    The Fort city of Jaisalmer

The change of aroma of the air from day to evening , the change in

temperature of breeze flowing across the courtyards the color of stone wall

changing with the movement of sun. All defines the character of Jaisalmer as

so diverse but so unified and strong.

The city has grown with the time preserving its heritage and glory and to

    make its identity.

The giant Entrance and steep slope to ascend into the walled city comprises

of mohallas and gullies which is itself not bigger than the mohalla of any

urban city. The walled city is always overwhelmed with the flooding tourist

but never seems to be crowded by virtue of its streets and alleys with

overlooking chajjas and jharokhas projecting above the narrow street

shading it with harsh summer of desert. The delicate carving chiseled out onthe most unworkable sand stone provides a screen to let the air flow through

and privacy at the same time.

The tourist groups so evenly distributed in the streets of the city so that it

never appears to be crowded. The gullies and koochas leading to the open

space which resemble a chaupal and every corner and space is full of

activities of small mercantile, local music and dance with some one selling

junk jewelries , some one blowing flute and some one playing ektara on the

    tune of Padharo mharo desh.

With the time line of day the character of city changes it colors andactivities. The open spaces become bigger with the adjoining terrace

restaurant converted from old haveli. The night view of fortress wall look

even brighter with sodium vapor lights and the open space surrounded by

havelies create a contrast of light and shadow and give the city a diversified

    character.

The scenic beauty is incomparable, as no other settlement creates such space

which looks beautiful because of its dense houses.
