leaders for breakfast in Parramatta and other senior girls in the mentoring classes will join with Ms Jo Bardakos to network, discuss issues and celebrate achievements over the decade. “Connecting Girls” is an important theme in 2012 and so it is relevant for our students, like girls and women around the world, to connect and unite in the importance of freedom, leadership and the education of girls.

Lenovo laptops for Year 9 Our parent and student meeting to discuss the distribution of and responsibility for new Year 9 laptops will take place on Tuesday March 13 at 6.30 pm in the school‟s auditorium. The new Lenovo laptops are truly state of the art. Very well designed and much more durable than previous models, they will impress. These laptops will stay with students until they leave in Year 12, then they will become the property of students. This is another wonderful opportunity for students, so parent attendance at the meeting on March 13 is essential.

Empowering Local Schools

Many of you will know about the wonderful gains we have made through our participation in the 47 school trial, otherwise known as a trial to investigate devolution in staffing and finances for the selected schools.

Languages Alive

The Languages Department is looking forward to yet another busy and productive year in 2012. Already the corridors are buzzing with “Konnichi wa” and “Bonjour” as our new Year 7 classes embark on their language learning and practise their new skills. We were very pleased with the 2011 HSC results. 100% of the French and Japanese Continuers classes achieved a Band 4-6. The French Continuers class achieved the best ever results. The mean of the Japanese Beginners‟ results was a staggering 10.27 above the state mean (a very creditable result for a non-selective comprehensive state high school.) We are very proud to be one of very few Languages Departments in the State and we are all passionate about the importance of language-learning and inter-cultural understanding. After a year of preparation and planning and a very time-consuming and comprehensive submission to the Department of Education, I am delighted to be accompanying our biennal French Study Tour which departs on 25 March. The 32 participating students are becoming very excited. Students will stay in home-stay and attend classes at our sister school CIV, near Nice in the south of France and then spend a week in Paris. Mr Gainey, and Ms Windrim will also be accompanying the excursion. The Japanese Study Tour will take place during the September /October school holidays, accompanied by Ms Baker and Mr O‟Reagan.

This month, from 19 March, we will be hosting a one week visit of 18 students from Hanasaki Tokuharu School in Japan. At this stage we still need a few more host families. As this is not a reciprocal exchange visit, a generous payment is offered to families who host. Eight French students from our French sister-school, CIV will be visiting us in May and June for six weeks, attending school and staying with host families. We have found 14 families to host but still require two more families to host respectively a girl or a boy for a period of 3 weeks. We are always grateful to the Castle Hill High School community who open their hearts and homes to visiting overseas students every year. Without this support we would be unable to run such a wide diversity of exchange programs for our own students. If you are interested in hosting, please contact me. WELCOME. High School is a whole new learning curve for parents and carers, let alone our children and the Castle Hill High School Parents & Citizens, is your support group! MONTHLY MEETINGS: are structured to give you lots of information about what is happening within the school and upcoming events through the Principal‟s Report. Issues that affect your child or his or her classes can be discussed within the informal atmosphere of the meeting or Ms Brewer is happy to chat with you after the meeting. The School Executive also seeks parents‟ opinions on its policies and new ventures. This is the forum where that discussion takes place. ACTIVITIES: We aim to support students and parents through the P&C run Canteen* and Uniform Shop, (where we are able to keep prices low but quality high); guest speakers to talk to parents about issues effecting teenagers today, (last year Maggie Hamilton‟s forum on What’s happening to our girls?); re-equipping/refurbishment projects within the school; the 24 hour parent support tent team at the RELAY FOR LIFE in May each year and we also hold a fun annual TRIVIA night! We‟ll keep you informed of our meeting dates and forthcoming activities through this page. *The P&C Canteen philosophy is to promote healthy eating patterns consistent with values taught in the school's PDHPE and Food Technology Nutrition syllabuses. (Profit is not the primary aim of our business). We’re introducing more wholesome fresh nutritional food and have reduced prices in our healthy food range by up to 40% on last year’s prices. The Great Aussie Bush Camp – Year 7

The Year Seven Orientation camp for 2012 has concluded, and from the mouths of both teachers and students, „It was a great success!‟

Mr Watson got a chance to play-out some dreams of defence force recruitment through fancy infiltration and torch-work in Commando night. Mr Conistis‟ and Mr Benton‟s groups learnt the specifics in keeping a bus engine cool during a breakdown. Ms Samuels‟ group understood Karma when after being splashed by Ms Samuels, she fell into a pool of mud herself. Courtney and Michelle both realised their childhood fear of the dark is still very alive. And the students got to laugh at previous years that had to endure tents instead of cabins. Below is a rendition of camp life by three Year Seven students. By Mr Peter Jephtha Year 7 Adviser The journey took about three hours but the coaches were very comfortable and we were able to watch a movie, listen to music, sleep or just watch the countryside go by. By the time we arrived everyone was bubbling with excitement, just wanting to get up after sitting for hours.

Firstly, my group did the Giant Swing. After being harnessed by our instructor we were whisked up by our classmates to the top of the swing (or as far as they wanted to go). The student 12 metres high, pull a ripcord that releases them, sending them into a huge swing. Next we had a go at the Dual Flying Fox. A thrilling ride 10 metres above lush trees and greenery. It was a heart pumping adrenaline rush that you could share with one of your friends. Some used this opportunity to race each other down to the bottom. It was exciting and definitely one of the best activities I experienced at camp.

Later that night Year 7 was split up into two groups: one group did Commando and the other had a games night. At the games night we played various games such as dodge ball and silent knots and crosses. It was entertaining and made us exhausted, ensuring a good night’s sleep.

The next day, after a delicious breakfast (where everybody was still half asleep), our group embarked on the Vertical Challenge. It tested our strength and was a great activity that involved a team of students that would relay one another. Some kids were extreme climbers that would get from the bottom to the top in only a few minutes. Others took a little longer but still did what they set out to do. Overall, everyone had a great time and a lot of people had begun to conquer their fears.

The following activity was canoeing. In three’s we filled the canoes and set out on the water. We all settled into the canoes by splashing each other, Miss Samuels, our instructor, Alex and Mr Jephtha. We then played a game that resulted in our instructor wearing his clothes backwards for the rest of the day and raced back to the dock, my canoe coming second. It was a sensational experience and it was fun to do our first water activity.

After lunch we had our second water activity, Raft Building. We were split into groups and had to make a raft that would at least stay afloat. After ten minutes of tying wood and floating rings together, we lined up our rafts and raced. Sadly, three out of the four rafts sank. Even though we had excellent swimmers that managed to get our raft back without it completely sinking, the activity was more about fun then making fantastic rafts. It was a brilliant activity that was hilarious to watch.

That night it was the other half Year 7 to have their turn at Commando. We all gathered around a blazing camp fire and got into groups for the game. Next we set out into the bush trying to find our chosen hostages. It was almost pitch black and it was terrifying walking through the bush trying not to get caught by the teachers.

The next day everyone woke up and had to pack their bags; sad because it was the last day of camp, but excited to go home and see their families. For the second last activity of the camp our group participated in an activity called Lost Island, better known as Mud World. We all got the muddiest possible as we crawled through it, jumped into it and swam in it. For the girls it was horror but for the guys it was an extreme mud fight. It was definitely one of the dirtiest activities but also one of the best activities. \

Our last activity was the big one, the Leap of Faith. The scariest activity for most of the group with the fear of heights but for others it was just another adrenaline rush. On the ground, seven and ten metres look high, but when you’re on the top of the pole it seems triple that! When you jump, it’s like flying through the air desperately trying to grab onto the bar. For many that did it, it was the final step to confront their fear and it was a perfect example of the way the camp let you do things that were out of your comfort zone. That was the last activity of the camp. It was amazing and it definitely made you go out of your comfort zone. I can say now that I have complete faith in the harnesses. The food was nice and the beds were much better than sleeping in tents. Overall it was a fantastic camp and some of the activities I could do thousands of times.

SPORTS COUNCIL

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT

STEVEN DUZEVICH

What does the sport of Volleyball involve? Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules.[1] It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since 1964.

The complete rules are extensive. But simply, play proceeds as follows: A player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. They may touch the ball as many as three times. Typically, the first two touches are used to set up for an attack, an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.

The rally continues, with each team allowed as many as three consecutive touches, until either: (1): A team makes a kill, grounding the ball on the opponent's court and winning the rally; or (2): A team commits a fault and loses the rally. The team that wins the rally is awarded a point, and serves the ball to start the next rally.

What level of representation have you achieved in Volleyball? I have been selected to represent the Sydney West School Region at the NSW CHS State Championships in 2011 and 2012. The 2012 CHS State Championships will be held in Taree from the 27 - 29 March. I have also have represented the NSW U/15 and U/17 teams at the National Championships. I will be trialling this year again for the NSW U/17 team.

What training do you do for Volleyball? I play in the Sydney Volleyball League representing the Sydney University team in the U/17 and Division One Men‟s competition. I train twice a week on Volleyball technique – skill practice and team play/formation. I also complete a fitness training session at least once a week.

What do you enjoy about Volleyball? I enjoy the challenges that Volleyball constantly provides for the individual player and the team. The level of competition and the team atmosphere when playing high level Volleyball enables me to strive for my best.

What other sports do you play? I still compete in Swimming. I enjoy competing in the Castle Hill High School Swimming carnivals every year. Thanks for the interview Sports Council

Chess News The Summer 2011/2012 Chess Tournament which began in October finally came to an end in Week 6 Term 1. The tournament started with nineteen players and after seventeen weeks of battle, in which the two girl competitors resigned due to prior commitments, five students emerged with top marks. Rafael Echevarria 14 points, Roland Huang 13.5 points, Allen Qi 14.5 points, Garry Wong 13 points and Kevin Santoso 13.5 points. Roland and Kevin then competed with each other to decide who was to end up in third and fourth position prior to the semi-finals.

In the semi – finals the first and fourth positioned players, Allen and Kevin, competed against each other, while the second and third placed competitors, Rafael and Roland were in battle to determine who would compete in the finals. This would result in the overall winner of the Chess Tournament.

In the end, Kevin was to play Roland in the final round to decide first and second place, while Allen fought Rafael (nicknamed Artie) to resolve the third position. After hard fought games in both finals Allen was to finish up in third place. Roland came second, while Kevin, who started the semi finals as the underdog, ended up in First place, becoming the 2011/2012 Summer Chess Champion of Castle Hill High School.

Chess is a sport played all year round. It is a game of champions and each player is a conqueror in their own right. The game of chess is for the sports person who has endurance, patience, tolerance, stamina and makes use of their skills, talent and ability.

The autumn winter tournament will start soon, do you have the qualities to accept such a challenge?. Chess is played in room A12 on Friday at lunch times. Mr D Singer Chess Coordinator.
