the flip side of thanksgiving

Transcript November 25 and 26, 2017 The Flip Side of Thanksgiving Greg Nettle | 2 Corinthians 9:11 So Traders it’s so good to be with you. I’m so grateful for your church. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. My Thanksgiving was kind of overwhelming this year. It was so good— so many things to be thankful for. But if I’m being completely honest with you, there are times when there are things in my life and it’s hard to be thankful, right? It’s just hard to give thanks for everything. Think about it. Any Colts fans in the house? I know. It’s a little bit hard this year, right? But I want you to know that it could be worse. You know where I’m from, right? Yeah, Cleveland. That’s where I live so you all can be grateful that you don’t. And uh, that’s awful. It’s a great city. But you know how I tell that joke when I’m in Cleveland? Yeah, I can’t. We’re always bad. Some of you, it’s hard to be thankful for your spouse, right? Some of you, on Thanksgiving, it was tough. You wanted to be thankful for everything but sometimes it’s tough with your spouse. But I want to remind you, it could be worse. So tomorrow morning here’s what I want you to do. This is your prescription. When both of you wake up, kind of roll toward each other in bed, look at each other deeply in the eyes and just say, “It could be worse.” Don’t do that because it might get worse then. That would not be good. Thanksgiving is an important holiday. There was a proclamation made in 1789 that says: “…the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts,” thankful hearts, “the many signal favors of Almighty God…” I love that our country proclaimed that but ultimately giving thanks doesn’t come from a proclamation. It comes from a grateful heart and as we look to God in Ephesians, chapter 5, verse 20 we read these words, which are more important: “And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Give thanks for everything because thanksgiving matters. In Luke, chapter 17 there is this incredible story about 10 lepers who were healed by Jesus. And just to remind you, leprosy was this horrible disease—very horrible in the days of Jesus because when someone had leprosy they were literally cast out of the community. They had no contact with their family any more. They had no contact with friends. No physical contact whatsoever because it was so easily spread. So here are these 10 lepers and Jesus comes into contact with them and Jesus says: Go on your way and you will be healed. So these 10 lepers take off and as they go they are healed and how many people know how many lepers returned to Jesus to thank him? How many lepers? One
