THE FLOCK FOR ALL THE SAINTS

The first Sunday in November is All Saints Sunday. This is a very special day in the life of the church as we inten onally remember the faithful who died in the last year, recognizing that all of life is a bap smal journey, including our death.

The Fes val of All Saints has been a celebra on of the church since about the Third Century. The official date is November 1, though we gather to celebrate it in our busy me as the first Sunday in November (it seems we only have room for God on Sundays in our modern calendars!).

All Saints Day is a day when we celebrate the gracious work of Jesus Christ who turns sinners to saints through his death on the cross and gi of the Holy Spirit.

November 2 was tradi onally celebrated as All Souls Day, when the faithful departed were celebrated. We have come to conflate these days as one in our modern observance. In the Bri sh Isles, the fes val of All Saints was called All Hallows (as in hallowed, or holy). That is why the evening before is Hallowe(v)en(ing). The darker themes of the evening were ways of remembering what we had been before Christ. The dawn brought the transforma on to the light and grace of the gospel.

History lessons aside, the celebra on of All Saints reminds us of some crucial elements of our faith. As I was wri ng this, a friend called and asked what I was doing. When I said I was wri ng about “all saints” he said he hoped he was on the list. I reminded him that was what the “all” meant – even if I disagreed (ha, ha)!

We believe that the communion of saints is determined by the work of Jesus Christ. It includes all the bap zed who stay in fellowship with the church. That includes your spouse on the days you fight, the person across the aisle you can’t stand, the parishioner who seems to be a pain, and the pastors whom you are sure are wrong about everything. Second, this unity in Christ transcends even death. As Christ holds onto the saints who are living, so, too, does Christ have hold of those who have died. He alone is the unbreakable bond that holds the living and dead together. Our memories of those

we mourn may fade, but Christ’s strong grip will unite us with them un l that final day of resurrec on comes. In a society that seeks to avoid death, it is natural that we should forget the dead. Not so in Christ, especially on All Saints.

Finally, All Saints includes those who shall be held in Christ. As the church moves into God’s ever‐approaching future, we encounter

waves of new saints. We have a responsibility, as stewards of the gospel, of the good earth, of the church, to pass on what we have received. We are called to leave things be er than we found them!

All Saints is a day of reflec on on the faith—past, present, and future—and the Christ who is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow.

Happy All Saints. I give special and deep thanks for all you beau ful saints at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. God bless us always.

Old recipes are precious things. They giveinstructions about how to prepare a dish, butthey are so much more. They are illed withmemories. They connect families as they arepassed from one generation to the next. Theybringeventsandpeoplefromlongagorightintothepresent.

Our youth group has had a busy month planning our upcoming fundraising events to help us

get to the ELCA youth gathering in Houston next summer. We have some great events com-

ing up over the next few months.

We will be selling breakfast sandwiches in between services every week, so come hungry

mornings! A hot, tasty breakfast sandwich will be perfect heading into the winter months.

We also have a fundraiser aimed at helping members of our congregation, which is kicking off

in November. Our teens are volunteering their services for auction, so members can bid on

these services via silent auction the first two Sundays in November. See the silent auction

sheets in the narthex for details. Need help raking leaves? Babysitting? Cleaning out your

garage? Our youth can help!
