August 2016 St. John’s Episcopal Church, Salem, NJ From the Deacon’s Bench By the time you read this, we will be knee deep in our annual Vacation Bible School. This event is one of the most significant outreach programs our Parish offers each year. We usually expect upwards of 40 children from the surrounding neighborhoods. This year we are partnering with the Food Bank of South Jersey for the dinner selection. This will give us the opportunity to also send each child home with breakfast for the next morning. We are excited to be able to do this. In addition to VBS, we are serving upwards of 70 bags each week from our Food Pantry. While much of this comes from our Outreach Budget, we only planned for 60-65 bags a week and as the need has grown, your generous contributions cover the costs of the additional food. We may also partner with the Food Bank for some of this food but we are only in the preliminary stages of discovering what they have to offer. There are many other projects that St John’s supports in outreach efforts. Perhaps now is a good time, in our so-called summer lull to remind you of some of them: 1. The Quilters – under the leadership of Gail Boyd, many quilts and an assortment of knit stuffed animals, are created each year and given to the Ronald McDonald House in Camden that services nearby Cooper Hospital. 2. Family Promise – St John’s has faithfully supported Family Promise financially and we are being asked to help with some volunteer work. 3. Meals on Wheels – St John’s has annually contributed to this worthwhile program. They are always looking for volunteers. 4. Salem Area Ministerium Scholarship – St John’s contributed a substantial donation to this local scholarship and this year the ministerium was able to give 18 $400 scholarships to deserving young men and women. 5. Needlework Guild of America – St John’s supports the fine work of this organization which provides new clothing to many people each year 6. Salem Middle School Backpack program – For the past 4 years, we have been providing 30-35 filled backpacks, targeted to 8 th graders but also appropriate for 7 th graders. This is funded entirely by your donations. We will very shortly begin this project for the upcoming school year 7. Trunk or Treat and Secret Santa Shop – last year we tried a couple of new ideas and they were very well received – Halloween fell on a Saturday and it was a beautiful day – we made a semicircle of cars and had approximately 100 children walk through with grateful parents. Halloween is on a Monday this year but hopefully will not dampen the enthusiasm to provide this opportunity for area children. Then in December we had a ‘Secret Santa Shop’ allowing the area children to ‘shop’ for mom or dad or grandmom or siblings – through your generous donations of money and items – we had a spectacular array of things. We all agreed to try this again this year with better advertising. 8. Operation Christmas Child/Shoebox – We provide the boxes, you fill them spectacularly and we turn over more than 30 boxes each year. 9. Our Merciful Savior Uniform Exchange – We have supported them every year as they provide uniforms for many children in this county, they have uniforms for Salem kids as well. This year we also helped two different people who were ‘burned out’ of their homes as well as essential auto repair work for another person. We were able to do that through donations and also a newly designated ‘contingency’ line item in our outreach budget. While we are in this interim period as we prepare to interview and call a new Rector – it is important that we continue to do those ‘things’ that define us. Certainly our outreach actions, including those of the music program at St. John’s, make us visible to the community and also fulfill our calling to be Christ’s other self to the world. From the Deacon’s Bench By the time you read this, we will be knee deep in our annual Vacation Bible School. This event is one of the most significant outreach programs our Parish offers each year. We usually expect upwards of 40 children from the surrounding neighborhoods. This year we are partnering with the Food Bank of South Jersey for the dinner selection. We may also partner with the Food Bank for some of this food but we are only in the preliminary stages of discovering what they have to offer. There are many other projects that St John’s supports in outreach efforts. Perhaps now is a good time, in our so-called summer lull to remind you of some of them:

1. The Quilters – under the leadership of Gail Boyd, many quilts and an assortment of knit stuffed animals, are created each year and given to the Ronald McDonald House in Camden that services nearby Cooper Hospital. 2.
