Tanabata is a Japanese star festival which celebrates the meeting of the

deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair).

According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are

allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar

month. In present-day Japan, people celebrate this day by writing wishes,

sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku (短冊), small pieces of paper,

and hanging them on bamboo a “wish tree.”

SOCIETY NEWS - RECENT EVENTS

May Luncheon: Tea Ceremony

What a treat we had when the DFW Urasenke

Tankōkai group demonstrated the Japanese Tea

Ceremony. They brought in tatami flooring (very

thick straw mats used as flooring in the traditional

Japanese home) and shoji screens to provide an

authentic tea ceremony experience. Many of us

then enjoyed partaking of the macha (tea) and

okashi (confectionary). The food for the luncheon

was potluck, which is always delicious because

members bring their favorite dished.

Dr. Matthew Perry

Dr. Perry, a direct descendent of Commodore

Perry, spoke to a large audience at the Benbrook

Library. Commodore Perry has been credited as

the single most important person to persuade the

Japanese in 1853 to open their ports to the

international community. What followed is history

from friend in WW I, adversary in WWII and now

the strongest of allies in the 21st century.

Editor’s Note: My apologies for the error on the

date in our last newsletter. Many of you showed

up on the wrong date, but still returned on the

correct date, June 6th.

Kimbell Art Museum: Matsuri! A Samurai

Celebration

Hundreds of people came to the Kimbell’s

celebration of the Japanese Samurai, even guests

from Fort Worth’s Sister City, Nagaoka, Japan –

Mssrs. Takano and Kawauchi. In addition to

performances by our Dondoko Taiko Drummers

and Sakura Dancers, we had over 30 volunteers

carry the Mikoshi Shrine along the grassy plaza

between the two buildings of the Kimbell Museum.

Sensei Makio Nishida, in his instructive, but always

humorous manner, trained everyone quickly on

how to properly carry the Mikoshi and chant

rhythmically and in unison. Over the course of the

celebration, from 1:00PM to 10:00PM, nearly

10,000 people came to the celebration.
