The forgotten logistics

For years, returned stock was generally viewed as a headache for both the seller and the buyer.

But innovative thinking, combined with a desire to find a profitable opportunity, has put a lot more focus recently on the area of reverse logistics.

What is logistics?Logistics is about moving materials from the raw material stage through production - the conversion process - and out to end users. Flowing in the opposite direction from end user to the supplier is the flow of customer demand information.

What is reverse logistics? However, there are occasions when it is necessary to move product in the opposite direction. There are three typical examples of where this might happen: - Product recalls; - Unwanted goods; - Recycled products.

How should the various activities be performed, i.e. repacking, disassembling, scrapping, etc.? What alternatives are available to recover products, component parts, and raw materials? Who should perform the various recovery activities: should this be part of normal operations or should a separate facility be created to manage the reverse flow of materials? Is it possible to integrate the activities that are typical for reverse logistics with existing production and distribution systems?Reverse logistics has to deal with five basic questions.

What are the costs and benefits of reverse logistics, both from an economical as well as an environmental point of view?

Finding satisfactory answers to these five questions and implementing them is vital, especially to companies who have extensive reverse logistics operations.
