Directions: After a series of lessons teaching students
about “just right”, easy, and challenging books, have students
reflect on each type of book by having them explain and illustrate what those
words mean. This is a great way to assess how they look at each of those
words. It could be a simple activity you revisit throughout the year.

The Five Finger Rule Step 1: Choose a book you want to read. Step 2: Open the book to the
middle. Step 3: Read the entire
page. Step 4: For every word that you don’t know or
have trouble sounding out, put up a finger as you read.
