“Reaching out to spread God’s Word and share His blessings” February 2018 Edition
Lent is often called a “Journey.” We think
about the journey of Jesus’ life as He went
to the cross to suffer and die for our sins.
Life is most certainly a journey. We jour-
ney from highs and lows, good times and hardships. We journey along a
path of uncertainty and unknowns in this life – at least that is how it seems
when we go at it alone. But we are not called to live our life alone. Jesus’
promise “I am with you always to the end of the ages,” brings comfort and
purpose to the Christian.
When you go on a trip you leave some things behind, you only take what is
needed for the trip. “Here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that
is to come” (Hebrews 13:14). This Lenten Season we will focus our
thoughts on our journey to our heavenly home by exploring a short book in
the New Testament: 1 Peter. The epistle of 1 Peter only has 105 verses, but
it is rich with guidance and encouragement for living in a post-church and
increasingly secular society. Five times Peter tells the scattered congrega-
tions of Asia Minor that they are called by God and it’s those passages that
serve as the starting point for the midweek Lenten services. And as we jour-
ney toward heaven there are things we leave behind. We will focus on what
we should leave behind on our Sunday worship services.
As you can see both our Wednesday and Sunday services will challenge you
in your faith and your preparation.
Ash Wednesday begins on February 14 – a fitting day to think about the
love of Jesus for us. The Ash Wednesday worship service is always a som-
ber service as we focus on our sin and need for a Savior. On Wednesdays,
we begin with our Soup Supper at 5:30 p.m. and with worship at 6:30
p.m.

Mites Sunday
The Elders of Good Shepherd meet every month. The Elders are appointed to assist the
pastor in administration and to oversee the spiritual condition of the congregation. In
order to better fulfill that role, we have divided the congregation alphabetically into 4
groups. So each elder is now assigned to a group. First and foremost, they will be pray-
ing for you! If you have concerns, you can talk to your elder or pastor as you see fit.
The elders will be working along with pastor to identify needs and work towards greater
unity of the Body of Christ here at Good Shepherd.

Sunday Morning Video Bible Study Series
On Sunday mornings ,we
will be starting a new bible
study that is sure to chal-
lenge you to look at your life
in a new way. This will begin
on Sunday, February 4, at 9
a.m. You will not want to
miss this Bible study!
Life if often referred to as
“the game of life.” Using
popular games as a meta-
phor for our temporal lives,
this six-session small group
Bible study DVD, When the
Game is Over, It All Goes
Back in the Box, by John Ortberg,
neatly sorts out what’s fleeting and
what’s permanent in God’s king-
dom. It is based on his book by the
same name, but you don’t have to
buy the book or read the book
unless you want to.
Today is the day you choose…
which game you want to win…
which prize you want to collect…
which priorities you want to set. It’s
a thrill to win at checkers or Clue or
Trivial Pursuit. You sweep aside the
other players and you “own” the
board. It’s also a thrill to win a pro-
motion at work … the new house
you wanted … that sports car
you’ve always eyed.
But just like the game cards, the
tokens, and the timer, those prizes
are temporary. When the game is
over, they all go back in the box.
Games can cast a powerful spell,
says bestselling author John Ort-
berg. But the wisest player remem-
bers that the game is always going
to end. So, when everything goes
back in the box, you’ll have made
what is temporary a servant to what
is eternal, and you’ll leave this life
knowing you’ve achieved the only
victory that matters.
When the Game is Over, It All
Goes Back in the Box will teach
you to:
• Live passionately and boldly
• Learn how to be active players in
the game that pleases God
• Find your true mission and offer
your best
• Fill each square on the board with
what matters most
• Seek the richness of being instead
of the richness of having

The Trustees will be changing the bulb in the projector, changing the spots for the
speakers, and also are hoping to clean the sacristy. If there are any other projects
you think the Trustees need to do, please talk the chairperson of the Trustees, Ken
Passinault.
On Thursday, January 25, the
Women began a new Bible
study called “Let It Go: How
to Stop Running the Show and
Start Walking in Faith.” This
is a six-week Bible study. Les-
lie Johnson is leading this at
her house.
This humorous, yet spiritu-
ally practical six-week DVD
study will help you learn how
to control what you should,
trust God with what you can’t,
and more importantly, decide
which one is which! Join
Karen Ehman, a recovering
control freak, for these helpful
sessions:
1. God Called and He’d Like
His Job Back.
2. Combating the “Me First!”
Mentality.
3. Pursuing the Appearance
of Perfection.
4. Practicing the Art of Soul
Control.
5. When Comparisons Lead
to Over-Control
6. Fixing Your Eyes on the
Attitude Indicator.
This will begin at 6 p.m.
every Thursday night. Talk to
Leslie if you would like to join
in late and she can give you the
materials to catch up. All
women are welcome to join.

“I am not commanding you, but I want
to test the sincerity of your love by com-
paring it with the earnestness of oth-
ers. For you know the grace of our Lord
Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet
for your sakes he became poor, so that you
through his poverty might become rich” (2
Corinthians 8:8-9).
Without commands or even arm-twisting, St.
Paul encourages, even challenges, the
Church in Corinth to demonstrate the sincer-
ity of their faith by their generosity in giv-
ing. He does this because giving generously
is a gift of the Spirit given to us through the
Gospel.
St. Paul wrote: “But just as you excel in eve-
rything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,
in complete earnestness and in your love for
us—see that you also excel in this grace of
giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7). In other words,
just as we grow in faith and speech and
knowledge of eternal things by the Holy
Spirit through the Word of God, so also do
we grow in giving from the same Spirit
through the same Word.
The problem is that the grace of generosity
often grows cold in us. It’s not so much that
we stop giving, but we don’t put it first. We
treat it like all the other bills that must be
paid. It becomes a chore, just one more thing
to check off a list of things to do. That emp-
ties it of its spiritual power and robs us of
the joy that Christ and the Scriptures assign
to it.
On top of that, since this generosity is linked
to faith and knowledge of divine things, a
lack of excelling in giving is a sure sign that
our faith and knowledge of God are under
attack as well.
Thus St. Paul points to the foundation of
generosity: the generosity of Christ Himself.
Even though He was rich, He became poor
so that we who are poor might become rich.
Thus, the incarnation, suffering, and death of
our Lord on the cross is the reason, source,
and driving force for our generosity in giv-
ing to the church.
And since Christ who was rich became poor
so that we might be rich in His grace—of
which generous giving is part—so we also
who are rich in His grace can excel in press-
ing His grace into service toward the gra-
cious work of the church.
Pay attention to what you give to the church
so that you may excel at it. And if you find
that your heart has grown cold or indifferent
toward it, immerse yourself in God’s Word.
Read it at home. Attend Bible Class. Hear
and listen to it preached in the Divine Ser-
vice.
Be reminded of what Christ has done for
you in His incarnation, suffering, and death.
For this will strengthen your faith and
knowledge. And where that excels, so will
the grace of giving excel also.
