EFFECTS OF NEW TCHNOLOGYTO FISHERYRY SOCIETY

As an island the country has more potential in exploitingoffshore fishing.

Although an offshore fishery has potential for furthergrowth, its development is constrained by risks ofinvestment due to uncertainty of finding fishing grounds.

In order to exploit the offshore fishery resources moreeffectively, fishers need to use state-of-the-arttechnology such as fishery forecasting systems andknowledge on the resources in addition to handling of the

    modern marine equipment.

This helps fishermen to tackle the highly migratory offshorefishery resources not only minimizing the search time forfish which significantly affect the economics

    IN THE PAST

The fisheries sector was considered as one that had goodpotential for providing employment to rural youth as well asfor providing animal protein to the population.

Traditionally Sri Lankan fishers employed a wide range of craft. The indigenous crafts of Sri Lanka are the planked beach

seine craft or paru, the outrigger cnoe or oruwa, and the lograft or vallam. Of all traditional crafts, the outrigger canoe isthe most popular among fishers in the south of sri lanka

    IN THE PRESENT

New fishing crafts introduced to small scale fisheries in the south of srilanka consist of 5.2-7m fiberglass boats with outboard engines,3.5ton crafts with inboard engines, and mechanized traditionalcraft.

Half the fishing fleet of sri lanka consist of mechanized crafts.Although adopting mechanized fishing activities could increase thefishers average annual catches, and reduce some of the traditionalrisk of catch fluctuations, the newly introduced mechanized crafts

    are highly capital-intensive.

Government should remove taxes andsurcharges on dry and canned fish in

sri lanka. A main problem that Sri Lanka has to

face at the moment is the lack of craft

as deep sea trawlers and sophisticatedequipment such as fish finders and fishdetectors.

We should stop Illegal fishing The education of fishermen society

    should be develop
