August 5th Program

Bill Bruton

Civil War Sesquicentennial William F. Bruton Jr. (Bill) was named Marietta's city manager in January 2000. He previously served as city manager of Hartsville, S.C., and Colonial Beach, Va. Bruton graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law and holds a bachelor's degree in public administration and political science from Duke University, where he was president of the student body. Bruton has won many professional and community awards, including the South Carolina Public Official Leadership Award in 1993 and 2000. In 2010, Bruton was selected by the Carl Vinson Institute to travel to China where he taught city management principles at the Beijing Administration College to city officials from the various departments of the Beijing city government.

Under Bruton's leadership, communities have been honored with the All-America City award, the nation's most prestigious civic honor. Marietta earned the award in 2006 and was the first Georgia city in 30 years to win. Hartsville won the award in 1996. During his tenure, cities Bruton has managed have been honored:

• All-America City, National Civic League

• City of Excellence, Georgia Municipal Association

• Trendsetter, Georgia Municipal Association and Georgia Trend magazine

• Certified City of Ethics, Georgia Municipal Association

• Best Redevelopment Plan, International Downtown Association and American Planning Association

Bruton is a member of several professional organizations, including the International City/County Management Association, and has presented at conferences across the United States. Bruton is a member of the Marietta Kiwanis Club and various civic boards. He and his wife, Lauri, have two children.

President Jim Boone presided over the meeting.

Barbara Woodhouse and Charles Lassiter greeted members and guests.

Beth Kornegay-Tyler conducted the invocation and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Daniel Owen introduced guests and visiting Rotarians while conducting the GRSP raffle.

Past President Bill Callaway selected the winning raffle ticket.

Barbara Woodhouse won a gift card in the GRSP raffle.

Past President Pat McBride gave sunshine for his daughters who performed at the Grand Ole Opry.

Past President Sam Ainsworth announced that the club donated $210 per capita to the Rotary Foundation in 2012-13 and District 6900 donated 1.3 million dollars.

President Jim Boone gave sunshine in honor of Paul Payne’s 80th birthday.

Past President Kay Anderson announced that volunteers were needed for the Center for Children and Young Adults dinner taking place on the evening of August 2nd.

Daniel Stout announced that the notice for dues was sent out via email recently.

Bev Collins declared that the Women of Rotary party was a great success.

Kim Gresh announced that President Jim Boone sent flowers to the Women of Rotary group.

Past President Sally Platt promised that the Women of Rotary group didn’t talk about the men in the club because they weren’t bored in the least.

Norm Finley announced that the club would be having a strategic planning meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday August 3rd at United Community Bank.

Past President Rene Lanier announced the pending arrival of the club’s GRSP student.
